Water around hydrophobic groups mediates hydrophobic interactions that play key roles in many chemical and biological processes. Thus, the molecular‐level elucidation of the properties of water in the vicinity of hydrophobic groups is important. We report on the structure and dynamics of water at two oppositely charged hydrophobic ion/water interfaces, that is, the tetraphenylborate‐ion (TPB?)/water and tetraphenylarsonium‐ion (TPA+)/water interfaces, which are clarified by two‐dimensional heterodyne‐detected vibrational sum‐frequency generation (2D HD‐VSFG) spectroscopy. The obtained 2D HD‐VSFG spectra of the anionic TPB? interface reveal the existence of distinct π‐hydrogen bonded OH groups in addition to the usual hydrogen‐bonded OH groups, which are hidden in the steady‐state spectrum. In contrast, 2D HD‐VSFG spectra of the cationic TPA+ interface only show the presence of usual hydrogen‐bonded OH groups. The present study demonstrates that the sign of the interfacial charge governs the structure and dynamics of water molecules that face the hydrophobic region.  相似文献

Water interfaces provide the platform for many important biological, chemical, and physical processes. The water–air interface is the most common and simple aqueous interface and serves as a model system for water at a hydrophobic surface. Unveiling the microscopic (<1 nm) structure and dynamics of interfacial water at the water–vapor interface is essential for understanding the processes occurring on the water surface. At the water interface the network of very strong intermolecular interactions, hydrogen‐bonds, is interrupted and the density of water is reduced. A central question regarding water at interfaces is the extent to which the structure and dynamics of water molecules are influenced by the interruption of the hydrogen‐bonded network and thus differ from those of bulk water. Herein, we discuss recent advances in the study of interfacial water at the water–air interface using laser‐based surface‐specific vibrational spectroscopy.  相似文献

We studied the interaction of water in poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) of various vinyl acetate compositions and poly(vinyl acetate), on the basis of the infrared spectrum of the water dissolved therein. The spectrum shows a very sharp and distinct band at about 3690 cm?1 (named as A), and less‐sharp two bands around 3640 (B) and 3550 cm?1 (C), the A band being outstanding especially at a low vinyl acetate composition. As the vinyl acetate composition increases, the A band decreases in intensity relative to the C band, whereas the B band increases contrarily. Analysis of the spectral change has elucidated that one‐bonded water (of which one OH is hydrogen‐bonded to the C?O of an ester group and the other OH is free) and two‐bonded water (each OH of which is hydrogen‐bonded to one C?O) coexist in the copolymer and that two‐bonded water increases in relative population with increasing vinyl acetate composition. Dissolved water is entirely two‐bonded in poly(vinyl acetate), in which C?O groups are densely distributed in the matrix. We proved that dissolved water in polymers is hydrogen‐bonded through one or two OH groups to the possessed functional groups but does not cluster. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the photophysical properties of N‐methyl‐1,8‐naphthalimide ( 2 ) has been investigated by time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) method. The UV and IR spectra of 2 monomer and its hydrogen‐bonded complexes formed with 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol (TFE) 2 +TFE and 2 +2TFE have been calculated, which confirm the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the carbonyl groups of the aromatic imide and the hydroxyl group of the polyfluorinated alcohol. The absorption and fluorescence intensities going from 2 monomer via hydrogen‐bonded complex 2 +TFE to 2 +2TFE were found to be gradually enhanced with the wavelength gradually red‐shifted. The enhancements of the fluorescence intensities from 2 monomer to hydrogen‐bonded complexes 2 +TFE and 2 +2TFE were attributed to the decrease of the intersystem crossing (ISC) efficiency from the first excited singlet state S1 1(ππ*) to the second excited triplet state T2 3(nπ*), whose energy was increased relative to its ground state due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions.  相似文献

