A generalized type of graph covering, called a “Wrapped quasicovering” (wqc) is defined. If K, L are graphs dually embedded in an orientable surface S, then we may lift these embeddings to embeddings of dual graphs K?,L? in orientable surfaces S?, such that S? are branched covers of S and the restrictions of the branched coverings to K?,L? are wqc's of K, L. the theory is applied to obtain genus embeddings of composition graphs G[nK1] from embeddings of “quotient” graphs G.  相似文献

A rectilinear drawing of a graph is one where each edge is drawn as a straight-line segment, and the rectilinear crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings over all rectilinear drawings. We describe, for every integer k ≥ 4, a class of graphs of crossing number k, but unbounded rectilinear crossing number. This is best possible since the rectilinear crossing number is equal to the crossing number whenever the latter is at most 3. Further, if we consider drawings where each edge is drawn as a polygonal line segment with at most one break point, then the resulting crossing number is at most quadratic in the regular crossing number. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Let X be a vertex‐transitive graph, that is, the automorphism group Aut(X) of X is transitive on the vertex set of X. The graph X is said to be symmetric if Aut(X) is transitive on the arc set of X. suppose that Aut(X) has two orbits of the same length on the arc set of X. Then X is said to be half‐arc‐transitive or half‐edge‐transitive if Aut(X) has one or two orbits on the edge set of X, respectively. Stabilizers of symmetric and half‐arc‐transitive graphs have been investigated by many authors. For example, see Tutte [Canad J Math 11 (1959), 621–624] and Conder and Maru?i? [J Combin Theory Ser B 88 (2003), 67–76]. It is trivial to construct connected tetravalent symmetric graphs with arbitrarily large stabilizers, and by Maru?i? [Discrete Math 299 (2005), 180–193], connected tetravalent half‐arc‐transitive graphs can have arbitrarily large stabilizers. In this article, we show that connected tetravalent half‐edge‐transitive graphs can also have arbitrarily large stabilizers. A Cayley graph Cay(G, S) on a group G is said to be normal if the right regular representation R(G) of G is normal in Aut(Cay(G, S)). There are only a few known examples of connected tetravalent non‐normal Cayley graphs on non‐abelian simple groups. In this article, we give a sufficient condition for non‐normal Cayley graphs and by using the condition, infinitely many connected tetravalent non‐normal Cayley graphs are constructed. As an application, all connected tetravalent non‐normal Cayley graphs on the alternating group A6 are determined. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory  相似文献

Let ck = crk (G) denote the minimum number of edge crossings when a graph G is drawn on an orientable surface of genus k. The (orientable) crossing sequence co, c1,c2…encodes the trade‐off between adding handles and decreasing crossings. We focus on sequences of the type co > c1 > c2 = 0; equivalently, we study the planar and toroidal crossing number of doubly‐toroidal graphs. For every ? > 0 we construct graphs whose orientable crossing sequence satisfies c1/co > 5/6??. In other words, we construct graphs where the addition of one handle can save roughly 1/6th of the crossings, but the addition of a second handle can save five times more crossings. We similarly define the non‐orientable crossing sequence ?0,?1,?2, ··· for drawings on non‐orientable surfaces. We show that for every ?0 > ?1 > 0 there exists a graph with non‐orientable crossing sequence ?0, ?1, 0. We conjecture that every strictly‐decreasing sequence of non‐negative integers can be both an orientable crossing sequence and a non‐orientable crossing sequence (with different graphs). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Let γ(G) be the domination number of graph G, thus a graph G is k‐edge‐critical if γ (G) = k, and for every nonadjacent pair of vertices u and υ, γ(G + uυ) = k?1. In Chapter 16 of the book “Domination in Graphs—Advanced Topics,” D. Sumner cites a conjecture of E. Wojcicka under the form “3‐connected 4‐critical graphs are Hamiltonian and perhaps, in general (i.e., for any k ≥ 4), (k?1)‐connected, k‐edge‐critical graphs are Hamiltonian.” In this paper, we prove that the conjecture is not true for k = 4 by constructing a class of 3‐connected 4‐edge‐critical non‐Hamiltonian graphs. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Whitney’s 2-switching theorem states that any two embeddings of a 2-connected planar graph in S 2 can be connected via a sequence of simple operations, named 2-switching. In this paper, we obtain two operations on planar graphs from the view point of knot theory, which we will term “twisting” and “2-switching” respectively. With the twisting operation, we give a pure geometrical proof of Whitney’s 2-switching theorem. As an application, we obtain some relationships between two knots which correspond to the same signed planar graph. Besides, we also give a necessary and sufficient condition to test whether a pair of reduced alternating diagrams are mutants of each other by their signed planar graphs.  相似文献

Two spatial embeddings of a graph are said to be delta (resp. sharp) edge‐homotopic if they are transformed into each other by self delta (resp. sharp) moves and ambient isotopies. We show that any two spatial embeddings of a graph are delta (resp. sharp) edge‐homotopic if and only if the graph does not contain a subgraph which is homeomorphic to the theta graph or the disjoint union of two 1‐spheres, or equivalently G is homeomorphic to a bouquet. We show that if a graph has maximum degree d and crossing number k, its rectilinear crossing number is at most O(dk2). Hence for graphs of bounded degree, the crossing number and the rectilinear crossing number are bounded as functions of one another. We also obtain a generalization of Tutte's theorem on convex embeddings of 3-connected plane graphs. © 1929 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A graph is strongly even‐cycle decomposable if the edge set of every subdivision with an even number of edges can be partitioned into cycles of even length. We prove that several fundamental composition operations that preserve the property of being Eulerian also yield strongly even‐cycle decomposable graphs. As an easy application of our theorems, we give an exact characterization of the set of strongly even‐cycle decomposable cographs.  相似文献

