2-Hydroxyacids display complex monolayer phase behavior due to the additional hydrogen bonding afforded by the presence of the second hydroxy group. The placement of this group at the position α to the carboxylic acid functionality also introduces the possibility of chelation, a utility important in crystallization including biomineralization. Biomineralization, like many biological processes, is inherently a nonequilibrium process. The nonequilibrium monolayer phase behavior of 2-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid was investigated on each of pure water, calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate crystallizing subphases as a precursor study to a model calcium carbonate biomineralizing system, each at a pH of ~6. The role of the bicarbonate co-ion in manipulating the monolayer structure was determined by comparison with monolayer phase behavior on a sodium chloride subphase. Monolayer phase behavior was probed using surface pressure/area isotherms, surface potential, Brewster angle microscopy, and synchrotron-based grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity. Complex phase behavior was observed for all but the sodium chloride subphase with hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and steric effects defining the symmetry of the monolayer. On a pure water subphase hydrogen bonding dominates with three phases coexisting at low pressures. Introduction of calcium ions into the aqueous subphase ensures strong cation binding to the surfactant head groups through chelation. The monolayer becomes very unstable in the presence of bicarbonate ions within the subphase due to short-range hydrogen bonding interactions between the monolayer and bicarbonate ions facilitated by the sodium cation enhancing surfactant solubility. The combined effects of electrostatics and hydrogen bonding are observed on the calcium carbonate crystallizing subphase.  相似文献

The novel perfluorinated double long-chain salts with divalent counterions of separate electric charge, 1,1-(1,omega-alkanediyl)-bispyridinium perfluorotetradecane- carboxylate [CnBP(FC14)2 : n = 2, 6, 10, 14], were newly synthesized and their interfacial behavior was investigated by Langmuir monolayer methods. Surface properties [surface pressure (pi)-, surface potential (DeltaV)-, dipole moment (micro perpendicular)-area (A) isotherms] and morphological images of CnBP(FC14)2 monolayers on a subphase of water and on various NaCl concentrations were measured by employing the Wilhelmy method, the ionizing electrode method, fluorescence microscopy (FM), and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). CnBP(FC14)2 formed a stable monolayer on water at 298.2 K, where these pi-A isotherms shifted to a larger molecular area with increasing charge separation and had no transition point from a disordered phase to an ordered one. On the contrary, the pi-A isotherms on NaCl solutions moved to the smaller areas, showed the transition and higher collapse pressures compared to the pi-A isotherms on water. These results suggested that a sodium chloride subphase induced the condensation of CnBP(FC14)2 molecules upon compression. In addition, it is quite noticeable that a dissociation of CnBP counterion from CnBP(FC14)2 occurs on NaCl solutions, depending on the extent of charge separation. This phenomenon was supported by the changes of the limiting area, transition pressure, collapse pressure, repeated compression-expansion cycle curve, and DeltaV behavior of perfluorotetradecanoic acid (FC14). Furthermore, temperature dependence of these monolayers was investigated, and an apparent molar quantity change on the phase transition was evaluated on 0.15 M NaCl. The morphological behavior of CnBP(FC14)2 and FC14 monolayers was also confirmed by FM and BAM images.  相似文献

When dioctadecyl dimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) is compressed on a subphase containing 3,3'-disulfopropyl-5,5'-dichlorothiacyanine (THIAMS), adsorption of the dye to the DODAB monolayer results in the formation of J-aggregates which spontaneously organize into polygonal domains of micron size. The features of the domains depend on the surface pressure. The fluorescence of the individual domains is polarized. The shapes of the domains determined by fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are identical. The domains differ however significantly from those observed after injection of a 3,3'-disulfopropyl-5,5'-dichloro-9-ethylthiacarbocyanine (THIATS) or THIAMS solution below a precompressed DODAB film, as well as from the domains observed upon compression of a DODAB monolayer on a subphase containing 10(-6) M THIATS.  相似文献

F68, a triblock copolymer of the form poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide), is found to effectively seal damaged cell membranes. To better understand the molecular interaction between F68 and cells, we have modeled the outer leaflet of a cell membrane with a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayer spread at the air-water interface and introduced poloxamer into the subphase. Subsequent interactions of the polymer with the monolayer either upon expansion or compression were monitored using concurrent Langmuir isotherm and fluorescence microscopy measurements. To alter the activity of the poloxamer, a range of subphase temperatures from 5 to 37 degrees C was used. Lower temperatures increase the solubility of the poloxamer in the subphase and therefore lessen the amount of material at the interface, resulting in a lower equilibrium spreading pressure. Additionally, changes in temperature affect the phase behavior of DPPC. Below the triple point, the monolayer is condensed at pertinent polymer insertion pressures; for temperatures immediately above the triple point, the monolayer is a heterogeneous mix of liquid expanded and condensed phase; for the highest temperature measured, the DPPC monolayer remains completely fluid. At all temperatures, F68 inserts into DPPC monolayers at its equilibrium spreading pressure. Upon compression of the monolayer, polymers are squeezed-out at surface pressures notably higher than those for insertion, with higher temperatures leading to a higher squeeze-out pressure. An increase in temperature decreases the solvent quality of water for the poloxamer, lowering solubility of the polymer in the subphase and thus increasing its propensity to be maintained within the monolayer to higher pressures.  相似文献

