Understanding the adsorption of water vapor onto activated carbons is important for designing processes to remove dilute contaminants from humid gas streams, such as providing protection against chemical warfare agents (CWAs), or against toxic industrial compounds (TICs) used in a terrorist chemical attack. Water vapor isotherms for Calgon BPL granular activated carbon (GAC), military ASZM-TEDA GAC, electrospun activated carbon nanofibers (ACnF), Calgon Zorflex activated carbon cloth, and Novoloid-based activated carbon fiber cloth (ACFC) are presented. Of particular interest are the ACFC isotherms, which exhibit an unusually high degree of hydrophobicity. The ACFC isotherms also show a correlation between water vapor adsorption hysteresis and the level of activation. Water vapor isotherm models from the literature are compared.  相似文献

Industrial grade multi-walled carbon nanotubes (IG-MWCNTs) are a low-cost substitute for commercially purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (P-MWCNTs). In this work, IG-MWCNTs were functionalized with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) for CO2 capture. The TEPA impregnated IG-MWCNTs were characterized with various experimental methods including N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Both the adsorption isotherms of IG-MWCNTs-n and the isosteric heats of different adsorption capacities were obtained from experiments. TEPA impregnated IG-MWCNTs were also shown to have high CO2 adsorption capacity comparable to that of TEPA impregnated P-MWCNTs. The adsorption capacity of IG-MWCNTs based adsorbents was in the range of 2.145 to 3.088 mmol/g, depending on adsorption temperatures. Having the advantages of low-cost and high adsorption capacity, TEPA impregnated IG-MWCNTs seem to be a promising adsorbent for CO2 capture from flue gas.  相似文献

Biomass waste, which is abundantly available has been studied as low cost biosorbent for dye sequestration from waste water. The present review reports on recent development for remediation of methylene blue dye by agricultural waste and fruit peel waste material. The aim of this study was to revise latest literature in the field of dye adsorption and discuss the dye adsorption capacity of different types of adsorbents. The activated carbon prepared from several types of biomass waste material enhances the adsorption efficiency after modification. The variety of activating agents, method of activation, characterization of biosorbent material like SEM, EDAX, BET surface area and FTIR analysis has been explored in the present review. The dye adsorption factors such as effect of pH, agitation time, temperature, adsorbate and adsorbent dose were discussed. The detailed investigation on applicability of isotherm model, kinetic model and thermodynamic parameters has also been presented. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm model focus on selectivity of adsorbent. Adsorption mechanism, Influence of surface area, influence of pHpzc and comparative study of biomass waste adsorbent with other adsorbents have been carried out. The use of biomass waste adsorbents is economically feasible, environmental healthy and found to have outstanding removal capacity of dyes.  相似文献

Magnetic nanoparticles with monodisperse shape and size were prepared by a simple method and covered by silica. The prepared core-shell Fe3O4@silica nanoparticles were functionalized by amino groups and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The synthesized nanoparticles were employed as an adsorbent for removal of Hg2+ from aqueous solutions, and the adsorption phenomena were studied from both equilibrium and kinetic point of views. The adsorption equilibriums were analyzed using different isotherm models and correlation coefficients were determined for each isotherm. The experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm better than other isotherms. The adsorption kinetics was tested for the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models at different initial concentrations of the adsorbate. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model describes the kinetics of the adsorption process for amino functionalized adsorbents. The maximum adsorption occurred at pH 5.7 and the adsorption capacity for Fe3O4@silica-NH2 toward Hg2+ was as high as 126.7 mg/g which was near four times more than unmodified silica adsorbent.  相似文献

Simultaneous improvement in adsorption selectivity and capacity for single adsorbents is challenging but counting for much in adsorptive separations. To this end, a formate metal–organic framework and activated carbon fiber composite was synthesized in our work by a simple two‐step process, involving homogeneous precipitation of a MOF precursor on an activated carbon fiber and subsequent template replication. The resultant core–shell composite, ACF@[Ni3(HCOO)6], exhibited optimized adsorption performance both in selectivity and capacity for the separation of CH4/N2 to most of state‐of‐the‐art adsorbents.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and powder-activated carbon (PAC) were used as adsorbents for adsorption of nitrofurazone, a veterinary medicine, from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized using FTIR transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of initial pH, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity of the adsorbents were investigated. For MWCNT and PAC, the result showed that when the pH value was ranged from 2.0 to 10.0, the dosage of adsorbent was 0.02 g, and adsorptive time is 4 hours, the removal efficiencies for nitrofurazone were 96.8% and 94.7%, and the corresponding maximum capacities at 283 K were close to 50.8 mgg?1 and 59.9 mgg?1, respectively. For nitrofurazone, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided the best fit to the experimental data. The Boyd model indicated the mechanism for adsorption processes was mainly external mass transfer, while the effect of particle internal diffusion was relatively weak. Liu model could best fit to the experimental data of isothermal adsorption. The data of adsorption thermodynamics showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous.  相似文献

