The turbulence structures near a sheared air-water interface were experimentally investigated with the hydrogen bubble visualization technique. Surface shear was imposed by an airflow over the water flow which was kept free from surface waves. Results show that the wind shear has the main influence on coherent structures under air-water interfaces. Low- and high- speed streaks form in the region close to the interface as a result of the imposed shear stress. When a certain airflow velocity is reached, “turbulent spots” appear randomly at low-speed streaks with some characteristics of hairpin vortices. At even higher shear rates, the flow near the interface is dominated primarily by intermittent bursting events. The coherent structures observed near sheared air-water interfaces show qualitative similarities with those occurring in near-wall turbulence. However, a few distinctive phenomena were also observed, including the fluctuating thickness of the instantaneous boundary layer and vertical vortices in bursting processes, which appear to be associated with the characteristics of air-water interfaces. It is known from smoke visualizations that in a transitional boundary layer subjected to free-stream turbulence, streaks appear and eventually break down to turbulence after wavy motions. In order to observe the streaky structures directly, a stereo particle-tracking velocimetry system using hydrogen bubbles in a water channel has been developed and validated against laser Doppler velocimetry. Mean flow statistics show good agreement with previous results. With the developed measurement system, the instantaneous spanwise distribution of the streamwise and wall-normal velocities can be measured fast enough to resolve the time development of the streaky structures. Measurements of instantaneous spanwise distributions of the streamwise and wall-normal velocity disturbances show strong negative correlation between the wall-normal and streamwise velocities in the streaks. Spatial evolution of a small amplitude localized disturbance introduced into the laminar boundary layer of a flat plate has been studied experimentally using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. PIV data have been acquired in the spanwise and wall normal planes. Long and well defined high and low speed streaks are seen in the spanwise plane. The number of streaks are found to increase in the downstream direction. Breathing mode type oscillation of the boundary layer is observed. Associated with the streaks and akin to the bypass transition, ‘backward’ and ‘forward’ jet like structures of the fluctuating velocity components are observed.AS Banerjee: summer trainee, IIT Kharagpur, India  相似文献

By a suitable manipulation of hydrogen bubble generation, some new results were obtained: (1) The long-streaks are generated along the interfaces between low and high-speed streaks. The long-streaks are generally stretching and are moving faster than its neighboring high-speed streaks. The hydrogen bubbles in long-streaks have longer life. (2) The stream-wise vortices are also generated along the interfaces. The project is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

In this paper, an experimental investigation on the flow structures in a turbulent boundary layer employing a special laser light sheet-Hydrogen bubble flow visualization technique is described. It is observed that the high/low speed streaks are directly related to the hairpin or horseshoe-like vortices. This observation can give a better understanding of the physical mechanism in the turbulent boundary layer. Fluid Mechanic Institute, BUAA  相似文献

The present paper presents an experimental effort on the regeneration process of two low-speed laminar streaks in a zero-pressure-gradient laminar boundary layer. Two vertical thin wires separated by a spanwise distance of 30 mm are used to introduce disturbances of two rolls of transitional Karmain vortex street to the downstream boundary layer. Both hydrogen bubble visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement show that two lowspeed streaks are induced through leading-edge receptivity process. As these streaks develop in the downstream, two additional low-speed streaks begin to appear outboard of the flank of the original two, together with complex dynamics of streak splitting and merging. A flow pattern of four streaks aligned along the spanwise direction occurs finally in the far downstream. It is found that besides the mechanisms of streak breakdown, the streak interaction is also an important factor characterizing the instability of low speed streaks and their regeneration process.  相似文献

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements have been analyzed in order to characterize the dynamics of coherent structures (eddies and streaks) within the suction side boundary layer of a low pressure turbine cascade perturbed by impinging wakes. To this end, the instantaneous flow fields at low Reynolds number and elevated free-stream turbulence intensity level (simulating the real condition of the blade row within the engine) were investigated in two orthogonal planes (a blade-to-blade and a wall-parallel plane). Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) has been employed to filter the instantaneous flow maps allowing a better visualization of the structures involved in the transition process of the boundary layer. For the unsteady case properly selected POD modes have been also used to sort the instantaneous PIV images in the wake passage period. This procedure allows computing phase-averaged data and visualizing structures size and intensity in the different parts of the boundary layer during the different wake passage phases. The contributions to the whole shear stress due to the largest spanwise oriented scales at the leading and trailing boundaries of the wake-jet structures and those associated with streaky structures observed in the bulk of the wake are discussed. Instantaneous images in the wall-parallel plane are filtered with POD and they allow us to further highlight the occurrence of low and high speed traveling streaks (Klebanoff mode). The periodic advection along the suction side of the high turbulent content regions carried by the wakes anticipates both formation and sinuous instability of the streaks inside the boundary layer as compared with the steady case. The dynamics driving the breakdown of the streaks and the consequent formation of nuclei with high wall-normal vorticity have been found to be almost the same in the steady and the unsteady cases. Auto-correlation of the instantaneous images are also presented in order to highlight analogies and differences in the size and spacing of streaks in the two cases. These results are also compared with the available literature concerning simplified geometries (i.e flat plate) operating under steady inflow.  相似文献

