The structure and properties of homogeneous copolymers of ethylene and styrene (ES) and ethylene and octene (EO) were compared. Semicrystalline copolymers presented a broad spectrum of solid‐state structures from highly crystalline, lamellar morphologies to the granular, fringed micellar morphology of low‐crystallinity copolymers. The combined observations from density, thermal behavior, and morphology with primarily atomic force microscopy revealed that the crystalline phase depended on the amount of comonomer but was not strongly affected by whether the comonomer was styrene or octene. This was consistent with the exclusion of both comonomers from the crystal. However, ES and EO showed strong differences in the amorphous phase. ES had a much higher β‐relaxation temperature than EO, which was attributed to restrictions on chain mobility imposed by the bulky phenyl side group. The deformation behavior of ES and EO exhibited the same trends with comonomer content, from necking and cold drawing typical of a semicrystalline thermoplastic to uniform drawing and high recovery characteristic of an elastomer. Aspects of deformation behavior that depended on crystallinity, such as yielding and cold drawing, were determined primarily by comonomer content. However, the difference in the β‐relaxation temperature resulted in much higher strain hardening of ES than EO. This was particularly evident with low‐crystallinity, elastomeric copolymers. A classification scheme for semicrystalline copolymers based on comonomer content, previously developed for EO, was remarkably applicable to ES. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The ethylene‐octene block copolymers in this study consist of long crystallizable sequences with low comonomer content alternating with rubbery amorphous blocks with high comonomer content. The crystallizable blocks form lamellae that organize into space‐filling spherulites even when the fraction of crystallizable block is so low that the crystallinity is only 7%. These unusual spherulites are highly elastic and recover from strains as high as 300%. This new class of thermoplastic elastomers is fundamentally different from conventional elastomeric olefin copolymers that depend on isolated, fringed micellar‐like crystals to provide the junctions for the elastomeric network. The elastomeric block copolymers are shown to be unique in that a hierarchical organization of space‐filling lamellar spherulites provides the junctions for the elastomeric network. The deformation of the elastic spherulites is readily studied with small angle light scattering, wide angle X‐ray diffractograms, and atomic force microscopy. At strains in excess of 300%, the spherulites break up into a fibrillar structure following lamellar deformation processes that are similar to those established for high density ethylenic polymers. The crystalline transformation produces a stiffer elastomer that exhibits complete recovery on subsequent loadings. Similar experiments on elastomeric random ethylene‐octene copolymers where fringed micellar crystals provide the physical crosslinks that connect the rubbery, amorphous chain segments reveal significant differences. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gas permeation properties of crosslinked membranes prepared from a series of poly(ethylene oxide-co-epichlorohydrin) (P(EO/EP)) copolymers with different contents of ethylene oxide are determined by using the constant-volume and pressure-increase method. In addition to the chemical composition, the transport properties are related to the main characteristics of copolymers like the glass transition temperature, crystallinity and crosslinking ratio. Permeation measurements of He, H2, N2, O2, CO2 and CH4 show that the permeabilities are nearly constant up to an EO content of about 75–80 mol%, then increase rapidly up to a maximum around 90 mol% of EO in the copolymers. The same behavior is observed for the diffusion coefficient and the CO2 sorption coefficient. The presence of an optimal EO composition is explained by the competition between crystalline and amorphous EO sequences. The copolymers present very high CO2 permeability and selectivity respect to other permanent gases even in gas mixtures and under high pressures.  相似文献

AB‐type block copolymers with poly(trimethylene carbonate) [poly(TMC); A] and poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO; B; number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 5000] blocks [poly(TMC)‐b‐PEO] were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in the presence of monohydroxy PEO with stannous octoate as a catalyst. Mn of the resulting copolymers increased with increasing TMC content in the feed at a constant molar ratio of the monomer to the catalyst (monomer/catalyst = 125). The thermal properties of the AB diblock copolymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The melting temperature of the PEO blocks was lower than that of the homopolymer, and the crystallinity of the PEO block decreased as the length of the poly(TMC) blocks increased. The glass‐transition temperature of the poly(TMC) blocks was dependent on the diblock copolymer composition upon first heating. The static contact angle decreased sharply with increasing PEO content in the diblock copolymers. Compared with poly(TMC), poly(TMC)‐b‐PEO had a higher Young's modulus and lower elongation at break. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 4819–4827, 2005  相似文献

