Let Σ andS be two real Hilbert spaces and Σ0 a subspace of Σ. Moreover, supposeT:S→Σ be a bounded linear operator whose rangeT (S) is contained in Σ0, andE:S→Σ be a linear operator such that the productE T:SS is a bounded operator with a closed range. In this framework we present an artifice from which the alternative theorem for the equationE u=q(u0,q ?S) follows. In this paper we consider the equationu tt +u xxxx =0 for a vibrating rod supported at its end-points. We study the problem of determining the shape of the rod,u(·,0), knowingu(·,T). We see that the solution is unique ifT belongs to a certain dense subsetS of (0,+∞). IfT belongs toS, u(·,0) does not depend continuously onu(·,T). In this case, with the assumption of a bounded initial energy of the rod, we get stability estimates foru(·,0).  相似文献

In this article, a semigroup approach is presented for the mathematical analysis of the inverse coefficient problems of identifying the unknown diffusion coefficient k(u(x, t)) in the quasi‐linear parabolic equation ut(x, t)=(k(u(x, t))ux(x, t))x, with Dirichlet boundary conditions ux(0, t)=ψ0, u(1, t)=ψ1. The main purpose of this work is to analyze the distinguishability of the input–output mappings Φ[·] : ??→C1[0, T], Ψ[·] : ??→C1[0, T] using semigroup theory. In this article, it is shown that if the null space of semigroups T(t) and S(t) consists of only a zero function, then the input–output mappings Φ[·] and Ψ[·] have the distinguishability property. Summary We study the spectrum of the Laplacian acting on 1-forms for a surface of revolution diffeomorphic toS 2 and obtain, for theS 1 invariant spectrum, a trace formula for the eigenvalues of its Green’s operator. The trace formula is used to “hear” negative curvature for some metrics and to prove the existence of metrics onS 2 with rather unusual spectral characteristics. It is shown that the infimum over all choices of the operator X of the norm of the operator matrix [ ], whose entries are operators on Hilbert spaces, is the minimum of the norms of the first row and of the first column, and an explicit formula for a minimizing X is given in terms of A, B, C, and their adjoints. A generalization of a fundamental theorem on Hankel operators is seen to follow immediately from this result. The formula is then used to prove a generalization of the Sz. Nagy-Foiaş lifting theorem which in turn yields interpolation theorems for analytic functions from the unit disc to a von Neumann algebra. The generalized lifting theorem also implies a generalization of the theorem of Ando asserting the existence of commuting unitary dilations for a pair of commuting contractions and a generalized von Neumann inequality ∑ ajkSjTk sup{ ∑ Ajkzjwk ¦ ¦ z ¦ = ¦ w ¦ = 1} for operator polynomials ∑ AjkSjTk in two commuting contractions S, T with operator coefficients Ajk which commute with S, T and their adjoints.  相似文献

In three spaces, we find exact classical solutions of the boundary-value periodic problem utt - a2uxx = g(x, t) u(0, t) = u(π, t) = 0, u(x, t + T) = u(x, t), x ∈ ℝ, t ∈ ℝ. Let T and S be invertible measure preserving transformations of a probability measure space (X, ℬ, μ). We prove that if the group generated by T and S is nilpotent, then exists in L 2-norm for any u, vL (X, ℬ, μ). We also show that for A∈ℬ with μ(A)>0 one has . By the way of contrast, we bring examples showing that if measure preserving transformations T, S generate a solvable group, then (i) the above limits do not have to exist; (ii) the double recurrence property fails, that is, for some A∈ℬ, μ(A)>0, one may have μ(AT -n AS - n A)=0 for all n∈ℕ. Finally, we show that when T and S generate a nilpotent group of class ≤c, in L 2(X) for all u, vL (X) if and only if T×S is ergodic on X×X and the group generated by T -1 S, T -2 S 2,..., T -c S c acts ergodically on X. Abstract

In this work we analyze the existence of solutions that blow-up in finite time for a reaction–diffusion equation u t  ? Δu = f(x, u) in a smooth domain Ω with nonlinear boundary conditions ?u/?n = g(x, u). We show that, if locally around some point of the boundary, we have f(x, u) = ?βu p , β ≥ 0, and g(x, u) = u q then, blow-up in finite time occurs if 2q > p + 1 or if 2q = p + 1 and β < q. Moreover, if we denote by T b the blow-up time, we show that a proper continuation of the blowing up solutions are pinned to the value infinity for some time interval [T, τ] with T b  ≤ T < τ. On the other hand, for the case f(x, u) = ?βu p , for all x and u, with β > 0 and p > 1, we show that blow-up occurs only on the boundary.  相似文献

In this paper we study the following problem: ut−Δu=−f(u) in Ω×(0, T)≡QT, ∂u ∂n=g(u) on ∂Ω×(0, T)≡ST, u(x, 0)=u0(x) in Ω , where Ω⊂ℝN is a smooth bounded domain, f and g are smooth functions which are positive when the argument is positive, and u0(x)>0 satisfies some smooth and compatibility conditions to guarantee the classical solution u(x, t) exists. We first obtain some existence and non-existence results for the corresponding elliptic problems. Then, we establish certain conditions for a finite time blow-up and global boundedness of the solutions of the time-dependent problem. Further, we analyse systems with same kind of boundary conditions and find some blow-up results. In the last section, we study the corresponding elliptic problems in one-dimensional domain. Let u be a (bounded, linear) operator from a Hilbert space ℋ into the Banach space C(T), the space of continuous functions on the compact metric space T. We introduce and investigate numbers τ n (u), n≥1, measuring the degree of determinism of the operator u. The slower τ n (u) decreases, the less determined are functions in the range of u by their values on a certain set of points. It is shown that n −1/2 τ n (u)≤2e n (u), where e n (u) are the (dyadic) entropy numbers of u. Furthermore, we transform the notion of strong local nondeterminism from the language of stochastic processes into that of linear operators. This property, together with a lower entropy estimate for the compact space T, leads to a lower estimate for τ n (u), hence also for e n (u). These results are used to prove sharp lower entropy estimates for some integral operators, among them, Riemann–Liouville operators with values in C(T) for some fractal set T. Some multi-dimensional extensions are treated as well.   相似文献
