Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient voltage decay measurements are applied to compare the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using organic electrolytes, ionic liquids and organic‐hole conductors as hole transport materials (HTM). Nano‐crystalline titania films sensitized by the same heteroleptic ruthenium complex NaRu(4‐carboxylic acid‐4′‐carboxylate) (4,4′‐dinonyl‐2,2′‐bipyridyl)(NCS)2 , coded Z‐907Na are employed as working electrodes. The influence of the nature of the HTM on the photovoltaic figures of merit, that is, the open circuit voltage, short circuit photocurrent and fill factor is evaluated. In order to derive the electron lifetime, as well as the electron diffusion coefficient and charge collection efficiency, EIS measurements are performed in the dark and under illumination corresponding to realistic photovoltaic operating conditions of these mesoscopic solar cells. A theoretical model is established to interpret the frequency response off the impedance under open circuit conditions, which is conceptually similar to photovoltage transient decay measurements. Important information on factors that govern the dynamics of electron transport within the nanocrystalline TiO2 film and charge recombination across the dye sensitized heterojunction is obtained.  相似文献

Seven SGT organics dyes, containing bis‐dimethylfluoreneyl amino groups with a dialkoxyphenyl unit as an electron donor and a cyanoacrylic acid group as an anchoring group, connected with oligothiophenes, fused thiophenes and benzothiadiazoles as π‐bridges, were designed and synthesised for applications in dye‐sensitised solar cells (DSSCs). The photovoltaic performance of DSSCs based on organic dyes with oligothiophenes depends on the molecular structure of the dyes, in terms of the length change of the π‐bridging units. The best performance was found with a π‐bridge length of about 6 Å. To further enhance the photovoltaic performance associated with this concept, cyclopenta[1,2‐b:5,4‐b′]dithiophene (CPDT) and benzothiadiazole were introduced into the π‐bridge unit. As a result, the DSSC based on the organic dye containing the CPDT moiety showed the best photovoltaic performance with a short‐circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) of 14.1 mA cm?2, an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.84 V and a fill factor (FF) of 0.72, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency (η) of 8.61 % under standard AM 1.5 irradiation.  相似文献

Two organic dyes XS51 and XS52 derivated from triarylamine and indoline are synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) employing cobalt and iodine redox shuttles. The effects of dye structure upon the photophysical, electro-chemical characteristics and cell performance are investigated. XS51 with four hexyloxyl groups on triarylamine performs better steric hindrance and an improvement of photovoltage. XS52 provides higher short-circuit photocurrent density due to the strong electron-donating capability of indoline unit. The results from the redox electrolyte on cell performances indicate that the synthesized dyes are more suitable for tris(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(II/III) redox couple than I?/I3? redox couple in assembling DSCs. Application of XS52 in the cobalt electrolyte yields a DSC with an overall power conversion efficiency of 6.58% under AM 1.5 (100 mW/cm2) irradiation.  相似文献

The dehydroxylation and rehydroxylation properties of titania (Degussa P-25) were investigated. FTIR and TPD-MS data indicate that hydroxyl groups are not completely removed at 500 °C in vacuo, and rehydration/rehydroxylation occur under helium (water content < 1 ppm) flow at room temperature. In addition, repeating dehydroxylation/rehydroxylation treatments for ten times does not significantly modify the dehydroxylation/rehydroxylation property of titania surface. Desorption of hydrogen from titania was observed at 535 °C after titania was reduced above 400 °C. The maximum surface density of hydrogen was determined to be 0.75 H atom/nm2. TPD data show four types of hydrogen on 3% titania supported cobalt catalysts: hydrogen adsorbed on cobalt metal (desorption temperature around 100 °C), reverse spillover hydro gen (150-250 °C), hydrogen from H-TiO2-x- Co interacting species (-330 °C), and recombined hydrogen from Ti3+-H on titania (-535 °C). The absence of hydrogen desorption peak at 535 °C for titania supported cobalt reduced above 400 °C can be explained in terms of the migration of H-TiO2-x moieties onto cobalt metal surface during reduction. Removal of hydroxyl groups by thermal treatment before reduction enhanced the amount of hydrogen desorption from normal cobalt surface. This indicates that the hydroxyl groups play a role in the surface migration of H-Ti2-x.  相似文献

