We have developed a device fabrication process to pattern graphene into nanostructures of arbitrary shape and control their electronic properties using local electrostatic gates. Electronic transport measurements have been used to characterize locally gated bipolar graphene p-n-p junctions. We observe a series of fractional quantum Hall conductance plateaus at high magnetic fields as the local charge density is varied in the p and n regions. These fractional plateaus, originating from chiral edge states equilibration at the p-n interfaces, exhibit sensitivity to interedge backscattering which is found to be strong for some of the plateaus and much weaker for other plateaus. We use this effect to explore the role of backscattering and estimate disorder strength in our graphene devices.

Understanding the coupling of graphene with its local environment is critical to be able to integrate it in tomorrow's electronic devices. Here we show how the presence of a metallic substrate affects the properties of an atomically tailored graphene layer. We have deliberately introduced single carbon vacancies on a graphene monolayer grown on a Pt(111) surface and investigated its impact in the electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of the graphene layer. Our low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy studies, complemented by density functional theory, show the existence of a broad electronic resonance above the Fermi energy associated with the vacancies. Vacancy sites become reactive leading to an increase of the coupling between the graphene layer and the metal substrate at these points; this gives rise to a rapid decay of the localized state and the quenching of the magnetic moment associated with carbon vacancies in freestanding graphene layers.

We study spin transport in normal/ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic.../normal graphene superlattices, which can be realized by putting a series of magnetic insulator bars on top of a graphene sheet. Owing to magnetic proximity effect, local exchange splittings will be induced in the graphene sheet, effectively forming a magnetic graphene superlattice. The spin polarization of tunneling conductance and the magneto resistance (MR) exhibit oscillatory behavior with the gate voltage. The superlattice structure leads to an enhanced spin polarization and MR ratio, making the magnetic graphene superlattice become very promising in spintronics applications.

We have studied the tunneling of Dirac fermions through magnetic barriers in graphene. Magnetic barriers are produced via delta function-like inhomogeneous magnetic fields in which Dirac fermions in graphene experience the tunneling barrier in the real sense in contrast to Klein paradox caused by electrostatic barriers. The transmission through the magnetic barriers as functions of incident energy and angle of incoming fermions shows characteristic oscillations associated with tunneling resonances. We have also found the confined states in the magnetic barrier region which turn out to correspond to the total internal reflection in the usual optics.

In this article we study the effect of external magnetic field and electric field on spin transport in bilayer armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNR) by employing semiclassical Monte Carlo approach. We include D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) relaxation due to structural inversion asymmetry (Rashba spin-orbit coupling) and Elliott-Yafet (EY) relaxation to model spin dephasing. In the model we neglect the effect of local magnetic moments due to adatoms and vacancies. We have considered injection polarization along z-direction perpendicular to the plane of graphene and the magnitude of ensemble averaged spin variation is studied along the x-direction which is the transport direction. To the best of our knowledge there has been no theoretical investigation of the effects of external magnetic field on spin transport in graphene nanoribbons. This theoretical investigation is important in order to identify the factors responsible for experimentally observed spin relaxation length in graphene GNRs.

Based on the Anderson impurity model and self-consistent approach, we investigate the condition for the screening of a local magnetic moment by electrons in graphene and the influence of the moment on electronic properties of the system. The results of numerical calculations carried out on a finite sheet of graphene show that when the Fermi energy is above the single occupancy energy and below the double occupancy energy of the local impurity, a magnetic state is possible. A phase diagram in a parameter space spanned by the Coulomb energy U and the Fermi energy is obtained to distinguish the parameter regions for the magnetic and nonmagnetic states of the impurity. We find that the combined effect of the impurity and finite size effect results in a large charge density near the edges of the finite graphene sheet. The density of states exhibits a peak at the Dirac point which is caused by the appearance of the edge states localized at the zigzag edges of the sheet.