Competition and oxidation of fatty acids spread at the air/water interface were investigated using surface-specific, broad-bandwidth, sum frequency generation spectroscopy. At the air/water interface, a monolayer of oleic acid replaced a monolayer of deuterated palmitic acid at equilibrium spreading pressure. Subsequent oxidation of the oleic acid monolayer with ozone resulted in products more water soluble than the palmitic acid; therefore, the palmitic acid monolayer reformed at the surface. Results indicate that the surfactants on the surface of fat-coated tropospheric aerosols will only possess oxidized acyl chains after all less soluble species in the aqueous subphase have been removed through the processes of replacement at the surface and atmospheric oxidation.  相似文献

We present the results of a fluorescence microscopy study of the interaction of annexin A1 with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayers as a function of the lipid monolayer phase and the pH of the aqueous subphase. We show that annexin A1-DPPC interaction depends strongly on the domain structure of the DPPC monolayer and only weakly on the subphase pH. Annexin A1 is found to be line active, with preferential adsorption at phase boundaries. Also, annexin A1 is found to form networks in the presence of a domain structure in the monolayer. Our results point toward an important contribution of the unique N-terminal domain to the organization of the protein at the interface.

The behavior of individual 1,7-dicetyltetraaza-12-crown-4 and its mixture with 1,4,7,10-tetracetyltetraaza-12-crown-4 in the Langmuir monolayers at the subphases containing Cu(II) ions or colloidal gold particles is studied. Based on the compression isotherms, the complexing ability of these amphiphilic cyclenes in a monolayer at the surface of aqueous dilute solutions of copper salt is established. It was shown that the fraction of complexes in a monolayer is proportional to the copper ion concentration in the subphase. Using surface balance, atomic force microscopy, and electron microscopy methods, it was revealed that the monolayer of dicetylcyclene at the surface of gold hydrosol binds nanoparticles from the subphase; the number of particles bound by the monolayer is proportional to their content in the hydrosol. The Langmuir–Blodgett films (LBF) of dicetylcyclene are prepared; their ability to bind copper ions from solution was disclosed by quartz crystal microbalance. The LBFs of dicetylcyclene containing gold nanoparticles in each layer are assembled.  相似文献

Surface pressure and surface potential-area isotherms were used to characterize a lysozyme Langmuir monolayer. The compression-decompression cycles and stability measurements showed a homogeneous and stable monolayer at the air-water interface. Salt concentration in the subphase and pH of the subphase were parameters controlling the homogeneity and stability of the Langmuir monolayer. In situ UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to verify the homogeneity of the lysozyme monolayer and to identify the chromophore residues in the lysozyme. Optimal experimental conditions were determined to prepare a homogeneous and stable lysozyme Langmuir monolayer.

A twin-tailed, twin-chiral fatty acid, (2R,3R)-(+)-bis(decyloxy)succinic acid was synthesized and its two dimensional behavior at the air-water interface was examined. The pH of the subphase had a profound effect on the monolayer formation. On acidic subphase, stable monolayers with increased area per molecule due to hydrogen bonding and bilayers at collapse pressures were observed. Highly compressible films were formed at 40 degrees C, while stable monolayers with increased area were observed at sub-room temperatures. Langmuir monolayers formed on subphases containing 1 mM ZnCl2 and CaCl2 revealed two dimensional metal complex formation with Zn2+ forming a chelate-type complex, while Ca2+ formed an ionic-type complex. Monolayers transferred from the condensed phase onto hydrophilic Si(100) and quartz substrates revealed the formation of bilayers through transfer-induced monolayer buckling. Compression induced crystallites in 2D from monolayers and vesicle-like supramolecular structures from multilayers were the noted LB film characteristics, adopting optical imaging and electron microscopy. The interfacial monolayer structure studied through molecular dynamics simulation revealed the order and packing at a molecular level; monolayers adsorbed at various simulated specific areas of the molecule corroborated the (pi-A) isotherm and the formation of a hexagonal lattice at the air-water interface.  相似文献

