The miscibility and the effect of compositional distribution on physical properties were investigated for binary blends of biosynthesized poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] and comonomer compositionally fractionated poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate)s [P(3HB‐co‐3HH)] with narrow compositional distribution. Biosynthesized P(3HB‐co‐3HH) samples were compositionally fractionated using solvent (chloroform)/nonsolvent (n‐heptane) mixtures. The binary blends of fractionated P(3HB‐co‐3HH)s with different 3HH unit content were prepared by casting from solution in chloroform. The miscibility and the thermal properties of these blends were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the two components are miscible in the amorphous phase when the difference in 3HH unit content between the two component polymers of these blends is less than 20 mol‐%, subsequently they are immiscible when the difference is larger than 30 mol‐%. By comparing the thermal properties of the binary blends of fractions, with those for the fractions themselves, and with those for the bacterially as‐produced unfractionated copolyesters, the effects of compositional distribution on the properties of copolyesters were discussed.

Novel poly[(fluorene)‐co‐(2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide‐3,7‐diyl)]s were synthesized. The octyl group on the 2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide (DOSO) unit improved the solubility of the polymers and broadened the optical band gap from 2.95 to 3.20 eV as the content of DOSO unit increases. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra of polymers show CIE coordinates around (0.16, 0.07) independent of the ratio of DOSO units in the polymers, owing to the ICT and steric hindrance dual‐function. A high efficiency of 3.1 cd · A−1 (EQE = 3.9%) was obtained with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ba/Al. The results indicate that PF‐3,7DOSOs could be a promising candidate for saturated blue‐emitting polymers with spectral stability and high efficiency.

The oxidative addition of benzyl chloride to Ni(cod)2 in the presence of 1,4‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)acenaphthenediimine followed by chloride abstraction affords [(η3‐CH2C6H5)Ni(α‐diimine)][PF6] (α‐diimine = 1,4‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)acenaphthenediimine) in 70% yield. The complex is active in ethylene polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane and under mild reaction conditions. The polyethylenes obtained are highly branched, have very low densities, do not show Tm or measurable crystallinity and have molecular weights ranging from 80 × 103 to 290 × 103 g · mol−1.

Two novel monovinyl β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) monomers are synthesized. Their chemical compositions are characterized by means of element analysis, NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The results show that the synthesis techniques used are convenient and efficient. Using N‐isopropylacrylamide as a comonomer, two novel linear copolymers can also be synthesized.

Summary: Novel crosslinked porous particles based on the ionic copolymer of 1,1,3,3‐tetramethylguanidine acrylate (TMGA) and N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) were prepared via an inverse suspension polymerization using cyclohexane as continuous phase and Span 60 as the dispersant. The SO2 absorption–desorption properties of the P(TMGA‐co‐MBA) particles were studied for the first time. The particles showed excellent SO2 absorption properties: high capacity and rate. These absorption properties, as well as the particle volume, shape, and morphology, remained unchanged during the SO2 absorption–desorption cycles. The material appeared to be a good candidate as SO2 absorbent for fuel gas desulfurization (FGD) and purification of other SO2‐containing gases.

Summary: PE‐block‐PS and P(E‐co‐P)‐block‐PS block copolymers were synthesised via sequential monomer addition during homogeneous polymerisation on various phenoxyimine catalysts. One phenoxyimine catalyst was tailored to produce high molecular weight block copolymers containing both, polyolefin and polystyrene segments. According to chromatographic analysis and TEM morphology studies, blends of block copolymers and PE homopolymers [or P(E‐co‐P), respectively] were formed. The direct olefin/styrene block copolymer synthesis on phenoxyimine catalysts represents an attractive, new one‐pot route to styrenic block copolymers which are commercially prepared by anionic styrene/diene block copolymerisation followed by hydrogenation.

Summary: A new crystal morphology (δ form) of poly(3‐hydroxypropionate) (PHP) is found in cast and melt‐crystallized PHPs with low molecular weight, in which the PHP chains possibly adopt a 21 helix rather than the trans conformation found in the β or γ form. The fusion temperature‐ and the crystallization temperature‐dependent polymorphism are responsible for the dual morphologies and the unique growth kinetics of spherulites in the melt‐crystallized PHPs.

π‐Conjugated microporous networks have been prepared from the tetraarylated diketopyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole unit as a tetrafunctional building block. The reactions are carried out using microwave‐assisted Yamamoto or Sonogashira cross‐coupling. Red insoluble powders are obtained, showing intense fluorescence. The polymer networks exhibit a high gas storage capability, with BET surface areas up to about 500 m2 · g−1.

Summary: Self‐oscillating polymers and nano‐gel particles consisting of N‐isopropylacrylamide and the ruthenium catalyst of the Belousov‐Zhabotinsky reaction have been prepared. In order to clarify the crosslinking effect on the self‐oscillating behavior, the phase transition behaviors were investigated by measuring the transmittance and the fluorescence intensity of the polymer solution and the gel bead suspension. Cooperative effects due to crosslinking will play an important role for the design of nanoactuators.

