Dielectric and DSC methods were used to study a new fluorinated liquid crystalline compound exhibiting ferroelectric and paraelectric phases as well as an intermediate alpha sub-phase. Two dielectric relaxation processes were revealed in the SmC* phase: a typical Goldstone mode over the whole temperature range and a soft mode in the pre-transition region on both sides of the SmC*–SmA* transition. From the temperature dependencies of the dielectric increments and critical frequencies for the dielectric relaxation processes observed in all the liquid crystalline phases, as well as from texture observations, it was shown that there is a SmC*α sub-phase between the ferroelectric SmC* and paraelectric SmA* phases.  相似文献

Anomalous dielectric relaxation behaviour is observed in the ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymer (viz. ferroelectric copolysiloxane (R)-COPS 11-10) around the ferroelectric SmC* to paraelectric SmA phase transition. Measurements have been performed on sample of thickness ~10 mum in indium-tin-oxide coated cell in the frequency range 10 Hz to 13 MHz. With increase of temperature, a gradual shift of the soft mode frequency towards the higher frequency side was observed, while a decrease in the relaxation strength was seen with the corresponding increase in temperature. The shifts of the soft modes in the SmC* and SmA phase are considered to be due to change in the viscosity of the polymer, as an increase in viscosity increases fluctuations of the coupling between the dipoles in the network even far from the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition. Application of a bias field causes a shift of the critical frequency towards the higher frequency side, while the dielectric strength ( Δε) decreases under the bias field. The Cole-Cole fitting parameters obtained from the best fit of the dielectric constant data are found to be consistent with other similar materials. Another relaxation mode (molecular mode) was also observed which comes into play in both the smectic phases (SmC* and SmA) and contributes to the dielectric permittivity.  相似文献

Four new synthesised liquid crystalline compounds belonging to the homologous series of fluorinated biphenyl benzoate esters have been studied to compare their dielectric and electrooptic properties. Three of the studied compounds exhibited ferro- and antiferroelectric phases while one of them exhibited only one liquid crystalline phase – ferroelectric SmC*. No paraelectric phase was detected and straight transition between isotropic liquid and ferroelectric phases was observed for all studied compounds. Tilt angle for all of the studied compounds was equal to ca. 45? in the liquid crystalline phases, except temperature range close to the isotropic liquid–ferroelectric smectic phase transition. Temperature dependences of helical pitch, spontaneous polarisation and switching time have been determined. Based on XRD results, temperature dependence of the layer thickness has also been found. Only one relaxation process has been revealed in the ferroelectric as well as antiferroelectric phases, even the bias field up to 8 V/µm was applied. The dielectric and electrooptic data are discussed based on the mean-field theory predictions.  相似文献

Complex dielectric spectroscopy (frequency range 5 Hz–13 MHz) has been used to analyse the frequency, temperature and bias‐field dependences of the molecular dynamics of a very high‐spontaneous‐polarization ferroelectric liquid crystalline material exhibiting SmA, SmC* and unknown SmX smectic phases. Different smectic phase transition temperatures have been observed from the study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric strength and the relaxation frequency. The phase transition temperatures (crystalline to isotropic phases) have also been described very accurately from the temperature‐dependent symmetric and asymmetric shape parameters of the relaxation function and also the dc conductivity. In a planar aligned cell, two symmetric modes (Goldstone mode and domain mode) have been observed in both the SmX and SmC* phases. One asymmetric mode (X‐mode) observed in the SmC* and SmA phases could be related to the interaction of dipoles of the ferroelectric liquid crystals being affected by the surface of the cell. The soft mode, which usually appears very close to the SmC*–SmA phase transition was not observed until the bias field was applied. The second order nature of the SmC*–SmA phase transition was revealed.  相似文献

The dielectric properties in the vicinity of the isotropic-smectic-C* phase transition in ferroelectric liquid crystals are discussed. The temperature and frequency dependence of the complex dielectric permittivity in both the phases of the transition are calculated. The theoretical phase diagram of the dielectric permittivity is studied.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The influence of ferroelectric BaTiO3 nanoparticles on the dielectric constant in the isotropic phase of the isotropic-nematic phase transition is studied within Landau phenomenological theory. The ferroelectric BaTiO3 nanoparticles dependence of transition temperature and dielectric constant in the isotropic phase is calculated. We compare our theoretical results with experimental data available in the literature.  相似文献

