We described the design and synthesis of a modified poly(aryl ether ketone) bearing phenolphthalein and allyl groups (P‐PAEK) via nucleophilic polycondensation. A new kind of composite separator, crosslinked P‐PAEK/polyvinylidene fluoride (c‐P‐PAEK/PVDF) membrane was successfully prepared using phase separation, phase inversion method, and UV crosslinking technique. As a separator of lithium‐ion battery, c‐P‐PAEK/PVDF membrane demonstrates high porosity and uniform distribution of pores with interconnected pathways. Low thermal shrinkage, distinct shut‐down effect, high liquid electrolyte uptake capacity, and exciting liquid electrolyte wettability of the prepared c‐P‐PAEK/PVDF membrane have been revealed through comprehensive study. Moreover, the c‐P‐PAEK/PVDF membrane was applied to assemble a conventional Li/LiFePO4 coin cell, which exhibited hopeful cell performance. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The equilibrium phase behavior of water (nonsolvent)‐DMF (solvent)‐PVDF system at 25°C was investigated via both theoretical and experimental approaches. Using binary interaction parameters, χij, obtained previously, the theoretical phase boundaries were computed and were found to match closely the measured binodal and crystallization‐induced gelation data. Membranes were prepared using the isothermal immersion‐precipitation processes in various dope and bath conditions. The formed membranes demonstrated a broad spectrum of morphologies: At one extreme, asymmetric structure was obtained featuring a continuous tight skin and a sublayer composed of parallel macrovoids and cellular pores; at the other limit, skinless microporous membrane was produced with spherical particles packed into a bi‐continuous structure. The crystalline characters of PVDF gels and membranes were examined by small angle light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. In addition, diffusion trajectories and concentration profiles in the membrane solution before precipitation were calculated for the immersion process. These results predicted reasonably the various morphologies observed in the membranes. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 2079–2092, 1999  相似文献

Composite ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by coating a thin film of self‐assembling polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) block copolymers and poly(acrylic acid) homopolymers on top of a support membrane. Block copolymers self‐assembled into a nanostructure where the minority component forms cylinders, whereas homopolymers reside in the core of the cylinders. Selective removal of the homopolymers led to the formation of pores. The morphology of the polymer layer was controlled by varying the content of homopolymers or polymer concentration of the coating solution, which led to membranes with different molecular weight cutoffs (MWCOs) and permeabilities. Uniform pores were obtained using low homopolymer contents, whereas high homopolymer contents caused macrophase separation and resulted in large polydisperse pores or craters at the surface. The thickness of the block copolymer film also influenced the structure and performance of the membranes, where a thicker film results in a strong decrease in permeability but a lower MWCO. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer blend membranes have been obtained consisting of a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic polymers distributed in co‐continuous phases. In order to obtain stable membranes in aqueous environments, the hydrophilic phase is formed by a poly(hydrohyethyl acrylate), PHEA, network while the hydrophobic phase is formed by poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene) P(VDF‐TrFE). To obtain the composites, in a first stage, P(VDF‐TrFE) is blended with poly(ethylene oxyde) (PEO), the latter used as sacrificial porogen. P(VDF‐TrFE)/PEO blend membranes were prepared by solvent casting at 70°C followed by cooling to room temperature. Then PEO is removed from the membrane by immersion in water obtaining a P(VDF‐TrFE) porous membrane. After removing of the PEO polymer, a P(VDF‐TrFE) membrane results in which pores are collapsed. Nevertheless the pores reopen when a mixture of hydroxethyl acrylate (HEA) monomer, ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (as crosslinker) and ethanol (as diluent) is absorbed in the membrane and subsequent polymerization yields hybrid hydrophilic/hydrophobic membranes with controlled porosity. The membranes are thus suitable for lithium‐ion battery separator membranes and/or biostable supports for cell culture in biomedical applications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The structure and formation mechanism of a microporous phase‐inversion poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane exhibiting a relatively loosely packed agglomerate of semicrystalline globules are explored. The membrane has been prepared by the coagulation of a solution of PVDF in dimethylformamide by the action of 1‐octanol, which is a soft nonsolvent. Experimental observations pertain to the globule surface, which is dominated by a grainy nanostructure; the globular interior, which exhibits a range of fine structures (e.g., twisted sheets and treelike branches); and the globule–globule connections, which exhibit a sheetlike or ropelike structure. On the basis of the observed structural details and phase diagram considerations, it is proposed that the membrane structure is the result of a unique combination of a polymer crystallization and a liquid–liquid phase‐separation process, with end‐result globular structural features of remarkable uniformity. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were prepared by the isothermal immersion and precipitation of PVDF/N‐methyl‐2‐pyrollidone dope solutions in either harsh or soft nonsolvent baths. Low‐voltage field emission scanning electron microscopy imaging of the formed membranes at high magnifications (e.g., 300,000×) revealed their nanoscale fine structures, particularly dendrites observed on the surfaces of the macrovoids, cellular pores, and the membrane skin, which have never been successfully presented in the literature. Evidence of crystallization was also demonstrated by X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The phase diagram at 25 °C, including a binodal, tie lines, and a crystallization‐induced gelation line, was determined both experimentally and theoretically. These results were further used in mass‐transfer calculations to obtain diffusion trajectories and concentration profiles for the membrane region, which were useful for elucidating the relationship between the membrane preparation conditions and the obtained membrane morphologies. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A one-step procedure for the preparation of ion-selective membranes is described. The method employs the thermally induced gel crystallization of ultrahigh molecular weight poly(ethylene) (UHMW-PE) from a dilute xylene solution. After evaporation of the xylene, a microporous UHMW-PE film remains, which can serve as the support for liquid and polymeric ion-selective membranes. The addition of a membrane solvent and suitable receptor molecules to the xylene solution allows a one-step incorporation of these membrane components into the UHMW-PE support. The influence of the preparation conditions of the UHMW-PE support on the rates of the p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene tetraethylester-mediated transport of NaClO4 was studied. Two concepts to improve the life-time of the membranes are introduced. In a first approach, the addition of photocrosslinkable nitril-substituted siloxane copolymers to the membrane phase has been evaluated. The enhanced viscosity of the membrane phase reduces leaching of carrier and solvent molecules from the membrane into the aqueous phases. In a second approach, the solvent is omitted and the membrane-phase merely consists of a benzo-15-crown-5 or calix[4]arene modified siloxane-copolymer, which is substituted to such a degree that ion transport no longer has to take place via diffusion of host–guest complexes but by jumping of the cations from one fixed carrier to a neighboring carrier. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This work reports the surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from hydrogen plasma‐treated porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membranes using the C? F groups as initiators. Hydrogen plasma treatment on PTFE membrane surfaces changes their chemical environment through defluorination and hydrogenation reactions. With the hydrogen plasma treatment, the C? F groups of the modified PTFE membrane surface become effective initiators of ATRP. Surface‐initiated ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) is carried out to graft PPEGMA chains to PTFE membrane surfaces. The chain lengths of poly(PEGMA) (PPEGMA) grafted on PTFE surfaces increase with increasing the reaction time of ATRP. Furthermore, the chain ends of PPEGMA grown on PTFE membrane surfaces then serve as macroinitiators for the ATRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) to build up the PPEGMA‐b‐PNIPAAm block copolymer chains on the PTFE membrane surfaces. The chemical structures of the modified PTFE membranes are characterized using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The modification increases the surface hydrophilicity of the PTFE membranes with reductions in their water‐contact angles from 120° to 60°. The modified PTFE membranes also show temperature‐responsive properties and protein repulsion features owing to the presence of PNIPAAM and PPEGMA chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method of fabricating pore‐filled membranes has been developed by coating a hydrophobic polyolefinic microfiltration membrane with polyethylenimine (PEI) to produce a chemically active surface. An evaporative coating technique was used to coat the internal surface of a polyolefinic membrane with PEI in chloroform (CHCl3). The coated PEI was then crosslinked by naphthalene‐1,4‐disulfonyl chloride in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The incorporation of the PEI coating changed the properties of the base membrane from hydrophobic to relatively hydrophilic; the nitrogens could be titrated, and the coating could not be washed out. 4,4′‐Azo‐bis(4‐cyanovaleryl chloride), a heat‐sensitive radical source, was incorporated into the coated membrane. The coated membrane, with incorporated azo compound, was heated to 75 °C in the presence of acrylic acid, 4‐(vinylpyridine), or styrene to give the corresponding grafted, pore‐filled membranes. The membranes exhibited hydraulic fluxes and pH valve effects consistent with molecular brushes grafted within the pores of the membranes. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Seven different fluoropolymer films were used as matrix materials for radiation‐grafted ion‐exchange membranes. The crystallinity and preferred orientation of these membranes were studied with wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and the lamellar structure of the membranes was examined with small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The crystallinity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)‐based matrix materials varied between 57 and 40%, and the crystallinity of the sulfonated samples varied between 34 and 23%. The lamellar periods of PVDF‐based matrix materials were about 115 Å, and the lamellar periods of poly(ethylene‐alt‐tetrafluoroethylene) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) were 250 and 212 Å, respectively. When the samples were grafted, the lamellar periods