The behavior of the monolayers of three diphilic aminomethylated calix[4]resorcinarene (CRA) derivatives on the surface of a pure aqueous subphase and subphase containing copper(II), nickel(II), europium(III), terbium(III), and lanthanum(III) ions was investigated. The monolayer transfer to the quartz and single-crystal silicon substrates was accomplished by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The films were studied by ellipsometry and mass-spectrometry. Metal ions were found to exert effect on the limit area per one CRA molecule in the monolayer, on the surface collapse pressure and transfer coefficient of monolayer, and on the thickness and refractive index of the CRA-based LB films.  相似文献

Monopolar and bipolar derivatives of hexadecanoic acid (HA), 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (HHA), methyl hexadecanoate (MH) and methyl 16-hydroxyhexadecanoate (MHH) have been investigated on pure water and NaCl solutions with different ion concentrations (1, 2 and 3 mol l−1). Surface pressure area isotherms show that HA forms a fully condensed monolayer on pure water at 20 °C [E. Teer, C.M. Knobler, S. Siegel, D. Vollhardt, G. Brezesinski, J. Phys. Chem., B104, 43, 2000, pp. 10053–10058] whereas in the case of the corresponding bipolar HHA the hydroxy group as a second polar moiety leads to a destabilization of the monolayer. The presence of two relatively strong hydrophilic polar groups at opposite ends of the chain prevents the formation of condensed films. The esterification of the carboxyl group (MH) changes the phase sequence from L2–Ov–LS for HA to L2–LS. Inserting a hydroxy group at the end of the chain (MHH) shifts the liquid expanded/liquid condensed (LE/LC) phase transition to higher surface pressures but does not change the phase sequence, however it increases the chain tilt. The pressure of the first-order phase transition LE/LC is strongly temperature dependent for MH, while the transition pressure of MHH is almost temperature independent. The phase behavior of MHH and MH on pure water was further studied by surface potential, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), fluorescence microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) measurements. The LC domains of MHH on pure water are so small that no inner texture can be observed by BAM in contrast to the LC domains of MH. 3M NaCl in the subphase does not change the MH textures, while it increases the size of the LC domains of MHH. The influence of the hydroxy group on the monolayer behavior is discussed in terms of the formation of hydrogen bonds. The presence of NaCl in the subphase expands the monolayers. The results obtained are explained by changes in monolayer–monolayer and monolayer–subphase interactions.  相似文献

The behavior of three copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), methacrylic acid (MAA), and hydrophobic moiety was studied at phospholipid monolayer/subphase interfaces. The hydrophobic moieties, N-terminal dioctadecylamine (DODA) and random octadecylacrylate (ODA), were used as anchoring groups. The interactions between a 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) monolayer and the copolymers were studied using the Langmuir balance technique. The effect of subphase pH, distribution of anchors along the copolymer chain, and copolymer molecular weight on the nature of the interactions between the copolymer chains and the DSPC monolayer were investigated. A first-order kinetics model was used to analyze the copolymers adsorption at the DSPC monolayer/subphase interface and allowed the interaction area between the copolymer chains and the DSPC monolayer, A(x), to be determined. The interaction area appears to depend on the subphase pH and the copolymer molecular weight. On decreasing pH, the interaction area of high molecular weight copolymers increases significantly; this is consistent with the copolymer chain phase transition from an extended coil to a collapsed globule while pH is lowered. In the latter conformation, strong hydrophobic attractive interactions between the copolymer chains and the hydrophobic part of the DSPC monolayer favor the copolymer intercalation, which could eventually provoke the phospholipidic layer destabilization or rupture.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were prepared and surface-modified by mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) to render a surface with carboxylic acid groups (MSA-Au). Octadecylamine (ODA) was used as a template monolayer to adsorb the Au NPs dispersed in the subphase. The effect of MSA concentration on the incorporation of Au NPs on the ODA monolayer and the relevant behavior of the mixed monolayer were studied using the pressure-area (pi-A) isotherm and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. The experimental results showed that the adsorbed density of Au NPs is low without the surface modification by MSA. When MSA was added into the Au NP-containing subphase, the incorporation amount of Au NPs increased with increasing MSA concentration up to approximately 1 x 10-5 M for the particle density of 1.3 x 1011 particles/mL. With a further increase in the MSA concentration, the adsorbed particle density decreases due to competitive adsorption between the free MSA molecules and the MSA-Au NPs. It is inferred that free MSA molecules adsorb more easily than the MSA-Au NPs on the ODA monolayer. Therefore, an excess amount of MSA present in the subphase is detrimental to the incorporation of gold particles. The study on the monolayer behavior also shows that the pi-A isotherm of the ODA monolayer shifts right when small amounts of Au NPs or free MSA molecules are incorporated. However, when larger amounts of particles are adsorbed at the air/liquid interface, a left shift of the pi-A isotherm appears, probably due to the adsorption of ODA molecules onto the particle surface and the transferring of the particles from beneath the ODA monolayer to the air/water interface. According to the present method, it is possible to prepare uniform particulate films of controlled densities by controlling the particle concentration in the subphase, the MSA concentration, and the surface pressure of a mixed monolayer.  相似文献