An improvement in the photodegradation performance for dyes due to interaction between carbon and titania in a self‐assembled mesoporous C? TiO2 composite catalyst, even for the difficult degradation of azo dyes, is reported herein. The dye removal process involves adsorption of the dye from water by the mesoporous carbon–titania, followed by photodegradation on the separated dye‐loaded solid. Such adsorption–catalysis cycles can be carried out more than 80 times without discernible loss of photocatalytic activity or the anatase content of the composite. In each run, about 120 mg dye per g catalyst can be degraded. The mesoporous carbon–titania catalyst also exhibits a high capacity for converting methyl orange in aqueous solution under visible light. Characterization by XRD, TEM, and N2 sorption techniques has revealed that the self‐assembled composite catalyst has an ordered mesostructure, uniform mesopores (4.3 nm), a large pore volume (0.30 cm3 g?1), and a high surface area (348 m2 g?1). The pore walls are composed of amorphous carbon and anatase nanoparticles of size 4.2 nm, which are well dispersed and confined. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS), and UV/Vis absorption results indicate doping of carbon into the anatase lattice and a change in the bandgap of the semiconductor. The synergistic improvement in the composite catalyst can be attributed to the following features: (1) carbon doping of the anatase lattice modifies its bandgap and enhances its activity under visible light; (2) confinement within carbon pore walls prevents aggregation of tiny anatase nanoparticles, improving their activity and stability; (3) the mesopores provide a confined space for photocatalysis; and (4) the strong adsorption ability of porous carbon for organic substances ensures that large quantities can be processed and inhibits further diffusion of the adsorbed organic substances, thereby enhancing the mineralization on anatase.  相似文献

Structurally thermostable mesoporous anatase TiO2 (m‐TiO2) nanoparticles, uniquely decorated with atomically dispersed SiO2, is reported for the first time. The inorganic Si portion of the novel organosilane template, used as a mesopores‐directing agent, is found to be incorporated in the pore walls of the titania aggregates, mainly as isolated sites. This is evident by transmission electron microscopy and high‐angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, combined with electron dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. This type of unique structure provides exceptional stability to this new material against thermal collapse of the mesoporous structure, which is reflected in its high surface area (the highest known for anatase titania), even after high‐temperature (550 °C) calcination. Control of crystallite size, pore diameter, and surface area is achieved by varying the molar ratios of the titanium precursor and the template during synthesis. These mesoporous materials retain their porosity and high surface area after template removal and further NaOH/HCl treatment to remove silica. We investigate their performance for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with bilayer TiO2 electrodes, which are prepared by applying a coating of m‐TiO2 onto a commercial titania (P25) film. The high surface area of the upper mesoporous layer in the P25–m‐TiO2 DSSC significantly increases the dye loading ability of the photoanode. The photocurrent and fill factor for the DSSC with the bilayer TiO2 electrode are greatly improved. The large increase in photocurrent current (ca. 56 %) in the P25–m‐TiO2 DSSC is believed to play a significant role in achieving a remarkable increase in the photovoltaic efficiency (60 %) of the device, compared to DSSCs with a monolayer of P25 as the electrode.  相似文献

The titania and dye‐dispersing titania electrodes were prepared by a nitric acid‐catalyzed sol‐gel process. The dye‐dispersing titania contains the dye molecules dispersed on the surface of the individual nanosized titania particles. The photo‐cyclic voltammetry (Photo‐CV) and photoelectric measurements of the dye‐dispersing titania electrodes were conducted to clarify the factors changing the conduction band edge of the titania and the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of the electrodes. The remaining nitrate ions caused a negative shift of conduction band edge of the titania of the dye‐dispersing titania. The conduction band edge of the titania was shifted in a negative direction in the electrode containing a greater amount of the dye. These results are due to the adsorption of nitrate ions and the dye‐titania complex formation on the titania particle surface. The effect of the dye‐titania complex formation on the shift in the titania conduction band edge was greater than that of the adsorption of nitrate ions due to strong interaction between the dye and titania through the carboxylate and quinone‐like groups of the dye. The shift in the titania conduction band edge corresponded to the change in the Voc value.  相似文献

Record laboratory efficiencies of dye‐sensitized solar cells have been recently reported using an alkoxysilyl‐anchor dye, ADEKA‐1 (over 14 %). In this work we use time‐resolved techniques to study the impact of key preparation factors (dye synthesis route, addition of co‐adsorbent, use of cobalt‐based electrolytes of different redox potential, creation of insulating Al2O3 layers and molecule capping passivation of the electrode) on the partial charge separation efficiencies in ADEKA‐1 solar cells. We have observed that unwanted fast recombination of electrons from titania to the dye, probably associated with the orientation of the dyes on the titania surface, plays a crucial role in the performance of the cells. This recombination, taking place on the sub‐ns and ns time scales, is suppressed in the optimized dye synthesis methods and upon addition of the co‐adsorbent. Capping treatment significantly reduces the charge recombination between titania and electrolyte, improving the electron lifetime from tens of ms to hundreds of ms, or even to single seconds. Similar increase in electron lifetime is observed for homogenous Al2O3 over‐layers on titania nanoparticles, however, in this case the total solar cells photocurrent is decreased due to smaller electron injection yield from the dye. Our studies should be important for a broader use of very promising silyl‐anchor dyes and the further optimization and development of dye‐sensitized solar cells.  相似文献

