Consider the expected profit maximizing inventory placement problem in an N-stage, supply chain facing a stochastic demand for a single planning period for a specialty item with a very short selling season. Each stage is a stocking point holding some form of inventory (e.g., raw materials, subassemblies, product returns or finished products) that after a suitable transformation can satisfy customer demand. Stocking decisions are made before demand occurs. Because of delays, only a known fraction of demand at a stage will wait for shipments. Unsatisfied demand is lost. The revenue, salvage value, ordering, shipping, processing, and lost sales costs are proportional. There are fixed costs for utilizing stages for stock storage. After characterizing an optimal solution, we propose an algorithm for its computation. For the zero fixed cost case, the computations can be done on a spreadsheet given normal demands. For the nonnegative fixed cost case, we develop an effective branch and bound algorithm.  相似文献

We consider a continuous-review inventory problem for a retailer facing constant customer demand for a single product. This retailer is assumed to follow the well known and widely used order-up-to policy in making replenishment decisions, and can order from two suppliers who differ in reliability and costs. Supplier 1, the primary supplier, is cheaper, but is subject to random disruptions. Supplier 2, the backup supplier or the contingent source, is more expensive, but is perfectly reliable. If Supplier 1 is available when the inventory level at the retailer reaches the reorder point, the retailer orders from Supplier 1. Otherwise, it will wait for a while to see if Supplier 1 can recover from the disruption quickly. If so, it will still get replenishment from Supplier 1 to take advantage of its lower charge. However, the retailer will reroute to the backup supplier if Supplier 1 still does not recover from the disruption when the cap of waiting (the maximal waiting time of the retailer if Supplier 1 is disrupted) is reached. We analytically study the optimal sourcing and replenishment decisions at the retailer, and the impacts of various problem parameters on the optimal decisions. We also conduct extensive numerical experiments to compare different sourcing and replenishment decisions the retailer can make and get further managerial insights into the problem.  相似文献

Theoretical inventory models with constant demand rate and two transportation modes are analyzed in this paper. The transportation options are truckloads with fixed costs, a package delivery carrier with a constant cost per unit, or using a combination of both modes simultaneously. Exact algorithms for computing the optimal policies are derived for single stage models over both an infinite and a finite planning horizon.  相似文献

Item demands at individual retail stores in a chain often differ significantly, due to local economic conditions, cultural and demographic differences and variations in store format. Accounting for these variations appropriately in inventory management can significantly improve retailers’ profits. For example, it is shown that having greater differences across the mean store demands leads to a higher expected profit, for a given inventory and total mean demand. If more than one inventory shipment per season is possible, the analysis becomes dynamic by including updated demand forecasts for each store and re-optimizing store inventory policies in midseason. In this paper, we formulate a dynamic stochastic optimization model that determines the total order size and the optimal inventory allocation across nonidentical stores in each period. A generalized Bayesian inference model is used for demands that are partially correlated across the stores and time periods. We also derive a normal approximation for the excess inventory from the previous period, which allows the dynamic programming formulation to be easily solved. We analyze the tradeoffs between obtaining information and profitability, e.g., stocking more stores in period 1 provides more demand information for period 2, but does not necessarily lead to higher total profit. Numerical analyses compare the expected profits of alternative supply chain strategies, as well as the sensitivity to different distributions of demand across the stores. This leads to novel strategic insights that arise from adopting inventory policies that vary by store type.  相似文献

Technological advances and changes in supply chain management practices have combined to draw attention to the value of information sharing in inventory replenishment. Academic research has produced seemingly conflicting results due to differences in the type of information that is shared, the supply chain structure, and the selection and parameterization of performance goals. This research provides a framework to help explain apparent differences in the extant literature. Our purpose is to understand what determines the value of information. This paper considers a single-echelon inventory system with a warehouse facing compound Poisson customer demand. Normally the warehouse replenishes from an outside supplier according to a continuous review reorder point policy. However, it is also possible to use emergency orders. Such orders incur additional costs but have a much shorter lead time. We consider standard holding and backorder costs as well as ordering costs. A heuristic decision rule for triggering emergency orders is suggested. The decision rule minimizes the expected costs under the assumption that there is only a single possibility for an emergency replenishment, but the rule is used repeatedly as a heuristic. Given a certain reorder point policy for normal replenishments, our decision rule will always reduce the expected costs. A simulation study illustrates that the suggested technique performs well under different conditions.  相似文献