Depositing magnetic insulators on graphene has been a promising route to introduce magnetism via exchange proximity interaction in graphene for future spintronics applications.Molecule-based magnets may offer unique opportunities because of their synthesis versatility. Here,we investigate the magnetic proximity effect of epitaxial iron phthalocyanine(FePc) molecules on high-quality monolayer and bilayer graphene devices on hexagonal boron nitride substrates by probing the local and nonlocal transport.Although the FePc molecules introduce large hole doping effects combined with mobility degradation, the magnetic proximity gives rise to a canted antiferromagnetic state under a magnetic field in the monolayer graphene. On bilayer graphene and FePc heterostructure devices, the nonlocal transport reveals a pronounced Zeeman spin-Hall effect.Further analysis of the scattering mechanism in the bilayer shows a dominated long-range scattering. Our findings in graphene/organic magnetic insulator heterostructure provide a new insight for use of molecule-based magnets in two-dimensional spintronic devices.

The transport study of graphene based junctions has become one of the focuses in graphene research. There are two stacking configurations for monolayer–bilayer–monolayer graphene planar junctions. One is the two monolayer graphene contacting the same side of the bilayer graphene, and the other is the two-monolayer graphene contacting the different layers of the bilayer graphene. In this paper, according to the Landauer–Büttiker formula, we study the transport properties of these two configurations. The influences of the local gate potential in each part, the bias potential in bilayer graphene, the disorder and external magnetic field on conductance are obtained. We find the conductances of the two configurations can be manipulated by all of these effects. Especially, one can distinguish the two stacking configurations by introducing the bias potential into the bilayer graphene. The strong disorder and the external magnetic field will make the two stacking configurations indistinguishable in the transport experiment.

We examine the conditions necessary for the presence of localized magnetic moments on adatoms with inner shell electrons in graphene. We show that the low density of states at the Dirac point, and the anomalous broadening of the adatom electronic level, lead to the formation of magnetic moments for arbitrarily small local charging energy. As a result, we obtain an anomalous scaling of the boundary separating magnetic and nonmagnetic states. We show that, unlike any other material, the formation of magnetic moments can be controlled by an electric field effect.

Electronic, optical and thermoelectric parameters of the Ti2N:Mn graphene sheet have been calculated by the density functional theory (DFT) framework. Our calculations were performed with full potential linear augmented plane waves plus local orbitals (FP-LAPW + lo) method and the exchange correlation potential was approximated by generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The Ti2N:Mn graphene sheet has anisotropic electronic behaviors indicating the magnetic property. The group velocity and effective mass in the valance band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) have the high and low amounts, respectively. The optical response to the incident light in the infrared, visible area and ultraviolet edge are completely asymmetric while the optical responses at x and z directions are metallic and semiconductor, respectively. Thermoelectric parameters of Ti2N:Mn graphene have sensitivity to the external magnetic field, and the Seebeck (S) and merit coefficients (ZT) at spin up have great amounts in 150 K.

We study RKKY interactions between local magnetic moments for both doped and undoped graphene. In the former case interactions for moments located on definite sublattices fall off as 1/R2, whereas for those placed at interstitial sites they decay as 1/R3. The interactions are primarily (anti)ferromagnetic for moments on (opposite) equivalent sublattices, suggesting that at low temperature dilute magnetic moments embedded in graphene can order into a state analogous to that of a dilute antiferromagnet. In the undoped case we find no net magnetic moment in the ground state, and demonstrate numerically this effect for ribbons, suggesting the possibility of an unusual spin-transfer device.

We examine the exchange Hamiltonian for magnetic adatoms in graphene with localized inner shell states. On symmetry grounds, we predict the existence of a class of orbitals that lead to a distinct class of quantum critical points in graphene, where the Kondo temperature scales as TK∝|J-Jc|1/3 near the critical coupling Jc, and the local spin is effectively screened by a super-Ohmic bath. For this class, the RKKY interaction decays spatially with a fast power law ~1/R7. Away from half filling, we show that the exchange coupling in graphene can be controlled across the quantum critical region by gating. We propose that the vicinity of the Kondo quantum critical point can be directly accessed with scanning tunneling probes and gating.