The adsorbed amount of partially deuterated dihexadecyl-diaza-18-crown-6 ether (d-ACE16) in the presence of different chain length fatty acids as a function of surface pressure was determined by neutron reflectometry technique. The highest adsorbed amount of the azacrown ether was observed for the mixture of ACE16 with hexadecanoic (palmitic) acid, pointing to the importance of chain length matching between the two species for optimum stabilization of the mixed monolayer. The contrast variation technique was used to estimate the contribution to the total adsorbed amount from stearic acid and ACE16. It was found that the mixed Langmuir monolayer is stable against dissolution up to a surface pressure of 20 mN m(-1). Above this pressure, however, the spread and adsorbed amounts start to deviate, indicative of partial dissolution into the aqueous subphase. The consequences of this behavior for the transport of metal ions through the interfaces of permeation liquid membranes (PLMs) are discussed.  相似文献

Here, we report a system we have developed where long double-stranded DNAs (dsDNAs) are immobilized on a monolayer of Zn-arachidate. We have applied the Langmuir-Blodgett technique to form the monolayer of Zn-arachidate where Zn(II) is bound to arachidic acid through charge neutralization. Because tetrahedral Zn(II) participates in DNA recognition through coordination, we have been able to layer DNA over the Zn-arachidate monolayer. The DNA layer shows a typical compression and expansion cycle in a concentration-dependent fashion. Interestingly, the DNA monolayer is available for enzymatic degradation by DNaseI. The detection of DNA and its accessibility towards biological reaction is demonstrated by imaging through fluorescence microscopy. The conformation of the DNA, immobilized on the monolayer, was studied with the help of atomic force microscopy (AFM). We observed that the dsDNAs were aligned in a stretched manner on the surface. To investigate further, we also demonstrate here that the small single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) immobilized on the air-water interface can act as a target molecule for the complementary ssDNA present in the subphase. The study of DNA hybridization done with the help of fluorescence spectroscopy clearly supports the AFM characterization.  相似文献

Octadecanethiol (ODT) is known to form self-assembled monolayer on noble metal surfaces which has potential technological applications. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is another useful method of obtaining highly ordered assembly of molecules. It is of interest to find whether ODT molecules can also form a stable Langmuir monolayer which facilitates the preparation of LB films. In literature, it has been reported that ODT molecules form an unstable Langmuir monolayer. We have studied the stability of the monolayer of the ODT molecules at air-water interface using surface manometry and microscopy techniques. We find the monolayer to be stable on ultrapure water of resistivity greater than 18MOmega cm. However, the behavior changes in the presence of even small amount of additives like NaOH or CdCl2 in the subphase. Our AFM studies on the LB films of ODT deposited from ion-free ultrapure water showed streak-like bilayer domains. The LB films of ODT deposited from CdCl2 containing aqueous subphase yield dendritic domains of the complexed unit grown over ODT monolayer. These nanostructures on surfaces may have potential applications in molecular electronics.  相似文献

Submicrocapsules have been prepared from diethylaminoethyl dextran and xanthan gum on oil cores by ultrasonic treatment. These capsules have been modified with poly-L-lysine via electrostatic adsorption. The behavior of the capsules has been investigated at an air–water interface after their introduction into the aqueous subphase. The interaction of the capsules with a 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine monolayer formed on the water surface (model cellular membrane) has been studied both upon their introduction under the condensed monolayer and with the use of a dilute colloidal solution of the capsules as a subphase.  相似文献

The influence of nanostructured CaCO3 particles, both uncoated and coated with a polyelectrolyte (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), polyethyleneimine, fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate-labeled poly(allylamine hydrochloride), or sodium polystyrene sulfonate), on a stearic acid monolayer spread on the surface of an aqueous subphase has been studied. The interaction of the particles present in the subphase with the monolayer as depending on the presence and composition of a polymer coating has been estimated with the help of compression isotherms and the Brewster angle microscopy. The monolayers were transferred from the aqueous subphase onto a solid substrate and studied by scanning electron microscopy. Strong interaction has been revealed between the calcium carbonate particles and the stearic acid monolayer. It has been shown that the transfer of the monolayer from the aqueous suspension surface onto the solid substrate may be accompanied by the detachment of the polymer coating from the surface of CaCO3 particles or their transfer together with the monolayer.  相似文献