Some potential adsorbents for ethylene/ethane separation are ethylene selective while the others are ethane selective. Among different adsorbents, i.e., zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a comparative study is critical to find the more suitable adsorbent for the separation. In this paper, binary ethylene/ethane adsorption performances of zeolites and MOFs, i.e., equilibrium selectivities and adsorption capacities are investigated utilizing ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). IAST model is applied at different gas compositions (0.1–0.9 ethylene mole fractions) and pressures up to 100 kPa. The results revealed that the most selective adsorbent toward ethylene is 5A zeolite while MOFs have higher equilibrium adsorption capacities. Among zeolites and MOFs, 5A and Fe2(dobdc) have the highest selectivity (27.4 and 13.6) and capacity (≈2.8 and 5.8 mmol ethylene/g) at 100 kPa and 298 K for a 50/50 mixture. Among ethane selective adsorbents, Silicalite-1 zeolite and UTSA-33a (MOF) have the highest selectivity and capacity (≈2.9 and ≈1.5 mmol ethane/g) at 100 kPa and 298 K for a 50/50 mixture, respectively. Investigation showed that adsorption capacity of ethylene selective adsorbents is higher than that of ethane selective ones.  相似文献

A Cr‐based metal–organic framework, namely, MIL‐101(Cr), was modified with amino (NH2–) and urea (UR2–) groups, and the materials were evaluated as adsorbents for glyphosate, and a comparison with commercial activated carbon was also discussed. The effects of the adsorption factors, such as adsorbent concentration, adsorption time, pH and ionic strength were mainly investigated. The results showed that a pseudo‐second‐order rate equation described the adsorption kinetics mechanisms well, while the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model fitted different adsorption isotherms, respectively. Among the adsorbents we studied, NH2‐MIL‐101(Cr) showed the maximum adsorbing capacity, which is 64.25 mg/g when pH = 3.0, while UR2‐MIL‐101(Cr) did not reach the best adsorption performance due to the steric hindrance. The work opens up a new way for the modification of metal–organic frameworks for adsorption process.  相似文献

A composite adsorbent based on zirconium dioxide hydrosol and functionalized carbon nanotubes for removing soluble boron compounds from aqueous solutions was synthesized by the sol–gel method. Measurements of the borate adsorption on the synthesized adsorbent samples showed that introduction of carbon nanotubes into ZrO2 sols used for preparing the adsorbents enhanced the adsorption ability of the adsorbents.  相似文献

Aqueous 1,1,2-trichloroethene (TCE) adsorption isotherms were obtained on Ambersorb 563 and 572 adsorbents and Filtrasorb 400 granular activated carbon (GAC). The data for Ambersorb 563 adsorbent covers TCE concentrations from 0.0009 to 600 mg/L. The data for each adsorbent was fit to 15 isotherm equations to determine an optimum equation. The best equation for the TCE adsorption isotherms is the Dubinin-Astakov (DA) isotherm. The DA isotherm coefficients were used to estimate the TCE micropore volume and the adsorption potential distribution. For each adsorbent, the TCE micropore volume is equivalent to the N2 porosimetry micropore volume. The mean adsorption potential is 18.8, 13.0, and 8.9 kJ/mol, with coefficients of variation of 0.37, 0.53, and 0.67, for Ambersorb 563 and 572 adsorbents and Filtrasorb 400 GAC, respectively. Thus, Ambersorb 563 adsorbent has the most energetic and most homogeneous adsorption volume, while Filtrasorb 400 GAC has the least energetic and most heterogeneous adsorption volume. For these reasons, Ambersorb 563 adsorbent has the highest TCE capacity at low concentrations, whereas Filtrasorb 400 GAC has the highest TCE capacity at high concentrations. The performance of Ambersorb 572 adsorbent is generally intermediate to the other two adsorbents.  相似文献