We draw motivation from recent experimental studies and present a comprehensive study of magnetothermoelectric transport in a graphene monolayer within the linear response regime. We employ the modified Kubo formalism developed for thermal transport in a magnetic field. Thermopower as well as thermal conductivity as a function of the gate voltage of a graphene monolayer in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the graphene plane is determined for low magnetic fields (~1 T) as well as high fields (~8 T). We include the effects of screened charged impurities on thermal transport. We find good qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent experimental work on the subject. In addition, in order to analyze the effects of modulation, which can be induced by various means, on the thermal transport in graphene, we evaluate the thermal transport coefficients for a graphene monolayer subjected to a periodic electric modulation in a magnetic field. The results are presented as a function of the magnetic field and the gate voltage.

In this article, we employ the classical Monte Carlo approach to study the magnetic properties of graphene system. We analyze the ground-state phase diagrams in the presence of external magnetic and crystal fields under effect of the exchange interactions. The critical temperature is deduced. It is proven that the model exhibits the second-order phase transitions at the transition temperature. The total magnetization with the exchange interactions has studied under the temperatures effect. The total magnetization with the crystal field has been established under effect of exchange interactions and temperatures effect. The magnetic hysteresis cycles of graphene system is deduced under effect of temperatures and crystal field. The observations are in good agreement with related experiments and the other theoretical results. It is proven that the graphene system exhibits the superparamagnetic at the transition temperature and a specific value of reduced crystal field.

We consider graphene in the presence of external magnetic field and elastic deformations that cause emergent magnetic field. The total magnetic field results in the appearance of Landau levels in the spectrum of quasiparticles. In addition, the quasiparticles in graphene experience the emergent gravity. We consider the particular choice of elastic deformation, which gives constant emergent magnetic field and vanishing torsion. Emergent gravity may be considered as perturbation. We demonstrate that the corresponding first order approximation affects the energies of the Landau levels only through the constant renormalization of Fermi velocity. The degeneracy of each Landau level receives correction, which depends essentially on the geometry of the sample. There is the limiting case of the considered elastic deformation, that corresponds to the uniformly stretched graphene. In this case in the presence of the external magnetic field the degeneracies of the Landau levels remain unchanged.

Electrodynamic properties of the graphene–magnetic semiconductor–graphene sandwich-structure have been investigated theoretically with taking into account the dissipation processes. Influence of graphene layers on electromagnetic waves propagation in graphene–semi-infinte magnetic semiconductor and graphene–magnetic semiconductor–graphene sandwich-structure has been analyzed. Frequency and field dependences of the reflectance, transmittance and absorbtance of electromagnetic waves by such structure have been calculated. The size effects associated with the thickness of the structure have been analyzed. The possibility of efficient control of electrodynamic properties of graphene–magnetic semiconductor–graphene sandwich-structure by an external magnetic field has been shown.

Massless Dirac fermions in monolayer graphene exhibit total transmission when normally incident on a scalar potential barrier, a consequence of the Klein paradox originally predicted by O Klein for relativistic electrons obeying the 3 + 1 dimensional Dirac equation. For bilayer graphene, charge carriers are massive Dirac fermions and, due to different chiralities, electron and hole states are not coupled to each other. Therefore, the wavefunction of an incident particle decays inside a barrier as for the non-relativistic Schr?dinger equation. This leads to exponentially small transmission upon normal incidence. We show that, in the presence of magnetic barriers, such massive Dirac fermions can have transmission even at normal incidence. The general consequences of this behavior for multilayer graphene consisting of massless and massive modes are mentioned. We also briefly discuss the effect of a bias voltage on such magnetotransport.

Bilayer graphene has attracted considerable interest due to the important role played by many-body effects, particularly at low energies. Here we report local compressibility measurements of a suspended graphene bilayer. We find that the energy gaps at filling factors ν= ± 4 do not vanish at low fields, but instead merge into an incompressible region near the charge neutrality point at zero electric and magnetic field. These results indicate the existence of a zero-field ordered state and are consistent with the formation of either an anomalous quantum Hall state or a nematic phase with broken rotational symmetry. At higher fields, we measure the intrinsic energy gaps of broken-symmetry states at ν=0, ± 1, and ± 2, and find that they scale linearly with magnetic field, yet another manifestation of the strong Coulomb interactions in bilayer graphene.
