Obtained in this work are the stress intensity factors for two interacting cracks, one of which coincides with the axis of material orthotropy and the other is oriented in a general direction. The direction of the applied stress can be varied with reference to the cracks and/or the axes of material anisotropy. Mode I and II stress intensity factors are displayed to show their variations with the geometric, material and load parameters.  相似文献

A singular integral equation containing the crack opening displacement (COD) is developed for solving plane elasticity problems. The crack may contain any number of kinks at different intervals and orientations, such as a saw-tooth shape. Cracks in the form of a sine wave can also be treated. The crack tip stress intensity factors are evaluated for a variety of crack shapes and the results are displayed graphically. The distance between the crack tips is found to be a dominant factor on the crack tip stress intensity while the angle between the tangent to the crack tip and load direction determines the proportion of Mode I and II stress intensity factors.  相似文献

The dynamic propagation of a semi-infinite crack in a finite linear viscoelastic strip subjected to Mode I loading is investigated. Through the use of integral transforms the problem is reduced to solving a Wiener-Hopf equation. The asymptotic properties of the transforms are exploited to establish the stress intensity factor. Plane-stress and plane-strain stress intensity factors as a function of crack speed for both fully-clamped and shear-free lateral boundaries are presented for the standard linear viscoelastic solid. Comparisons are made with previously obtained asymptotic stress intensity factors and with stress intensity factors for the equivalent elastic strips.  相似文献

Weight functions, which give stress intensity factors in terms of applied loading, are constructed, for three-dimensional time-dependent loading of a semi-infinite crack, propagating at uniform speed. Both a model problem, governed by a scalar wave equation, and the full vectorial problem for Mode I loading, are considered. The medium through which the crack propagates is viscoelastic; the approach is general but explicit formulae are given when the medium is a Maxwell fluid. The weight functions are exploited to develop formulae for the first-order perturbations of stress intensity factors when the crack edge is no longer straight but becomes slightly wavy. Implications for stability, and for “crack front waves” in the case of the Mode I problem, are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, a problem of a crack in an orthotropic strip is studied under plane strain conditions. It is assumed that normal displacements and shear stresses do not act on neither of the boundaries of the strip. Cauchy-type singular integral equation for the crack problem is derived by using the theory of plane elasticity and the Fourier transformation technique. A quadrature collocation approach is adopted for the numerical solutions of the singular integral equation. The effect of relative thickness and mechanical properties of strip on Mode I stress intensity factors (SIFs) are examined under different loading conditions. Some sample results are given for SIFs; also, material orthotropy and geometrical effects are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Dynamic stress intensification around the crack in a layered composite subjected to an externally applied magnetic field is investigated. The effect of magnetic force is accounted for in the analysis as a body force. It tends to introduce damping into the system and reduces the intensification of the crack tip stress field. This is illustrated through the variations of the Mode I and Mode II stress intensity factors with time in addition to the influence of the geometric and material parameters of the composite structure. Numerical results are presented and discussed as the magnetic flux is varied with the physical parameters.  相似文献

A generalized variational approach together with eigenfunction expansion is applied to determine the stress intensity factors for interface crack in finite size specimen. Application is also made of the complex potentials such that a complex stress intensity factor with components corresponding to the Mode I and II stress intensity factors can be identified with one of the leading coefficients in the eigenfunction expansion. Obtained are the numerical values of the stress intensity factors for an interface edge crack in a bimaterial rectangular specimen. The outside boundary is subjected to uniform stress normal and parallel to the crack. Solutions are also obtained for the same crack aand specimen geoinetry is subjected to a pair of equal and opposite concentrated forces along the open end away from the edge crack. The third example pertains to the case of three-point bending where the centre concentrated load is directed along the interface dividing the two materials. Numerical results are obtained for four different combinations of the bimaterial specimen with an interface edge crack.  相似文献