The geometric structures and infrared (IR) spectra in the electronically excited state of a novel doubly hydrogen‐bonded complex formed by fluorenone and alcohols, which has been observed by IR spectra in experimental study, are investigated by the time‐dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method. The geometric structures and IR spectra in both ground state and the S1 state of this doubly hydrogen‐bonded FN‐2MeOH complex are calculated using the DFT and TDDFT methods, respectively. Two intermolecular hydrogen bonds are formed between FN and methanol molecules in the doubly hydrogen‐bonded FN‐2MeOH complex. Moreover, the formation of the second intermolecular hydrogen bond can make the first intermolecular hydrogen bond become slightly weak. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the spectral shoulder at around 1700 cm?1 observed in the IR spectra should be assigned as the doubly hydrogen‐bonded FN‐2MeOH complex from our calculated results. The electronic excited‐state hydrogen bonding dynamics is also studied by monitoring some vibraitonal modes related to the formation of hydrogen bonds in different electronic states. As a result, both the two intermolecular hydrogen bonds are significantly strengthened in the S1 state of the doubly hydrogen‐bonded FN‐2MeOH complex. The hydrogen bond strengthening in the electronically excited state is similar to the previous study on the singly hydrogen‐bonded FN‐MeOH complex and play important role on the photophysics of fluorenone in solutions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To explore the anion‐recognition ability of the phenolic hydroxyl group and the amino hydrogen, we synthesized three different acridinedione (ADD) based anion receptors, 1 , 2 and 3 , having OH, NH, and combination of OH and NH groups, respectively. Absorption, emission and 1H NMR spectral studies revealed that receptor 1 , having only a phenolic OH group, shows selective deprotonation of the hydroxyl proton towards F?, which results in an “ON–OFF”‐type signal in the fluorescence spectral studies. Receptor 2 , which only has an amino hydrogen, also shows deprotonation of the amino hydrogen with F?, whereas receptor 3 (having both OH and NH groups) shows head‐to‐tail intermolecular hydrogen bonding of OH and NH groups with F? prior to deprotonation. The observation of hydrogen bonding of the OH and NH groups in a combined solution of 1 and 2 with F? in a head‐to‐tail hetero‐intermolecular fashion, and the absence of head‐to‐head and tail‐to‐tail intermolecular hydrogen bonding in 1 and 2 with F?, prove that the difference in the acidity of the OH and NH protons leads to the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding complex with F? prior to deprotonation. The presence of this hydrogen‐bonding complex was confirmed by absorption spectroscopy, 3D emission contour studies, and 1H NMR titration.  相似文献

Tripodal 1,3,5‐tris(phenoxymethyl)‐2,4,6‐triethylbenzene analogues have been synthesized and structurally characterized by IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy and HRMS, and additionally, the single crystal structures of compounds bearing ortho‐ ( 7 ), meta‐ ( 9 ) and para‐hydroxymethyl ( 11 ) functions have been determined by X‐ray diffraction analysis. The structural study revealed that compounds 7 , 9 , and 11 do not adopt the expected 1,3,5‐alternate conformation in the solid state. The packing diagrams of compounds 7 , 9 , and 11 revealed that six hydrophilic hydroxymethyl groups from six individual molecules ( 7 , 9 and 11 ) were arranged in close contact via intermolecular hydrogen‐bond interactions. For compounds 7 and 9 , the six hydroxyl groups formed a distorted hexagonal ring; however, formation of such a hexagonal ring was not clear in the case of compound 11 . Compounds 9 and 11 were found to form hydrophobic cavities via intermolecular hydrogen‐bond interactions in the solid state, and the cavities were occupied by two ethyl groups from the two cavity‐forming molecules.  相似文献

