Laboratory study on cracks in saturated sands   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been reported[1] that when a loosely packed column of saturated sand in a vertical cylindrical container is shock loaded axially by dropping to the floor, large horizontal cracks initiate, grow and eventually fade away in the sand as it settles under gravity. This paper shows that a similar phenomenon can also be observed when shock loading is replaced by forcing water to percolate upward through the sand column. It is believed that our result sheds further light on the physics of formation of these cracks. In order to investigate the influence of the vertical vibration loading on the liquefaction of saturated sand, one dimensional model for the saturated sand with a vertical vibration is presented based on the two phase continuous media theory. The development of the liquefaction and the liquefaction region are analyzed. It is shown that the vertical vibration loading could induce liquefaction. The rate of the liquefaction increases with the increase of the initial limit strain or initial porosity or amplitude and frequency of loading, and increases with the decrease of the permeability or initial modulus. It is shown also that there is a phase lag in the sand column. When the sand permeability distribution is non-uniform, the pore pressure and the strain will rise sharply where the permeability is the smallest, and fracture might be induced. With the development of liquefaction, the strength of the soil foundation becomes smaller and smaller. In the limiting case, landslides or debris flows could occur. This paper is concerned with recent advances in the development of near wall-normal-free Reynolds-stress models, whose single point closure formulation, based on the inhomogeneity direction concept, is completely independent of the distance from the wall, and of the normal to the wall direction. In the present approach the direction of the inhomogeneity unit vector is decoupled from the coefficient functions of the inhomogeneous terms. A study of the relative influence of the particular closures used for the rapid redistribution terms and for the turbulent diffusion is undertaken, through comparison with measurements, and with a baseline Reynolds-stress model (RSM) using geometric wall normals. It is shown that wall-normal-free rsms can be reformulated as a projection on a tensorial basis that includes the inhomogeneity direction unit vector, suggesting that the theory of the redistribution tensor closure should be revised by taking into account inhomogeneity effects in the tensorial integrity basis used for its representation. A piezoelectric screw dislocation in the matrix interacting with a circular inhomogeneity with interfacial cracks under antiplane shear and in-plane electric loading at infinity was dealt with. Using complex variable method, a general solution to the problem was presented. For a typical case, the closed form expressions of complex potentials in the inhomogeneity and the matrix regions and derived explicitly when the interface containsthe electroelastic field intensity factors weresingle crack. The image force acting on the piezoelectric screw dislocation was calculated by using the perturbation technique and the generalized Peach-Koehler formula. As a result, numerical analysis and discussion show that the perturbation influence of the interfacial crack on the interaction effects of the dislocation and the inhomogeneity is significant which indicates the presence of the interfacial crack will change the interaction mechanism when the length of the crack goes up to a critical value. It is also shown that soft inhomogeneity can repel the dislocation due to their intrinsic electromechanical coupling behavior.  相似文献

The elastic field of an elliptic nano inhomogeneity embedded in an infinite matrix under anti-plane shear is studied with the complex variable method. The interface stress effects of the nano inhomogeneity are accounted for with the Gurtin–Murdoch model. The conformal mapping method is then applied to solve the formulated boundary value problem. The obtained numerical results are compared with the existing closed form solutions for a circular nano inhomogeneity and a traditional elliptic inhomogeneity under anti-plane. It shows that the proposed semi-analytic method is effective and accurate. The stress fields inside the inhomogeneity and matrix are then systematically studied for different interfacial and geometrical parameters. It is found that the stress field inside the elliptic nano inhomogeneity is no longer uniform due to the interface effects. The shear stress distributions inside the inhomogeneity and matrix are size dependent when the size of the inhomogeneity is on the order of nanometers. The numerical results also show that the interface effects are highly influenced by the local curvature of the interface. The elastic field around an elliptic nano hole is also investigated in this paper. It is found that the traction free boundary condition breaks down at the elliptic nano hole surface. As the aspect ratio of the elliptic hole increases, it can be seen as a Mode-III blunt crack. Even for long blunt cracks, the surface effects can still be significant around the blunt crack tip. Finally, the equivalence between the uniform eigenstrain inside the inhomogeneity and the remote loading is discussed.  相似文献