increased. Correlation function analysis showed very clearly that the long‐range order decreased because of grafting and sulfonation processes. For those samples that showed good proton conductivity, the lamellar period also increased because of sulfonation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene onto poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐graft‐poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVDF‐g‐PVBC) membranes was investigated. Novel membranes were designed for fuel‐cell applications. The benzyl chloride groups in the PVDF‐g‐PVBC membranes functioned as initiators, and a Cu‐based catalytic system with the general formula Cu(n)Xn/ligand [where X is Cl or Br and the ligand is 2,2′‐bipyridyl (bpy)] was employed for the ATRP. In addition, 10 vol % dimethylformamide was added for increased solubility of the catalyst complex in styrene. The system was homogeneous, except for the membrane, when the initiator/copper halide/ligand/monomer molar ratio was 1/1/3/500. As anticipated, the fastest polymerization rate of styrene was observed with the copper bromide/bpy‐based catalyst system. The reaction rate was strongly temperature‐dependent within the studied temperature interval of 100–130 °C. The degree of grafting increased linearly with time, thereby indicating first‐order kinetics, regardless of the polymerization temperature. Furthermore, 120 °C was the maximum polymerization temperature that could be used in practice because the membrane structure was destroyed at higher temperatures. The degree of styrene grafting reached 400% after 3 h at 120 °C. Such a high degree of grafting could not be reached with conventional uncontrolled radiation‐induced grafting methods because of termination reactions. On the basis of an Arrhenius plot, the activation energy for the homogeneous ATRP of styrene was 217 kJ/mol. The prepared membranes became proton‐conducting after sulfonation of the polystyrene grafts. The highest conductivity measured for the prepared membranes was 70 mS/cm, which is comparable to the values normally measured for commercial Nafion membranes. The scanning electron microscopy/energy‐dispersive X‐ray results showed that the membranes had to be grafted through the matrix with both PVBC and polystyrene to become proton‐conducting after sulfonation. In addition, PVDF‐g‐[PVBC‐g‐(styrene‐blocktert‐butyl acrylate)] membranes were also synthesized by ATRP. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The transport behavior of uncrosslinked and crosslinked poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) membranes has been investigated using normal alkanes as probe molecules, in the temperature range of 30–60 °C. Benzoyl peroxide was used for crosslinking the matrix. It has been observed that, a critical concentration of crosslinker is necessary for maximum solvent uptake, followed by a decrease at higher concentration. The effect of free volume on liquid transport was investigated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The mechanism of transport has been found to deviate from the regular Fickian behavior. The dependence of the transport coefficients on crosslink density, nature of penetrants, and temperature was studied. The polymer–solvent interaction parameter, enthalpy, and entropy of sorption have also been estimated from the transport data. The affine and phantom models for chemical crosslinks were used to predict the nature of crosslinks. Finally, the experimental sorption data were compared with theoretical predictions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2470–2480, 2007  相似文献

Partially sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PESS) was synthesized and methacrylated via reaction with glycidyl methacrylate (PESSGMA) and cross‐linked via radical polymerization with styrene and vinyl‐phosphonic acid (VPA). The chemical structures of the synthesized pre‐polymers were characterized via FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods and molecular weight was determined via GPC. Membranes of these polymers were prepared via solution casting method. The crosslinking of the PESS polymer reduced IEC, proton conductivity, swelling in water, and methanol permeability of the membranes while increasing the modulus and the glass transition temperature. However, the introduction of the VPA comonomer increased the proton conductivity while maintaining excellent resistance to methanol cross‐over, which was significantly higher as compared with both PESS and the commercial Nafion membranes. Membranes of PESSGMA copolymers incorporating VPA, exhibited proton conductivity values at 60 °C in the range of 16–32 mS cm−1 and methanol permeability values in the range of 6.52 × 10−9 – 1.92 × 10−8 cm2 s−1. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Porous polyelectrolyte membranes stable in a highly ionic environment are obtained by covalent crosslinking of an imidazolium‐based poly(ionic liquid). The crosslinking reaction involves the UV light‐induced thiol–ene (click) chemistry, and the phase separation, occurring during the crosslinking step, generates a fully interconnected porous structure in the membrane. The porosity is on the order of the micrometer scale and the membrane shows a gradient of pore size across the membrane cross‐section. The membrane can separate polystyrene latex particles of different size and undergoes actuation in contact with acetone due to the asymmetric porous structure.  相似文献

