Electronic couplings are crucial for understanding exciton dynamics and associated energy transfer in artificial and natural chromophores. The proposed PyFREC (Python FRagment Electronic Coupling) software enables evaluation of electronic couplings based on the Förster model. PyFREC features the decomposition of electronic couplings, obtained through quantum chemical calculations, into the orientation and dipole strength components. Furthermore, the variation method to evaluate energies of coupled electronic excited states and delocalization of electronic excitations is implemented in the software. PyFREC has been tested on the S22 benchmark dataset of non‐covalent complexes and water clusters. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Ternary organic photovoltaics(OPVs) are fabricated with PBDB-T-2 Cl:Y6(1:1.2, wt/wt) as the host system and extra PC_(71)BM as the third component. The PBDB-T-2 Cl:Y6 based binary OPVs exhibit a power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 15.49% with a short circuit current(J_(SC)) of 24.98 m A cm~(-2), an open circuit voltage(V_(OC)) of 0.868 V and a fill factor(FF) of 71.42%. A 16.71%PCE is obtained in the optimized ternary OPVs with PBDB-T-2 Cl:Y6:PC_(71)BM(1:1.2:0.2, wt/wt) active layer, resulting from the synchronously improved J_(SC) of 25.44 m A cm~(-2), FF of 75.66% and the constant V_(OC)of 0.868 V. The incorporated PC_(71)BM may prefer to mix with Y6 to finely adjust phase separation, domain size and molecular arrangement in ternary active layers, which can be confirmed from the characterization on morphology, 2 D grazing incidence small and wide-angle X-ray scattering, as well as Raman mapping. In addition, PC_(71)BM may prefer to mix with Y6 to form efficient electron transport channels, which should be conducive to charge transport and collection in the optimized ternary OPVs. This work provides more insight into the underlying reasons of the third component on performance improvement of ternary OPVs, indicating ternary strategy should be an efficient method to optimize active layers for synchronously improving photon harvesting, exciton dissociation and charge transport, while keeping the simple cell fabrication technology.  相似文献

A general dynamic Monte Carlo model for exciton dissociation at a donor-acceptor interface that includes exciton delocalization and hot charge separation is developed to model the experimental behavior observed for the poly(3-hexylthiophene):fullerene system and predict the theoretical performance of future materials systems. The presence of delocalized excitons and the direct formation of separated charge pairs has been recently measured by transient photo-induced absorption experiments and has been proposed to facilitate charge separation. The excess energy of the exciton dissociation process has also been observed to have a strong correlation with the charge separation yield for a series of thiophene based polymer:fullerene systems, suggesting that a hot charge separation process is also occurring. Hot charge separation has been previously theorized as a cause for highly efficient charge separation. However, a detailed model for this process has not been implemented and tested. Here, both conceptual models are implemented into a dynamic Monte Carlo simulation and tested using a simple bilayer donor-acceptor system. We find that exciton delocalization can account for a significant reduction in geminate recombination when compared to the traditional, bound polaron pair model. In addition, the hot charge separation process could further reduce the geminate recombination, but only if the hot charge mobility is several orders of magnitude larger than the standard charge mobility.  相似文献

Excited‐state dynamic planarization processes play a crucial role in determining exciton size in cyclic systems, as reported for π‐conjugated linear oligomers. Herein, we report time‐resolved fluorescence spectra and molecular dynamics simulations of π‐conjugated cyclic oligothiophenes in which the number of subunits was chosen to show the size‐dependent dynamic planarization in the vicinity of a ring‐to‐linear behavioral turning point. Analyses on the evolution of the total fluorescence intensity and the ratio between 0–1 to 0–0 vibronic bands suggest that excitons formed in a cyclic oligothiophene composed of six subunits fully delocalize over the cyclic carbon backbone, whereas those formed in larger systems fail to achieve complete delocalization. With the aid of molecular dynamics simulations, it is shown that distorted structures unfavorable for efficient exciton delocalization are more easily populated as the size of the cyclic system increases.  相似文献

