The development of iron complexes for the photoredox catalysis is a huge challenge. Indeed, Iron complexes can be ideal candidates due to their potential visible light absorption and redox properties but also because they are less toxic, inexpensive and environmentally friendly compared to other catalysts. In the present paper, a series of novel iron complexes have been synthesized and utilized to initiate the free radical promoted cationic polymerization of epoxides or the free radical polymerization of acrylates through photoredox catalysis processes upon exposure to near UV (385 nm) or visible violet (405 nm) light emitting diodes (LEDs). When combined with an iodonium salt and N‐vinylcarbazole, the iron complex‐based photoinitiating systems are able to generate radicals, cations, and radical cations. The initiation efficiency is investigated through real‐time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and a satisfactory initiating ability is found. The mechanisms for the generation of the reactive initiating species through photoredox catalysis are studied by different methods (steady state photolysis, cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance spin trapping techniques) and discussed in detail. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The utilization of visible lights for the fabrication of polymeric materials is recognized as a promising and environmentally friendly approach. This process relies on the photochemical generation of reactive species (e.g., radicals, radical cations, or cations) from well‐designed photoinitiators (PIs) or photoinitiating systems (PISs) to initiate the polymerization reactions of different monomers (acrylates, methacrylates, epoxides, and vinyl ethers). In spite of the fact that metal complexes such as ruthenium‐ or iridium‐based complexes have found applications in organic and polymer synthesis, the search of other low‐cost metal‐based complexes as PISs is emerging and attracting increasing attentions. Particularly, the concept of the photoredox catalysis has appeared recently as a unique tool for polymer synthesis upon soft conditions (use of light emitting diodes and household lamp). This highlight focuses on recently designed copper and iron complexes as PI catalysts in the application of photoinduced polymerizations (radical, cationic, interpenetrated polymer networks, and thiol‐ene) or controlled radical polymerization under visible light irradiation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The cations and radicals produced in aminothiazonaphthalic anhydride derivatives (ATNAs) combined with an iodonium salt, N‐vinylcarbazole, amine, or chloro triazine initiate the ring‐opening cationic polymerization of epoxides and the free radical polymerization of acrylates under LEDs at 405 or 455 nm. The photoinitiating ability of these novel photoinitiating systems is higher than that of the well‐known camphorquinone‐based systems. An example of the high reactivity of the new proposed photoinitiator is also provided in resins for 3D‐printing using a LED projector@405 nm. The chemical mechanisms are investigated by steady‐state photolysis, cyclic voltammetry, fluorescence, laser flash photolysis, and electron spin resonance spin‐trapping techniques. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports on the presumably first use of iron complexes (FeC) as potential photocatalysts for controlled radical photopolymerization reactions (CRP2). Three compounds were designed and investigated. Good linear evolutions of the molecular weight (Mn) with the conversion were observed. A comparison was provided with a reference iridium (III) complex [Ir(ppy)3 where ppy stands for 2‐phenylpyridine]. The on/off photopolymerization experiments highlight the presence of dormant species and a re‐initiation on demand upon irradiation. This unique re‐initiation property was used for the modification of surfaces (hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties) and surface patterning as well as the synthesis of a block co‐polymer (PMMA‐b‐PBA). A comparative analysis of the behavior of these iron complexes in thermally and photochemically activated polymerization was provided. The chemical mechanisms were studied by steady state photolysis, laser flash photolysis, cyclic voltammetry, luminescence quenching, and electron spin resonance experiments. A catalytic cycle was proposed with two steps: (i) the oxidation of the FeC excited state by an alkyl halide and (ii) the reduction by the oxidized form (FeC°+) by an amine or the macroradicals leading to the regeneration of the catalyst. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four novel onium salts (onium‐polyoxometalate) have been synthesized and characterized. They contain a diphenyliodonium or a thianthrenium (TH) moiety and a polyoxomolybdate or a polyoxotungstate as new counter anions. Outstandingly, these counter anions are photochemically active and can sensitize the decomposition of the iodonium or TH moiety through an intramolecular electron transfer. The phenyl radicals generated upon UV light irradiation (Xe–Hg lamp) are very efficient to initiate the radical polymerization of acrylates. Cations are also generated for the cationic polymerization of epoxides. Remarkably, these novel iodonium and TH salts are characterized by a higher reactivity compared with that of the diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate and the commercial TH salt, respectively. Interpenetrating polymer networks can also be obtained under air through a concomitant cationic/radical photopolymerization of an epoxy/acrylate blend (monomer conversions > 65%). The photochemical mechanisms are studied by steady‐state photolysis, cyclic voltammetry, and electron spin resonance techniques. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The interaction of iodonium, sulphonium, phosphonium, arsonium, selenonium, and heterocyclic nitrogen salts with the excited triplet state of 2-chlorothioxanthone (CTX) has been studied through time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Bimolecular quenching rate constants (ke) have been measured for the first time. Measuring of the rate constants (kq) of the quenching reaction by monomers permits the calculation of charge transfer (øCT) quantum yields. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Diaryliodonium salts spontaneously form crystalline 1:1 supramolecular complexes at room temperature in good to excellent yields with 18‐crown‐6 ether and its cyclohexano‐ and benzo‐substituted analogs. The complexes were characterized using IR, UV, MS, 1H, and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy and by single crystal X‐ray crystallography. The analytical data obtained were consistent with a structure in which the positively charged iodine atom of diaryliodonium cation is positioned above and over the center of the crown ether ring with the positively charged iodine atom coordinated to the crown ether oxygen atoms. The diaryliodonium salt‐crown ether complexes are photosensitive and were used to carry out the photoinitiated cationic polymerizations of a number of mono‐ and difunctional monomers. During irradiation with UV light, the supramolecular complexes undergo photolysis with the generation of a Brønsted acid and with the concomitant release of the crown ether. When used as photoinitiators, the crown ether that is released markedly influences the kinetics of the subsequent cationic polymerization of the monomer. Further studies demonstrated that the photolysis of diaryliodonium salt‐crown ether supramolecular complexes can be photosensitized using typical‐electron transfer photosensitizers. Free radical‐promoted photosensitization using typical unimolecular free radical photoinitiators such as 2,2‐dimethoxy‐2‐phenylacetophenone also takes place readily. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acridone as a new kind of visible light photocatalyst has been developed to catalyze metal free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The photocatalyst possess low excited state potential as can undergo an oxidative quenching pathway to initiate ATRP of vinyl monomers. Kinetic study and light on/off reaction demonstrate the “living”/controlled nature of the polymerization by light. Block copolymers can be achieved by using PMMA as macroinitiator to reinitiate polymerization of other vinyl monomers, which shows highly preserved Br chain-end functionality in the synthesized polymers. Moreover, the polymerization can be conducted under air atmosphere as most photocatalysts need anaerobic condition, which may give inspiration of further application of this kind of photocatalyst.  相似文献

The free radical promoted cationic polymerization cyclohexene oxide (CHO), was achieved by visible light irradiation (λinc = 430–490 nm) of methylene chloride solutions containing thioxanthone‐fluorene carboxylic acid (TX‐FLCOOH) or thioxanthone‐carbazole (TX‐C) and cationic salts, such as diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (Ph2I+PF) or silver hexafluorophosphate (Ag+PF) in the presence of hydrogen donors. A feasible initiation mechanism involves the photogeneration of ketyl radicals by hydrogen abstraction in the first step. Subsequent oxidation of ketyl radicals by the oxidizing salts yields Bronsted acids capable of initiating the polymerization of CHO. In agreement with the proposed mechanism, the polymerization was completely inhibited by 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy and di‐2,6‐di‐tert‐butylpyridine as radical and acid scavengers, respectively. Additionally polymerization efficiency was directly related to the reduction potential of the cationic salts, that is, Ag+PF (E = +0.8 V) was found to be more efficient than Ph2I+PF (E = ?0.2 V). In addition to CHO, vinyl monomers such as isobutyl vinyl ether and N‐vinyl carbazole, and a bisepoxide such as 3,4‐epoxycyclohexyl‐3′,4′‐epoxycyclohexene carboxylate, were polymerized in the presence of TX‐FLCOOH or TX‐C and iodonium salt with high efficiency. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, novel azahelicenes (AZs) were synthesized and proposed as high performance visible light photoinitiators for both the free radical polymerization of acrylates and the cationic polymerization (CP) of epoxides upon visible light exposure using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) @405, @455, and @470 nm. Excellent polymerization initiating abilities are found and high final conversions were obtained. Remarkably, an exceptional long lifetime photoluminescence property of the polymer films was observed when synthesized in presence of AZs. A full picture of the involved chemical mechanisms is given. AZs being high performance photoinitiators, their use in new cationic LED 3D printing resins will be also presented, that is, the cationic process upon LED projector @405 nm can be useful to reduce the shrinkage usually observed for radical polymerization. LED projector printing is very interesting compared to laser writing as this technology projects the profile of an entire layer of a 3D object at one time. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Two one‐component, double‐chromophoric thioxanthone photoinitiators, namely TX‐EDA and TX‐DETA were synthesized by the reaction of thioxanthone aldehyde (TX‐A) with ethylenediamine (EDA) and diethylenetriamine (DETA), respectively via a facile Schiff base reaction. Both photoinitiators were characterized by spectral analysis and photobleaching studies. DFT calculations are employed to reveal the contribution of the different orbitals to the excitation of the initiators. The double‐chromophoric nature of the initiators gives rise to an increased absorption in the near UV region when compared with the pristine TX‐A. Photoinitiated polymerization of various vinyl monomers with TX‐EDA and TX‐DETA has been investigated in the presence and absence of a co‐initiator and compared for formulations consisting of precursor TX‐A. In addition, real‐time FTIR spectroscopic studies were performed in methyl methacrylate polymerization with both initiators. The higher efficiency observed with TX‐DETA may be attributed to the additional hydrogen donating sites adjacent to nitrogen atoms. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Herein, thirteen ketone derivatives composed of different cyclohexanone cores and peripheral moieties are designed, among which 10 ketones have never been synthesized before. These ketones are proposed as high-performance photoinitiators for both free radical polymerizations and cationic polymerizations under soft conditions (visible LED@405 nm irradiation at room temperature). In combination with an amine and an iodonium salt (Iod), these ketones could be used in three−component photoinitiating systems to initiate the free radical polymerization of acrylates with distinct final conversions, among which the ketone−1/amine/Iod combination proved to be the most efficient one. Besides, the ketone−1/Iod two−component system also showed a remarkable photoinitiation ability for the cationic polymerization of epoxides. The photochemical sensitivity of ketone−1 in the presence of an amine and an iodonium salt was systematically investigated by steady state photolysis and excited state fluorescence quenching characterizations, respectively. Interestingly, macroscopic 3D patterns with excellent spatial resolution could be generated using the ketone−1/amine/Iod photoinitiating system for the free radical polymerization of acrylates. This high performance is also found useful to overcome the light penetration issue for the access to filled samples (silica) and the preparation of composites.  相似文献

An efficient strategy for comprehensive utilization of the conjugated sulfonium salt photoacid generator (PAG), namely, 3‐{4‐[4‐(4‐N,N′‐diphenylamino)‐styryl]phenyl}phenyl dimethyl sulfonium hexafluoroantimonate, was developed through photoinitiated cationic photopolymerization (CP) of epoxides and vinyl ether upon exposure to near‐UV and visible light‐emitting diodes (LEDs; e.g., 365, 385, 405, and 425 nm). Photochemical mechanisms were investigated by UV–vis spectra, molecular orbital calculations, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, and electron spin resonance spin‐trapping analyses. Compared with commercial PAGs, the prepared conjugated sulfonium salt generated H+, which can be used as photoinitiator. Moreover, the fluorescent byproducts from photodecomposition can be used as photosensitizer of commercial iodonium salt in the photoinitiating systems of CP. These novel D‐π‐A type sulfonium‐based photoinitiating systems are efficient (epoxide conversion = 85–90% and vinyl conversion >90%; LEDs upon exposure to 365–425 nm) even in low‐concentration initiators (1%, w/w) and low curing light intensities (10–40 mW cm?2). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The behavior of the nonconjugated aminated benzophenones—4-[2′-N,N-(diethylamino)ethoxy]benzophenone (E4), 2-[2′-N,N-(diethylamino)ethoxy]-4-methoxybenzophenone (E2), and 4-N,N-dimethylaminomethylbenzophenone (DM)—as photoinitiators of MMA polymerization has been studied and the results compared with those obtained with the conjugated aminobenzophenone 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-isopropyl-benzophenone (CU—MI). Photoreduction behavior of these compounds in various solvents in the presence and absence of MMA has been also examined. The order of the polymerization reaction with respect to monomer and initiator concentrations has been investigated; values of initiation quantum yield (Φi), Kp/K1/2t and efficiencies of the different radicals have also been determined. Similar polymerization rates (Rp) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) were found when E4 and CU-MI were used as photoinitiators under the same range of absorbed irradiation intensity. This fact results from a compensation between the higher rate of E4 radical production (n-π* transition type) and the greater reactivity of the radicals generated from CU-MI.  相似文献