A series of novel biodegradable random copolymers of 5‐benzyloxy‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (5‐benzyloxy‐trimethylene carbonate, BTMC) and glycolide were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The incorporation of BTMC units into the copolymer chains results in good solubility of the polymers in common solvents. The in vitro degradation rate can be tailored by adjusting the composition of the copolymers.

Summary: Microwave‐assisted ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid using zinc oxide as a catalyst is investigated. By adding 30 wt.‐% ionic liquid, poly(ε‐caprolactone) with a weight‐average molar mass of 28 500 g · mol−1 is obtained at 85 W for 30 min. The results indicate that the polymerization could be efficiently enhanced in the presence of ionic liquids under microwave irradiation because ionic liquids can effectively absorb microwave energy.

Summary: A bacterial poly[(3‐hydroxybutyrate)‐co‐(3‐hydroxyvalerate)] biosynthesized by Pseudomonas sp. HJ‐2 was found to be a shape memory polymer. Permanent shapes were set by annealing at room temperature the samples that had been pre‐treated above 95 °C in specified shapes. The temporary shapes were set by stretching and holding the elongated samples. Thermal shrinkage began at 45 °C and stopped at 75 °C to recover to their permanent shapes. Apparently, the orientation induced the formation of hard segments that were responsible for setting the temporary shapes. The shape memory effect of this polymer was explained based on the DSC and XRD results at different phases.

1‐Vinyl‐2‐(hydroxymethyl)imidazole ( 2 ) is synthesized by a procedure described in the literature. Corresponding copolymers with upper critical solution temperature (UCST)‐type transitions in water and high‐glass transition temperatures (Tg) are prepared by free radical copolymerization with N‐vinylimidazole ( 1 ). Depending on the copolymer composition, the cloud point can be varied between 19 and 41 °C. As the copolymer composition is identical with the monomer feed ratio, the cloud point can be easily tuned in the desired range. Furthermore, a distinctive pH‐dependence and salt effect can be observed.

The cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has recently attracted considerable interest because of the issue of biosphere‐nanomaterial interactions. The biocompatibility of CNTs is determined by the metal impurities in the CNTs, the size of the CNTs and the CNT dispersion states; in particular, the type of surface modifications on the CNTs affects how they interact with cells and determines their cytotoxicity and cellular uptake. In this study, biocompatible single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) wrapped with a water‐soluble copolymer, poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid] (PDM), were prepared. We report that these SWNTs have enhanced water dispersibility and cellular internalization but no significant cytotoxic activity against mouse embryonic fibroblast NIH‐3T3 cells.

In the present paper, the microwave (MW)‐assisted synthesis of the alkaline N‐[3‐(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide ( 4 ) and ‐acrylamide ( 5 ) monomers within minutes is described. The reaction was carried out by mixing and subsequent irradiation of 3‐dimethylamino‐1‐propylamine ( 3 ) and (meth)acrylic acid ( 1 / 2 ) without addition of solvent. After polymerization, the obtained homopolymers ( 6 / 7 ) exhibit lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in water at 35 °C only at pH = 14. The LCST‐behavior can be influenced by N‐oxidation of the tertiary amino group with hydrogen peroxide or by formation of a polymer‐inclusion complex ( 6a ) of 6 and β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) by addition of randomly‐methylated β‐CD.

The present article reports on a strategy for the functionalization of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by grafting with various polymer chains. Copolymers consisting of α‐methylstyrene (AMS) and a second monomer, that is glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) or styrene (St), were synthesized in advance. The copolymers were heated in the presence of MWCNTs in solution, decomposition of the AMS sequences occurred, providing macroradicals, which further attacked the double bonds on the MWCNT surfaces. Grafting of the copolymer chains onto the surface of the MWCNTs was thus achieved, as demonstrated by FT‐IR, XPS and Raman technologies. The resulting poly(AMS‐co‐GMA)‐g‐MWCNTs could be uniformly dispersed in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) and acetone, and the poly(AMS‐co‐St)‐g‐MWCNTs also could be uniformly dispersed in DMF.

The synthesis of poly(β‐alanine) by Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized as novozyme 435 catalyzed ring‐opening of 2‐azetidinone is reported. After removal of cyclic side products and low molecular weight species pure linear poly(β‐alanine) is obtained. The formation of the polymer is confirmed with 1H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. The average degree of polymerization of the obtained polymer is limited to = 8 by its solubility in the reaction medium. Control experiments with β‐alanine as a substrate confirmed that the ring structure of the 2‐azetidinone is necessary to obtain the polymer.

Summary: An initiator for nitroxide mediated ‘living’ free radical polymerization was prepared with a fluorescent tag attached to the initiating alkyl radical terminus. This was used to synthesize amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐polystyrene diblock copolymers, which self assembled in a tetrahydrofuran/buffer solution to form structures that are visible by fluorescence.
