The transient behavior of a semiconductor device consists of a Poisson equa-tion for the electric potential and of two nonlinear parabolic equations for the electrondensity and hole density. The electric potential equation is discretized by a mixed finiteelement method. The electron and hole density equations are treated by implicit-explicitmultistep finite element methods. The schemes are very efficient. The optimal order errorestimates both in time and space are derived.  相似文献

Two‐grid mixed finite element schemes are developed for solving both steady state and unsteady state nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The schemes use discretizations based on a mixed finite‐element method. The two‐grid approach yields iterative procedures for solving the nonlinear discrete equations. The idea is to relegate all of the Newton‐like iterations to grids much coarser than the final one, with no loss in order of accuracy. Numerical tests are performed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Implicit–explicit multistep characteristic methods are given for convection‐dominated diffusion equations. Multistep difference along characteristics of the one‐order hyperbolic part of the equation is used for discretization in time, and finite element method is used to discrete the space variables. The resulting schemes are consistent, stable and very efficient. Optimal‐rate of convergence is proved. Also, a note is given for a paper published earlier© 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article proposes a class of high‐order energy‐preserving schemes for the improved Boussinesq equation. To derive the energy‐preserving schemes, we first discretize the improved Boussinesq equation by Fourier pseudospectral method, which leads to a finite‐dimensional Hamiltonian system. Then, the obtained semidiscrete system is solved by Hamiltonian boundary value methods, which is a newly developed class of energy‐preserving methods. The proposed schemes can reach spectral precision in space, and in time can reach second‐order, fourth‐order, and sixth‐order accuracy, respectively. Moreover, the proposed schemes can conserve the discrete mass and energy to within machine precision. Furthermore, to show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed methods, the proposed methods are compared with the finite difference methods and the finite volume element method. The results of several numerical experiments are given for the propagation of the single solitary wave, the interaction of two solitary waves and the wave break‐up.  相似文献

We develop 2‐grid schemes for solving nonlinear reaction‐diffusion systems: where p = (p, q) is an unknown vector‐valued function. The schemes use discretizations based on a mixed finite‐element method. The 2‐grid approach yields iterative procedures for solving the nonlinear discrete equations. The idea is to relegate all the Newton‐like iterations to grids much coarser than the final one, with no loss in order of accuracy. The iterative algorithms examined here extend a method developed earlier for single reaction‐diffusion equations. An application to prepattern formation in mathematical biology illustrates the method's effectiveness. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 15: 589–604, 1999  相似文献

We extend previous work on nonstandard finite difference schemes for one‐space dimension, nonlinear reaction–diffusion PDEs to the case where linear advection is included. The use of a positivity condition allows the determination of a functional relation between the time and space step‐sizes, and provides schemes that are explicit. The Fisher equation is used to illustrate the method. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 16: 361–364, 2000  相似文献

In this article, we combine finite difference approximations (for spatial derivatives) and collocation techniques (for the time component) to numerically solve the two‐dimensional heat equation. We employ, respectively, second‐order and fourth‐order schemes for the spatial derivatives, and the discretization method gives rise to a linear system of equations. We show that the matrix of the system is nonsingular. Numerical experiments carried out on serial computers show the unconditional stability of the proposed method and the high accuracy achieved by the fourth‐order scheme. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this note, a non‐standard finite difference (NSFD) scheme is proposed for an advection‐diffusion‐reaction equation with nonlinear reaction term. We first study the diffusion‐free case of this equation, that is, an advection‐reaction equation. Two exact finite difference schemes are constructed for the advection‐reaction equation by the method of characteristics. As these exact schemes are complicated and are not convenient to use, an NSFD scheme is derived from the exact scheme. Then, the NSFD scheme for the advection‐reaction equation is combined with a finite difference space‐approximation of the diffusion term to provide a NSFD scheme for the advection‐diffusion‐reaction equation. This new scheme could preserve the fixed points, the positivity, and the boundedness of the solution of the original equation. Numerical experiments verify the validity of our analytical results. In this article, we propose a two‐level finite element method to analyze the approximate solutions of the stationary Navier‐Stokes equations based on a stabilized local projection. The local projection allows to circumvent the Babuska‐Brezzi condition by using equal‐order finite element pairs. The local projection can be used to stabilize high equal‐order finite element pairs. The proposed method combines the local projection stabilization method and the two‐level method under the assumption of the uniqueness condition. The two‐level method consists of solving a nonlinear equation on the coarse mesh and solving a linear equation on fine mesh. The nonlinear equation is solved by the one‐step Newtonian iteration method. In the rest of this article, we show the error analysis of the lowest equal‐order finite element pair and provide convergence rate of approximate solutions. Furthermore, the numerical illustrations coincide with the theoretical analysis expectations. From the view of computational time, the results show that the two‐level method is effective to solve the stationary Navier‐Stokes equations. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, new high‐order backward semi‐Lagrangian methods are developed to solve nonlinear advection–diffusion type problems, which are realized using high‐order characteristic‐tracking strategies. The proposed characteristic‐tracking strategies are second‐order L‐stable and third‐order L(α)‐stable methods, which are based on a classical implicit multistep method combined with a error‐correction method. We also use backward differentiation formulas and the fourth‐order finite‐difference scheme for diffusion problem discretization in the temporal and spatial domains, respectively. To demonstrate the adaptability and efficiency of these time‐discretization strategies, we apply these methods to nonlinear advection–diffusion type problems such as the viscous Burgers' equation. Through simulations, not only the temporal and spatial accuracies are numerically evaluated but also the proposed methods are shown to be superior to the compared existing characteristic‐tracking methods under the same rates of convergence in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Finally, we have shown that the proposed method well preserves the energy and mass when the viscosity coefficient becomes zero.  相似文献

