A direct ab initio molecular dynamics method has been applied to a water monomer and water clusters (H(2)O)(n) (n = 1-3) to elucidate the effects of zero-point energy (ZPE) vibration on the absorption spectra of water clusters. Static ab initio calculations without ZPE showed that the first electronic transitions of (H(2)O)(n), (1)B(1)←(1)A(1), are blue-shifted as a function of cluster size (n): 7.38 eV (n = 1), 7.58 eV (n = 2) and 8.01 eV (n = 3). The inclusion of the ZPE vibration strongly affects the excitation energies of a water dimer, and a long red-tail appears in the range of 6.42-6.90 eV due to the structural flexibility of a water dimer. The ultraviolet photodissociation of water clusters and water ice surfaces is relevant to these results.  相似文献

Semiempirical, ab initio, and density functional theory calculations are used to locate many low-energy minima on the potential energy surfaces of the CH2OHCOOH-(H2O)n complexes with n = 3,4,5,6. In the clusters with three, four, and five water molecules, the lowest-energy structure consists of a (H2O)n complex, not necessarily of lowest energy, hydrogen bonded to the carboxylic group of the glycolic acid. The lowest-energy structure for n = 6 is similar except that the water hexamer is hydrogen bonded to both the carboxylic and alpha-hydroxyl groups of the acid. In all the lowest-energy clusters, the intramolecular hydrogen bond remains intact in the glycolic acid.  相似文献

The first mass-selective vibrational spectra have been recorded for Na(NH3)n clusters. Infrared spectra have been obtained for n = 3-8 in the N-H stretching region. The spectroscopic work has been supported by ab initio calculations carried out at both the DFT(B3LYP) and MP2 levels, using a 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The calculations reveal that the lowest energy isomer for n or= 7 is indicative of molecules entering a second solvation shell, i.e., the inner solvation shell around the sodium atom can accommodate a maximum of six NH3 molecules.  相似文献

An efficient approach is described for using accurate ab initio calculations to determine the rates of elementary condensation and evaporation processes that lead to nucleation of aqueous aerosols. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated in an application to evaporation rates of water dimer at 230 K. The method, known as ABC-FEP (ab initio/classical free energy perturbation), begins with a calculation of the potential of mean force for the dissociation (evaporation) of small water clusters using a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with a model potential. The free energy perturbation is used to calculate how changing from the model potential to a potential calculated from ab initio methods would alter the potential of mean force. The difference in free energy is the Boltzmann-weighted average of the difference between the ab initio and classical potential energies, with the average taken over a sample of configurations from the MD simulation. In principle, the method does not require a highly accurate model potential, though more accurate potentials require fewer configurations to achieve a small sampling error in the free energy perturbation step. To test the feasibility of obtaining accurate potentials of mean force from ab initio calculations at a modest number of configurations, the free energy perturbation method has been used to correct the errors when some standard models for bulk water (SPC, TIP4P, and TIP4PFQ) are applied to water dimer. To allow a thorough exploration of sampling issues, a highly accurate fit to results of accurate ab initio calculations, known as SAPT-5s, as been used a proxy for the ab initio calculations. It is shown that accurate values for a point on the potential of mean force can be obtained from any of the water models using ab initio calculations at only 50 configurations. Thus, this method allows accurate simulations of small clusters without the need to develop water models specifically for clusters.  相似文献

We present full-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) for hydrated chloride based on the sum of ab initio (H(2)O)Cl(-), (H(2)O)(2), and (H(2)O)(3) potentials. The PESs are shown to predict minima and corresponding harmonic frequencies accurately on the basis of comparisons with previous and new ab initio calculations for (H(2)O)(2)Cl(-), (H(2)O)(3)Cl(-), and (H(2)O)(4)Cl(-). An estimate of the effect of the 3-body water interaction is made using a simple 3-body water potential that was recently fit to tens of thousands of ab initio 3-body energies. Anharmonic, coupled vibrational calculations are presented for these clusters, using the "local monomer model" for the high frequency intramolecular modes. This model is tested against previous "exact" calculations for (H(2)O)Cl(-). Radial distribution functions at 0 K obtained from quantum zero-point wave functions are also presented for the (H(2)O)(2)Cl(-) and (H(2)O)(3)Cl(-) clusters.  相似文献

We have carried out ab initio and density functional theory calculations of hydrated rubidium cations. The calculations involve a detailed evaluation of the structures, thermodynamic properties, and IR spectra of several plausible conformers of Rb+ (H2O)(n=1-8) clusters. An extensive search was made to find out the most stable conformers. Since the water-water interactions are important in hydrated Rb+ complexes, we investigated the vibrational frequency shifts of the OH stretching modes depending on the number of water molecules and the presence/absence of outer-shell water molecules. The predicted harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies of the aqua-Rb+ clusters reflect the H-bonding signature, and would be used in experimental identification of the hydrated structures of Rb+ cation.  相似文献