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (102-105Hz) is used to study the opto-dielectric effect in statistical polysiloxane copolymers with side groups containing chiral mesogenic units and others containing azobenzene moieties. Below 64 C, the unexposed copolymer is ferroelectric. UV-exposure induces a photoisomerization of the azobenzene to the cis -configuration, and the phase transition, ferroelectric/non-ferroelectric (SC*/SA), is shifted to lower temperatures. In the temperature interval between the phase transition temperatures ferroelectric/nonferroelectric of the exposed and unexposed samples, an opto-dielectric effect is observed. The efficiency of this opto-dielectric switching depends on the packing of the chromophore within the smectic layers.  相似文献

Abstract

The temperature and frequency dependences of the complex dielectric susceptibility of a ferroelectric liquid crystal near the smectic C*-smectic A phase transition have been calculated using the classical and generalized Landau models. It is shown that although the dielectric response of the S*C phase consists generally of four modes (soft, Goldstone, and two high frequency polarization modes) only three bands appear in the dielectric loss spectrum of ferroelectric liquid crystals at the SA–S*C phase transition. These results are in agreement with recent experimental data.  相似文献

The first clear experimental evidence of a dielectric relaxation in the B7 phase is given. The associated molecular process is probably the reorientation of the bent-shaped molecules about the long molecular axis. It is also shown that the dielectric constant strongly increases at the phase transition I-B7 pointing to a co-operative motion of ferroelectric clusters. Furthermore, a phase transition B7-BX is observed. The values of about 10 for the high frequency limit of the dielectric constants of the B7 and BX phases and the static dielectric constants of the isotropic phase are in agreement. Thus, in all the phases the main dipoles can reorient faster than 10-8 s, i.e. the experimental limit. Only in the supercooled BX phase were the dynamics of the transversal dipoles measured. Using atomic force microscopy, focal-conic domains modulated by parallel lines have been observed at room temperature.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulations are used to examine the cooperative creation of a polar state in fluids of two-state particles with nonzero dipole in the excited state. With lowering temperature such systems undergo a second-order transition from nonpolar to polar, paraelectric phase. The transition is accompanied by a dielectric anomaly of polarization susceptibility increasing by three orders of magnitude. The paraelectric phase is then followed by a formation of a nematic ferroelectric which further freezes into a fcc ferroelectric crystal by a first-order transition. A mean-field model of phase transitions is discussed.  相似文献

Molecular motion is one of the structural foundations for the development of functional molecular materials such as artificial motors and molecular ferroelectrics. Herein, we show that pendulum-like motion of the terminal group of a molecule causes a ferroelectric phase transition. Complex 4-methoxyanilinium tetrafluoroborate-18-crown-6 ([C(7)H(10)NO(18-crown-6)](+)[BF(4)](-), 1) shows a second-order ferroelectric phase transition at 127 K, together with an abrupt dielectric anomaly, Debye-type relaxation behavior, and the symmetry breaking confirmed by temperature dependence of second harmonic generation effect. The origin of the polarization is due to the order-disorder transition of the pendulum-like motions of the terminal para-methyl group of the 4-methoxyanilinium guest cation; that is, the freezing of pendulum motion at low temperature forces significant orientational motions of the guest molecules and thus induces the formation of the ferroelectric phase. The supramolecular bola-like ferroelectric is distinct from the precedent ferroelectrics and will open a new avenue for the design of polar functional materials.  相似文献

