We analyze the hydrodynamic coupling of pairs of squirmers and the impact it has on their short and long-time behavior. The study combines an analytic analysis of the hydrodynamic interactions between pairs of squirmers with computer simulations to elucidate the quantitative capabilities of the theoretical approach. The numerical study allows us to address the motion of simple geometries of squirmers on long times and perform a complete discussion of the effective repulsive interactions in squirmer ensembles. The contrast between analytic and numerical results identifies the features of active motion responsible for such effective interactions. The framework developed also allows for an analysis of the hydrodynamic coupling between a squirmer and a solid wall and shows the possibility of bounded motion next to a solid wall. 相似文献

The problem of the motion of a thin wing in a stratified fluid near the bottom is considered. A solution is found using the logarithmic dynamic potential. The dependence of the hydrodynamic force and moment on the input parameters, namely, the Strouhal and Froude numbers and the distance to the bottom, is studied. An important feature of the amplitudes of nonstationary loads on the wing is their nonmonotonic character in the case where the frequency of vibrations is lower than the Brunt-Väisälä frequency, which is explained by the interaction between the wing's vibrations and the internal waves reflected from the bottom. 相似文献

This paper considers the steady-state free convection flow arising from an infinitely long horizontal line source of heat embedded in the base of a vertical adiabatic surface when the ambient fluid is a non-Newtonian fluid for moderately large values of the generalized Grashof numbers by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. In particular, the second-order corrections to account for the non-boundary layer effects have been predicted. A family of numerical solutions for the power-law fluid behavior indexn ranging from 0.4 to 2.0 and for the Prandtl numberPr=10 and 100 are reported. 相似文献

Unsteady gravity-driven flow of a thin slender rivulet of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid on a plane inclined at an angle α to the horizontal is considered. Unsteady similarity solutions are obtained for both converging sessile rivulets (when 0 < α < π/2) in the case x < 0 with t < 0, and diverging pendent rivulets (when π/2 < α < π) in the case x > 0 with t > 0, where x denotes a coordinate measured down the plane and t denotes time. Numerical and asymptotic methods are used to show that for each value of the power-law index N there are two physically realisable solutions, with cross-sectional profiles that are ‘single-humped’ and ‘double-humped’, respectively. Each solution predicts that at any time t the rivulet widens or narrows according to |x | (2N+1)/2(N+1) and thickens or thins according to |x | N/(N+1) as it flows down the plane; moreover, at any station x, it widens or narrows according to |t | ?N/2(N+1) and thickens or thins according to |t | ?N/(N+1). The length of a truncated rivulet of fixed volume is found to behave according to |t | N/(2N+1). 相似文献

This research work is aimed at proposing models for the hydrodynamic force and torque experienced by a spherical particle moving near a solid wall in a viscous fluid at finite particle Reynolds numbers. Conventional lubrication theory was developed based on the theory of Stokes flow around the particle at vanishing particle Reynolds number. In order to account for the effects of finite particle Reynolds number on the models for hydrodynamic force and torque near a wall, we use four types of simple motions at different particle Reynolds numbers. Using the lattice Boltzmann method and considering the moving boundary conditions, we fully resolve the flow field near the particle and obtain the models for hydrodynamic force and torque as functions of particle Reynolds number and the dimensionless gap between the particle and the wall. The resolution is up to 50 grids per particle diameter. After comparing numerical results of the coefficients with conventional results based on Stokes flow, we propose new models for hydrodynamic force and torque at different particle Reynolds numbers. It is shown that the particle Reynolds number has a significant impact on the models for hydrodynamic force and torque. Furthermore, the models are validated against general motions of a particle and available modeling results from literature. The proposed models could be used as sub-grid scale models where the flows between particle and wall can not be fully resolved, or be used in Lagrangian simulations of particle-laden flows when particles are close to a wall instead of the currently used models for an isolated particle. 相似文献

The steady boundary-layer flow of a non-Newtonian fluid, represented by a power-law model, over a moving wedge in a moving fluid is studied in this paper. The transformed boundary-layer equation is solved numerically for some values of the involved parameters. The effects of these parameters on the skin friction coefficient are analyzed and discussed. It is found that multiple solutions exist when the wedge and the fluid move in the opposite directions, near the region of separation. It is also found that the drag force is reduced for dilatant fluids compared to pseudo-plastic fluids. 相似文献

A numerical solution of the developing non-isothermal flow of a generalised power-law fluid in a slightly converging slit is presented, a problem which is relevance to some polymer processing operations. The results are presented in graphical form. They indicate that inertia forces and kinetic energy increases along the slit and these factors affect the development of the velocity and stress distributions. The effect of other parameters on the process is also brought out. 相似文献

Summary A model has been developed for the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid past a porous sphere. The drag force exerted on a porous sphere moving in a power-law fluid is obtained by an approximate solution of equations of motion in the creeping flow regime. It is predicted that the effect of the pseudoplastic anomaly on the drag force is more pronounced at large porosity parameters.

