On the existence of periodic solutions of Rayleigh equations

A global solution curve for a class of periodic problems, including the pendulum equation

Using continuation methods and bifurcation theory, we study the exact multiplicity of periodic solutions, and the global solution structure, for a class of periodically forced pendulum-like equations. Our results apply also to the first order equations. We also show that by choosing a forcing term, one can produce periodic solutions with any number of Fourier coefficients arbitrarily prescribed.     

On the longitudinal librations of Hyperion

We study a nonlinear, second order ordinary differential equation that models the longitudinal librations of the longest axis L of a satellite with respect to the planet-satellite center line C. Combining theoretical arguments and numerical evidence we prove that, in the case of Hyperion, a satellite of Saturn, the angle A between L and C can change in a chaotic manner at the moments when the distance from Hyperion to Saturn reaches its minimum value. More precisely, given an arbitrary sequence of zeros and ones, we show that there is at least one initial velocity of A such that its successive positions reproduce the given sequence.      

On a periodic boundary value problem for cyclic feedback type linear functional differential systems

Nonimprovable effective sufficient conditions are established for the unique solvability of the periodic problem

Asymptotically almost periodic solutions of abstract retarded functional differential equations of second order

We establish existence of asymptotically almost periodic mild solutions for a class of semi-linear second-order abstract retarded functional differential equations with infinite delay. Research supported in part by FONDECYT, grant 1050314.     

On orbits of automorphism groups II

Let G be a finite group, let A be a group of automorphisms of G and let C_G(A) denote the subgroup of fixed points of A in G. If the order of C_G(A) is coprime to the number of orbits of A in G, then C_G(A) is contained in the autocommutator subgroup [G, A]. Indefinite damping in mechanical systems and gyroscopic stabilization

This paper deals with gyroscopic stabilization of the unstable system Mẍ + Dẋ + Kx = 0, with positive definite mass and stiffness matrices M and K, respectively, and an indefinite damping matrix D. The main question is for which skew-symmetric matrices G the system Mẍ + (D + G)ẋ + Kx = 0 can become stable? After investigating special cases we find an appropriate solution of the Lyapunov matrix equation for the general case. Examples show the deviation of the stability limit found by the Lyapunov method from the exact value.      

On a stability theorem of liapunov

A complex function theory argument enables us to give a simple and elegant proof of a stability theorem of Liapunov.     

On the Schwarz reflection principle for monogenic functions

Let ∑ be either an oriented hyperplane or the unit sphere in , let be open and connected and let be an open and connected domain in such that . If in is a null solution of the Dirac operator (also called a monogenic function in ) which is continuously extendable to , then conditions upon are given enabling the monogenic extension of across . In such a way Schwarz reflection type principles for monogenic functions are established in the Spin (1) and Spin cases. The Spin (1) case includes the classical Schwarz reflection principle for holomorphic functions in the plane. The Spin case deals with so-called “half boundary value problems” for the Dirac operator. Pairs of positive solutions for the periodic scalar p-Laplacian

We study a nonlinear periodic problem driven by the scalar p-Laplacian and having a nonsmooth potential (hemivariational inequality). Using a combination of variational techniques and degree-theoretic methods based on a degree map for certain multivalued perturbations of (S)₊operators, we establish the existence of two positive solutions.     

Irreducible <Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis>-Brauer characters of <Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis>-power degree for the symmetric and alternating groups

Starting from the question when all irreducible p-Brauer characters for a symmetric or an alternating group are of p-power degree, we classify the p-modular irreducible representations of p-power dimension in some families of representations for these groups. In particular, this then allows to confirm a conjecture by W. Willems for the alternating groups. Received: 14 June 2006     

On the Yao-Yao partition theorem

The Yao-Yao partition theorem states that for any probability measure μ on having a density which is continuous and bounded away from 0, it is possible to partition into 2ⁿ regions of equal measure for μ in such a way that every affine hyperplane of avoids at least one of the regions. Universal Laurent series in finitely connected domains

Universal Laurent series where the universal approximation is valid on the boundary of the multiple connected open Ω appears for the first time in [2]. Local estimates and global existence for strongly nonlinear parabolic equations with locally integrable data

We obtain existence results for some strongly nonlinear Cauchy problems posed in and having merely locally integrable data. The equations we deal with have as principal part a bounded, coercive and pseudomonotone operator of Leray-Lions type acting on , they contain absorbing zero order terms and possibly include first order terms with natural growth. For any p > 1 and under optimal growth conditions on the zero order terms, we derive suitable local a-priori estimates and consequent global existence results.