The boundary layer on a plate with an inclined blunt leading edge is investigated for a free-stream flow with a small span-periodic velocity inhomogeneity. This flow simulates the penetration of the outer turbulence into the swept wing boundary layer. It is shown that the boundary layer perturbations generated by the inhomogeneity generally have a streamwise velocity component significantly greater than the initial inhomogeneity amplitude. The dependence of the perturbations on the distance from the leading edge and the spanwise inhomogeneity period is found. It is shown that the swept wing boundary layer is less sensitive to the perturbation type in question than the straight wing boundary layer.  相似文献

It is still a challenge to clarify the dependence of overall elastic properties of heterogeneous materials on the microstructures of non-elliposodal inhomogeneities (cracks, pores, foreign particles). From the theory of elasticity, the formulation of the perturbance elastic fields, coming from a non-ellipsoidal inhomogeneity embedded in an infinitely extended material with remote constant loading, inevitably involve one or more integral equations. Up to now, due to the mathematical difficulty, there is almost no explicit analytical solution obtained except for the ellipsoidal inhomogeneity. In this paper, we point out the impossibility to transform this inhomogeneity problem into a conventional Eshelby problem by the equivalent inclusion method even if the eigenstrain is chosen to be non-uniform. We also build up an equivalent model, called the second Eshelby problem, to investigate the perturbance stress. It is probably a better template to make use of the profound methods and results of conventional Eshelby problems of non-ellipsoidal inclusions.  相似文献

The anti-plane problem of N arc-shaped interfacial cracks between a circular piezoelectric inhomogeneity and an infinite piezoelectric matrix is investigated by means of the complex variable method. Cracks are assumed to be permeable and then explicit expressions are presented, respectively, for the electric field on the crack faces, the complex potentials in media and the intensity factors near the crack-tips. As examples, the corresponding solutions are obtained for a piezoelectric bimaterial system with one or two permeable arc-shaped interfacial cracks, respectively. Additionally, the solutions for the cases of impermeable cracks also are given by treating an impermeable crack as a particular case of a permeable crack. It is shown that for the case of permeable interfacial cracks, the electric field is jumpy ahead of the crack tips, and its intensity factor is always dependent on that of stress. Moreover all the field singularities are dependent not only on the applied mechanical load, but also on the applied electric load. However, for the case of a homogeneous material with permeable cracks, all the singular factors are related only to the applied stresses and material constants.  相似文献

The elastic interaction between a screw dislocation and an elliptical inhomogeneity with interfacial cracks is studied. The screw dislocation may be located outside or inside the inhomogeneity. An efficient complex variable method for the complex multiply connected region is developed, and the general solutions to the problem are derived. As illustrative examples, solutions in explicit series form for complex potentials are presented in the case of one or two interfacial cracks. Image forces on the dislocation are calculated by using the Peach-Koehler formula. The influence of crack geometries and material properties on the image forces is evaluated and discussed. It is shown that the interfacial crack has a significant effect on the equilibrium position of the dislocation near an elliptical-arc interface. The main results indicate, when the length of the crack goes up to a critical value, the presence of the interfacial crack can change the interaction mechanism between a screw dislocation and an elliptical inclusion. The present solutions can include a number of previously known results as special cases. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China(10272009 and 10472030) and the Natural Science Foundation of Hunan Province(02JJY2014)  相似文献

In order to understand the initiation behavior of microstructurally small cracks in a stress corrosion cracking condition, it is important to know the tensile normal stress acting on the grain boundary (normal GB stress). The local stress in a polycrystalline body is enhanced by the inhomogeneity which stems from the shape and orientation of each grain. The stress in a three-dimensional polycrystalline body consisting of 100 grains with random orientation, under a remote uniform tensile stress condition, is evaluated by the finite element method. It was revealed that the local stress on the polycrystalline body is inhomogeneous under uniform applied stress and becomes large at those grain boundaries that are perpendicular to the load axis, though there is large fluctuation. It was also shown that the normal GB stress tends to be large near the triple points due to the deformation constraint caused by adjacent grains. Finally, the maximum stress on the surface of a large component caused by the inhomogeneity was evaluated by using Gumbel statistics.  相似文献