New Lennard‐Jones parameters have been developed to describe the interactions between atomistic model of graphene, represented by REBO potential, and five commonly used all‐atom water models, namely SPC, SPC/E, SPC/Fw, SPC/Fd, and TIP3P/Fs by employing particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. These new parameters were optimized to reproduce the macroscopic contact angle of water on a graphene sheet. The calculated line tension was in the order of 10−11 J/m for the droplets of all water models. Our molecular dynamics simulations indicate the preferential orientation of water molecules near graphene–water interface with one O H bond pointing toward the graphene surface. Detailed analysis of simulation trajectories reveals the presence of water molecules with ≤∼1, ∼2, and ∼4 hydrogen bonds at the surface of air–water interface, graphene–water interface, and bulk region of the water droplet, respectively. Presence of water molecules with ≤∼1 and ∼2 hydrogen bonds suggest the existence of water clusters of different sizes at these interfaces. The trends observed in the libration, bending, and stretching bands of the vibrational spectra are closely associated with these structural features of water. The inhomogeneity in hydrogen bond network of water at the air–water and graphene–water interface is manifested by broadening of the peaks in the libration band for water present at these interfaces. The stretching band for the molecules in water droplet shows a blue shift as compared to the pure bulk water, which conjecture the presence of weaker hydrogen bond network in a droplet. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We investigate the dynamics of water in contact with solid calcium fluoride, where at low pH, localized charges can develop upon fluorite dissolution. We use 2D surface‐specific vibrational spectroscopy to quantify the heterogeneity of the interfacial water (D2O) molecules and provide information about the sub‐picosecond vibrational‐energy‐relaxation dynamics at the buried solid/liquid interface. We find that strongly H‐bonded OD groups, with a vibrational frequency below 2500 cm?1, display very rapid spectral diffusion and vibrational relaxation; for weakly H‐bonded OD groups, above 2500 cm?1, the dynamics slows down substantially. Atomistic simulations based on electronic‐structure theory reveal the molecular origin of energy transport through the local H‐bond network. We conclude that strongly oriented H‐bonded water molecules in the adsorbed layer, whose orientation is pinned by the localized charge defects, can exchange vibrational energy very rapidly due to the strong collective dipole, compensating for a partially missing solvation shell.  相似文献

Phospholipids are studied by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in the mid‐ and far‐infrared spectral ranges, thereby establishing the hydrogen‐bonding continuum as a function of the temperature. The well‐known mid‐infrared spectrum of the phospholipid layer clearly shows a temperature‐dependent phase transition. In the far‐infrared region (from 300 to 50 cm?1), an alternation of the interaction between the phospholipids and water molecules is found. The hydrogen‐bonding network ensemble and bound water molecules can be monitored in this spectral region. The lipid structure is found to strongly influence the intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interplay. Thus, studies in the far‐infrared region provide significant information—at the molecular level—about the intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding signature of self‐assembled phospholipids.  相似文献

A nanoformulation composed of curdlan, a linear polysaccharide of 1,3‐β‐linked d ‐glucose units, hydrogen bonded to poly(γ ‐glutamic acid) (PGA), was developed to stimulate macrophage. Curdlan/PGA nanoparticles (C‐NP) are formulated by physically blending curdlan (0.2 mg mL?1 in 0.4 m NaOH) with PGA (0.8 mg mL?1). Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) analysis demonstrates a heterospecies interpolymer complex formed between curdlan and PGA. The 1H‐NMR spectra display significant peak broadening as well as downfield chemical shifts of the hydroxyl proton resonances of curdlan, indicating potential intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition, the cross peaks in 1H‐1H 2D‐NOESY suggest intermolecular associations between the OH‐2/OH‐4 hydroxyl groups of curdlan and the carboxylic‐/amide‐groups of PGA via hydrogen bonding. Intracellular uptake of C‐NP occurs over time in human monocyte‐derived macrophage (MDM). Furthermore, C‐NP nanoparticles dose‐dependently increase gene expression for TNF‐α, IL‐6, and IL‐8 at 24 h in MDM. C‐NP nanoparticles also stimulate the release of IL‐lβ, MCP‐1, TNF‐α, IL‐8, IL‐12p70, IL‐17, IL‐18, and IL‐23 from MDM. Overall, this is the first demonstration of a simplistic nanoformulation formed by hydrogen bonding between curdlan and PGA that modulates cytokine gene expression and release of cytokines from MDM.  相似文献

