Two chiral amphiphilic diblock copolymers with different relative lengths of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks, poly(6‐O‐p‐vinylbenzyl‐1,2:3,4‐Di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐galactopyranose)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) or poly(VBCPG)‐b‐poly(NIPAAM) and poly(20‐(hydroxymethyl)‐pregna‐1,4‐dien‐3‐one methacrylate)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) or poly(MAC‐HPD)‐b‐poly(NIPAAM) were synthesized via consecutive reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer polymerizations of VBCPG or MAC‐HPD and NIPAAM. The chemical structures of these diblock copolymers were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These amphiphilic diblock copolymers could self‐assemble into micelles in aqueous solution, and the morphologies of micelles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. By comparison with the lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) of poly(NIPAAM) homopolymer in deionized water (32 °C), a higher LCST of the chiral amphiphilic diblock copolymer (poly(VBCPG)‐b‐poly(NIPAAM)) was observed and the LCST increased with the relative length of the poly(VBCPG) block in the copolymer from 35 to 47 °C, respectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined copolymer of acrylonitrile (AN) and maleic anhydride (MAn) has been successfully synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The polymerization kinetics and “living”/controlled features were thoroughly studied and confirmed. The thermal properties and spinnability of the prepared copolymers were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyzer, and electrospinning subsequently. When PAN‐co‐PMAn was used as precursors, nonwoven with “crosslinked” structures was obtained during electrospinning. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The (controlled) free‐radical copolymerization of maleic anhydride and styrene or derivatives thereof is often thought to provide nearly perfect alternating copolymers. Here, the RAFT copolymerization of electron‐rich styrene derivatives with maleic anhydride is reported. This copolymerization shows distinct penultimate effects, resulting in polymers with increased incorporation of styrene monomers, that is, where a tendency toward periodic (S‐S‐MA) copolymers exists. This work could be a first step towards periodic copolymers based on maleic anhydride and styrene derivatives. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The dispersion reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine in toluene in the presence of the polystyrene dithiobenzoate (PS‐CTA) macro‐RAFT agent with different chain length is discussed. The RAFT polymerization undergoes an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous one. The RAFT polymerization rate is dependent on the PS‐CTA chain length, and short PS‐CTA generally leads to fast RAFT polymerization. The dispersion RAFT polymerization induces the self‐assembly of the in situ synthesized polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) block copolymer into highly concentrated block copolymer nano‐objects. The PS‐CTA chain length exerts great influence on the particle nucleation and the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects. It is found, short PS‐CTA leads to fast particle nucleation and tends to produce large‐sized vesicles or large‐compound micelles, and long PS‐CTA leads to formation of small‐sized nanospheres. Comparison between the polymerization‐induced self‐assembly and self‐assembly of block copolymer in the block‐selective solvent is made, and the great difference between the two methods is demonstrated. The present study is anticipated to be useful to reveal the chain extension and the particle growth of block copolymer during the RAFT polymerization under dispersion condition. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dibenzyltrithiocarbonate‐mediated RAFT polymerization of dimethyl‐p‐vinylbenzylphosphonate and its copolymerization with styrene are studied in order to access well‐defined statistical and block copolymers containing controlled amounts of dimethylphosphonate groups. NMR and SEC analysis of the (co)polymers confirm the controlled character of the polymerizations. ABA triblock copolymers are treated with TMSiBr/MeOH in order to transform the dimethylphosphonate groups into phosphonic acids while keeping the midchain trithiocarbonate group and triblock nature unaffected. Alternatively, the combination of trithiocarbonate aminolysis with TMSiBr/MeOH treatment of the same triblock copolymers leads to phosphonic acid‐functional diblock copolymer counterparts. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the first instance of facile synthesis of dumbbell‐shaped dendritic‐linear‐dendritic triblock copolymer, [G‐3]‐PNIPAM‐[G‐3], consisting of third generation poly(benzyl ether) monodendrons ([G‐3]) and linear poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The key step was the preparation of novel [G‐3]‐based RAFT agent, [G‐3]‐CH2SCSSCH2‐[G‐3] (1), from third‐generation dendritic poly(benzyl ether) bromide, [G‐3]‐CH2Br. Due to the bulky nature of [G‐3]‐CH2Br, its transformation into trithiocarbonate 1 cannot go to completion, a mixture containing ~80 mol % of 1 and 20 mol % [G‐3]‐CH2Br was obtained. Dumbbell‐shaped [G‐3]‐PNIPAM310‐[G‐3] triblock copolymer was then successfully obtained by the RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacylamide (NIPAM) using 1 as the mediating agent, and trace amount of unreacted [G‐3]‐CH2Br was conveniently removed during purification by precipitating the polymer into diethyl ether. The dendritic‐linear‐dendritic triblock structure was further confirmed by aminolysis, and fully characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H‐NMR. The amphiphilic dumbbell‐shaped triblock copolymer contains a thermoresponsive PNIPAM middle block, in aqueous solution it self‐assembles into spherical nanoparticles with the core consisting of hydrophobic [G‐3] dendritic block and stabilized by the PNIPAM central block, forming loops surrounding the insoluble core. The micellar properties of [G‐3]‐PNIPAM310‐[G‐3] were then fully characterized. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 1432–1445, 2007  相似文献