We prepared two block copolymers 1 and 2 consisting of a third‐generation dendron with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) peripheries and a linear polystyrene (PS) coil. The PS molecular weights were 2000 g/mol and 8000 g/mol for 1 and 2 , respectively. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data indicated that neither of the block copolymers showed glass transition, implying that there was no microphase separation between the PEO and PS blocks. However, upon doping the block copolymers with lithium triflate (lithium concentration per ethylene oxide unit = 0.2), two distinct glass transitions were seen, corresponding to the salt‐doped PEO and PS blocks, respectively. The morphological analysis using small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that a hexagonal columnar morphology was induced in salt‐doped sample 1‐Li+ , whereas the other sample ( 2‐Li+ ) with a longer PS coil revealed a lamellar structure. In particular, in the SAXS data of 2‐Li+ , an abrupt reduction in the lamellar thickness was observed near the PS glass transition temperature (Tg), in contrast to the SAXS data for 1‐Li+ . This reduction implies that there is a lateral expansion of the molecular section in the lamellar structure, which can be interpreted by the conformational energy stabilization of the long PS coil above Tg. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of two or more ethylene–styrene (ES) copolymers that differed primarily in the comonomer composition of the copolymers were studied. Available thermodynamic models for copolymer–copolymer blends were utilized to determine the criteria for miscibility between two ES copolymers differing in styrene content and also between ES copolymers and the respective homopolymers, polystyrene and linear polyethylene. Model estimations were compared with experimental observations based primarily on melt‐blended ES/ES systems, particularly via the analysis of the glass‐transition (Tg ) behavior from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solid‐state dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. The critical comonomer difference in the styrene content at which phase separation occurred was estimated to be about 10 wt % for ES copolymers with a molecular weight of about 105 and was in general agreement with the experimental observations. The range of ES copolymers that could be produced by the variation of the comonomer content allowed the study of blends with amorphous and semicrystalline components. Crystallinity differences for the blends, as determined by DSC, appeared to be related to the overlapping of the Tg of the amorphous component with the melting range of the semicrystalline component and/or the reduction in the mobility of the amorphous phase due to the presence of the higher Tg of the amorphous blend component. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC), variable heating rate DSC, an independent rapid heating rate method for melting points, and cyclic mechanical testing were used to study semicrystalline thermoplastic elastomeric polypropylenes (ELPPs) and related semicrystalline polyolefins including ethylene copolymers. Low crystallinity (ca., 9 and 15%) ELPP samples were studied by AFM in the nonoriented and melt‐oriented states. AFM images taken as a function of time after quenching of a melt‐drawn and highly nucleated film resolved details of secondary crystallization involving lateral growth on the ordered row‐nucleated structures. For nonoriented films, isothermal melt crystallization at high temperatures (110 °C) led to similar features for the two ELPPs. The dominant crystalline morphology studied by AFM consisted of small (several nm in width) granular crystallites organized into immature but large spherulites spanning tens of microns. A striking cross‐hatch morphology was detected in regions of the surface in 110 °C crystallized samples, which is contrasted with melt‐drawn films where row nucleated structures dominated the morphology in the film under no external stress. AFM was also used to monitor the morphological changes that occurred as the films were stretched at 25 °C. Break‐down of lamellae was observed, resulting in oriented narrow fibrils. Cyclic stress‐strain curves showed the expected result where lower crystallinity ELPPs had higher recoverable levels of set after both 100 and 500% elongation. TMDSC was used to resolve the broad melting and recrystallization regions in these low to medium crystallinity ELPP systems, and to contrast the results with ethylene copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of segmented copolymers were synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) oligomers and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) by a two‐step solution polymerization reaction. PET oligomers were obtained by glycolysis depolymerization. Structural features were defined by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was calculated via 1H NMR spectroscopy. The content of soft PEG segments was higher than that of hard PET segments. A single glass‐transition temperature was detected for all the synthesized segmented copolymers. This observation was found to be independent of the initial PET‐to‐PEG molar ratio. The molar masses of the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 4448–4457, 2004  相似文献

