We define a special type of additive map J on an effect algebra E called a compression. We call J(1) the focus of J and if p is the focus of a compression then p is called a projection. The set of projections in E is denoted by P(E). A compression J is direct if J(a) ≤ a for all a ε E. We show that direct compressions are equivalent to projections onto components of cartesian products. An effect algebra E is said to be compressible if every compression on E is uniquely determined by its focus and every compression on E has a supplement. We define and characterize the commutant C(p) of a projection p and show that a compression with focus p is direct if and only if C(p) = E. We show that P(E) is an orthomodular poset. It is proved that the cartesian product of effect algebras is compressible if and only if each component is compressible. We then consider compressible sequential effect algebras, Lüders maps and conditional probabilities.  相似文献

Transport measurements were performed on surface superlattices, formed by a grating gate on a two-dimensional electron gas. We find a suppression of the differential conductance with increasing electric fields, on a scale of a few V cm−1. Even more remarkable is a strong suppression of conductance with increasing temperatureT, where theT-dependence is quadratic. We attribute these observations to electron–electron (ee) scattering which, in the presence of an external modulated potential, can have a significant influence on the conductance. We also discuss the role of disorder in these systems.  相似文献

We study the notions of conditional probabilities, independence and ε-independence for states on symmetric logics. We prove that a non-atomic state on the logic with the Lyapunov’s property is determined by its specification of independent events. We present the examples of (1) Δ-subadditive but is not subadditive and (2) two-valued non Δ-subadditive states on symmetric logic. We investigate the independence relation transitivity for a Δ-subadditive state. We also study continuity properties of conditional probabilities and ε-independence relation with respect to natural pseudometric for Δ-subadditive state. We elaborate on the dynamics of noncommutative two-dimensional gauge field theories. We consider U(N) gauge theories with fermions in either the fundamental or the adjoint representation. Noncommutativity leads to a rather non-trivial dependence on theta (the noncommutativity parameter) and to a rich dynamics. In particular the mass spectrum of the noncommutative U(1) theory with adjoint matter is similar to that of ordinary (commutative) two-dimensional large-NSU(N) gauge theory with adjoint matter. The noncommutative version of the ?t Hooft model receives a non-trivial contribution to the vacuum polarization starting from three-loops order. As a result the mass spectrum of the noncommutative theory is expected to be different from that of the commutative theory.  相似文献

We analyze the symmetry-breaking patterns of grand unified theories from the point of view of a recently proposed criterion of renormalization-group naturalness. We perform the analysis on simple non-SUSY SU(5) and SO(10) and SUSY SU(5) GUTs. We find that the naturalness criterion can favor spontaneous symmetry breaking in the direction of the smallest of the maximal little groups. Some differences between theories with and without supersymmetry are also emphasized.  相似文献

We follow the classic strong-coupling theory of superconductivity through electron-phonon interaction with a buckling-like phonon mode. We find a nonzero d-wave order parameter in the sense of the Eliashberg theory. We derive a zero temperature gap Δ(0,π) at the gap edge versus the electron-phonon coupling strength g2 relation. We find that large enough value for Δ(0,π) as compared to those of high-Tc superconductors cannot be realized in the electron-buckling-like-phonon coupling on the CuO2 planes.  相似文献

We reconsider the Constituent Chiral Quark Model of Manohar and Georgi in the presence of SUL(3)×SUR(3) external sources. As recently emphasized by Weinberg, the corresponding effective Lagrangian is renormalizable in the large-Nc limit. We show, however, that the number of the required counterterms depends crucially on the value of gA and it is minimized for gA=1. We then find that with a rather small value for the constituent quark mass, which we fix phenomenologically to MQ=(190±40) MeV, the model reproduces rather well the values of several well-known low-energy constants. We also comment on the limitations of the model as well as on a few exceptional applications, to more complicated low-energy observables, where one can expect the model to make reasonably good predictions.  相似文献

We study planar waves in a circulating, draining fluid flow, which: (i) exhibit an analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in Quantum Mechanics; (ii) obey a Klein-Gordon equation on an ‘effective spacetime’ which resembles the Kerr spacetime of General Relativity; and (iii) may be observed in the laboratory using gravity waves in a shallow basin. We describe a modified AB effect which depends on two dimensionless parameters, associated with the circulation α and draining β rates; we call this the ‘αβ effect’. We show that the αβ effect is inherently asymmetric even in the low-frequency limit, and that it leads to novel interference patterns which carry the signature of both rotation and absorption.  相似文献

We explore the gauge coupling relations and the unification scale in F-theory SU(5) GUT broken down to the Standard Model by an internal U(1) Y gauge flux. We consider variants with exotic matter representations which may appear in these constructions and investigate their rôle in the effective field theory model. We make a detailed investigation on the conditions imposed on the extraneous matter to raise the unification scale and make the color triplets heavy in order to avoid fast proton decay. We also discuss in brief the implications on the gaugino masses.  相似文献