In the reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of two monomers, even with the simple terminal model, there are two kinds of macroradical and two kinds of polymeric RAFT agent with different R groups. Because the structure of the R group could exert a significant influence on the RAFT process, RAFT copolymerization may behave differently from RAFT homopolymerization. The RAFT copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) in miniemulsion was investigated. The performance of the RAFT copolymerization of MMA/St in miniemulsion was found to be dependent on the feed monomer compositions. When St is dominant in the feed monomer composition, RAFT copolymerization is well controlled in the whole range of monomer conversion. However, when MMA is dominant, RAFT copolymerization may be, in some cases, out of control in the late stage of copolymerization, and characterized by a fast increase in the polydispersity index (PDI). The RAFT process was found to have little influence on composition evolution during copolymerization. The synthesis of the well‐defined gradient copolymers and poly[St‐b‐(St‐co‐MMA)] block copolymer by RAFT miniemulsion copolymerization was also demonstrated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A three‐step process, combining nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization techniques, for synthesizing well‐defined amphiphilic and thermosensitive graft copolymers with fluorescence poly(styrene‐co‐(p‐chloromethylstyrene))‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (P(St‐co‐(p‐CMS))‐g‐PNIPAAM), was conducted. Firstly, the NMP of styrene (St) and p‐chloromethylstyrene (p‐CMS) were carried out using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as the initiator to obtain the random copolymers of P(St‐co‐(p‐CMS)). Secondly, the random copolymers were converted into macro‐RAFT agents with fluorescent carbazole as Z‐group through a simple method. Then the macro‐RAFT agents were used in the RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM) to prepare fluorescent amphiphilic graft copolymers P(St‐co‐(p‐CMS))‐g‐PNIPAAM with controlled molecular weights and well‐defined structures. The copolymers obtained were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The size of self‐assembly micelles of the resulting graft copolymers in deionized water was studied by high performance particle sizer (HPPS), the results showed that the Z‐average size of the micelles increased with the increase of molecular weights of PNIPAAM in side chains. The aqueous solution of the micelles prepared from P(St‐co‐(p‐CMS))‐g‐PNIPAAM using a dialysis method showed a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at ~ 27.5 °C, which was below the value of NIPAAM homopolymer (32 °C). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The design and synthesis of a new hydrophobic monomer, that is, 4‐(tert‐butyl)phenyl 6‐acrylamidohexanoate (TBP‐AA‐HO) and its ability to form supramolecular host/guest complexes with β‐cyclodextrin (CD) is described. The aqueous CD‐mediated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization affords molecular masses up to 8600 g mol?1 with polydispersities between 1.2 and 1.4. The surprisingly low molecular weights for higher monomer/chain transfer agent (CTA) ratios are investigated by comparing results obtained from free radical and RAFT radical polymerization in aqueous and organic media. The results indicate a steric hindrance caused by attached CD molecules on the growing polymer chain leading to stagnation of the polymerization process due to a restricted accessibility of the reactive chain end. This hypothesis is supported by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the CD‐mediated synthesis of amphiphilic diblock copolymers in variable aqueous media is described. Hydrophilic poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) macro‐CTAs with different molecular weights are used to polymerize TBP‐AA‐HO at 50 °C. The diblock copolymers are analyzed by 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. The results confirm the polymer structure and reveal similar limitations of chain growth as observed for the CD‐mediated homopolymerization with a limit of 7000 g mol?1 for efficient chain extension. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly of block copolymer through dispersion RAFT polymerization has been demonstrated to be a valid method to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. However, volatile solvents are generally involved in this preparation. Herein, the in situ synthesis of block copolymer nano‐objects of poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐polystyrene (PEG‐b‐PS) in the ionic liquid of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIN][PF6]) through the macro‐RAFT agent mediated dispersion polymerization is investigated. It is found that the dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the ionic liquid of [BMIN][PF6] runs faster than that in the alcoholic solvent, and the dispersion RAFT polymerization in the ionic liquid affords good control over the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer. The morphology of the in situ synthesized PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer nano‐objects, e.g., nanospheres and vesicles, in the ionic liquid is dependent on the polymerization degree of the solvophobic block and the concentration of the fed monomer, which is somewhat similar to those in alcoholic solvent. It is anticipated that the dispersion RAFT polymerization in ionic liquid broads a new way to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Monoalkynyl‐functionalized fullerene was precisely synthesized starting with pristine fullerene (C60) and characterized by multiple techniques. Methyl methacrylate and 6‐azido hexyl methacrylate were then randomly copolymerized via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization to build polymer backbones with well‐controlled molecular weights and copolymer compositions. Finally, these two moieties were covalently assembled into a series of well‐defined side chain fullerene polymers (SFPs) via the copper‐mediated click reaction which was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. The fullerene loadings of the resultant polymers were estimated by thermogravimetric analysis and UV–vis spectroscopy, demonstrating consistent and high conversions in most of the samples. The morphology studies of the SFPs were performed both in solution and on solid substrates. Very intriguing self‐aggregation behaviors were detected by both gel permeation chromatography and dynamic light scattering analyses. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopic images of these polymers showed the formation of various supramolecular nanoparticle assemblies and crystalline‐like clusters depending on the fullerene contents and polymer chain lengths. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophobic polyisobutylene (PIB) and hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) segments was synthesized via the combination of living carbocationic polymerization and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene followed by end‐capping with 1,3‐butadiene was first performed at ?70 °C to give a well‐defined allyl‐Cl‐terminated PIB with a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn =1.29). This end‐functionalized PIB was further converted to a macromolecular chain transfer agent for mediating RAFT block copolymerization of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate at 60 °C in tetrahydrofuran to afford the target well‐defined PIB‐b‐PDEAEMA diblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤1.22). The self‐assembly behavior of these amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope, and furthermore, their pH‐responsive behavior was studied by UV‐vis and dynamic light scattering. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three new ureidopyrimidinone(UPy)‐functionalized chain‐transfer agents (CTAs) have been synthesized for use in reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. These UPy‐CTAs are able to polymerize a wide variety of vinyl monomers to yield UPy‐functionalized polymers, including homopolymers, block copolymers, and amphiphilic block copolymers. These polymers have been characterized via 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), UV/visible spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to demonstrate end‐group fidelity. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel POSS‐containing methacrylate monomer (HEMAPOSS) was fabricated by extending the side chain between polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) unit and methacrylate group, which can efficiently decrease the steric hindrance in free‐radical polymerization of POSS‐methacrylate monomer. POSS‐containing homopolymers (PHEMAPOSS) with a higher degree of polymerization (DP) can be prepared using HEMAPOSS monomer via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PHEMAPOSS was further used as the macro‐RAFT agent to construct a series of amphiphilic POSS‐containing poly(N, N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers, PHEMAPOSS‐b‐PDMAEMA. PHEMAPOSS‐b‐PDMAEMA block copolymers can self‐assemble into a plethora of morphologies ranging from irregular assembled aggregates to core‐shell spheres and further from complex spheres (pearl‐necklace‐liked structure) to large compound vesicles. The thermo‐ and pH‐responsive behaviors of the micelles were also investigated by dynamic laser scattering, UV spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM. The results reveal the reversible transition of the assembled morphologies from spherical micelles to complex micelles was realized through acid‐base control. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The feasibility of the radical copolymerization of β‐pinene and acrylonitrile was clarified for the first time. The monomer reactivity ratios evaluated by the Fineman–Ross method were rβ‐pinene = 0 and racrylonitrile = 0.66 in dichloroethane at 60 °C with AIBN, which indicated that the copolymerization was a simple alternating copolymerization. The addition of the Lewis acid Et2AlCl increased the copolymerization rate and enhanced the incorporation of β‐pinene. The first example for the synthesis of an almost perfectly alternating copolymer of β‐pinene and acrylonitrile was achieved in the presence of Et2AlCl. Furthermore, the possible controlled copolymerization of β‐pinene and acrylonitrile was then attempted via the reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) technique. At a low β‐pinene/acrylonitrile feed ratio of 10/90 or 25/75, the copolymerization with 2‐cyanopropyl‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate as the transfer agent displayed the typical features of living polymerization. However, the living character could be observed only within certain monomer conversions. At higher monomer conversions, the copolymerizations deviated from the living behavior, probably because of the competitive degradative chain transfer of β‐pinene. The β‐pinene/acrylonitrile copolymers with a high alternation degree and controlled molecular weight were also obtained by the combination of the RAFT agent cumyl dithiobenzoate and Lewis acid Et2AlCl. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The micellar macro‐RAFT agent‐mediated dispersion polymerization of styrene in the methanol/water mixture is performed and synthesis of temperature‐sensitive ABC triblock copolymer nanoparticles is investigated. The thermoresponsive diblock copolymer of poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐block‐poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐diethylamine] trithiocarbonate forms micelles in the polymerization solvent at the polymerization temperature and, therefore, the dispersion RAFT polymerization undergoes as similarly as seeded dispersion polymerization with accelerated polymerization rate. With the progress of the RAFT polymerization, the molecular weight of the synthesized triblock copolymer of poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐block‐poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐diethylamine]‐b‐polystyrene linearly increases with the monomer conversion, and the PDI values of the triblock copolymers are below 1.2. The dispersion RAFT polymerization affords the in situ synthesis of the triblock copolymer nanoparticles, and the mean diameter of the triblock copolymer nanoparticles increases with the polymerization degree of the polystyrene block. The triblock copolymer nanoparticles contain a central thermoresponsive poly [N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐diethylamine] block, and the soluble‐to‐insoluble ‐‐transition temperature is dependent on the methanol content in the methanol/water mixture. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four families of hyperbranched amphiphilic block copolymers of styrene (Sty, less polar monomer) and 2‐vinylpyridine (2VPy, one of the two more polar monomers) or 4‐vinylpyridine (4VPy, the other polar monomer) were prepared via self‐condensing vinyl reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (SCVP‐RAFT). Two families contained 4VPy as the more polar monomer, one of which possessing a Sty‐b‐4VPy architecture, and the other possessing the reverse block architecture. The other two families bore 2VPy as the more polar monomer and had either a 2VPy‐b‐Sty or a Sty‐b‐2VPy architecture. Characterization of the hyperbranched block copolymers in terms of their molecular weights and compositions indicated better control when the VPy monomers were polymerized first. Control over the molecular weights of the hyperbranched copolymers was also confirmed with the aminolysis of the dithioester moiety at the branching points to produce linear polymers with number‐average molecular weights slightly greater than the theoretically expected ones, due to recombination of the resulting thiol‐terminated linear polymers. The amphiphilicity of the hyperbranched copolymers led to their self‐assembly in selective solvents, which was probed using atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering, which indicated the formation of large spherical micelles of uniform diameter. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the synthesis and characterization of novel amphiphilic diblock copolymers of poly(2‐dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(lauryl methacrylate), PDMAEMA‐b‐PLMA, using the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique, are reported. The diblocks were successfully derivatized to cationic and zwitterionic block polyelectrolytes by quaternization and sulfobetainization of the PDMAEMA block, respectively. Furthermore, their molecular and physicochemical characterization was performed by using characterization techniques such as NMR and FTIR, size exclusion chromatography, light scattering techniques, and transmission electron microscopy. The structure of the diblock micelles, their behavior, and properties in aqueous solution were investigated under the effect of pH, temperature, and ionic strength, as PDMAEMA and its derivatives are stimuli‐responsive polymers and exhibit responses to variations of at least one of these physicochemical parameters. These new families of stimuli‐responsive block copolymers respond to changes of their environment giving interesting nanostructures, behavioral motifs, and properties, rendering them useful as nanocarriers for drug delivery and gene therapy. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Double hydrophilic diblock copolymer, poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐3‐azidopropylacrylamide) (PDMA‐b‐P(NIPAM‐co‐AzPAM), containing azide moieties in one of the blocks was synthesized via consecutive reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The obtained diblock copolymer molecularly dissolves in aqueous solution at room temperature, and can further supramolecularly self‐assemble into core‐shell nanoparticles consisting of thermoresponsive P(NIPAM‐co‐AzPAM) cores and water‐soluble PDMA coronas above the lower critical solution temperature of P(NIPAM‐co‐AzPAM) block. As the micelle cores contain reactive azide residues, core crosslinking can be facilely achieved upon addition of difunctional propargyl ether via click chemistry. In an alternate approach in which the PDMA‐b‐P(NIPAM‐co‐AzPAM) diblock copolymer was dissolved in a common organic solvent (DMF), the core‐crosslinked (CCL) micelles can be fabricated via “click” crosslinking upon addition of propargyl ether and subsequent dialysis against water. CCL micelles prepared by the latter approach typically possess larger sizes and broader size distributions, compared with that obtained by the former one. In both cases, the obtained (CCL) micelles possess thermoresponsive cores, and the swelling/shrinking of which can be finely tuned with temperature, rendering them as excellent candidates as intelligent drug nanocarriers. Because of the high efficiency and quite mild conditions of click reactions, we expect that this strategy can be generalized for the structural fixation of other self‐assembled nanostructures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate the ability of the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process to produce well‐defined block co‐oligomers for which each block has a narrow molecular weight distribution and degrees of polymerization ranging from 2 to 33. We exploit RAFT versatility to control the structure of the co‐oligomers and produce amphiphilic block co‐oligomers of styrene, acrylic acid and ethylene glycol. A detailed study shows that the amphiphilic diblock co‐oligomers self‐assemble in solution and form micelles or particles, depending on the hydrophobicity of the diblock. These oligomers present an excellent alternative to traditional amphiphilic molecules, by combining the properties of polymers with those of single molecule surfactants. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