A simulation study was conducted on layered-bed pressure-swing adsorption, PSA, processes with adsorbents that differ in their adsorption properties. As an example, an oxygen, O2, vacuum-swing adsorption, VSA, process was analyzed to investigate relationships between process performance and adsorption properties of the adsorbents used. For two adsorbents with identical nitrogen-to-oxygen, N2/O2, selectivity but different N2 and O2 capacities, placing the high-capacity adsorbent at the product end and the low-capacity adsorbent at the feed end of the adsorption bed gives a better performance than the case of reversing layering of these adsorbents. However, for two adsorbents with different values of N2/O2 selectivity but identical N2 capacity, changing the bed-layer configuration does not show a significant difference in O2-VSA performance. The advantages of layering a high-capacity adsorbent on product end of the bed are demonstrated by an examination of the N2-loading difference in a VSA cycle. The modeling study also reveals an effect of cycle features (e.g., equalization step) on the effectiveness of using layered-bed configurations in VSA/PSA processes. It suggests that layering appropriately two adsorbents with different adsorption properties could result in better VSA/PSA-process performance than using a single-layer bed with either of the two adsorbents.  相似文献

In this article, highly efficient magnetic chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by the glutaraldehyde cross-linking method and then chemically-modified with amino groups through reaction between triethylenetramine and glycidyl methacrylate. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of these novel adsorbents fit the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities were 293?mg/g at pH?=?4.3 and t?=?1.4 hours. The rate-limiting step was the chemical adsorption. Further recycling experiments showed that the adsorbent provided the potential regeneration and reuse after adsorbing Cu2+. All the experimental results demonstrated that the adsorbent had a potential application in Cu2+ removal from wastewater.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted on a layered-bed pressure-vacuum-swing adsorption, PVSA, process with adsorbents that differ in their adsorption properties. An oxygen, O2, PVSA process was employed as an example for investigating how the process performance is affected by bed-layering configuration under different operating conditions for specific purge, product purity, and cycle feature. For two adsorbents with similar nitrogen-to-oxygen, N2/O2, selectivity but different N2 and O2 capacities, placing the high-capacity adsorbent at the product end and the low-capacity adsorbent at the feed end of the adsorption bed results in a better performance than in the case of reversing the layer positions of those adsorbents. The benefit of placing the adsorbent with higher capacity at the product end becomes more significant at high O2 product-purity levels. The experimental data obtained in this investigation agree well with simulation results reported earlier.  相似文献

Bromate, which is a potential carcinogen, should be removed from drinking water to levels of less than 10 μg/L. A chitosan‐based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and a sol–gel ion‐exchange double hydrous oxide (Fe2O3·Al2O3·xH2O) adsorbent (inorganic adsorbent) were prepared for this purpose. The sorption behavior of each adsorbent including sorption kinetics, isotherms, effect of pH and selective sorption were investigated in detail. Sorption experimental results showed that the MIP adsorbents had better selectivity for bromate, even in the presence of high concentrations of nitrate, as compared to the inorganic adsorbent. It was found that pH does not affect the adsorption of bromate when using the inorganic adsorbent. Additionally, both adsorbents were immobilized in a polymeric cryogel inside plastic carriers to make them more practical for using in larger scale. Regeneration of the cryogels either containing MIP or inorganic adsorbents were carried out by 0.1 M NaOH and 0.1 M NaCl, respectively. It was found that the regenerated MIP and inorganic adsorbents could be used at least three and five times, respectively, without any loss in their sorption capacity.  相似文献

A carbon dioxide imprinted solid amine adsorbent (IPEIA‐R) with polyethylenimine (PEI) as a skeleton was conveniently prepared by using glutaraldehyde to cross‐link carbon dioxide‐preadsorbed PEI. As confirmed by FTIR, FT‐Raman, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, CO2 preadsorbed on PEI could occupy the reactive sites of amino groups and act as a template for imprinting in the cross‐linking process. The imino groups formed from the cross‐linking reaction between glutaraldehyde and PEI could be reduced by NaBH4 to form CO2‐adsorbable amino groups. The adsorption results indicated that CO2 imprinting and reduction of imino groups by NaBH4 endowed the adsorbent with a higher CO2 adsorption capacity. Compared with PEI‐supported mesoporous adsorbents, the solid amine adsorbent with PEI as a skeleton can avoid serious pore blockage and CO2 diffusion resistance, even with a high amine content. The solid amine adsorbent with PEI as a skeleton showed a remarkable CO2 adsorption capacity (8.56 mmol g?1) in the presence of water at 25 °C, owing to the high amine content and good swelling properties. It also showed promising regeneration performance and could maintain almost the same CO2 adsorption capacity after 15 adsorption–desorption cycles.  相似文献