Interfacial water in the vicinity of lipids plays an important role in many biological processes, such as drug delivery, ion transportation, and lipid fusion. Hence, molecular‐level elucidation of the properties of water at lipid interfaces is of the utmost importance. We report the two‐dimensional heterodyne‐detected vibrational sum frequency generation (2D HD‐VSFG) study of the OH stretch of HOD at charged lipid interfaces, which shows that the hydrogen bond dynamics of interfacial water differ drastically, depending on the lipids. The data indicate that the spectral diffusion of the OH stretch at a positively charged lipid interface is dominated by the ultrafast (<~100 fs) component, followed by the minor sub‐picosecond slow dynamics, while the dynamics at a negatively charged lipid interface exhibit sub‐picosecond dynamics almost exclusively, implying that fast hydrogen bond fluctuation is prohibited. These results reveal that the ultrafast hydrogen bond dynamics at the positively charged lipid–water interface are attributable to the bulk‐like property of interfacial water, whereas the slow dynamics at the negatively charged lipid interface are due to bound water, which is hydrogen‐bonded to the hydrophilic head group.  相似文献

Chiral amino acid‐ and amino alcohol‐oxalamides are well‐known as versatile and efficient gelators of various lipophilic and polar organic solvents and water. To further explore the capacity of the amino acid/oxalamide structural fragment as a gelation‐generating motif, the dioxalamide dimethyl esters 16Me and 19Me , and dicarboxylic acid 26OH / 29OH derivatives containing flexible methylene bridges with odd ( 9 ; n=7) and even ( 6 ; n=4) numbers of methylene groups were prepared. Their self‐assembly motifs and gelation properties were studied by using a number of methods (FTIR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, CD, TEM, DSC, XRPD, molecular modeling, MMFF94, and DFT). In contrast to the previously studied chiral bis(amino acid or amino alcohol) oxalamide gelators, in which no chiral morphology was ever observed in the gels, the conformationally more flexible 16Me , 19Me , 26OH , and 29OH provide gelators that are capable of forming diverse aggregates of achiral and chiral morphologies, such as helical fibers, twisted tapes, nanotubules, straight fibers, and tapes, in some cases coexisting in the same gel sample. It is shown that the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)‐determined gelation enthalpies could not be correlated with gelator and solvent clogP values. Spectroscopic results show that intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding between the oxalamide units provides the major and self‐assembly directing intermolecular interaction in the aggregates. Molecular modeling studies reveal that molecular flexibility of gelators due to the presence of the polymethylene bridges gives three conformations ( zz , p1 , and p2 ) close in energy, which could form oxalamide hydrogen‐bonded layers. The aggregates of the p1 and p2 conformations tend to twist due to steric repulsion between neighboring iBu groups at chiral centers. The X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD) results of 16Me and 19Me xerogels prove the formation of p1 and p2 gel aggregates, respectively. The latter results explain the formation of gel aggregates with chiral morphology and also the simultaneous presence of aggregates of diverse morphology in the same gel system.  相似文献

The sotagliflozin molecule exhibits two fundamentally different molecular conformations in form 1 {systematic name: (2S ,3R ,4R ,5S ,6R )‐2‐[4‐chloro‐3‐(4‐ethoxybenzyl)phenyl]‐6‐(methylsulfanyl)tetrahydro‐2H‐pyran‐3,4,5‐triol, C21H25ClO5S, (I)} and the monohydrate [C21H25ClO5S·H2O, (II)]. Both crystals display hydrogen‐bonded layers formed by intermolecular interactions which involve the three –OH groups of the xyloside fragment of the molecule. The layer architectures of (I) and (II) contain a non‐hydrogen‐bonded molecule–molecule interaction along the short crystallographic axis (a axis) whose total PIXEL energy exceeds that of each hydrogen‐bonded molecule–molecule pair. The hydrogen‐bonded layer of (I) has the topology of the 4‐connected sql net and that formed by the water and sotagliflozin molecules of (II) has the topology of a 3,7‐connected net.  相似文献