Past research on inventory management of perishables introduced models in which demand is sensitive to the age of the product. For such models, we prove that a fixed-order quantity policy is optimal under certain conditions and show that its expected cost is closer to optimal than that of the base-stock level policy when there is demand for units of all ages. We also show numerically when substituting older products to fulfill the demand for new (or vice versa) is beneficial.  相似文献

An efficient inventory planning approach in today’s global trading regime is necessary not only for increasing the profit margin, but also to maintain system flexibility for achieving higher customer satisfaction. Such an approach should hence be comprised of a prudent inventory policy and clear satisfaction of stakeholder’s goals. Relative significance given to various objectives in a supply chain network varies with product as well as time. In this paper, a model is proposed to fill this void for a single product inventory control of a supply chain consisting of three echelons. A generic modification proposed to the membership functions of the fuzzy goal-programming approach is used to mathematically map the aspiration levels of the decision maker. The bacterial foraging algorithm has been modified with enhancement of the algorithms’ capability to map integer solution spaces and utilised to solve resulting fuzzy multi-objective function. An illustrative example comprehensively covers various decision scenarios and highlights the underlying managerial insights.  相似文献

Supply chain management refers to the integration of all activities associated with moving goods from raw material stages through to end users. Yet this system-wide vision of inventory planning often requires the coordination of several commercially independent entities, such as suppliers, manufacturers and distributors. This study explores the issue of friction between replenishment policies, defined as the disparity between centrally and locally planned solutions to 98,820 deterministic, multiple stage inventory planning problems modeling systems of varying levels of complexity. Friction is found to be strongly related to certain cost factors, suggesting that certain supply chains could be more vulnerable to tension and inefficiencies when replenishment policies are derived without cooperation between commercially independent yet logistically interdependent stages. These results can also be applied to identify relationships between the findings of otherwise seemingly disparate previous studies of coordination schemes for supply chain partners.  相似文献

In this paper we apply linear control theory to study the effect of various inventory policies on order and inventory variability, which are key drivers of supply chain performance. In particular, we study a two-echelon supply chain with a stationary demand pattern under the influence of three inventory policies: an inventory-on-hand policy that bases orders on the visible inventory at an installation, an installation-stock policy that bases orders on the inventory position (on-hand plus on-order inventory) at an installation, and an echelon-stock policy that bases orders on the inventory position at that installation and all downstream installations. We prove analytically that the inventory-on-hand policy is unstable in practical settings, confirming analytically what has been observed in experimental settings and in practice. We also prove that the installation-stock and echelon-stock policies are stable and analyze their effect on order and inventory fluctuation. Specifically, we show the general superiority of the echelon-stock in our setting and demonstrate analytically the effect of forecasting parameters on order and inventory fluctuations, confirming the results in other research.  相似文献

This paper proposes an adaptive fuzzy control application to support a vendor managed inventory (VMI). The methodology applies fuzzy control to generate an adaptive smoothing constant in the forecast method, production and delivery plan to eliminate, for example, the rationing and gaming or the Houlihan effect and the order batching effect or the Burbidge effects and finally the Bullwhip effect. The results show that the adaptive fuzzy VMI control surpasses fuzzy VMI control and traditional VMI in terms of mitigating the Bullwhip effect and lower delivery overshoots and backorders. This paper also guides management in allocating inventory by coordinating suppliers and buyers to ensure minimum inventory levels across a supply chain. Adaptive fuzzy VMI control is the main contribution of this paper.  相似文献

Although supply chain scholars very often assume the availability of error free data pertaining to the flow of goods that come in and go out of an inventory system as well as the on hand inventory level, some recent investigations show that this may not be true even in facilities where advanced item identification and data capture technologies such as the barcode system are used. This paper proposes a single period model where the inventory data capture process using the barcode system is prone to errors that lead to inaccuracies. In the first part of our work, we derive analytically the optimal policy in presence of errors when both demand and errors are uniformly distributed. In the second part, we examine quantitatively the impact of record inaccuracies on the performance of an inventory system, in terms of additional overage and shortage costs incurred.  相似文献

Although splitting shipments across multiple delivery modes typically increases total shipping costs as a result of diseconomies of scale, it may offer certain benefits that can more than offset these costs. These benefits include a reduction in the probability of stockout and in the average inventory costs. We consider a single-stage inventory replenishment model that includes two delivery modes: a cheaper, less reliable mode, and another, more expensive but perfectly reliable mode. The high-reliability mode is only utilized in replenishment intervals in which the lead time of the less-reliable mode exceeds a certain value. This permits substituting the high-reliability mode for safety stock, to some degree. We characterize optimal replenishment decisions with these two modes, as well as the potential benefits of simultaneously using two delivery modes.  相似文献