Abstract

EDCC-MCM-41, a novel ethylenediamine derivative of MCM-41 was synthesized from a sugar industry waste, bagasse fly ash. Studies were carried out on its ability to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. Its performance was also compared with that of unmodified MCM-41 and an already known derivative NH2-MCM-41 (both also synthesized from bagasse fly ash) at the same experimental conditions. Results show that the novel adsorbent produced a better sorption performance (adsorption capacity of 49.04?mg g?1) than MCM-41 and NH2-MCM-41 which produced adsorption capacities of 13.78?mg g?1 and 25.29?mg g?1 respectively. Thermodynamics, kinetics and isotherm studies confirm that the sorption process involving the novel adsorbent is favorable for Cr(VI) and can best be represented by pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The sorption process was also found to be multistep, involving both film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion into the pores on the adsorbent’s surface.

Kapok fiber, a natural hollow fiber with thin shell and large cavity, has rarely been used as adsorbent for heavy metal ions. In this paper, kapok fibers were modified with diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) after hydrophilicity treatment. The adsorption behavior of the resultant kapok-DTPA influenced by pH, adsorption time and initial concentration of metal ion was investigated. The results demonstrate that adsorption equilibrium was reached within 2 min for Pb2+ and Cd2+. Adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption rate was well fitted by pseudo-second-order rate model. The adsorption isotherms were studied, and the best fit was obtained in the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of kapok-DTPA were 310.6 mg g?1 for Pb2+, 163.7 mg g?1 for Cd2+, 101.0 mg g?1 for Cu2+, respectively. After eight desorption and re-adsorption loops, the lost adsorption capacities for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were less than 10 %. Because of the large specific area derived from the hollow fiber structure, kapok-DTPA exhibited much better adsorption capacity compared with many other reported adsorbents based on natural materials.  相似文献

Waste carbon slurries (generated in fertilizer plants) and blast furnace slag (generated in steel plants) have been converted into low-cost potential adsorbents. The adsorbents have been characterized and tried for the removal of the dye basic red from wastewater. Studies were performed at different pH to find the pH at which maximum adsorption occurs. Equilibrium isotherms were determined to assess the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents. Adsorption capacities are compared for activated carbon developed from fertilizer waste and activated slag developed from blast furnace waste. The adsorption data are correlated with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms in each system. The kinetics of adsorption depends on the adsorbate concentration and the physical and chemical characteristics of the adsorbent. Studies were conducted to delineate the effect of pH, temperature, initial absorbate concentration, particle size of the adsorbent, and solid-to-liquid ratio. The adsorption of basic red was found to be endothermic and first-order in nature.  相似文献

Silica supported amine materials are promising compositions that can be used to effectively remove CO2 from large stationary sources, such as flue gas generated from coal‐fired power plants (ca. 10 % CO2) and potentially from ambient air (ca. 400 ppm CO2). The CO2 adsorption characteristics of prototypical poly(ethyleneimine)–silica composite adsorbents can be significantly enhanced by altering the acid/base properties of the silica support by heteroatom incorporation into the silica matrix. In this study, an array of poly(ethyleneimine)‐impregnated mesoporous silica SBA‐15 materials containing heteroatoms (Al, Ti, Zr, and Ce) in their silica matrices are prepared and examined in adsorption experiments under conditions simulating flue gas (10 % CO2 in Ar) and ambient air (400 ppm CO2 in Ar) to assess the effects of heteroatom incorporation on the CO2 adsorption properties. The structure of the composite adsorbents, including local information concerning the state of the incorporated heteroatoms and the overall surface properties of the silicate supports, are investigated in detail to draw a relationship between the adsorbent structure and CO2 adsorption/desorption performance. The CO2 adsorption/desorption kinetics are assessed by thermogravimetric analysis and in situ FT‐IR measurements. These combined results, coupled with data on adsorbent regenerability, demonstrate a stabilizing effect of the heteroatoms on the poly(ethyleneimine), enhancing adsorbent capacity, adsorption kinetics, regenerability, and stability of the supported aminopolymers over continued cycling. It is suggested that the CO2 adsorption performance of silica–aminopolymer composites may be further enhanced in the future by more precisely tuning the acid/base properties of the support.  相似文献