The behavior of small water clusters, (H2O)n, n=2-5 and n=8, in a uniform electric field is investigated for three related rigid-body models. Changes in the properties of the low-lying potential energy minima and the rearrangement pathways between them are examined. Results for certain structural transitions are compared with recent ab initio calculations. The models are found to give qualitatively similar trends, and there is some evidence that as the applied field strength is increased the quantitative differences between the models are also reduced.  相似文献

In this work we focus on the binding of excess electrons to water clusters, a problem for which dispersion interactions, which originate from long-range correlation effects, are especially important. Two different model potential approaches, one using quantum Drude oscillators and the other using polarization potentials, are investigated for describing the long-range correlation effects between the weakly bound excess electron and the more tightly bound electrons of the monomers. We show that these two approaches are related in that the polarization potential models can be derived from the quantum Drude model approach by use of an adiabatic separation between the excess electron and the Drude oscillators. The model potential approaches are applied to clusters containing up to 45 water monomers. Where possible, comparison is made with the results of ab initio electronic structure calculations. Overall, the polarization potential approach is found to give electron binding energies in good agreement with those from the Drude model and ab initio calculations, with the greatest discrepancies being found for "cavity-bound" anion states.  相似文献

We report the definition and testing of a new ab initio 12-dimensional potential for the water dimer with flexible monomers. Using our recent accurate CCpol-8s rigid water pair potential [W. Cencek, K. Szalewicz, C. Leforestier, R. van Harrevelt, and A. van der Avoird, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 10, 4716 (2008)] as a reference for the undistorted monomers' geometries, a distortion correction has been added, which was taken from a former flexible-monomer ab initio potential. This correction allows us to retrieve the correct binding energy D(e)=21.0 kJ mol(-1), and leads to an equilibrium geometry in close agreement with the one obtained from benchmark calculations. The kinetic energy operator describing the flexible-monomer water dimer has been expressed in terms of Radau coordinates for each monomer and a recent general cluster polyspherical formulation describing their relative motions. Within this formulation, an adiabatic scheme has been invoked in order to decouple fast (intramolecular) modes and slow (intermolecular) ones. Different levels of approximation were tested, which differ in the way in which the residual potential coupling between the intramolecular modes located on different monomers and the dependence of the monomer rotational constants on the dimer geometry are handled. Accurate calculations of the vibration-rotation-tunneling levels of (H(2)O)(2) and (D(2)O)(2) were performed, which show the best agreement with experiments achieved so far for any water potential. Intramolecular excitations of the two monomers were calculated within two limiting cases, to account for the lack of non-adiabatic coupling between intramolecular modes due to the intermolecular motion. In the first model, the excitation was assumed to stay either on the donor or the acceptor molecule, and to hop between the two moieties upon donor-acceptor interchange. In the second model, the excitation remains on the same molecule whatever is the dimer geometry. Marginal frequency differences, less than 2?cm(-1), were obtained for all modes, and the resulting infrared shifts are in good agreement with experiments.  相似文献

The vibrational spectroscopy of (SO4(2-)).(H2O)n is studied by theoretical calculations for n=1-5, and the results are compared with experiments for n=3-5. The calculations use both ab initio MP2 and DFT/B3LYP potential energy surfaces. Both harmonic and anharmonic calculations are reported, the latter with the CC-VSCF method. The main findings are the following: (1) With one exception (H2O bending mode), the anharmonicity of the observed transitions, all in the experimental window of 540-1850 cm(-1), is negligible. The computed anharmonic coupling suggests that intramolecular vibrational redistribution does not play any role for the observed linewidths. (2) Comparison with experiment at the harmonic level of computed fundamental frequencies indicates that MP2 is significantly more accurate than DFT/B3LYP for these systems. (3) Strong anharmonic effects are, however, calculated for numerous transitions of these systems, which are outside the present observation window. These include fundamentals as well as combination modes. (4) Combination modes for the n=1 and n=2 clusters are computed. Several relatively strong combination transitions are predicted. These show strong anharmonic effects. (5) An interesting effect of the zero point energy (ZPE) on structure is found for (SO4(2-)).(H2O)(5): The global minimum of the potential energy corresponds to a C(s) structure, but with incorporation of ZPE the lowest energy structure is C2v, in accordance with experiment. (6) No stable structures were found for (OH-).(HSO4-).(H2O)n, for n相似文献

The work presents ab initio results on structure and electronic properties of Br2*-.nH2O(n=1-10) and Br2.nH2O(n=1-8) hydrated clusters to study the effects of an excess electron on the microhydration of the halide dimer. A nonlocal density functional, namely, Becke's half-and-half hybrid exchange-correlation functional is found to perform well on the present systems with a split valence 6-31++G(d,p) basis function. Geometry optimizations for all the clusters are carried out with several initial guess structures and without imposing any symmetry restriction. Br2*-.nH2O clusters prefer to have symmetrical double hydrogen-bonding structures. Results on Br2.nH2O(n>or=2) cluster show that the O atom of one H2O is oriented towards one Br atom and the H atom of another H2O is directed to other Br atom making Br2 to exist as Br+-Br- entity in the cluster. The binding and solvation energies are calculated for the Br2*-.nH2O and Br2.nH2O clusters. Calculations of the vibrational frequencies show that the formation of Br2*- and Br2 water clusters induces significant shifts from the normal modes of isolated water. Excited-state calculations are carried out on Br2*-.nH2O clusters following configuration interaction with single electron excitation procedure and UV-VIS absorption profiles are simulated. There is an excellent agreement between the present theoretical UV-VIS spectra of Br2*-.10H2O cluster and the reported transient optical spectra for Br2*- in aqueous solution.  相似文献