A set S of edge‐disjoint hamilton cycles in a graph G is said to be maximal if the edges in the hamilton cycles in S induce a subgraph H of G such that G ? E(H) contains no hamilton cycles. In this context, the spectrum S(G) of a graph G is the set of integers m such that G contains a maximal set of m edge‐disjoint hamilton cycles. This spectrum has previously been determined for all complete graphs and for all complete bipartite graphs. In this paper, we extend these results to the complete multipartite graphs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 43: 49–66, 2003  相似文献

The k-planar crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings of its edges over all possible drawings of the graph in k planes. We propose algorithms and methods for k-planar drawings of general graphs together with lower bound techniques. We give exact results for the k-planar crossing number of K2k+1,q, for k?2. We prove tight bounds for complete graphs. We also study the rectilinear k-planar crossing number.  相似文献

A drawing of a graph is pseudolinear if there is a pseudoline arrangement such that each pseudoline contains exactly one edge of the drawing. The pseudolinear crossing number of a graph G is the minimum number of pairwise crossings of edges in a pseudolinear drawing of G. We establish several facts on the pseudolinear crossing number, including its computational complexity and its relationship to the usual crossing number and to the rectilinear crossing number. This investigation was motivated by open questions and issues raised by Marcus Schaefer in his comprehensive survey of the many variants of the crossing number of a graph.

A complete coloring of a simple graph G is a proper vertex coloring such that each pair of colors appears together on at least one edge. The achromatic number ψ(G) is the greatest number of colors in such a coloring. We say a class of graphs is fragmentable if for any positive ε, there is a constant C such that any graph in the class can be broken into pieces of size at most C by removing a proportion at most ε of the vertices. Examples include planar graphs and grids of fixed dimension. Determining the achromatic number of a graph is NP‐complete in general, even for trees, and the achromatic number is known precisely for only very restricted classes of graphs. We extend these classes very considerably, by giving, for graphs in any class which is fragmentable, triangle‐free, and of bounded degree, a necessary and sufficient condition for a sufficiently large graph to have a complete coloring with a given number of colors. For the same classes, this gives a tight lower bound for the achromatic number of sufficiently large graphs, and shows that the achromatic number can be determined in polynomial time. As examples, we give exact values of the achromatic number for several graph families. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 65:94–114, 2010  相似文献

The restricted‐edge‐connectivity of a graph G, denoted by λ′(G), is defined as the minimum cardinality over all edge‐cuts S of G, where GS contains no isolated vertices. The graph G is called λ′‐optimal, if λ′(G) = ξ(G), where ξ(G) is the minimum edge‐degree in G. A graph is super‐edge‐connected, if every minimum edge‐cut consists of edges adjacent to a vertex of minimum degree. In this paper, we present sufficient conditions for arbitrary, triangle‐free, and bipartite graphs to be λ′‐optimal, as well as conditions depending on the clique number. These conditions imply super‐edge‐connectivity, if δ (G) ≥ 3, and the equality of edge‐connectivity and minimum degree. Different examples will show that these conditions are best possible and independent of other results in this area. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 48: 228–246, 2005  相似文献

For a connected graph the restricted edge‐connectivity λ′(G) is defined as the minimum cardinality of an edge‐cut over all edge‐cuts S such that there are no isolated vertices in GS. A graph G is said to be λ′‐optimal if λ′(G) = ξ(G), where ξ(G) is the minimum edge‐degree in G defined as ξ(G) = min{d(u) + d(v) ? 2:uvE(G)}, d(u) denoting the degree of a vertex u. A. Hellwig and L. Volkmann [Sufficient conditions for λ′‐optimality in graphs of diameter 2, Discrete Math 283 (2004), 113–120] gave a sufficient condition for λ′‐optimality in graphs of diameter 2. In this paper, we generalize this condition in graphs of diameter g ? 1, g being the girth of the graph, and show that a graph G with diameter at most g ? 2 is λ′‐optimal. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Motivated by an old conjecture of P. Erdős and V. Neumann‐Lara, our aim is to investigate digraphs with uncountable dichromatic number and orientations of undirected graphs with uncountable chromatic number. A graph has uncountable chromatic number if its vertices cannot be covered by countably many independent sets, and a digraph has uncountable dichromatic number if its vertices cannot be covered by countably many acyclic sets. We prove that, consistently, there are digraphs with uncountable dichromatic number and arbitrarily large digirth; this is in surprising contrast with the undirected case: any graph with uncountable chromatic number contains a 4‐cycle. Next, we prove that several well‐known graphs (uncountable complete graphs, certain comparability graphs, and shift graphs) admit orientations with uncountable dichromatic number in ZFC. However, we show that the statement “every graph G of size and chromatic number ω1 has an orientation D with uncountable dichromatic number” is independent of ZFC. We end the article with several open problems.  相似文献

A graph is said to be projective-planar if it is nonplanar and is embeddable in a projective plane. In this paper we show that the numbers of projectiveplanar embeddings (up to equivalence) of all 5-connected graphs have an upper bound c(?120).  相似文献

We say that a graph G is k-Pfaffian if the generating function of its perfect matchings can be expressed as a linear combination of Pfaffians of k matrices corresponding to orientations of G. We prove that 3-Pfaffian graphs are 1-Pfaffian, 5-Pfaffian graphs are 4-Pfaffian and that a graph is 4-Pfaffian if and only if it can be drawn on the torus (possibly with crossings) so that every perfect matching intersects itself an even number of times. We state conjectures and prove partial results for k>5. The author was supported in part by NSF under Grant No. DMS-0200595 and DMS-0701033.  相似文献