Semi‐Lagrangian finite volume schemes for the numerical approximation of linear advection equations are presented. These schemes are constructed so that the conservation properties are preserved by the numerical approximation. This is achieved using an interpolation procedure based on area‐weighting. Numerical results are presented illustrating some of the features of these schemes. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 17:403–425, 2001  相似文献

We present a scheme for solving two‐dimensional, nonlinear reaction‐diffusion equations, using a mixed finite‐element method. To linearize the mixed‐method equations, we use a two grid scheme that relegates all the Newton‐like iterations to a grid ΔH much coarser than the original one Δh, with no loss in order of accuracy so long as the mesh sizes obey . The use of a multigrid‐based solver for the indefinite linear systems that arise at each coarse‐grid iteration, as well as for the similar system that arises on the fine grid, allows for even greater efficiency. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Time‐dependent differential equations can be solved using the concept of method of lines (MOL) together with the boundary element (BE) representation for the spatial linear part of the equation. The BE method alleviates the need for spatial discretization and casts the problem in an integral format. Hence errors associated with the numerical approximation of the spatial derivatives are totally eliminated. An element level local cubic approximation is used for the variable at each time step to facilitate the time marching and the nonlinear terms are represented in a semi‐implicit manner by a local linearization at each time step. The accuracy of the method has been illustrated on a number of test problems of engineering significance. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 2006  相似文献

We investigate the relationship between finite volume and finite element approximations for the lower‐order elements, both conforming and nonconforming for the Stokes equations. These elements include conforming, linear velocity‐constant pressure on triangles, conforming bilinear velocity‐constant pressure on rectangles and their macro‐element versions, and nonconforming linear velocity‐constant pressure on triangles and nonconforming rotated bilinear velocity‐constant pressure on rectangles. By applying the relationship between the two methods, we obtain the convergence finite volume solutions for the Stokes equations. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We introduce a new discontinuous Galerkin approach for time integration. On the basis of the method of weighted residual, numerical quadratures are employed in the finite element time discretization to account for general nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Many different conditions, including explicit, implicit, and symplectic conditions, are enforced for the test functions in the variational analysis to obtain desirable features of the resulting time‐stepping scheme. The proposed discontinuous Galerkin approach provides a unified framework to derive various time‐stepping schemes, such as low‐order one‐step methods, Runge–Kutta methods, and multistep methods. On the basis of the proposed framework, several explicit Runge–Kutta methods of different orders are constructed. The derivation of symplectic Runge–Kutta methods has also been realized. The proposed framework allows the optimization of new schemes in terms of several characteristics, such as accuracy, sparseness, and stability. The accuracy optimization is performed on the basis of an analytical form of the error estimation function for a linear test initial value problem. Schemes with higher formal order of accuracy are found to provide more accurate solutions. We have also explored the optimization potential of sparseness, which is related to the general compressive sensing in signal/imaging processing. Two critical dimensions of the stability region, that is, maximal intervals along the imaginary and negative real axes, are employed as the criteria for stability optimization. This gives the largest Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy time steps in solving hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations, respectively. Numerical experiments are conducted to validate the optimized time‐stepping schemes. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, we develop a two‐grid algorithm for nonlinear reaction diffusion equation (with nonlinear compressibility coefficient) discretized by expanded mixed finite element method. The key point is to use two‐grid scheme to linearize the nonlinear term in the equations. The main procedure of the algorithm is solving a small‐scaled nonlinear equations on the coarse grid and dealing with a linearized system on the fine space using the Newton iteration with the coarse grid solution. Error estimation to the expanded mixed finite element solution is analyzed in detail. We also show that two‐grid solution achieves the same accuracy as long as the mesh sizes satisfy H = O(h1/2). Two numerical experiments are given to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2013  相似文献

The aim of this article is to present several computational algorithms for numerical solutions of a nonlinear finite difference system that represents a finite difference approximation of a class of fourth‐order elliptic boundary value problems. The numerical algorithms are based on the method of upper and lower solutions and its associated monotone iterations. Three linear monotone iterative schemes are given, and each iterative scheme yields two sequences, which converge monotonically from above and below, respectively, to a maximal solution and a minimal solution of the finite difference system. This monotone convergence property leads to upper and lower bounds of the solution in each iteration as well as an existence‐comparison theorem for the finite difference system. Sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution and some techniques for the construction of upper and lower solutions are obtained, and numerical results for a two‐point boundary‐value problem with known analytical solution are given. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