(H2O)(N) clusters generated in a supersonic expansion source with N approximately 1000 were core ionized by synchrotron radiation, giving rise to core-level photoelectron and Auger electron spectra (AES), free from charging effects. The AES is interpreted as being intermediate between the molecular and solid water spectra showing broadened bands as well as a significant shoulder at high kinetic energy. Qualitative considerations as well as ab initio calculations explain this shoulder to be due to delocalized final states in which the two valence holes are mostly located at different water molecules. The ab initio calculations show that valence hole configurations with both valence holes at the core-ionized water molecule are admixed to these final states and give rise to their intensity in the AES. Density-functional investigations of model systems for the doubly ionized final states--the water dimer and a 20-molecule water cluster--were performed to analyze the localization of the two valence holes in the electronic ground states. Whereas these holes are preferentially located at the same water molecule in the dimer, they are delocalized in the cluster showing a preference of the holes for surface molecules. The calculated double-ionization potential of the cluster (22.1 eV) is in reasonable agreement with the low-energy limit of the delocalized hole shoulder in the AES.  相似文献

We are reporting ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the phenol O–H bond dissociation energy in the gas phase and in phenol–water clusters. We have tested a series of recently proposed functionals and verified that DFT systematically underestimates the O–H bond dissociation energy of phenol. However, O–H bond dissociation energies in water clusters are in reasonable agreement with experimental data for phenol in solution. We have evaluated electronic difference densities in phenol–water, phenoxy–water, and water, and we are suggesting that the representation of this quantity gives an interesting picture of the electronic density rearrangement induced by hydrogen bond interactions in phenol–water clusters. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Anharmonic vibrational frequencies and intensities are computed for hydrogen fluoride clusters (HF)n, with n = 3, 4 and mixed clusters of hydrogen fluoride with water (HF)n(H2O)n where n = 1, 2. For the (HF)4(H2O)4 complex, the vibrational spectra are calculated at the harmonic level, and anharmonic effects are estimated. Potential energy surfaces for these systems are obtained at the MP2/TZP level of electronic structure theory. Vibrational states are calculated from the potential surface points using the correlation-corrected vibrational self-consistent field method. The method accounts for the anharmonicities and couplings between all vibrational modes and provides fairly accurate anharmonic vibrational spectra that can be directly compared with experimental results without a need for empirical scaling. For (HF)n, good agreement is found with experimental data. This agreement shows that the M?ller-Plesset (MP2) potential surfaces for these systems are reasonably reliable. The accuracy is best for the stiff intramolecular modes, which indicates the validity of MP2 in describing coupling between intramolecular and intermolecular degrees of freedom. For (HF)n(H2O)n experimental results are unavailable. The computed intramolecular frequencies show a strong dependence on cluster size. Intensity features are predicted for future experiments.  相似文献

We report on a study of the photodissociation spectroscopy of weakly bound Zn+(H2O) and Zn+(D2O) complexes. The work is supported by ab initio electronic structure calculations of the ground and low-lying excited energy surfaces. We assign two molecular absorption bands in the near UV correlating to Zn+ (4s-4p)-based transitions, and identify vibrational progressions associated with both intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes of the cluster. Partially resolved rotational structure is consistent with a C(2V) equilibrium complex geometry. Experimental spectroscopic constants are in very good agreement with ab initio theoretical predictions. Results are compared with previous work on main group and transition metal ion-H2O clusters.  相似文献

A semiempirical model for carbon clusters modeling is presented, along with structural and dynamical applications. The model is a tight-binding scheme with additional one- and two-center distance-dependent electrostatic interactions treated self-consistently. This approach, which explicitly accounts for charge relaxation, allows us to treat neutral and (multi-) charged clusters not only at equilibrium but also in dissociative regions. The equilibrium properties, geometries, harmonic spectra, and relative stabilities of the stable isomers of neutral and singly charged clusters in the range n=1-14, for C(20) and C(60), are found to reproduce the results of ab initio calculations. The model is also shown to be successful in describing the stability and fragmentation energies of dictations in the range n=2-10 and allows the determination of their Coulomb barriers, as examplified for the smallest sizes (C(2) (2+),C(3) (2+),C(4) (2+)). We also present time-dependent mean-field and linear response optical spectra for the C(8) and C(60) clusters and discuss their relevance with respect to existing calculations.  相似文献