A novel process comprising the UV‐induced photografting of styrene into poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films and subsequent sulfonation has been developed for preparing proton‐conducting membranes. Although under UV irradiation the initial radicals were mainly generated on the surface of the PTFE films by the action of photosensitizers such as xanthone and benzoyl peroxide, the graft chains were readily propagated into the PTFE films. The sulfonation of the grafted films was performed in a chlorosulfonic acid solution. Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the grafted and sulfonated membranes. With a view to use in fuel cells, the proton conductivity, water uptake, and mechanical properties of the prepared membranes were measured. Even through the degree of grafting was lower than 10%, the proton conductivity in the thickness direction of the newly prepared membranes could reach a value similar to that of a Nafion membrane. In comparison with γ‐ray radiation grafting, UV‐induced photografting is very simple and safe and is less damaging to the membranes because significant degradation of the PTFE main chains can be avoided. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Resonance Raman spectra of poly(p‐phenylenebenzobisoxazole) (PBO), poly(p‐phenylenebenzobisthazole) (PBZT), and poly(pyridobisimidazole) (PIPD) were measured. In the case of PBO, no large dependence on wavelength of excited laser can be observed, whereas in the cases of PBZT and PIPD, the spectra depends on wavelength of excited laser. This difference may be attributed to the colors of the samples: PBO is gold, and PBZT and PIPD are metallic blue, which show the different conjugated states. The spectra of PBO are rather simpler than those of PBZT and PIPD. This is considered to be reflected by the fact that only a chain passes through the unit cell of PBO, while two chains pass through the unit cell of PBZT and PIPD. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Salt‐containing membranes based on polymethacrylates having poly(ethylene carbonate‐co‐ethylene oxide) side chains, as well as their blends with poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP), have been studied. Self‐supportive ion conductive membranes were prepared by casting films of methacrylate functional poly(ethylene carbonate‐co‐ethylene oxide) macromonomers containing lithium bis(trifluorosulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt, followed by irradiation with UV‐light to polymerize the methacrylate units in situ. Homogenous electrolyte membranes based on the polymerized macromonomers showed a conductivity of 6.3 × 10?6 S cm?1 at 20 °C. The preparation of polymer blends, by the addition of PVDF‐HFP to the electrolytes, was found to greatly improve the mechanical properties. However, the addition led to an increase of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the ion conductive phase by ~5 °C. The conductivity of the blend membranes was thus lower in relation to the corresponding homogeneous polymer electrolytes, and 2.5 × 10?6 S cm?1 was recorded for a membrane containing 10 wt % PVDF‐HFP at 20 °C. Increasing the salt concentration in the blend membranes was found to increase the Tg of the ion conductive component and decrease the propensity for the crystallization of the PVDF‐HFP component. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dilactone, 13,26‐dihexyl‐1,14‐dioxacyclohexacosane‐2,15‐dione (12‐HSAD), was synthesized by lipase‐catalyzed reaction of 12‐hydroxystearic acid (12‐HSA) in high yield. It was subjected to the ring‐opening polymerization with various catalysts to obtain poly(12‐hydroxystearate) (PHS). The polymerization system of 12‐HSAD showed an interesting polymerization behavior because of its large ring system. The polymers produced by this polymerization were directly reacted with L ‐lactide to obtain a diblock copolymer of poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly‐(12‐hydroxystearate) (PLLA‐b‐PHS). Characterization of the resultant copolymers was also performed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Biodegradable poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) copolymers with different L ‐lactide (LLA)/ε‐caprolactone (CL) ratios of 75/25 and 50/50 were electrospun into fine fibers. The deformation behavior of the electrospun membranes with randomly oriented structures was evaluated under uniaxial tensile loading. The electrospun membrane with a higher LLA content showed a significantly higher tensile modulus but a similar maximum stress and a lower ultimate strain in comparison with the membrane with a lower LLA content. The beaded fibers that formed in the membranes caused lower tensile properties. X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry results suggested that the electrospun fine fibers developed highly oriented structures in CL‐unit sequences during the electrospinning process even though the concentration was only 25 wt %. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to study the interactions among LiCl, ZnCl2, and AlCl3 with N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) and poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN). It was observed that all three salts complex with DMF as well as PAN. The strength of the cation interaction with the >C?O oxygen of DMF was found to be higher than that with the ? CN group of PAN. The >C?O stretching frequency of DMF with ZnCl2 was red shifted, indicating stronger complex formation compared with other two cations. With the addition of salt, the salt–DMF pseudo solvent was found to become a θ solvent for PAN compared with neat DMF. This change in PAN solvation power was primarily the result of DMF–salt complexation. As a result of the complexation, Mark‐Houwink constant a, was found to reduce from 0.75 (for pure DMF) to ~0.6 for DMF–salt solvents, indicating decreased PAN chain expansion. Comparison of intrinsic viscosity [η] values indicated that addition of salts to PAN–DMF solutions resulted in: (i) decrease in the DMF solvation power, which causes less expanded polymer coils, and (ii) increased interpolymer chain entanglements via salt‐promoted chain association. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
