If is the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, and is the cohomology ring of over a field of characteristic , then the ranks, , of the lower central series quotients of can be computed from the Betti numbers, , of the linear strand in a minimal free resolution of over . We use the Cartan-Eilenberg change of rings spectral sequence to relate these numbers to the graded Betti numbers, , of a minimal resolution of over the exterior algebra .

From this analysis, we recover a formula of Falk for , and obtain a new formula for . The exact sequence of low-degree terms in the spectral sequence allows us to answer a question of Falk on graphic arrangements, and also shows that for these arrangements, the algebra is Koszul if and only if the arrangement is supersolvable.

We also give combinatorial lower bounds on the Betti numbers, , of the linear strand of the free resolution of over ; if the lower bound is attained for , then it is attained for all . For such arrangements, we compute the entire linear strand of the resolution, and we prove that all components of the first resonance variety of are local. For graphic arrangements (which do not attain the lower bound, unless they have no braid subarrangements), we show that is determined by the number of triangles and subgraphs in the graph.

We study the question of local solvability for second-order, left-invariant differential operators on the Heisenberg group , of the form


where is a complex matrix. Such operators never satisfy a cone condition in the sense of Sjöstrand and Hörmander. We may assume that cannot be viewed as a differential operator on a lower-dimensional Heisenberg group. Under the mild condition that and their commutator are linearly independent, we show that is not locally solvable, even in the presence of lower-order terms, provided that . In the case we show that there are some operators of the form described above that are locally solvable. This result extends to the Heisenberg group a phenomenon first observed by Karadzhov and Müller in the case of It is interesting to notice that the analysis of the exceptional operators for the case turns out to be more elementary than in the case When the analysis of these operators seems to become quite complex, from a technical point of view, and it remains open at this time.

We consider an initial-boundary value problem for a nonlinear wave equation in one space dimension. The nonlinearity features the damping term and a source term of the form , with 1$">. We show that whenever , then local weak solutions are global. On the other hand, we prove that whenever m$"> and the initial energy is negative, then local weak solutions cannot be global, regardless of the size of the initial data.

Furthermore, we prove an asymptotic formula for the -th approximation number of the identity map , where denotes the linear span of the first standard unit vectors in , and apply it to Lorentz and Orlicz sequence spaces.

In this paper we characterize those functions of the real line to itself such that the nonlinear superposition operator defined by maps the Hölder-Zygmund space to itself, is continuous, and is times continuously differentiable. The following typical problem occurs in passing to the limit in some phase field models: for two sequences of space-time dependent functions (representing, e.g., suitable approximations of the temperature and the phase variable) we know that the sum converges in some -space as and that the time integrals of a suitable ``space' functional evaluated on are uniformly bounded with respect to . Can we deduce that and converge separately? LUCKHAUS (1990) gave a positive answer to this question in the framework of the two-phase Stefan problem with Gibbs-Thompson law for the melting temperature. PLOTNIKOV (1993) proposed an abstract result employing the original idea of Luckhaus and arguments of compactness and reflexivity type. We present a general setting for this and other related problems, providing necessary and sufficient conditions for their solvability: these conditions rely on general topological and coercivity properties of the functionals and the norms involved, and do not require reflexivity.

In this paper we establish a tractable and explicit criterion for the hyponormality of arbitrary trigonometric Toeplitz operators, i.e., Toeplitz operators with trigonometric polynomial symbols . Our criterion involves the zeros of an analytic polynomial induced by the Fourier coefficients of . Moreover the rank of the selfcommutator of is computed from the number of zeros of in the open unit disk and in counting multiplicity.

Let be a semisimple simply connected algebraic group defined and split over the field with elements, let be the finite Chevalley group consisting of the -rational points of where , and let be the th Frobenius kernel. The purpose of this paper is to relate extensions between modules in and with extensions between modules in . Among the results obtained are the following: for 2$"> and , the -extensions between two simple -modules are isomorphic to the -extensions between two simple -restricted -modules with suitably ``twisted" highest weights. For , we provide a complete characterization of where and is -restricted. Furthermore, for , necessary and sufficient bounds on the size of the highest weight of a -module are given to insure that the restriction map is an isomorphism. Finally, it is shown that the extensions between two simple -restricted -modules coincide in all three categories provided the highest weights are ``close" together.

The above-mentioned results hold also for sets. In addition, every -set has measure , and a countable union of closed -sets is a -set.

In this paper we shall determine all actions of groups of prime order with on Gorenstein del Pezzo (singular) surfaces of Picard number 1. We show that every order- element in ( , being the minimal resolution of ) is lifted from a projective transformation of . We also determine when is finite in terms of , and the number of singular members in . In particular, we show that either for some , or for every prime , there is at least one element of order in (hence is infinite).

This paper is a sequel to a paper by the second author on regular linear systems (1994), referred to here as ``Part I'. We introduce the system operator of a well-posed linear system, which for a finite-dimensional system described by , would be the -dependent matrix . In the general case, is an unbounded operator, and we show that it can be split into four blocks, as in the finite-dimensional case, but the splitting is not unique (the upper row consists of the uniquely determined blocks and , as in the finite-dimensional case, but the lower row is more problematic). For weakly regular systems (which are introduced and studied here), there exists a special splitting of where the right lower block is the feedthrough operator of the system. Using , we give representation theorems which generalize those from Part I to well-posed linear systems and also to the situation when the ``initial time' is . We also introduce the Lax-Phillips semigroup induced by a well-posed linear system, which is in fact an alternative representation of a system, used in scattering theory. Our concept of a Lax-Phillips semigroup differs in several respects from the classical one, for example, by allowing an index which determines an exponential weight in the input and output spaces. This index allows us to characterize the spectrum of and also the points where is not invertible, in terms of the spectrum of the generator of (for various values of ). The system is dissipative if and only if (with index zero) is a contraction semigroup.

An infinite dimensional notion of asymptotic structure is considered. This notion is developed in terms of trees and branches on Banach spaces. Every countably infinite countably branching tree of a certain type on a space is presumed to have a branch with some property. It is shown that then can be embedded into a space with an FDD so that all normalized sequences in which are almost a skipped blocking of have that property. As an application of our work we prove that if is a separable reflexive Banach space and for some and every weakly null tree on the sphere of has a branch -equivalent to the unit vector basis of , then for all 0$">, there exists a subspace of having finite codimension which embeds into the sum of finite dimensional spaces.