Ethylene and 10‐undecen‐1‐ol copolymers, prepared using a nickel complex as catalyst, were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffraction, and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The behavior exhibited by copolymers containing incorporated 10‐undecen‐1‐ol amounts within 0.5 and 4.6 mol % was compared with neat polyethylene. DSC revealed that a new crystalline region with lower thickness lamellae emerges in copolymers due to the side‐chains crystallization. Nevertheless, the global crystallization degree decreases due to the loss of crystallinity that occurs in a greater extent in PE‐like regions. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy detected two processes, a low activation energy process below ?20 °C related with localized mobility increasing in intensity and deviating to higher temperatures with the increase in 10‐undecen‐1‐ol amount, and a high activation energy process ascribed to the glass transition, located at higher temperatures for the different copolymers relatively to neat polyethylene. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(δ‐valerolactone) (PVL), poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA), or poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) as biodegradable polyesters were prepared to examine the phase transition of diblock copolymer solutions. MPEG–PCL and MPEG–PVL diblock copolymers and MPEG–PLLA and MPEG–PLGA diblock copolymers were synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone or δ‐valerolactone in the presence of HCl · Et2O as a monomer activator at room temperature and by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide or a mixture of L ‐lactide and glycolide in the presence of stannous octoate at 130 °C, respectively. The synthesized diblock copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR, IR, and gel permeation chromatography. The phase transitions for diblock copolymer aqueous solutions of various concentrations were explored according to the temperature variation. The diblock copolymer solutions exhibited the phase transition from gel to sol with increasing temperature. As the polyester block length of the diblock copolymers increased, the gel‐to‐sol transition moved to a lower concentration region. The gel‐to‐sol transition showed a dependence on the length of the polyester block segment. According to X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry thermal studies, the gel‐to‐sol transition of the diblock copolymer solutions depended on their degrees of crystallinity because water could easily diffuse into amorphous polymers in comparison with polymers with a crystalline structure. The crystallinity markedly depended on both the distinct character and composition of the block segment. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5784–5793, 2004  相似文献

Novel polyisophthalamides containing pendent poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) sequences were prepared by grafting PEO onto poly(5‐hydroxy‐isophthalamide)s (HO‐PIPAs). First, an optimized method of synthesis was applied to prepare HO‐PIPAs, following the rules of the direct polyamidation reaction promoted by triphenyl phosphite and catalyzed by pyridine. Next, the modification of HO‐PIPAs was performed by a nucleophilic substitution reaction with chlorine‐terminated PEO monomethyl ether of average molecular weight 100, 550, and 1000 g/mol. The modification (grafting) reaction was optimized to assure virtually 100% yield. Polymers behaved as graft or brush‐like copolymers of polyisophthalamide (PIPA) and PEO, covering a wide range of ratios of PIPA/PEO. Physical properties, such as solubility, glass transition temperature, and thermal resistance were determined. Special attention was paid to the affinity of the novel copolymers for water. It was realized that with a high content of PEO, the materials could absorb water in amounts exceeding their own weight. Gravimetric methods and water contact angle measurements were used to quantify the hydrophilicity of the current PIPA‐g‐PEO copolymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was blended with a frustrated liquid‐crystalline polymer, poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐4,4′‐bibenzoate) (PETBB55), in the weight ratio 70:30. Under the melt conditions used for blending, NMR analysis showed that some transesterification had occurred. Accordingly, the blended product resembled a blocky copolymer more closely than it did a physical blend. A random copolymer with the same composition was synthesized for comparison. The study examined the effect of the comonomer distribution (blocky vs random) on the thermal behavior and oxygen transport properties of the glassy and cold‐drawn polymers. The glass‐transition temperatures and the crystallization