The formation mechanism of “water film” (or crack) in saturated sand is analyzed theoretically and numerically. The theoretical analysis shows that there will be no stable “water film” in the saturated sand if the strength of the skeleton is zero and no positions are choked. It is shown by numerical simulation that stable water films initiate and grow if the choking state keeps unchanged once the fluid velocities decrease to zero in the liquefied sand column. The developments of “water film” based on the model presented in this paper are compared with experimental results. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (40025103 and 10202024) and Key Laboratory of Mountain Hazards and Surface Process, Chinese Academy of Sciences. THE PERIODIC CRACK PROBLEM IN BONDED PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The problem of a periodic array of parallel cracks in a homogeneous piezoelectric strip bonded to a functionally graded piezoelectric material is investigated for inhomogeneous continuum. It is assumed that the material inhomogeneity is represented as the spatial varia- tion of the shear modulus in the form of an exponential function along the direction of cracks. The mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a singular integral equation by applying the Fourier transform, and the singular integral equation is solved numerically by using the Gauss- Chebyshev integration technique.Numerical results are obtained to illustrate the variations of the stress intensity factors as a function of the crack periodicity for different values of the material inhomogeneity.  相似文献

The response of the boundary layer on a plate with a blunt leading edge to frozen-in vortex perturbations whose vorticity is normal to the plate surface is found. It is shown that these vortices generate an inhomogeneity of the streamwise velocity component in the boundary layer. This inhomogeneity is analogous to the streaky structure developing as the degree of free-stream turbulence increases. The dependence of the amplitude and shape of the boundary layer inhomogeneity on the distance from the leading edge, the streamwise and spanwise scales, and other parameters is found for periodic and local initial perturbations. It is shown that the receptivity of the boundary layer decreases with increase in the frequency and with decrease in the streamwise perturbation scale.  相似文献

The stress and electric fields in electrostrictive materials under general electric loading at infinity are obtained in this paper. It is shown that the pseudo total stresses are continuous in the whole body. The elliptic inhomogeneity problem is first discussed in this paper and its solution is also given. The results show that the stress in the inhomogeneity is not uniform which is different from the solution of Eshelby theory for elastic materials. When the inhomogeneity and matrix have the same dielectric permittivity or the matrix is a non-electrostrictive material, the stress field is uniform in the inhomogeneity. The form of stress function is simple when the inhomogeneity degenerates to a circle.  相似文献

A possibility of degeneration of relationships between stresses and their derivatives with respect to the coordinates in the plane problem of the elasticity theory is considered. For particular dependences of the parameters of elasticity on coordinates, curves are given, for which degeneration conditions are satisfied. It is shown that even a small inhomogeneity of the medium causes stress instability.  相似文献

Complex stress potentials are derived to obtain an analytical solution for the stresses in epicycloidal specimens which contain a dislocation. The solution is used to obtain an analytical expression for the stress intensity factors of cusp-like cracks in such specimens which can be considered as a generalization of the well established concept of Griffith cracks. It is shown that by suitable positioning of the dislocation, both positive and negative mode I stress intensity factors will result. This illustrates the potential of epicycloid specimens for determination of fracture properties under compressive loading where frictional contact of the crack surfaces is a priori avoided.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for the calculation of two-dimensional elastic fields in a solid containing any number of inhomogeneities under arbitrary far field loadings. The method called pseudo-dislocations method, is illustrated for the solution of interacting elliptic inhomogeneities. It reduces the interacting inhomogeneities problem to a set of linear algebraic equations. Numerical results are presented for a variety of elliptic inhomogeneity arrangements, including the special cases of elliptic holes, cracks and circular inhomogeneities. All these complicated problems can be solved with high accuracy and efficiency.  相似文献

The use of distributions (generalized functions) is a powerful tool to treat singularities in structural mechanics and, besides providing a mathematical modelling, their capability of leading to closed form exact solutions is shown in this paper. In particular, the problem of stability of the uniform Euler–Bernoulli column in presence of multiple concentrated cracks, subjected to an axial compression load, under general boundary conditions is tackled. Concentrated cracks are modelled by means of Dirac’s delta distributions. An integration procedure of the fourth order differential governing equation, which is not allowed by the classical distribution theory, is proposed. The exact buckling mode solution of the column, as functions of four integration constants, and the corresponding exact buckling load equation for any number, position and intensity of the cracks are presented. As an example a parametric study of the multi-cracked simply supported and clamped–clamped Euler–Bernoulli columns is presented.  相似文献