The flow of a power-law fluid is investigated in an asymmetric channel caused by the movement of peristaltic waves with the same speed but with different amplitudes and phases on the flexible walls of the channel. The differential equation governing the flow is non-linear and can admit non-unique solutions. There exist two different physically meaningful solutions one satisfying the boundary conditions at the upper wall and the other at the lower wall. The effects of the power-law nature of the fluid on the pumping characteristics and axial velocity are studied in detail. 相似文献

We develop semi-analytical, self-similar solutions for the oscillatory boundary layer (‘Stokes layer’) in a semi-infinite power-law fluid bounded by an oscillating wall (the so-called Stokes problem). These solutions differ significantly from the classical solution for a Newtonian fluid, both in the non-sinusoidal form of the velocity oscillations and in the manner at which their amplitude decays with distance from the wall. In particular, for shear-thickening fluids the velocity reaches zero at a finite distance from the wall, and for shear-thinning fluids it decays algebraically with distance, in contrast to the exponential decay for a Newtonian fluid. We demonstrate numerically that these semi-analytical, self-similar solutions provide a good approximation to the flow driven by a sinusoidally oscillating wall. 相似文献

Magnetohydrodynamic flow of an electrically conducting power-law fluid in the vicinity of a constantly rotating infinite disk in the presence of a uniform magnetic field is considered. The steady, laminar and axi-symmetric flow is driven solely by the rotating disk, and the incompressible fluid obeys the inelastic Ostwald de Waele power-law model. The three-dimensional boundary layer equations transform exactly into a set of ordinary differential equations in a generalized similarity variable. These ODEs are solved numerically for values of the magnetic parameter m up to 4.0. The effect of the magnetic field is to reduce, and eventually suppress, the radially directed outflow. An accompanying reduction of the axial flow towards the disk is observed, together with a thinning of the boundary layer adjacent to the disk, thereby increasing the torque required to maintain rotation of the disk at the prescribed angular velocity. The influence of the magnetic field is more pronounced for shear-thinning than for shear-thickening fluids. 相似文献

Magnetohydrodynamic flow of an electrically conducting power-law fluid over a stretching sheet in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field is investigated by using an exact similarity transformation. The effect of magnetic field on the now characteristics is explored numerically, and it is concluded that the magnetic field tends to make the boundary layer thinner, thereby increasing the wall friction. 相似文献

Squeeze flow in the gap between non-parallel circular plates of radius R is discussed. The test material is assumed to be a power-law fluid, with a no-slip boundary condition at the plates. If the mean separation between the plates is h, and the angle of inclination between the plates is ? ? h/R, the force on the plates is perturbed only at O(?2) and is increased by less than 10% if ? < 0.35h/R. A torque O(?) tends to return the plates to a parallel configuration. 相似文献

In this paper the problem of momentum and heat transfer in a thin liquid film of power-law fluid on an unsteady stretching
surface has been studied. Numerical solutions are obtained for some representative values of the unsteadiness parameter S and the power-law index n for a wide range of the generalized Prandtl number, 0.001 ≤ Pr ≤ 1000. Typical temperature and velocity profiles, the dimensionless film thickness, free-surface temperature, and the surface
heat fluxes are presented at selected controlling parameters. The results show that increasing the value of n tends to increase the boundary-layer thickness and broadens the temperature distributions. The free-surface temperature of
a shear thinning fluid is larger than that of a Newtonian fluid, but the opposite trend is true for a shear thickening fluid.
For small generalized Prandtl numbers, the surface heat flux increases with a decrease in n, but the impacts of n on the heat transfer diminish for Pr greater than a moderate value (approximately 1 ≤ Pr ≤ 10, depending on the magnitude of S). 相似文献

Steady two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of an electrically conducting power-law fluid over a stretching surface is investigated when the surface is stretched in its own plane with a velocity proportional to the distance from the stagnation-point. We have discussed the uniqueness of the solution except when the ratio of free stream velocity and stretching velocity is equal to 1. The effect of magnetic field on the flow characteristic is explored numerically and it is concluded that the velocity at a point decreases/increases with increase in the magnetic field when the free stream velocity is less/greater than the stretching velocity. It is further observed that for a given value of magnetic parameter M, the dimensionless shear stress coefficient |F″(0)| increases with increase in power-law index n when the value of the ratio of free stream velocity and stretching velocity is close to 1 but not equal to 1. But when the value of this ratio further differs from 1, the variation of |F″(0)| with n is non-monotonic. 相似文献

Waves that occur at the surface of a falling film of thin power-law fluid on a vertical plane are investigated. Using the method of integral relations an evolution equation is derived for two types of waves equation which are possible under long wave approximation. This equation reveals the presence of both kinematic and dynamic wave processes which may either act together or singularly dominate the wave field depending on the order of different parameters. It is shown that, at a small flow rate, kinematic waves dominate the flow field and the energy is acquired from the mean flow during the interaction of the waves, while, for high flow rate, inertial waves dominate and the energy comes from the kinematic waves. It is also found that this exchange of energy between kinematic and inertial waves strongly depends on the power-law index n. Linear stability analysis predicts the contribution of different terms in the wave mechanism. Further, it is found that the surface tension plays a double role: for a kinematic wave process, it exerts dissipative effects so that a finite amplitude case may be established, but for a dynamic wave process it yields dispersion. Further, it is shown that the non-Newtonian character n plays a vital role in controlling the role of the term that contains surface tension in the above processes. 相似文献