The combination of nonadiabatic Ehrenfest‐path molecular dynamics (EMD) based on time‐dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and quantum optimal control formalism (QOCT) was used to optimize the shape of ultra‐short laser pulses to achieve photodissociation of a hydrogen molecule and the trihydrogen cation H3+. This work completes a previous one [A. Castro, ChemPhysChem, 2013 , 14, 1488–1495], in which the same objective was achieved by demonstrating the combination of QOCT and TDDFT for many‐electron systems on static nuclear potentials. The optimization model, therefore, did not include the nuclear movement and the obtained dissociation mechanism could only be sequential: fast laser‐assisted electronic excitation to nonbonding states (during which the nuclei are considered to be static), followed by field‐free dissociation. Here, in contrast, the optimization was performed with the QOCT constructed on top of the full dynamic model comprised of both electrons and nuclei, as described within EMD based on TDDFT. This is the first numerical demonstration of an optimal control formalism for a hybrid quantum–classical model, that is, a molecular dynamics method.  相似文献

To deepen the understanding of morphology evolution in bulk heterojunction P3HT:PCBM organic photovoltaics system by thermal treatment, domain‐size‐dependent interfacial energies were first determined by coarse‐grained molecular dynamics modelling and then used in Monte Carlo simulations of the morphology evolution. Thereby initial conditions associated with optimal interfacial surface area, continuous volume, as well as domain sizes, and spatial distributions of the phase separated domains were identified. In line with earlier studies, a 1:1 P3HT:PCBM blend ratio is found to exhibit the most efficient morphology for exciton dissociation and charge transport. Our simulations reveal that preseeding of P3HT crystal at the anode side prior to the annealing process will be instrumental to pin the formation of P3HT at the favorable electrode especially when seeding exceeds a threshold of 10% surface coverage, whereas denser seeding patterns beyond the threshold did not improve the active layer morphology further. The observed trilayer depth profile (in the absence of preseeded P3HT crystals) implies that the commonly used thickness 100 nm of the active layer is not ideal for ensuring that donor and acceptor phases dominate at opposite ends of the active layer. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Energy transport mechanisms in R-Phycoerythrin (RPE), a light harvesting protein located at the top of the phycobilisome antenna in red algae, are investigated using nonlinear optical spectroscopies and theoretical models. The RPE hexamer possesses a total of 30 bilin pigments, which can be subdivided into three classes based on their molecular structures and electronic resonance frequencies. Of particular interest to this study is the influence of exciton delocalization on the real-space paths traversed by photoexcitations as they concentrate on the lowest energy pigment sites. Transient grating measurements show that significant nuclear relaxation occurs at delay times less than 100 fs, whereas energy transport spans a wide range of time scales depending on the proximity of the initial and final states involved in the process. The fastest energy transport dynamics within the RPE complex are close to 1 ps; however, evidence for sub-100 fs exciton self-trapping is also obtained. In addition, photon echo experiments reveal vibronic interactions with overdamped and underdamped nuclear modes. To establish signatures of exciton delocalization, energy transport is simulated using both modified Redfield and Fo?rster theories, which respectively employ delocalized and localized basis states. We conclude that exciton delocalization occurs between six pairs of phycoerythrobilin pigments (i.e., dimers) within the protein hexamer. It is interesting that these dimers are bound in locations analogous to the well-studied phycocyanobilin dimers of cyanobacterial allophycocyanin and c-phycocyanin in which wave function delocalization is also known to take hold. Strong conclusions regarding the electronic structures of the remaining pigments cannot be drawn based on the present experiments and simulations due to overlapping resonances and broad spectroscopic line widths, which prevent the resolution of dynamics at particular pigment sites.  相似文献

Exciton and charge delocalization across π‐stacked assemblies is of importance in biological systems and functional polymeric materials. To examine the requirements for exciton and hole stabilization, cofacial bifluorene ( F 2) torsionomers were designed, synthesized, and characterized: unhindered (model) Me F 2, sterically hindered tBu F 2, and cyclophane‐like C F 2, where fluorenes are locked in a perfect sandwich orientation via two methylene linkers. This set of bichromophores with varied torsional rigidity and orbital overlap shows that exciton stabilization requires a perfect sandwich‐like arrangement, as seen by strong excimeric‐like emission only in C F 2 and Me F 2. In contrast, hole delocalization is less geometrically restrictive and occurs even in sterically hindered tBu F 2, as judged by 160 mV hole stabilization and a near‐IR band in the spectrum of its cation radical. These findings underscore the diverse requirements for charge and energy delocalization across π‐stacked assemblies.  相似文献