Novel pyridinium salts [N‐(α‐phenylbenzyl)‐, N‐(1‐naphthylmethyl)‐, or N‐cinnamyl p‐ or o‐cyanopyridinium hexafluoroantimonates] were synthesized by the reaction of p‐ or o‐cyanopyridine and the corresponding bromides followed by anion exchange with KSbF6. These pyridinium salts polymerized epoxy monomers at lower temperatures than previously reported for N‐benzyl‐2‐cyanopyridinium hexafluoroantimonate. The o‐substituted pyridinium salts showed higher activity than the p‐substituted ones, and the crosslinked epoxy polymers cured with these initiators showed higher glass‐transition temperatures. These pyridinium salts photoinitiated radical polymerization as well as cationic polymerization. The photopolymerization was accelerated by the addition of aromatic ketones as photosensitizers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1037–1046, 2002  相似文献

The photoinitiation abilities of three 1,2-diketones [i.e., acenaphthenequinone ( ANPQ ), aceanthrenequinone ( AATQ ), and 9,10-phenanthrenequinone ( PANQ )]-based photoinitiating systems [PISs, with additives such as iodonium salt, N-vinylcarbazole (NVK), tertiary amine, and phenacyl bromide (R-Br)] for cationic photopolymerization and free-radical photopolymerization under the irradiation of ultraviolet (UV; 392 nm) or blue (455 nm) light-emitting diode (LED) bulb are investigated. All 1,2-diketones studied exhibit ground state absorption that match with the emission spectra of UV (392 nm) or blue LED (455 nm) better than that of the well-known blue-light-sensitive photoinitiator camphorquinone (CQ). In particular, AATQ /iodonium salt/NVK can show high photoinitiating ability (with epoxide conversion yield >70%) under the UV light irradiation due to the effect of NVK. In addition, 1,2-diketone/iodonium salt (and optional NVK) systems are capable of initiating free-radical photopolymerization of methacrylates, with conversions of 50–58%. Furthermore, some 1,2-diketone/tertiary amine (and optional R-Br) combinations are found to demonstrate high efficiency to initiate free-radical photopolymerization, and 71% of methacrylate conversion can be achieved with PANQ /tertiary amine/R-Br PIS. Some 1,2-ketone-based PISs can even exhibit higher efficiency than the CQ-based systems. The photochemical mechanism of the radical generation from the 1,2-diketone-based PISs is investigated and found to be consistent with the related photopolymerization efficiency. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Onium salts, namely sulfonium, phosphonium, ammonium, and pyridinium salts containing phenacyl group are photoinitiators appropriate for the polymerization of monomers such as oxiranes and vinyl ethers, which are not polymerizable by a free-radical mechanism. The initiation is accomplished by direct or indirect (sensitized) photolysis of the salts. Depending on the type of the salt, the direct photoinitiation of cationic polymerization involves reversible or irreversible processes. The photolysis of phenacylsulfonium compounds proceeds by a reversible process, while the other types undergo irreversible photolysis leading to complete fragmentation of the photoinitiator. An additionally useful tool, namely photosensitized generation of initiating species enlarges the versatility of these salts as photoinitiators. Photoinitiated free-radical and zwitterionic polymerizations by using phenacyl-type salts are also addressed. Keto-enol tautomerization of phenacyl pyridinium salts is discussed. Moreover, an interesting application concerning in situ synthesis of clay-poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites with the aid of the phenacyl anilinium salt-based photopolymerization technique is noted.  相似文献

A new visible light‐induced controlled radical polymerization of methacrylate with perfluoro‐1‐iodohexane (CF3(CF2)5I) as the initiator in the presence of a photoredox catalyst (fac‐[Ir(ppy)3]) was developed. Mechanistically, a photoexcited fac‐[Ir(ppy)3]* complex reacted with dormant C‐I species to generate the chain propagating radical and IrIVI complex, which could be reversibly reduced by the propagating radical. The molecular weight (Mn) and the corresponding distribution index (Mw/Mn = 1.4) were controlled in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). For the polymerization of functional monomers, such as glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and trifluoroethyl methacrylate, their monomer conversions could be up to 96 and 94%, respectively. No polymerization reaction took place without external light stimulation, indicating that the system was an ideal photo “on?off” switchable system. Furthermore, a clean diblock copolymer PMMA‐b‐PGMA was successfully synthesized with PMMA‐I as the macroinitiator. With CF3(CF2)5I as the initiator, short CF3(CF2)5? group tags were introduced on the produced polymer chains. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Benzoin, a popular photoinitiator for free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers, was improved by introduction of two methyl thioether substituents. This new benzoin derivative showed an about 50 times higher light absorption in the near‐UV spectral region and performed better than the unsubstituted benzoin in polymerization experiments in bulk solutions or films of acrylate monomers when low initiator concentrations are used. Laser flash photolysis, low temperature luminescence experiments and photoproduct studies by mass spectrometry suggest that a slow α‐cleavage mechanism (kα = 2.2 × 105 s?1) from the electronic triplet state with a quantum yield of 0.1 is the primary photoreaction to generate the initiating free radicals. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