The structures of 4‐nitrobenzene‐1,2‐diamine [C6H7N3O2, (I)], 2‐amino‐5‐nitroanilinium chloride [C6H8N3O2+·Cl, (II)] and 2‐amino‐5‐nitroanilinium bromide monohydrate [C6H8N3O2+·Br·H2O, (III)] are reported and their hydrogen‐bonded structures described. The amine group para to the nitro group in (I) adopts an approximately planar geometry, whereas the meta amine group is decidedly pyramidal. In the hydrogen halide salts (II) and (III), the amine group meta to the nitro group is protonated. Compound (I) displays a pleated‐sheet hydrogen‐bonded two‐dimensional structure with R22(14) and R44(20) rings. The sheets are joined by additional hydrogen bonds, resulting in a three‐dimensional extended structure. Hydrohalide salt (II) has two formula units in the asymmetric unit that are related by a pseudo‐inversion center. The dominant hydrogen‐bonding interactions involve the chloride ion and result in R42(8) rings linked to form a ladder‐chain structure. The chains are joined by N—H...Cl and N—H...O hydrogen bonds to form sheets parallel to (010). In hydrated hydrohalide salt (III), bromide ions are hydrogen bonded to amine and ammonium groups to form R42(8) rings. The water behaves as a double donor/single acceptor and, along with the bromide anions, forms hydrogen bonds involving the nitro, amine, and ammonium groups. The result is sheets parallel to (001) composed of alternating R55(15) and R64(24) rings. Ammonium N—H...Br interactions join the sheets to form a three‐dimensional extended structure. Energy‐minimized structures obtained using DFT and MP2 calculations are consistent with the solid‐state structures. Consistent with (II) and (III), calculations show that protonation of the amine group meta to the nitro group results in a structure that is about 1.5 kJ mol−1 more stable than that obtained by protonation of the para‐amine group. DFT calculations on single molecules and hydrogen‐bonded pairs of molecules based on structural results obtained for (I) and for 3‐nitrobenzene‐1,2‐diamine, (IV) [Betz & Gerber (2011). Acta Cryst. E 67 , o1359] were used to estimate the strength of the N—H...O(nitro) interactions for three observed motifs. The hydrogen‐bonding interaction between the pairs of molecules examined was found to correspond to 20–30 kJ mol−1.  相似文献

Poly‐pyridobisimiazole (M5) single filaments subjected to varying degrees of heat treatment have been analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy in transmission mode to detect changes in the state of intermolecular hydrogen bonding as a function of fiber annealing conditions. The FTIR absorbance bands associated with hydrogen bonding in M5 fiber have been identified, and the integrated molar absorption coefficients for the bands of interest have been determined experimentally, which allows to quantify the concentration of N? H vibration groups hydrogen‐bonded (H‐bonded) to water molecules, and the concentration of N? H vibration groups H‐bonded to adjacent polymer chains in the fiber. A dual mechanism kinetic rate expression is used to describe intermolecular H‐bond formation in M5 fiber as a function of annealing conditions, from which an activation energy for H‐bond formation of 14.8 kJ/mol is obtained. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the title monohydrated cocrystal, namely 1,3‐diamino‐5‐azaniumyl‐1,3,5‐trideoxy‐cis‐inositol iodide–1,3,5‐triamino‐1,3,5‐trideoxy‐cis‐inositol–water (1/1/1), C6H16N3O3+·I·C6H15N3O3·H2O, the neutral 1,3,5‐triamino‐1,3,5‐trideoxy‐cis‐inositol (taci) molecule and the monoprotonated 1,3‐diamino‐5‐azaniumyl‐1,3,5‐trideoxy‐cis‐inositol cation (Htaci+) both adopt a chair conformation, with the three O atoms in axial and the three N atoms in equatorial positions. The cation, but not the neutral taci unit, exhibits intramolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonding. The entire structure is stabilized by a complex three‐dimensional network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The neutral taci entities and the Htaci+ cations are each aligned into chains along [001]. In these chains, two O—H...N interactions generate a ten‐membered ring as the predominant structural motif. The rings consist of vicinal 2‐amino‐1‐hydroxyethylene units of neighbouring molecules, which are paired via centres of inversion. The chains are interconnected into undulating layers parallel to the ac plane, and the layers are further held together by O—H...N hydrogen bonds and additional interactions with the iodide counter‐anions and solvent water molecules.  相似文献

