We discuss a general mechanism by which first integrals of mechanical systems, in particular systems that satisfy non-holonomic constraints, can be obtained from a systematic search for adjoint symmetries. Such an approach has already been used in our earlier work and is re-advocated here in the context of a recent analysis by Giachetta, in which first integrals are generated by vector fields which are not symmetries. Further advantages of our approach are: the fact that an essential projection operator associated to the constraints need not be related to some given fibre metric on the full evolution space, and the specific selection of a connection, which is naturally associated to this projection and the second-order dynamics on the constraint submanifold. The computational aspects of the method are illustrated by some simple examples.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigate the Sundman symmetries of second-order and third-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. These symmetries, which are in general nonlocal transformations, arise from generalised Sundman transformations of autonomous equations. We show that these transformations and symmetries can be calculated systematically and can be used to find first integrals of the equations.  相似文献

Using approximate symmetry methods for differential equations we have investigated the exact and approximate symmetries of a Lagrangian for the geodesic equations in the Kerr spacetime. Taking Minkowski spacetime as the exact case, it is shown that the symmetry algebra of the Lagrangian is 17 dimensional. This algebra is related to the 15 dimensional Lie algebra of conformal isometries of Minkowski spacetime. First introducing spin angular momentum per unit mass as a small parameter we consider first-order approximate symmetries of the Kerr metric as a first perturbation of the Schwarzschild metric. We then consider the second-order approximate symmetries of the Kerr metric as a second perturbation of the Minkowski metric. The approximate symmetries are recovered for these spacetimes and there are no non- trivial approximate symmetries. A rescaling of the arc length parameter for consistency of the trivial second-order approximate symmetries of the geodesic equations indicates that the energy in the charged-Kerr metric has to be rescaled and the rescaling factor is r-dependent. This re-scaling factor is compared with that for the Reissner–Nordström metric.  相似文献

A connection between the theory of superintegrable quantum-mechanical systems, which admit a maximal number of integrals of motion, and the standard Lie group theory is established. It is shown that the flows generated by first- and second-order Lie symmetries of the bidimensional Schrödinger equation can be classified and interpreted as quantum-mechanical operators which commute with integrable or superintegrable Hamiltonians. In this way, all known superintegrable potentials in the plane are naturally obtained and slightly more general integrals of motion are found.  相似文献

The Lie symmetries of the geodesic equations in a Riemannian space are computed in terms of the special projective group and its degenerates (affine vectors, homothetic vector and Killing vectors) of the metric. The Noether symmetries of the same equations are given in terms of the homothetic and the Killing vectors of the metric. It is shown that the geodesic equations in a Riemannian space admit three linear first integrals and two quadratic first integrals. We apply the results in the case of Einstein spaces, the Schwarzschild spacetime and the Friedman Robertson Walker spacetime. In each case the Lie and the Noether symmetries are computed explicitly together with the corresponding linear and quadratic first integrals.  相似文献

Using Lie approximate symmetry methods for differential equations second-order approximate symmetries of the geodesic equations for the Kerr–Newman-AdS (KN-AdS) spacetime are investigated. For this purpose the KN-AdS metric is considered as a second perturbation of the AdS metric. A rescaling of the arc length parameter for consistency of the trivial second-order approximate symmetries of the geodesic equations indicates that the energy in the KN-AdS spacetime has to be rescaled. There is an extra contribution to the energy of the KN-AdS spacetime due to the cosmological constant. This energy expression is compared with that for the Kerr–Newman (KN) spacetime.  相似文献

In the recent paper by one of the authors (MBS) and A. A. Malykh on the classification of second-order PDEs with four independent variables that possess partner symmetries [1], mixed heavenly equation and Husain equation appear as closely related canonical equations admitting partner symmetries. Here for the mixed heavenly equation and Husain equation, formulated in a two-component form, we present recursion operators, Lax pairs of Olver–Ibragimov–Shabat type and discover their Lagrangians, symplectic and bi-Hamiltonian structure. We obtain all point and second-order symmetries, integrals and bi-Hamiltonian representations of these systems and their symmetry flows together with infinite hierarchies of nonlocal higher symmetries.  相似文献