A porous graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4)/graphene composite was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and explored as the counter electrode of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The obtained g‐C3N4/graphene composite was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that incorporating graphene nanosheets into g‐C3N4 forms a three‐dimensional architecture with a high surface area, porous structure, efficient electron‐transport network, and fast charge‐transfer kinetics at the g‐C3N4/graphene interfaces. These properties result in more electrocatalytic active sites and facilitate electrolyte diffusion and electron transport in the porous framework. As a result, the as‐prepared porous g‐C3N4/graphene composite exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic activity. In I?/I3? redox electrolyte, the charge‐transfer resistance of the porous g‐C3N4/graphene composite electrode is 1.8 Ω cm2, which is much lower than those of individual g‐C3N4 (70.1 Ω cm2) and graphene (32.4 Ω cm2) electrodes. This enhanced electrocatalytic performance is beneficial for improving the photovoltaic performance of DSCs. By employing the porous g‐C3N4/graphene composite as the counter electrode, the DSC achieves a conversion efficiency of 7.13 %. This efficiency is comparable to 7.37 % for a cell with a platinum counter electrode.  相似文献

We report two novel types of hierarchically structured iodine‐doped ZnO (I? ZnO)‐based dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using indoline D205 and the ruthenium complex N719 as sensitizers. It was found that iodine doping boosts the efficiencies of D205 I? ZnO and N719 I? ZnO DSCs with an enhancement of 20.3 and 17.9 %, respectively, compared to the undoped versions. Transient absorption spectra demonstrated that iodine doping impels an increase in the decay time of I? ZnO, favoring enhanced exciton life. Mott–Schottky analysis results indicated a negative shift of the flat‐band potential (Vfb) of ZnO, caused by iodine doping, and this shift correlated with the enhancement of the open circuit voltage (Voc). To reveal the effect of iodine doping on the effective separation of e?‐h+ pairs which is responsible for cell efficiency, direct visualization of light‐induced changes in the surface potential between I? ZnO particles and dye molecules were traced by Kelvin probe force microscopy. We found that potential changes of iodine‐doped ZnO films by irradiation were above one hundred millivolts and thus significantly greater. In order to correlate enhanced cell performance with iodine doping, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, incident‐photon‐current efficiency, and cyclic voltammetry investigations on I? ZnO cells were carried out. The results revealed several favorable features of I? ZnO cells, that is, longer electron lifetime, lower charge‐transfer resistance, stronger peak current, and extended visible light harvest, all of which serve to promote cell performance.  相似文献

Formic acid is considered a promising energy carrier and hydrogen storage material for a carbon‐neutral economy. We present an inexpensive system for the selective room‐temperature photocatalytic conversion of formic acid into either hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Under visible‐light irradiation (λ>420 nm, 1 sun), suspensions of ligand‐capped cadmium sulfide nanocrystals in formic acid/sodium formate release up to 116±14 mmol H2 gcat?1 h?1 with >99 % selectivity when combined with a cobalt co‐catalyst; the quantum yield at λ=460 nm was 21.2±2.7 %. In the absence of capping ligands, suspensions of the same photocatalyst in aqueous sodium formate generate up to 102±13 mmol CO gcat?1 h?1 with >95 % selectivity and 19.7±2.7 % quantum yield. H2 and CO production was sustained for more than one week with turnover numbers greater than 6×105 and 3×106, respectively.  相似文献