A nanocomposite with enhanced dielectric response is developed using poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF‐TrFE)] as matrix and Chemically modified high dielectric constant organic semiconductor—copper phthalocyanine oligomer (CuPc)—as filler. Transmission electron microscope (TEM)‐observed morphologies reveal that in the nanocomposite the average size of CuPc particles is about 25 nm [1/24 of that of CuPc in physical blend of P(VDF‐TrFE) and CuPc]. The hot‐press nanocomposite film with 15 wt % CuPc can realize a dielectric constant of 540 at 100 Hz. The enhanced dielectric response in the nanocomposite demonstrates the significance of the interface effect in raising the material responses far beyond that expected by simple mixing rules when there is a large dielectric contrast between the polymer matrix and the dielectric filler in the composite. It is also interesting to note that at high frequencies (such as 100 MHz) the nanocomposite has a dielectric constant of ~100 and this value is comparable to those of current materials used in microwave applications. At 105 °C that is near the ferroelectric‐to‐paraelectric phase transition temperature of the P(VDF‐TrFE) ferroelectric, a much higher dielectric constant (about 1200 at 100 Hz) is obtained. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fluorinated compound, (S)-4′′-(6-perfluoropentanoyoxyhexyl-1-oxy)-2′,3′-difluoro-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-[1,1′:4′,1′′]-terphenyl, which exhibits antiferroelectric SmCA*, ferroelectric SmC* and paraelectric SmA* phases, has been investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and frequency-dependent dielectric spectroscopy methods. X-ray studies have revealed that the layer thickness remains almost constant in the SmA* phase but within the SmC* and SmCA* phases it decreases with decreasing temperature, a step jump being observed only at the SmA*–SmC* transition. The tilt angle in the SmCA* phase decreases from 22.2° to 19.5°, and in the SmC* phase it decreases from 18.8° to 5.5°. Spontaneous polarisation is found to be quite high and varies between 74.1 and 118.7 nC cm?2. The variation in ε′ and ε′′ with temperature shows a discontinuous change at the transition temperatures. Goldstone mode relaxation is only observed in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases and is found to be of the Cole–Cole type. The soft mode is observed on application of a bias field near the SmC*–SmA* transition. Neither the soft mode nor the anti-phase azimuthal angle fluctuation mode is observed in SmCA*. Rotational viscosity decreases quite rapidly with temperature but in a different manner in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases. Activation energy for this process is found to be 48.14 kJ mol?1 in the SmC* phase.  相似文献

The relaxor ferroelectric (RFE) behavior in high‐energy electron‐irradiated poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF‐TrFE)] 80/20 mol % copolymer system is characterized over a broad frequency and temperature range. The dielectric properties remarkably vary with the irradiated dose in terms of the change from normal ferroelectric (FE) to RFE phase. During the RFE–paraelectric (PE) transition, the dielectric constants, as a function of temperature, can be described by the Vogel–Fulcher (V–F) relation. It has been found that the relationship between the real and imaginary part of dielectric constant in irradiated copolymer can be well fitted with modified Cole–Cole equation and Debye relaxation equation, exhibiting similar features as inorganic RFEs. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Since the discovery of the first ferroelectric Rochelle salt, most ferroelectrics have been investigated showing thermally triggered symmetry-breaking phase transition. Although photochromism arising from geometrical isomerization was reported as early as 1867, such photoswitchable ferroelectric crystals have scarcely been developed to date. Herein, we report that salicylideneaniline is a photochromic ferroelectric crystal. Upon photoirradiation, the dielectric constant shows obvious switching between high and low dielectric states, and more importantly, the ferroelectric polarization demonstrates quick and reversible switching. This work opens the gate to developing photoswitchable ferroelectrics, which holds great potential for applications in optically controlled smart devices.  相似文献

Dielectric studies of the first order phase transition of a ferroelectric liquid crystal material having the phase sequence chiral nematic to smectic C* have been performed using thin (2.5 mum) cells in the frequency range 0.01 Hz to 12 MHz. For planar alignment, one of the cell electrodes was covered with a polymer and rubbed. Optically well defined alignment was obtained by applying an a.c. field below the N*-SmC* transition. Charge accumulation was enhanced by depositing a thick polymer aligning layer for the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules. A sub-hertz frequency dielectric relaxation process is detected in smectic C*, in the chiral nematic and a few degrees into the isotropic phase, due to the charge accumulation between the polymer layer and the ferroelectric liquid crystal material. The effect of temperature and bias field dependences on the sub-hertz dielectric relaxation process are reported and discussed.  相似文献