Plane-strain crack-tip stress solutions for anisotropic perfectly-plastic materials are presented. These solutions are obtained using the plane-strain slip-line theory developed by Rice (1973). The plastic anisosotropy is described by the Hill quadratic yield condition. The crack-tip stress solutions under symmetric (Mode I) and anti-symmetric (Mode II) conditions agree well with the low-hardening solutions for the corresponding power-law hardening materials. The crack-tip stress solutions under mixed Mode I and II conditions are also presented. All the solutions indicate that the general features of the slip-line field near a crack tip in orthotropic plastic materials with the elliptical yield contours in the Mohr plane are the same as those associated with isotropic plastic materials. However, the angular variations of the crack-tip stress fields for the materials with large plastic orthotropy differ substantially from those for isotropic plastic materials. Modifications due to polygonal yield contours are outlined and implications of solutions to the fracture analysis of ductile composite materials containing macroscopic flaws are discussed.  相似文献

A novel singular finite element is presented to study cracked plates with arbitrary traction acting on crack surfaces. Firstly, the analytical solution around crack tips is determined using the symplectic dual approach. Subsequently, the solution is used to develop a novel singular finite element, which depicts accurately the characteristic of singular stresses field near crack tips. And the novel element can be applied to solve cracked plates, and both Mode I and Mode II stress intensity factors can be determined directly and accurately. Lastly, two numerical examples are given to illustrate the present method.  相似文献

The mechanism of pitting caused by rolling contact is analyzed using the fracture mechanics approach. The governing factors are the initial crack length, crack angle, contact force, friction, strain hardened layer, and the hydraulic pressure of trapped fluid acting on the crack surface. Mode I and II stress intensity and the strain energy density factors are calculated by application of the two-dimensional finite element method. The strain energy density criterion is applied to show that shallow angle crack under small rolling contact force and friction enhances the probability of pitting under the roller’s running surface. The presence of a strain hardened surface layer also tends to affect the fracture behavior. The analytical results agree well with the experimental observations.  相似文献

Experimental results suggest that the interfacial fracture resistance is minimal for approximate near tip Mode I accompanied by positive and negative near tip Mode II. Finite-strain FE analysis is made for an elastic–plastic medium bonded to an ideally elastic medium with an interface crack. Small-scale plasticity conditions are invoked and examined in relation to the elastic–plastic stress distribution along the bond line. Plasticity engenders a tendency to turn near tip biaxiality towards pure Mode I regardless of the mixed-mode loading. High levels of hydrostatic stress are attained. For different mode mixities of the applied load, the dependence of the elastic–plastic normal bond stress on load level is examined. It is found that under positive Mode II loading, the normal bond stress σyy tends to saturate as the load level rises. This does not occur for Mode I and negative Mode II loading. In addition, deformation patterns inside the plastic zone are examined for mixed-mode situations. A displacement criterion based on the normal bond crack opening suggests a dependence of the critical load level on the extent of mixed mode. Under positive mode II fracture, traces of the ductile material are found at the top of the elastic substrate. Some of these conclusions appear to be consistent with the fracture patterns observed for LD-polyethylene/glass interfacial mixed-mode fracture.  相似文献

Under mixed mode loading, the crack tip blunts and undergoes displacements in two directions, the normal and shear component corresponding to Mode I and Mode II loading, respectively. These local displacements are determined by the duplicated film method and used to analyze the behavior of mixed mode fracture in aluminum alloy LY12. The mixed mode resultant crack opening displacement (COD) at fracture initiation tends to increase more rapidly with increase of the Mode II shear component. The fracture initiation value of COD for pure Mode II loading is six (6) times greater than that for Mode 1 loading. The same applies to the maximum effective plastic strain crack growth near the crack front. Observed are two typical morphologies, the equal-axes dimples and the parabolic dimples with evidence of slippage as dominated, respectively, by Mode I and Mode II loading.  相似文献