A complex titania nanostructure of monodisperse spiky mesoporous anatase beads composed of anatase nanocrystals with diameters of less than 15 nm in the core and much larger hollow‐cone shaped spikes on the surface was fabricated using a facile solvothermal process in the presence of ammonia. This proceeded through a controllable phase transformation from an amorphous titania to a metastable amorphous titania/ammonium titanate core‐shell structure then finally to anatase titania. The size of the spiky anatase nanostructures can be increased from approximately 55×100 nm to 160×410 nm (square edge×length) by increasing the ammonia concentration used in the solvothermal treatment step from 2.2 to 17.4 wt. %. Such hollow‐cone shaped nanostructures, as revealed by HRTEM characterization, are single crystals elongated along the c axis of the tetragonal anatase titania. The resultant spiky titania beads have high surface areas of up to 112 m2g?1 and pore diameters and pore volumes that vary depending on the ammonia concentration and solvothermal treatment time. The morphological evolution and crystallization process of the spiky titania beads was investigated using SEM and XRD techniques. A metastable amorphous titania/ammonium titanate core‐shell structure evolved from the smooth amorphous precursor beads producing a “fluffy” titanate intermediate, on further heating the final spiky mesoporous titania beads were clearly observed. This titanate‐phase‐mediated approach allows control over the size of the nanocrystals in the core of the bead, as well as the anatase spikes on the surface, and thereby, tuning of the surface area and porosity of the resultant products. The spiky mesoporous titania beads have been used to prepare working electrodes for dye‐sensitized solar cells achieving a solar to electric power conversion efficiency of 10.30 %, indicating their potential for application in the photovoltaic field. Such complex titania nanostructures would have a number of other possible applications, such as photocatalysis, lithium ion batteries, and catalysis.  相似文献

Through a rapid and template‐free precipitation approach, we synthesized an asymmetric panel‐like ZnO hierarchical architecture (PHA) for photoanodes of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The two sides of the PHA are constructed differently using densely interconnected, mono‐crystalline and ultrathin ZnO nanosheets. By mixing these PHAs with ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), we developed an effective and feasible strategy to improve the electrical transport and photovoltaic performance of the composite photoanodes of DSCs. The highly crystallized and interconnected ZnO nanosheets largely minimized the total grain boundaries within the composite photoanodes and thus served as direct pathways for the transport and effective collection of free electrons. Through low‐temperature (200 °C) annealing, these novel composite photoanodes achieved high conversion efficiencies of up to 5.59 % for ZnO‐based quasi‐solid DSCs.  相似文献

A series of simple phenothiazine‐based dyes, namely, TP , EP , TTP , ETP , and EEP have been developed, in which the thiophene (T), ethylenedioxythiophene (E), their dimers, and mixtures are present to modulate dye aggregation, charge recombination, and dye regeneration for highly efficient dye‐sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications. Devices sensitized by the dyes TP and TTP display high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 8.07 (Jsc=15.2 mA cm?2, Voc=0.783 V, fill factor (FF)=0.679) and 7.87 % (Jsc=16.1 mA cm?2, Voc=0.717 V, FF=0.681), respectively; these were measured under simulated AM 1.5 sunlight in conjunction with the I?/I3? redox couple. By replacing the T group with the E unit, EP ‐based DSSCs had a slightly lower PCE of 7.98 % with a higher short‐circuit photocurrent (Jsc) of 16.7 mA cm?2. The dye ETP , with a mixture of E and T, had an even lower PCE of 5.62 %. Specifically, the cell based on the dye EEP , with a dimer of E, had inferior Jsc and Voc values and corresponded to the lowest PCE of 2.24 %. The results indicate that the photovoltaic performance can be finely modulated through structural engineering of the dyes. The selection of T analogues as donors can not only modulate light absorption and energy levels, but also have an impact on dye aggregation and interfacial charge recombination of electrons at the interface of titania, electrolytes, and/or oxidized dye molecules; this was demonstrated through DFT calculations, electrochemical impedance analysis, and transient photovoltage studies.  相似文献

A new triflic acid (TfOH)‐mediated cascade cyclization of ortho‐anisole‐substituted aryldiynes is described for the construction of indeno[1,2‐c]chromenes. The cascade cyclization proceeds through an unusual TfOH‐induced alkyne‐alkyne cyclization followed by nucleophilic attack of the methoxy group on the benzylidene cation, which is completely different to the cyclization of ortho‐aniline‐ or ortho‐thioanisole‐substituted aryldiynes. A new class of organic dyes with the indeno[1,2‐c]chromene framework as both donor and π‐linker were synthesized. These compounds exhibit high photovoltaic performances in dye‐ sensitized solar cells (DSCs).  相似文献