behavior suggested that the PETBB55 blocks phase‐separated as very small domains. Higher levels of orientation, as indicated by higher densities and higher trans glycol fractions, were achieved by the cold drawing of the blocky copolymer. It was speculated that the cold drawing of the blocky copolymer at temperatures up to the glass‐transition temperature of the PETBB55 blocks produced highly oriented PETBB55 domains. Constraints imposed by connections between PET and the PETBB55 blocks prevented the relaxation of the continuous PET phase, even at temperatures well above the glass‐transition temperature of the PET blocks. In this sense, the blocky copolymer embodied the concept of a self‐reinforcing polymer. As a result, an improved oxygen barrier was obtained over a wider range of cold‐draw temperatures with the blocky copolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The deformation behavior of homogeneous ethylene‐1‐octene copolymers was investigated as a function of the crystallinity and the crystal size and perfection, respectively, by wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray scattering using synchrotron radiation. The crystallinity and the crystal size and perfection, respectively, are controlled by the copolymer composition and the condition of melt crystallization. The deformation includes rotation of crystals, followed by plastic deformation and complete melting of the initial crystal population, and final formation of microfibrils. The process of rotation, plastic deformation, and melting of crystals of the initial structure is completed at lower strain if the size and perfection of the crystals, respectively, decrease, that is, if crystals thermally melt at lower temperature. The kinetics of the fibrillation of the initial structure seems independent of the crystal symmetry, that is, rotation and melting of pseudohexagonal and orthorhombic polyethylene crystals (as evident in low‐crystalline specimens) are similar. The structure of the microfibrils, before and after stress release, is almost independent of the condition of prior melt crystallization, which supports the notion of complete melting of the initial crystal population. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New challenges and opportunities for polyolefin blends arise from the recent introduction of olefin block copolymers (OBCs). In this study, the effect of chain blockiness on the miscibility and phase behavior of ethylene‐octene (EO) copolymer blends was studied. Binary blends of two statistical copolymers (EO/EO blends) that differed in comonomer content were compared with blends of an EO with a blocky EO copolymer (EO/OBC blends). The blends were rapidly quenched to retain the phase morphology in the melt and the phase volumes were obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Two EOs of molecular weight about 100 kg/mol were miscible if the difference in octene content was less than about 10 mol % and immiscible if the octene content difference was greater than about 13 mol %. The blocky nature of the OBCs reduced the miscibility and broadened the partial miscibility window of the EO/OBC blends compared with the EO/EO blends. The EO/OBC blends were miscible if the octene content difference was less than 7 mol % and immiscible above 13 mol % octene content difference. It was also found that the phase behavior of EO/OBC blends strongly depended on blend composition even for constituent polymers of about the same molecular weight. Significantly more demixing was observed in an OBC‐rich blend (EO/OBC 30/70 v/v) than in an OBC‐poor blend (EO/OBC 70/30 v/v). An interpretation based on extractable fractions of the OBC described the major features of the EO/OBC (30/70 v/v) blends. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallinity development in heterogeneous ethylene‐1‐butene copolymers is compared with that in ethylene copolymers, with more bulky 1‐heptene as a comonomer. The thermal transitions of the 1‐heptene based copolymers persistently occur at higher temperatures than of the corresponding 1‐butene copolymers. The earlier crystallization onset is reflected in thicker primary crystals, which in turn are associated with the presence of longer ethylene sequences because of the inaccessibility of 1‐heptene to sterically shielded catalytic sites. In addition, the 1‐heptene based copolymers are characterized by a higher degree of primary crystallinity, whereas the 1‐butene copolymers exhibit more prominent secondary crystallization. The 1‐butene based copolymers thus have a less heterogeneous chemical composition distribution. At high comonomer contents, the highly heterogeneous nature of the 1‐heptene copolymers is emphasized by a more pronounced presence of low crystalline spherulite inclusions accomplished by the liquid–liquid phase separation of dissimilar polymeric chains before crystallization. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relationship between the structure and mechanical properties has been established for several copolymers of ethylene and 5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene synthesized with a metallocene catalyst. A dependence on the composition and polymerization temperature has been found. The branches cannot be incorporated into the orthorhombic crystal lattice, and consequently, structural parameters such as the crystallinity and crystal size are considerably affected as the 5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene content increases in the copolymers. The viscoelastic relaxations have been analyzed and compared with those exhibited by high‐density polyethylene (HDPE). The β relaxation does not appear in HDPE and is exclusively seen in the copolymers. As the 5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene content rises, the intensity of this process is increased, and its location is shifted to a lower temperature up to comonomer contents of approximately 6–8 mol % in the copolymers. On the other hand, the α mechanism associated with motion within the crystalline regions is also moved to a lower temperature and its intensity is diminished as the 5,7‐dimethylocta‐1,6‐diene molar fraction increases in the copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis, microstructure, and thermal behavior of a series of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) copolymers containing nitroterephthalic units are described. These novel copolyesters were synthesized by transesterification followed by melt copolycondensation of dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl nitroterephthalate mixtures with ethylene glycol. The molar ratio of the two comonomers in the feed varied from 95/5 to 25/75. Furthermore, PET and poly(ethylene nitroterephthalate) homopolymers were synthesized with the same method and comparatively studied. Copolyester compositions were practically the same as in the feed, and weight‐average molecular weights ranged from 10,000 to 60,000. The two monomeric units were randomly distributed along the polymer chain, and the experimentally determined average sequence lengths were in accordance with ideal copolycondensation statistics. Melting temperatures and enthalpies of the copolyesters decreased with increasing content in nitroterephthalic units, and they all showed a single glass‐transition temperature superior to that of PET. They appeared to be stable up to 300 °C, and thermal degradation occurred in two well‐differentiated steps. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 3761–3770, 2000  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers containing β‐lactam groups on the polyisoprene block were synthesized from poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (IEO) diblock copolymer precursors, prepared by anionic polymerization. β‐Lactam functionalization was achieved via reaction of the polyisoprene (PI) block with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and subsequent reduction. The resulting block copolymers were molecularly characterized by SEC, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopies and DSC. Functionalization was found to proceed in high yields, altering the solubility properties of the PI block and those of the functionalized diblocks. Hydrogen bond formation is assumed to be responsible for the decreased crystallinity of the poly(ethylene oxide) block (PEO) in the bulk state as indicated by DSC measurements. The self‐assembly behavior of the β‐lactam functionalized poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) copolymers (LIEO) in aqueous solutions was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), static light scattering (SLS), fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nearly spherical loose aggregates were formed by the LIEO block copolymers, having lower aggregation numbers and higher cmc values compared to the IEO precursors, as a result of the increased polarity of the β‐lactam rings incorporated in the PI blocks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To develop new types of biodegradable polymers possessing predictable responses to changes in temperature, ABA‐type and BAB‐type triblock copolymers composed of various polydepsipeptides (PDP) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (PDP‐PEG‐PDP and PEG‐PDP‐PEG) were synthesized. The specific focus of this study was on the effect of the different side‐chain groups of various amino acids on the temperature‐responsive behavior of the triblock copolymers. An ABA‐type triblock copolymer containing the less hydrophobic glycine (PGG‐PEG‐PGG) did not exhibit any temperature‐responsive behavior; however, ABA‐type triblock copolymers containing the hydrophobic α‐amino acids, L ‐leucine and L ‐phenylalanine (PGL‐PEG‐PGL or PGF‐PEG‐PGF), did exhibit temperature‐responsive behavior. The cloud point of PGF‐PEG‐PGF was 10 °C lower than that of PGL‐PEG‐PGL. It can be possible to control temperature‐sensitivity by changing not only PDP segment length but also kind of α‐amino acid in PDP segment. Moreover, BAB‐type triblock copolymer containing L ‐leucine (PEG‐PGL‐PEG) showed temperature‐responsive sol‐gel transition. Because polydepsipeptides are biodegradable polymers, the information obtained in this study is useful to design biodegradable injectable polymers having controllable temperature‐sensitivity for biomedical use.© 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