The spectroscopy of solid anthracene is examined both experimentally and theoretically. To avoid experimental complications such as self-absorption and polariton effects, ultrathin polycrystalline films deposited on transparent substrates are studied. To separate the contributions from different emitting species, the emission is resolved in both time and wavelength. The spectroscopic data are interpreted in terms of a three-state kinetic model, where two excited states, a high energy state 1 and a low energy state 2, both contribute to the luminescence and are kinetically coupled. Using this model, we analyze the spectral lineshape, relative quantum yield, and relaxation rates as a function of temperature. For state 1, we find that the ratio of the 0-0 vibronic peak to the 0-1 peak is enhanced by roughly a factor of 3.5 at low temperature, while the quantum yield and decay rates also increase by a similar factor. These observations are explained using a theoretical model previously developed for herringbone polyacene crystals. The early-time emission lineshape is consistent with that expected for a linear aggregate corresponding to an edge-dislocation defect. The results of experiment and theory are quantitatively compared at different temperatures in order to estimate that the singlet exciton in our polycrystalline films is delocalized over about ten molecules. Within these domains, the exciton's coherence length steadily increases as the temperature drops, until it reaches the limits of the domain, whereupon it saturates and remains constant as the temperature is lowered further. While the theoretical modeling correctly reproduces the temperature dependence of the fluorescence spectral lineshape, the decay of the singlet exciton appears to be determined by a trapping process that becomes more rapid as the temperature is lowered. This more rapid decay is consistent with accelerated trapping due to increased delocalization of the exciton at lower temperatures. These observations suggest that exciton coherence can play an important role in both radiative and nonradiative decay channels in these materials. Our results show that the spectroscopy of polyacene solids can be analyzed in a self-consistent fashion to obtain information about electronic delocalization and domain sizes.  相似文献

Riboswitch‐mediated control of gene expression depends on ligand binding properties (kinetics and affinity) of its aptamer domain. A detailed analysis of interior regions of the aptamer, which affect the ligand binding properties, is important for both understanding natural riboswitch functions and for enabling rational design of tuneable artificial riboswitches. Kinetic analyses of binding reaction between flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and several natural and mutant aptamer domains of FMN‐specific riboswitches were performed. The strong dependence of the dissociation rate (52.6‐fold) and affinity (100‐fold) on the identities of base pairs in the aptamer stem suggested that the stem region, which is conserved in length but variable in base‐pair composition and context, is the tuning region of the FMN‐specific aptamer. Synthetic riboswitches were constructed based on the same aptamer domain by rationally modifying the tuning regions. The observed 9.31‐fold difference in the half‐maximal effective concentration (EC50) corresponded to a 11.6‐fold difference in the dissociation constant (KD) of the aptamer domains and suggested that the gene expression can be controlled by rationally adjusting the tuning regions.  相似文献

A unique ability of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) is the generation and accommodation of multiple excitons through either optical or electric current pumping. The development and improvement of NC-based optoelectronic devices that utilize multiple excitons requires the understanding of multiple exciton dynamics and their efficient conversion to emitted photons or external charges prior to exciton-exciton annihilation. Here, we demonstrate that significantly enhanced multiexciton dissociation efficiency can be achieved in CdSe quantum rods (QRs) compared to CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we reveal the formation of bound one-dimensional exciton states in CdSe QRs and that multiple exciton Auger recombination occurs primarily via exciton-exciton collision. Furthermore, quantum confinement in the QR radial direction facilitates ultrafast exciton dissociation by interfacial electron transfer to adsorbed acceptors. Under high excitation intensity, more than 21 electrons can be transferred from one CdSe QR to adsorbed methylviologen molecules, greatly exceeding the multiexciton dissociation efficiency of CdSe QDs.  相似文献