Three electron donor‐?? bridge‐electron acceptor (D‐π‐A) organic dyes bearing two carboxylic acid groups were applied to dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSC) as sensitizers, in which one triphenylamine or modified triphenylamine and two rhodanine‐3‐acetic acid fragments act as D and A, respectively. It was found that the introduction of t‐butyl or methoxy group in the triphenylamine subunit could lead to more efficient photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer, thus improving the overall photoelectric conversion efficiency of the resultant DSSC. Under global AM 1.5 solar irradiation (73 mW·cm?2), the dye molecule based on methoxy‐substituted triphenylamine achieved the best photovoltaic performance: a short circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) of 12.63 mA·cm?2, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.55 V, a fill factor (FF) of 0.62, corresponding to an overall efficiency (η) of 5.9%.  相似文献

A simple azulene‐containing squaraine dye ( AzUSQ ) showing bandgap of 1.38 eV and hole mobility up to 1.25×10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1 was synthesized. With its low bandgap, an organic photovoltaic (OPV) device based on it has been made that exhibits an impressive open‐circuit voltages (Voc) of 0.80 V. Hence, azulene might be a promising structural unit to construct OPV materials with simultaneous low bandgap, high hole mobility and high Voc.  相似文献

Four new donor‐π‐acceptor dyes differing in their acceptor group have been synthesized and employed as model systems to study the influence of the acceptor groups on the photophysical properties and in NiO‐based p‐type dye‐sensitized solar cells. UV/Vis absorption spectra showed a broad range of absorption coverage with maxima between 331 and 653 nm. Redox potentials as well as HOMO and LUMO energies of the dyes were determined from cyclic voltammetry measurements and evaluated concerning their potential use as sensitizers in p‐type dye‐sensitized solar cells (p‐DSCs). Quantum‐chemical density functional theory calculations gave further insight into the frontier orbital distributions, which are relevant for the electronic processes in p‐DSCs. In p‐DSCs using an iodide/triiodide‐based electrolyte, the polycyclic 9,10‐dicyano‐acenaphtho[1,2‐b]quinoxaline (DCANQ) acceptor‐containing dye gave the highest power conversion efficiency of 0.08 %, which is comparable to that obtained with the perylenemonoimide (PMI)‐containing dye. Interestingly, devices containing the DCANQ‐based dye achieve a higher VOC of 163 mV compared to 158 mV for the PMI‐containing dye. The result was further confirmed by impedance spectroscopic analysis showing higher recombination resistance and thus a lower recombination rate for devices containing the DCANQ dye than for PMI dye‐based devices. However, the use of the strong electron‐accepting tricyanofurane (TCF) group played a negative role in the device performance, yielding an efficiency of only 0.01 % due to a low‐lying LUMO energy level, thus resulting in an insufficient driving force for efficient dye regeneration. The results demonstrate that a careful molecular design with a proper choice of the acceptor unit is essential for development of sensitizers for p‐DSCs.  相似文献

Developing photosensitizers suitable for the cobalt electrolyte and understanding the structure-property relationship of organic dyes is warranted for the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The DSSCs incorporating tris(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(II/III)-based redox elec-trolyte and four synthesized organic dyes as photosensitizers are described. The photovoltaic performance of these dyes-sensitized solar cells employing the cobalt redox shuttle and the influences of the π-conjugated spacers of organic dyes upon the photovoltage and photocur-rent of mesoscopic titania solar cells are investigated. It is found that organic dyes with thiophene derivates as linkers are suitable for DSSCs employing cobalt electrolytes. DSSCs sensitized with the as-synthesized dyes in combination with the cobalt redox shuttle yield an overall power conversion efficiency of 6.1% under 100 mW/cm2 AM1.5 G illumination.  相似文献

The search for greater efficiency in organic dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSCs) and in their perovskite cousins is greatly aided by a more complete understanding of the spectral and morphological properties of the photoactive layer. This investigation resolves a discrepancy in the observed photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of two closely related DSCs based on carbazole‐containing D–π–A organic sensitizers. Detailed theoretical characterization of the absorption spectra, dye adsorption on TiO2, and electronic couplings for charge separation and recombination permit a systematic determination of the origin of the difference in PCE. Although the two dyes produce similar spectral features, ground‐ and excited‐state density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the dye with the bulkier donor group adsorbs more strongly to TiO2, experiences limited π–π aggregation, and is more resistant to loss of excitation energy via charge recombination on the dye. The effects of conformational flexibility on absorption spectra and on the electronic coupling between the bright exciton and charge‐transfer states are revealed to be substantial and are characterized through density‐functional tight‐binding (DFTB) molecular dynamics sampling. These simulations offer a mechanistic explanation for the superior open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current of the bulky‐donor dye sensitizer and provide theoretical justification of an important design feature for the pursuit of greater photocurrent efficiency in DSCs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