In this Letter we consider n degrees-of-freedom integrable Hamiltonian systems subjected to a non-Hamiltonian perturbation controlled by a small parameter ε. An obstruction to the analytic continuation of the integrals of motion of the unperturbed system with respect to ε is developed for sufficiently small perturbations. A general method for establishing the existence of quasi-periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems for vortex lattices is illustrated in a simple example involving two degrees of freedom. The geometry of intersecting singular manifolds of the Hamiltonians introduces suitable canonical transformations which put the Hamiltonian into the form of singular weakly coupled oscillators. As by-products of this procedure, additional integrals of motion are found for the leading term in the transformed Hamiltonian. These extra integrals are approximate invariants for the full Hamiltonians.  相似文献

Abstract

Similarity reductions and new exact solutions are obtained for a nonlinear diffusion equation. These are obtained by using the classical symmetry group and reducing the partial differential equation to various ordinary differential equations. For the equations so obtained, first integrals are deduced which consequently give rise to explicit solutions. Potential symmetries, which are realized as local symmetries of a related auxiliary system, are obtained. For some special nonlinearities new symmetry reductions and exact solutions are derived by using the nonclassical method.  相似文献

Liouville (super)integrability of a Hamiltonian system of differential equations is based on the existence of globally well-defined constants of the motion, while Lie point symmetries provide a local approach to conserved integrals. Therefore, it seems natural to investigate in which sense Lie point symmetries can be used to provide information concerning the superintegrability of a given Hamiltonian system. The two-dimensional oscillator and the central force problem are used as benchmark examples to show that the relationship between standard Lie point symmetries and superintegrability is neither straightforward nor universal. In general, it turns out that superintegrability is not related to either the size or the structure of the algebra of variational dynamical symmetries. Nevertheless, all of the first integrals for a given Hamiltonian system can be obtained through an extension of the standard point symmetry method, which is applied to a superintegrable nonlinear oscillator describing the motion of a particle on a space with non-constant curvature and spherical symmetry.  相似文献

We obtain the first integrals Tr(Rk) by using a differential equation of the Lax type of simpler structure than the one obtained in a recent paper. Certain questions raised in this paper on the relation between noncanonical symmetries S and complete integrability are answered. The problem of calculation of finite-amplitude waves on the cylindrical surface of an ideal incompressible dielectric liquid jet in a uniform electrostatic field collinear to the unperturbed jet axis is solved using a second-order asymptotic analytic procedure in ratio of the wave amplitude to the jet radius. Nonlinear corrections to the jet profile, velocity field potential, and electrostatic potentials inside and outside the jet are of resonant nature. The degenerate resonant interaction between the wave determining the initial strain and the waves excited due to nonlinearity of the hydrodynamic equations can take place for waves with different symmetries (different azimuth numbers).  相似文献

The paper deals with a class of integrals, the integrands of which contain the square of a solution of a second-order linear, ordinary differential equation. Such integrals often arise in quantum mechanics as normalization integrals or expectation values. A generalized, unified procedure for rewriting such an integral, associated with a differential equation of the Sturm-Liouville type with unspecified boundary conditions, as a parameter derivative is presented. The formula thus obtained can be used for the evaluation of various integrals of physical interest. As an application we present a simplified derivation of a formula given by de Alfaro and Regge, in which the quantal normalization integral is expressed in terms of the Jost function. Other applications to integrals involving special functions and to integrals associated with the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation are also presented. Furthermore, it is explained why an approximate formula for expectation values is much more accurate than one can expect from the usual, crude derivation of it, and why certain attempts to improve that derivation have failed.  相似文献