Turbo-generator shafts are often subjected to complex dynamic torsional loadings, resulting in generation and propagation of circumferential cracks. Mode III fatigue crack growth generally results in a fracture surface consisting of peaks and valleys, resembling a factory roof. The fracture surface roughness depends on the material microstructure, the material yield strength, and the applied cyclic torque amplitude. This crack pattern can severely affect the vibration characteristics of the shafts. The accurate evaluation of the torsional dynamic response of the turbo-generator shafts entails considering the local sources of energy loss in the crack vicinity. The two most common sources of the energy loss are the local energy loss due to the plasticity at the crack tip and frictional energy loss due to interaction of mutual crack surfaces. A theoretical procedure for evaluating the values of the system loss factors corresponding to these sources of energy loss is presented. Furthermore, the local flexibility is obtained by evaluating the resistance of the cracked section of the shaft to the rotational displacement. The shaft material is assumed to be elastic perfectly plastic. The effects of the applied Mode III stress intensity factor and the crack surface pattern parameters on the energy loss due to the friction and the energy loss due to the plasticity at the crack tip are investigated. The results show that depending on the amplitude of the applied Mode III stress intensity factor, one of these energy losses may dominate the total energy loss in the circumferentially cracked shaft. The results further indicate that the torsional dynamic response of the turbo-generator shaft is significantly affected by considering these two sources of the local energy loss.  相似文献

A cracked orthotropic semi-infinite plate under thermal shock is investigated. The thermal stresses are generated due to sudden cooling of the boundary by ramp function temperature change. The superposition technique is used to solve the problem. The crack problem is formulated by applying the thermal stresses obtained from the uncracked plate with opposite sign to be the only external loads on the crack surfaces as the crack surface tractions. The Fourier transform technique is used to solve the problem leading to a singular equation of the Cauchy type. The singular integral equation is solved numerically using the expansion method. The influence of the material orthotropy on the stress intensity factors is shown by comparing the results obtained for different orthotropic materials and isotropic materials in the case of plane stress. The numerical results of the stress intensity factors are demonstrated as a function of time, crack length, location of the crack and the duration of the cooling rate.  相似文献

The scattering of general SH plane wave by an interface crack between two dissimilar viscoelastic bodies is studied and the dynamic stress intensity factor at the crack-tip is computed. The scattering problem can be decomposed into two problems: one is the reflection and refraction problem of general SH plane waves at perfect interface (with no crack); another is the scattering problem due to the existence of crack. For the first problem, the viscoelastic wave equation, displacement and stress continuity conditions across the interface are used to obtain the shear stress distribution at the interface. For the second problem, the integral transformation method is used to reduce the scattering problem into dual integral equations. Then, the dual integral equations are transformed into the Cauchy singular integral equation of first kind by introduction of the crack dislocation density function. Finally, the singular integral equation is solved by Kurtz's piecewise continuous function method. As a consequence, the crack opening displacement and dynamic stress intensity factor are obtained. At the end of the paper, a numerical example is given. The effects of incident angle, incident frequency and viscoelastic material parameters are analyzed. It is found that there is a frequency region for viscoelastic material within which the viscoelastic effects cannot be ignored. In this paper, we consider the elasto-static problem of an embedded crack in a graded orthotropic coating bonded to a homogeneous substrate subject to statically applied normal and tangential surface loading. The crack direction is parallel to the free surface. The coating is graded in the thickness direction and is orthogonal to the crack direction. This coating is modelled as a non-homogeneous medium with an orthotropic stress–strain law. The equivalent crack surface stresses are first obtained and substituted in the plane elasticity equations. Using integral transforms, the governing equations are converted into singular integral equations which are solved numerically to yield the displacement field as well as the crack-tip stress intensity factors. This study presents a complete theoretical formulation for the problem in the static case. A numerical predictive capability for solving the singular integral equations and computing the crack-tip stress intensity factors is proposed. Since the loading is compressive, a previously developed crack-closure algorithm is applied to avoid interpenetration of the crack faces. The main objective of the paper is to investigate the effects of the material orthotropy and non-homogeneity of the graded coating on the crack-tip stress intensity factors, with and without using the crack-closure algorithm, for the purpose of gaining better understanding on the behavior and design of graded coatings.  相似文献