The electronic structure and size-scaling of optoelectronic properties in cycloparaphenylene carbon nanorings are investigated using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The TDDFT calculations on these molecular nanostructures indicate that the lowest excitation energy surprisingly becomes larger as the carbon nanoring size is increased, in contradiction with typical quantum confinement effects. In order to understand their unusual electronic properties, I performed an extensive investigation of excitonic effects by analyzing electron-hole transition density matrices and exciton binding energies as a function of size in these nanoring systems. The transition density matrices allow a global view of electronic coherence during an electronic excitation, and the exciton binding energies give a quantitative measure of electron-hole interaction energies in the nanorings. Based on overall trends in exciton binding energies and their spatial delocalization, I find that excitonic effects play a vital role in understanding the unique photoinduced dynamics in these carbon nanoring systems.  相似文献

In order to understand exciton migration and fluorescence intensity fluctuation mechanisms in conjugated polymer single molecules, we studied fluorescence decay dynamics at "on" and "off" fluorescence intensity levels with 20 ps time resolution using MEH-PPV [poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] dispersed in PMMA. Two types of intensity fluctuations were distinguished for single chains of conjugated polymers. Abrupt intensity fluctuations (blinking) were found to be always accompanied by corresponding changes in fluorescence lifetime. On the contrary, during "smooth" intensity fluctuations no lifetime change was observed. Time-resolved data in combination with data on fluorescence emission and excitation anisotropy lead to a picture where a single polymer molecule is seen as consisting of several energy transfer domains. Exciton migration is efficient within a domain and not efficient between domains. Each domain can have several emitting low-energy sites over which the exciton continuously migrates until it decays. Emission of individual domains is often highly polarized. Fluorescence from a domain can be strongly quenched by Forster energy transfer to a quencher (hole polaron) if the domain overlaps with the quenching sphere.  相似文献

We report CH/π hydrogen‐bond‐driven self‐assembly in π‐conjugated skeletons based on oligophenylenevinylenes (OPVs) and trace the origin of interactions at the molecular level by using single‐crystal structures. OPVs were designed with appropriate pendants in the aromatic core and varied by hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon tails along the molecular axis. The roles of aromatic π‐stack, van der Waals forces, fluorophobic effect and CH/π interactions were investigated on the theromotropic liquid crystallinity of OPV molecules. Single‐crystal structures of hydrocarbon OPVs provided direct evidence for the existence of CH/π interactions between the π‐ring (H‐bond acceptor) and alkyl C? H (H‐bond donor). The four important crystallographic parameters, dc?x=3.79 Å, θ=21.49°, φ=150.25° and dHp?x=0.73 Å, matched in accordance with typical CH/π interactions. The CH/π interactions facilitate the close‐packing of mesogens in xy planes, which were further protruded along the c axis producing a lamellar structure. In the absence of CH/π interactions, van der Waals interactions drove the assembly towards a Schlieren nematic texture. Fluorocarbon OPVs exhibited smectic liquid‐crystalline textures that further underwent Smectic A (SmA) to Smectic C (SmC) phase transitions with shrinkage up to 11 %. The orientation and translational ordering of mesogens in the liquid‐crystalline (LC) phases induced H‐ and J‐type molecular arrangements in fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon OPVs, respectively. Upon photoexcitation, the H‐ and J‐type molecular arrangements were found to emit a blue or yellowish/green colour. Time‐resolved fluorescence decay measurements confirmed longer lifetimes for H‐type smectic OPVs relative to that of loosely packed one‐dimensional nematic hydrocarbon‐tailed OPVs.  相似文献

An easily dispersible multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) derivative is prepared, and provides a platform for the synthesis of the phenyl butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) analog. The carbene addition reaction of MWCNTs makes derivatives that are less soluble in organic solvents; by exploiting this differential solubility, PCBM analogs can be separated from the unreacted functionalized MWCNTs. Our experimental evidences indicate that it is the unique properties of the butyric acid methyl ester moiety that makes the acceptor material perform better in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Studying the combination of the butyric acid methyl ester moiety and the deagglomerated functionalized MWCNT structures provides us an insight into nanoscale charge transfer and transportation inside the donor–acceptor domain. It is demonstrated that a strong structure–property relationship exists for the functionalized MWCNTs, which enables us to correlate the functionality on the carbon nanostructures with performance in OPVs.  相似文献