We consider Susskind fermions on a (d+1)-dimensional lattice interacting with aU(n) gauge field at finite temperature. We calculate the meson propagator in an expansion in 1/g 2 and 1/d and determine the meson masses. To the order considered the results are identical to those obtained at zero temperature.  相似文献

We show how central charges may be incorporated in a superconformal (D = 4) algebra for N = 2. The charges are no longer truly central and so are at variance with the well-known theorems on (super-) symmetries of the S-matrix. We discuss the most general effective Lagrangian obtained from the assumption that the degrees of freedom to be quantized, in a black hole, are on the horizon. The effective Lagrangian depends only on the induced metric and the extrinsic curvature of the (fluctuating) horizon, and the possible operators can be arranged in an expansion in powers of MP1/M, where MP1 is the Planck mass and M the black hole mass. We perform a semiclassical expansion of the action with a formalism which preserves general covariance explicitly. Quantum fluctuations over the classical solutions are described by a single scalar field living in the (2 + 1)-dimensional world-volume swept by the horizon, with a given coupling to the background geometry. We discuss the resulting field theory and we compute the black hole entropy with our formalism.  相似文献

We study the effective lagrangians of superconducting cosmic strings and the underlying anomaly structure leading to various effects. We show that fermionic superconducting cosmic (Nielsen-Olesen) strings arise as a consequence of a mixed anomaly of the form E · B′ where E is the electromagnetic field strength and B′ the core flux of the string. We show how this controls superconductivity, the index theorems, topological mass terms on domain walls, and string-axion interactions. We contrast this to global strinfs with Chern-Simons currents.  相似文献

We study a model of directed polymers in random environment in dimension 1 + d, given by a Brownian motion in a Poissonian potential. We study the effect of the density and the strength of inhomogeneities, respectively the intensity parameter ν of the Poisson field and the temperature inverse β. Our results are: (i) fine information on the phase diagram, with quantitative estimates on the critical curve; (ii) pathwise localization at low temperature and/or large density; (iii) complete localization in a favourite corridor for large νβ 2 and bounded β.  相似文献

It has been known that a good quality h-BN layer can only be grown within a narrow temperature window of 1020–1100 K on a copper substrate. We found that the growth temperature window on Cu(111) surface could be lowered up to 100 K by ionizing and/or exciting borazine precursor gas with an electron-beam. The structures of a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers grown at various substrate temperatures on a Cu(111) were examined using scanning tunneling microscopy. We found that the grown h-BN film exhibits highly inert behavior with wide bandgap semiconductor characteristics.  相似文献

We describe a supersymmetric model of strong and electroweak interactions based on the gauge groupSU(3)×SU(2)×U(1)×?(1). We concentrate on the pattern of the spontaneous symmetry breaking by the tree level scalar potential. It is possible to break the?(1) factor at superlarge energies relative to the simultaneous breaking scale ofSU(2)×U(1) and supersymmetry. The model has?(1) anomalies. Attempts to make an anomaly-free model based on the groupE 6 are described. We also comment on possible modifications of the?(1) anomaly problem due to gravitational effects.  相似文献

We study quantum wave packet revivals on two-dimensional infinite circular quantum wells (CQWs) and circular quantum dots with position-dependent mass (PDM) envisaging a possible experimental realization. We consider CQWs with radially varying mass, addressing particularly the cases where M(r)∝rw with w=1,2, or −2. The two PDM Hamiltonians currently allowed by theory were analyzed and we were able to construct a strong theoretical argument favoring one of them.  相似文献

We consider string junctions with endpoints on a set of branes of IIB string theory defining an ADE-type gauge Lie algebra. We show how to characterize uniquely equivalence classes of junctions related by string/brane crossing through invariant charges that count the effective number of prongs ending on each brane. Each equivalence class defines a point on a lattice of junctions. We define a metric on this lattice arising from the intersection pairing of junctions, and use self-intersection to identify junctions in the adjoint and fundamental representations of all ADE algebras. This information suffices to determine the relation between junction lattices and the Lie-algebra weight lattices. Arbitrary representations are built by allowing junctions with asymptotic (p,q) charges, on which the group of conjugacy classes of representations is represented additively. One can view the (p, q) asymptotic charges as Dynkin labels associated to two new fundamental weight vectors.  相似文献

We present solutions of a fermion-boson model based on the supersymmetric (Susy) extension of theU(N) σ-models with the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term. We study some properties of these solutions. We point out that the obtained solutions are related to the components of the energy-momentum tensor of the purely bosonicU(N)σ-model and that some classes of these solutions are traceless.  相似文献
