Biodegradable, amphiphilic, diblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG), triblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG‐b‐PCL), and star shaped copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether or poly(ethylene glycol) or star poly(ethylene glycol) and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature to yield monomodal polymers of controlled molecular weight. The chemical structure of the copolymers was investigated by 1H and 13C NMR. The formation of block copolymers was confirmed by 13C NMR and DSC investigations. The effects of copolymer composition and molecular structure on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and DSC. For the same PCL chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are viscous whereas in the case of star copolymer solid materials are obtained with low Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Per‐2,3‐acetyl‐β‐cyclodextrin with seven primary hydroxyl groups was synthesized by selective modification and used as multifunctional initiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL). Well‐defined β‐cyclodextrin‐centered seven‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone)s (CDSPCLs) with narrow molecular weight distributions (≤1.15) have been successfully prepared in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 at 120 °C. The molecular weight of CDSPCLs was characterized by end group 1H NMR analyses and size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), which could be well controlled by the molar ratio of the monomer to the initiator. Furthermore, amphiphilic seven‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone‐b‐ethylene glycol)s (CDSPCL‐b‐PEGs) were synthesized by the coupling reaction of CDSPCLs with carboxyl‐terminated mPEGs. 1H NMR and SEC analyses confirmed the expected star block structures. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses suggested that the melting temperature (Tm), the crystallization temperature (Tc), and the crystallinity degree (Xc) of CDSPCLs all increased with the increasing of the molecular weight, and were lower than that of the linear poly(ε‐caprolactone). As for CDSPCL‐b‐PEGs, the Tc and Tm of the PCL blocks were significantly influenced by the PEG segments in the copolymers. Moreover, these amphiphilic star block copolymers could self‐assemble into spherical micelles with the particle size ranging from 10 to 40 nm. Their micellization behaviors were characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined comblike copolymer of poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [(poly(EO‐co‐Gly)] as the main chain and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) as the side chain was successfully prepared by the combination of anionic polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization. The glycidol was protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether (EPEE) first, and then ethylene oxide was copolymerized with EPEE by an anionic mechanism. The EPEE segments of the copolymer were deprotected by formic acid, and the glycidol segments of the copolymers were recovered after saponification. Poly(EO‐co‐Gly) with multihydroxyls was used further to initiate the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of stannous octoate. When the grafted copolymer was mixed with α‐cyclodextrin, crystalline inclusion complexes (ICs) were formed, and the intermediate and final products, poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) and ICs, were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis in detail. The obtained ICs had a channel‐type crystalline structure, and the ratio of ε‐caprolactone units to α‐cyclodextrin for the ICs was higher than 1:1. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photocurable biodegradable multiblock copolymers were synthesized from poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) diol and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) diol with 4,4′‐(adipoyldioxy)dicinnamic acid (CAC) dichloride as a chain extender derived from adipoyl chloride and 4‐hydroxycinnamic acid, and they were characterized with Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile tests. The copolymers were irradiated with a 400‐W high‐pressure mercury lamp from 30 min to 3 h to form a network structure in the absence of photoinitiators. The gel concentration increased with time, and a concentration of approximately 90% was obtained in 90–180 min for all the films. The photocuring hardly affected the crystallinity and melting temperature of the PCL segments but reduced the crystallinity of the PLLA segments. The mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength, modulus, and elongation, were significantly affected by the copolymer compositions and gel concentrations. Shape‐memory properties were determined with cyclic thermomechanical experiments. The CAC/PCL and CAC/PCL/PLLA (75/25) films photocured for 30–120 min showed good shape‐memory properties with strain fixity rates and recovery rates of approximately 100%. The formation of the network structure and the crystallization and melting of the PCL segments played very important roles for the typical shape‐memory properties. Finally, the degradation characteristics of these copolymers were investigated in a phosphate buffer solution at 37 °C with proteinase‐k and Pseudomonas cepacia lipase. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric scaffolds play a crucial role in engineering process of new tissues and effect the cell growth and viability. PLCL copolymers are found to be very useful during cell growth due to their elastic behavior and mechanical strength. Thus, low molecular weight PLCL copolymers of various ratios viz. PLCL(90/10), PLCL(75/25), PLCL(50/50) and PCL were synthesized by ring opening polymerization using stannous octoate as a catalyst. Synthesized polymers were characterized by GPC, 1H‐NMR, FTIR and XRD. The thermal properties of the copolymers were studied using TGA and DSC. Microspheres of about 100 μm diameter were prepared for different copolymers and their in vitro degradation behaviors were studied up to 108 days. It was observed that degradation of PLA content in polymer backbone occurs faster than PCL component which is also indicated by corresponding change in ratios of PLA/PCL, as determined by 1H‐NMR. SEM images of microspheres depicted the surface morphology during degradation and suggested the faster degradation for PLCL (50:50). Copolymers of different thermal, mechanical properties and different degradation behaviors can be prepared by adjusting the composition of copolymers. Various synthesized polymers from this work have been tested in our laboratory as polymeric scaffold for soft tissue engineering. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(trimethylenecarbonate‐ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(p‐dioxanone) copolymers were prepared with varying feed rations by using two step polymerization reactions. Poly(trimethylenecarbonate)(ε‐caprolactone) random copolymer was synthesized with stannous‐2‐ethylhexanoate and followed by adding p‐dioxanone monomer as the other block. The ring opening polymerization was carried out at high temperature and long reaction time to get high molecular weight polymers. The monofilament fibers were obtained using conventional melting spun methods. The copolymers were identified by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The physicochemical properties, such as viscosity, molecular weight, melting point, glass transition temperature, and crystallinity, were studied. The hydrolytic degradation of copolymers was studied in a phosphate buffer solution, pH = 7.2, 37 °C, and a biological absorbable test was performed in rats. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL‐b‐PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL‐b‐PEO copolymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four‐armed PCL were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four‐armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four‐armed block copolymers differed from their starting four‐armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four‐armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content. The micelle formation of the four‐armed block copolymer was examined by a fluorescent probe technique, and the existence of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) confirmed the amphiphilic nature of the resulting copolymer. The cmc value increased with increasing PEO length. The absolute cmc values were higher than those for linear amphiphilic block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method is proposed to access to new poly(α‐amino‐ε‐caprolactone‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) using poly(α‐iodo‐ε‐caprolactone‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) as polymeric substrate. First, ring‐opening (co)polymerizations of α‐iodo‐ε‐caprolactone (αIεCL) with ε‐caprolactone (εCL) are performed using tin 2‐ethylhexanoate (Sn(Oct)2) as catalyst. (Co)polymers are fully characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, SEC, DSC, and TGA. Then, these iodinated polyesters are used as polymeric substrates to access to poly(α‐amino‐ε‐caprolactone‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) by two different strategies. The first one is the reaction of poly(αIεCL‐co‐εCL) with ammonia, the second one is the reduction of poly(αN3εCL‐co‐εCL) by hydrogenolysis. This poly(α‐amino‐ε‐caprolactone‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) (FαNH2εCL < 0.1) opens the way to new cationic and water‐soluble PCL‐based degradable polyesters. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer of ‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) linked with comb‐shaped [poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydeoxyethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)] (PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL) was successfully synthesized by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with ring‐opening anionic polymerization and coordination–insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The α‐methoxy poly(ethylene oxide) (mPEO) with ω,3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanylpropionic acid (BSPA) end group (mPEO‐BSPA) was prepared by the reaction of mPEO with 3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanyl propionic acid chloride (BSPAC), and the reaction efficiency was close to 100%; then the mPEO‐BSPA was used as a macro‐RAFT agent for the copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) using 2,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The molecular weight of copolymer PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) increased with the monomer conversion, but the molecular weight distribution was a little wide. The influence of molecular weight of macro‐RAFT agent on the polymerization procedure was discussed. The ROP of ε‐caprolactone was then completed by initiation of hydroxyl groups of the PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). Thus, the amphiphilic copolymer of linear PEO linked with comb‐like P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL was obtained. The final and intermediate products were characterized in detail by NMR, GPC, and UV. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 467–476, 2006  相似文献

We report the coating of maghemite (γ‐Fe2O3) nanoparticles with poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) through a covalent grafting to technique. ω‐Hydroxy‐PCL was first synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone with aluminum isopropoxide and benzyl alcohol as a catalytic system. The hydroxy end groups of PCL were then derivatized with 3‐isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane in the presence of tetraoctyltin. The triethoxysilane‐functionalized PCL macromolecules were finally allowed to react on the surface of maghemite nanoparticles. The composite nanoparticles were characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Effects of the polymer molar mass and concentration on the amount of polymer grafted to the surface were investigated. Typical grafting densities up to 3 μmol of polymer chains per m2 of maghemite surface were obtained with this grafting to technique. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new functional lactone, α‐iodo‐ε‐caprolactone (αIεCL), was synthesized from ε‐caprolactone by anionic activation using a non‐nucleophilic strong base (lithium diisopropylamide) followed by an electrophilic substitution with iodine chloride. Ring‐opening (co)polymerizations of the resulting monomer with ε‐caprolactone were carried out using tin 2‐ethylhexanoate as a catalyst in toluene at 100 °C. Homopolymerization of αIεCL was achieved, and poly(αIεCL) was fully characterized by SEC, 1H NMR and elemental analysis. Random copolymerizations of αIεCL with εCL were controlled with experimental molecular weights close to the theoretical values, narrow molecular weight distributions and a good agreement between experimental and theoretical molar compositions of αIεCL.