Our research group has recently defined two new aromaticity indexes based on the analysis of electron delocalization in aromatic species using the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules. One of these indexes is the para-delocalization index (PDI) that measures the electronic delocalization between para-related carbon atoms in six-membered rings. In this paper, we show that this index can be partitioned into individual molecular orbital contributions. We have applied this PDI decomposition to several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons showing that this partitioning provides new insight into the origin of aromaticity.  相似文献

Upon photon absorption, π‐conjugated organics are apt to undergo ultrafast structural reorganization via electron‐vibrational coupling during non‐adiabatic transitions. Ultrafast nuclear motions modulate local planarity and quinoid/benzenoid characters within conjugated backbones, which control primary events in the excited states, such as localization, energy transfer, and so on. Femtosecond broadband fluorescence upconversion measurements were conducted to investigate exciton self‐trapping and delocalization in cycloparaphenylenes as ultrafast structural reorganizations are achieved via excited‐state symmetry‐dependent electron‐vibrational coupling. By accessing two high‐lying excited states, one‐photon and two‐photon allowed states, a clear discrepancy in the initial time‐resolved fluorescence spectra and the temporal dynamics/spectral evolution of fluorescence spectra were monitored. Combined with quantum chemical calculations, a novel insight into the effect of the excited‐state symmetry on ultrafast structural reorganization and exciton self‐trapping in the emerging class of π‐conjugated materials is provided.  相似文献

Poly(3‐alkylthiophene) (P3AT) has been a central focus of research on organic photovoltaics (OPVs) for well over a decade. Due to their controlled synthesis P3ATs have proven to be a vital model system for developing an understanding of the effects of polymer structure on optoelectronic properties and blend morphology in bulk heterojunction OPVs. Similar to their thiophene counterparts, selenophene and tellurophene can be polymerized in a controlled manner. As single atom substitution results in significant differences in absorption, charge transport and self‐assembly these model systems provide a unique opportunity to probe fundamental structure‐property relationships. In this account, we provide an overview of our work on copolymers of thiophene and selenophene and examine how the optoelectronic and morphological behavior of these materials can be strategically adjusted through polymer design. We also highlight recent developments on poly(3‐alkyltellurophene) and comment on its future in fundamental and applied studies.  相似文献

Bilirubin is a breakdown product from heme catabolism, and reduced excretion of bilirubin can lead to jaundice. Phototherapy is the most common treatment for neonatal jaundice, a condition frequently encountered in newborn infants. Knowledge of the photochemistry of bilirubin, which is dominated by (ultra)fast components, is necessary for the profound understanding of the processes in phototherapy. Here, we report results from femtosecond fluorescence upconversion measurements on bilirubin and half-bilirubin model compounds, as well as pump-probe absorption measurements on bilirubin. A fast component of ca. 120 fs in the multiexponential fluorescence decay, being only visible in the bilirubin molecule, is interpreted as exciton localization within the molecular halves. The slower components of several hundreds of femtoseconds and a few picoseconds, occurring in bilirubin and the half-bilirubin model, are interpreted as relaxation to a (twisted) intermediate, which decays further with ca. 15 ps to the ground state.  相似文献

We show that optical two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy can recover ultrafast heterogeneous dynamics of closely spaced delocalized exciton states from a molecular exciton manifold characterized by a single absorption band. The complete experimental third-order nonlinear optical response from room-temperature J-aggregates in liquid phase is reproduced for the first time with self-consistent Frenkel exciton theory combined with modified Redfield theory. We show that exciton relaxation between the exciton states and nuclear-motion-induced exchange-narrowed energy fluctuations of individual delocalized exciton states can be distinguished because these two processes lead to a distinctively different evolution of the absolute 2D spectrum. Our technique also allows recovery of the variation of the exciton relaxation rates as well as the degree of exciton delocalization across the absorption band.  相似文献