The structure of the title compound, C18H22O2, contains two non‐equivalent molecules which differ primarily in the location of the –OH groups on opposite sides or on the same side of the molecular plane. Inversion‐symmetric pairs of molecules form intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen‐bonded tetrameric synthons that link non‐equivalent molecules into an approximately square double layer parallel to (02). Recently reported fluorinated analogues [Kane, Meyers, Yu, Gerken & Etzkorn (2011). Eur. J. Org. Chem. pp. 2969–2980] have significantly different structures of varying complexity that incorporate intramolecular hydrogen bonding and suggest that further study of structure versus substituents in vicinal dialkynols could be fruitful.  相似文献

The protein bacteriorhodopsin pumps protons across a bacterial membrane; its pumping cycle is triggered by the photoisomerization of a retinal cofactor and involves multiple proton‐transfer reactions between intermittent protonation sites. These transfers are either direct or mediated by hydrogen‐bonded networks, which may include internal water molecules. The terminal step of the proton‐transfer sequence is the proton release from a pocket near Glu194 and Glu204 to the extracellular bulk during the transition from the L to the M photointermediate states. The polar and charged side chains connecting these two regions in the crystal structures show no structural changes between the initial bR state and the L/M states, and no intermittent protonation changes have been detected so far in this region. Based on biomolecular simulations, we propose two potential proton‐release channels, which connect the release pocket to the extracellular medium. In simulations of the L photointermediate we observe bulk water entering these channels and forming transient hydrogen‐bonded networks, which could serve as fast deprotonation pathways from the release pocket to the bulk via a Grotthuss mechanism. For the first channel, we find that the triple Arg7, Glu9, and Tyr79 acts as a valve, thereby gating water uptake and release. The second channel has two release paths, which split at the position Asn76/Pro77 underneath the release group. Here, water molecules either exchange directly with the bulk or diffuse within the protein towards Arg 134/Lys129, where the exchange with the bulk occurs.  相似文献

The carboxylic acid group is an example of a functional group which possess a good hydrogen‐bond donor (–OH) and acceptor (C=O). For this reason, carboxylic acids have a tendency to self‐assembly by the formation of hydrogen bonds between the donor and acceptor sites. We present here the crystal structure of N‐tosyl‐l ‐proline (TPOH) benzene hemisolvate {systematic name: (2S)‐1‐[(4‐methylbenzene)sulfonyl]pyrrolidine‐2‐carboxylic acid benzene hemisolvate}, C12H15NO4S·0.5C6H6, (I), in which a cyclic R22(8) hydrogen‐bonded carboxylic acid dimer with a strong O—(H)…(H)—O hydrogen bond is observed. The compound was characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy, and crystallizes in the space group I2 with half a benzene molecule and one TPOH molecule in the asymmetric unit. The H atom of the carboxyl OH group is disordered over a twofold axis. An analysis of the intermolecular interactions using the noncovalent interaction (NCI) index showed that the TPOH molecules form dimers due to the strong O—(H)…(H)—O hydrogen bond, while the packing of the benzene solvent molecules is governed by weak dispersive interactions. A search of the Cambridge Structural Database revealed that the disordered dimeric motif observed in (I) was found previously only in six crystal structures.  相似文献