ABA triblock copolymers of L ‐lactide (LL) and ε‐caprolactone (CL), designated as PLL‐P(LL‐co‐CL)‐PLL, were synthesized via a two‐step ring‐opening polymerization in bulk using diethylene glycol and stannous octoate as the initiating system. In the first‐step reaction, an approximately 50:50 mol% P(LL‐co‐CL) random copolymer (prepolymer) was prepared as the middle (B) block. This was then chain extended in the second‐step reaction by terminal block polymerization with more L ‐lactide. The percentage yields of the triblock copolymers were in excess of 95%. The prepolymers and triblock copolymers were characterized using a combination of dilute‐solution viscometry, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the molecular weight of the prepolymer was controlled primarily by the diethylene glycol concentration. All of the triblock copolymers had molecular weights higher than their respective prepolymers. 13C‐NMR analysis confirmed that the prepolymers contained at least some random character and that the triblock copolymers consisted of additional terminal PLL end (A) blocks. From their DSC curves, the triblock copolymers were seen to be semi‐crystalline in morphology. Their glass transition, solid‐state crystallization, and melting temperature ranges, together with their heats of melting, all increased as the PLL end (A) block length increased. Novel amphiphilic A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers composed of 14 poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) arms and 7 poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) arms with β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) as core moiety were synthesized by the combination of controlled ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 14‐Arm star PCL homopolymers (CDSi‐SPCL) were first synthesized by the CROP of CL using per‐6‐(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl)‐β‐CD as the multifunctional initiator in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 at 125 °C. Subsequently, the hydroxyl end groups of CDSi‐SPCL were blocked by acetyl chloride. After desilylation of the tert‐butyldimethylsilyl ether groups from the β‐CD core, 7 ATRP initiating sites were introduced by treating with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, which further initiated ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) to prepare well‐defined A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers [CDS(PCL‐PtBA)]. Their molecular structures and physical properties were in detail characterized by 1H NMR, SEC‐MALLS, and DSC. The selective hydrolysis of tert‐butyl ester groups of the PtBA block gave the amphiphilic A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers [CDS(PCL‐PAA)]. These amphiphilic copolymers could self‐assemble into multimorphological aggregates in aqueous solution, which were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene‐bε‐caprolactone) (PE‐b‐PCL) diblock copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone (CL) with α‐hydroxyl‐ω‐methyl polyethylene (PE‐OH) as a macroinitiator and ammonium decamolybdate (NH4)8[Mo10O34] as a catalyst. Polymerization was conducted in bulk (130–150°C) with high yield (87–97%). Block copolymers with different compositions were obtained and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, MALDI‐TOF, SAXS, and DSC. End‐group analysis by NMR and MALDI‐TOF indicates the formation of α‐hydroxyl‐ω‐methyl PE‐b‐PCL. The PE‐b‐PCL degradation was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and alkaline hydrolysis. The PCL block was hydrolyzed by NaOH (4M), without any effect on the PE segment. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Well‐defined hetero eight‐shaped copolymers composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution were successfully synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization, ATRP, and “click” reaction. The synthetic procedure involves three steps: (1) preparation of a tetrafunctional PS and PCL star copolymer with two PS and two PCL arms using the tetrafunctional initiator bearing two hydroxyl groups and two bromo groups; (2) synthesis of tetrafunctional star copolymer, (α‐acetylene‐PCL)2(ω‐azido‐PS)2, by the transition of terminal hydroxyl and bromo groups to acetylene and azido groups through the reaction with 4‐propargyloxybutanedioyl chloride and NaN3 respectively; (3) intramolecular cyclization reaction to produce the hetero eight‐shaped copolymers using “click” chemistry under high dilution. The 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography techniques were applied to characterize the chemical structures of the resulted intermediates and the target polymers. Their thermal behavior was investigated by DSC, and their crystallization behaviors of PCL were studied by polarized optical microscopy. The decrease in chain mobility of the eight‐shaped copolymers restricts the crystallization of PCL and the crystallization rate of PCL is slower in comparison with their corresponding star precursors. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave irradiation was applied to synthesize poly(ε‐caprolactam‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) directly from the anionic catalyzed ring opening of two cyclic monomers, ε‐caprolactam and ε‐caprolactone using a variable frequency microwave furnace, programmed to a set temperature and controlled by a pulsed power on–off system. Dielectric properties of ε‐caprolactam, ε‐caprolactone, and their mixture were measured in the microwave range from 0.4 to 3 GHz, showing that both ε‐caprolactam and ε‐caprolactone exhibited effective absorption of microwave energy to induce a fast chemical reaction. The microwave induced anionic copolymerization of ε‐caprolactam and ε‐caprolactone generated copoly(amide‐ester)s in yields as high as 70%. Conventional thermal and microwave copolymerization studies were also conducted for comparison with the microwave results. These studies demonstrated that an effective and efficient microwave method to copolymerize ε‐caprolactam with ε‐caprolactone in higher yield, higher amide content, and higher Tg 's, relative to the thermal process, has been developed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel calixarene‐centered amphiphilic A2B2 miktoarm star copolymers composed of two PCL arms and two PEG arms with calix[4]arene as core moiety were synthesized by the combination of CROP and “click” chemistry. First, a heterotetrafunctional calix[4]arene derivative with two hydroxyl groups and two alkyne groups was designed as a macroinitiator to prepare calixarene‐centered PCL homopolymers (C4‐PCL) by CROP in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst at 110 °C. Next, azide‐terminated PEG (A‐PEG) was synthesized by tandem treating methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)s (mPEG) with 4‐chlorobutyryl chloride and NaN3. Finally, copper(I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between C4‐PCL and A‐PEG led to A2B2 miktoarm star copolymer [C4S(PCL)2‐(PEG)2]. 1H NMR, FT‐IR, and SEC analyses confirmed the well‐defined miktoarm star architecture. These amphiphilic miktoarm star copolymers could self‐assemble into multimorphological aggregates in water. The calix[4]arene moieties with a cavity <1 nm on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface of these aggregates may provide potential opportunities to entrap guest molecules for special applications in supermolecular science. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The synthesis of star shaped poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with a fullerene molecular core (s‐PCLF) was successfully achieved by the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone with fullerenol as the initiator. Through NMR and GPC analysis, the average number of arms of PCL on each fullerene core was estimated to be 2–3.

Well‐defined drug‐conjugated amphiphilic A2B2 miktoarm star copolymers [(PCL)2‐(PEG)2‐D] were prepared by the combination of controlled ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) and “click” reaction strategy. First, bromide functionalized poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐Br) with double hydroxyl end groups was synthesized by the CROP of ε‐caprolactone using 2,2‐bis(bromomethyl)propane‐1,3‐diol as a difunctional initiator in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 at 110 °C. Next, the bromide groups of PCL‐Br were quantitatively converted to azide form by NaN3 to give PCL‐N3. Subsequently, the end hydroxyl groups of PCL‐N3 were capped with ibuprofen as a model drug at room temperature. Finally, copper(I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between ibuprofen‐conjugated PCL‐N3 and slightly excess alkyne‐terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (A‐PEG) led to ibuprofen‐conjugated A2B2 miktoarm star copolymer [(PCL)2‐(PEG)2‐D]. The excess A‐PEG was removed by dialysis. 1H NMR, FTIR and SEC analyzes confirmed the expected miktoarm star architecture. These amphiphilic miktoarm star copolymers could self‐assemble into multimorphological aggregates in aqueous solution, which were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the drug‐loading capacity of these drug‐conjugated miktoarm star copolymers as well as their nondrug‐conjugated analogs were also investigated in detail. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The quasi‐living cationic copolymerization of 3,3‐bis(chloromethyl)oxetane (BCMO) and ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL), using boron trifluoride etherate as catalyst and 1,4‐butanediol as coinitiator, was investigated in methylene chloride at 0°C. The resulting hydroxyl‐ended copolymers exhibit a narrow molecular weight polydispersity and a functionality of about 2. The reactivity ratios of BCMO (0.26) and ε‐CL (0.47), and the Tg of the copolymers, indicate their statistical character. The synthesis of poly(3,3‐bis(azidomethyl)oxetane‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) from poly(BCMO‐co‐ε‐CL) via the substitution of the chlorine atoms by azide groups, using sodium azide in DMSO at 110°C, occurs without any degradation, but the copolymers decompose at about 240°C. All polymers were characterized by vapor pressure osmometry or steric exclusion chromatography, 1H‐NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, and DSC. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