Information visibility is generally useful for decision makers distributed across supply chains. Availability of information on inventory levels, price, lead times, demand, etc. can help reduce uncertainties as well as alleviate problems associated with bullwhip effect. A majority of extant literature in this area assume a static supply chain network configuration. While this was sufficient a few decades ago, advances in e-commerce and the ease with which order processing can be performed over the Internet necessitates appropriate dynamic (re)configuration of supply chains over time. Each node in the supply chain is modeled as an actor who makes independent decisions based on information gathered from the next level upstream. A knowledge-based framework is used for dynamic supply chain configuration and to consider the effects of inventory constraints and ‘goodwill,’ as well as their effects on the performance dynamics of supply chains. Preliminary results indicate that neither static nor dynamic configurations are consistently dominant. Scenarios where static configurations perform better than the modeled system are identified.  相似文献

This paper presents an integrated inventory distribution optimization model that simultaneously incorporates the issues of location, production, inventory, and transportation within a supply chain. The objective is to determine the optimal number and size of shipments under varying but commonly practiced production and shipping scenarios. A continuous approximation procedure is proposed to determine the optimal number and size of shipments. Three production and shipping scenarios are investigated and closed form expressions for the optimal number of shipments for each scenario are obtained. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the model.  相似文献

As the implementation of JIT practice becomes increasingly popular, each echelon in a supply chain tends to carry fewer inventories, and thus the whole supply chain is made more vulnerable to lost sales and/or backorders. The purpose of this paper is to recast the inventory model to be more relevant to current situations, where the penalty cost for a shortage occurrence at a downstream stage in a supply chain is continually transmitted to the upstream stages. The supplier, in this case, at the upstream of the supply chain is responsible for all the downstream shortages due to the chain reaction of its backlog. The current paper proposes a model in which the backorder cost per unit time is a linearly increasing function of shortage time, and it claims that the optimal policy for the supplier is setting the optimal shortage time per inventory cycle to minimize its total relevant cost in a JIT environment.  相似文献

Given the prevalence of both supplier selection and inventory control problems in supply chain management, this article addresses these problems simultaneously by developing a mathematical model for a serial system. This model determines an optimal inventory policy that coordinates the transfer of items between consecutive stages of the system while properly allocating orders to selected suppliers in stage 1. In addition, a lower bound on the minimum total cost per time unit is obtained and a 98% effective power-of-two (POT) inventory policy is derived for the system under consideration. This POT algorithm is advantageous since it is simple to compute and yields near optimal solutions.  相似文献

Huang (2010) [1] proposed an integrated inventory model with trade credit financing in which the vendor decides its production lot size while the buyer determines its expenditure to minimize the annual integrated total cost for both the vendor and the buyer. In this paper, we extend his integrated supply chain model to reflect the following four facts: (1) generated sales revenue is deposited in an interest-bearing account for the buyer, (2) the buyer’s interest earned is not always less than or equal to its interest charged, (3) the total number of shipments in one lot size is the vendor’s decision variable to minimize the cost, and (4) it is vital to have a discrimination term which can determine whether the buyer’s replenishment cycle time is less than the permissible delay period or not. We then derive the necessary and sufficient conditions to obtain the optimal solution, and establish some theoretical results to characterize the optimal solution. Finally, numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed model and its optimal solution.  相似文献

We address the issue of contract breachability in a supply chain involving a retailer and a manufacturer operating under ship-to-order contract terms and stochastic demands. The manufacturer is required to fulfill the retailer’s demands on a continuous basis with little or no advance notice. The issue in such an environment is whether the retailer can “naively” assume that she will get a very high fill rate from the manufacturer and therefore has no need for contract penalties in case the manufacturer’s inventory falls short. We suggest a stochastic calculus framework to study the problem and derive a condition when the retailer’s naïve assumption is justified since the probability of stock-outs of the manufacturer is negligible. That is, the ship-to-order contract will not be breached and the fill rate will be more than a predetermined threshold. Furthermore we find that although the manufacturer-owned direct channel generates more revenue and may reduce the volatility of both inventory and production orders, the ratio between expected direct channel and retail sales affects the benefits.  相似文献