The nature of near-wall convection velocity in turbulent channel flow   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A novel notion of turbulent structure the local cascade structure-is introduced to study the convection phenomenon in a turbulent channel flow. A space-time cross-correlation method is used to calculate the convection velocity. It is found that there are two characteristic convection speeds near the wall, one associated with small-scale streaks of a lower speed and another with streamwise vortices and hairpin vortices of a higher speed. The new concept of turbulent structure is powerful to illustrate the dominant role of coherent structures in the near-wall convection, and to reveal also the nature of the convection-the propagation of patterns of velocity fluctuations-which is scale-dependent.  相似文献

The transition of a separated shear layer over a flat plate, in the presence of periodic wakes and elevated free-stream turbulence (FST), is numerically investigated using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The upper wall of the test section is inviscid and specifically contoured to impose a streamwise pressure distribution over the flat plate to simulate the suction surface of a low-pressure turbine (LPT) blade. Two different distributions representative of a ‘high-lift’ and an ‘ultra high-lift’ turbine blade are examined. Results obtained from the current LES compare favourably with the extensive experimental data previously obtained for these configurations. The LES results are then used to further investigate the flow physics involved in the transition process. In line with experimental experience, the benefit of wakes and FST obtained by suppressing the separation bubble, is more pronounced in ‘ultra high-lift’ design when compared to the ‘high-lift’ design. Stronger ‘Klebanoff streaks’ are formed in the presence of wakes when compared to the streaks due to FST alone. These streaks promoted much early transition. The weak Klebanoff streaks due to FST continued to trigger transition in between the wake passing cycles. The experimental inference regarding the origin of Klebanoff streaks at the leading edge has been confirmed by the current simulations. While the wake convects at local free-stream velocity, its impression in the boundary layer in the form of streaks convects much slowly. The ‘part-span’ Kelvin–Helmholtz structures, which were observed in the experiments when the wake passes over the separation bubble, are also captured. The non-phase averaged space-time plots manifest that reattachment is a localized process across the span unlike the impression of global reattachment portrayed by phase averaging.  相似文献

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has been adopted to analyze the instantaneous flow field developing on a high-lift turbine blade profile operating under low and elevated free-stream turbulence conditions (FSTI). Results reported in the paper allow us to analyze the dynamics leading to transition and separation of the suction side boundary layer, looking to generation, propagation and breakdown of coherent structures observed in the two different FSTI cases. To this end, measurements have been performed in two orthogonal planes. Results obtained in the blade-to-blade plane allow the detailed characterization of the propagation of Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) rolls generating, at low FSTI condition, as a consequence of a non-reattaching separation. Otherwise, data in the wall-parallel plane allow recognizing the presence of three-dimensional disuniformities induced at high FSTI by low and high speed streaks (Klebanoff mode). The sinuous breakdown of boundary layer streaks generates other complex three-dimensional coherent structures such as hairpin or cane-like vortices that induce transition. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) has been adopted to in depth characterize these structures, thus further explaining the mechanisms through which the free-stream turbulence intensity modify the transition/separation processes of the suction side boundary layer of an highly loaded low pressure turbine blade.  相似文献

Previous studies on boundary layer transition at moderate levels of free stream turbulence (FST) have shown that the transition process can be promoted by the introduction of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves. In the present work the interaction between localized boundary layer disturbances and controlled TS-waves is studied experimentally. The localized disturbances are generated either from a controlled free stream perturbation, or by means of suction or injection through a slot in the flat plate surface. Both methods result in boundary layer disturbances dominated by elongated streamwise streaks of high and low velocity in the streamwise component. A strong interaction is observed preferably for high frequency TS-waves, which are damped when generated separately, and the interaction starts as a local amplification of a wide band of low-frequency oblique waves. The later stages of the transition process can be identified as a non-linear interaction between the oblique structures, leading to regeneration of new and stronger streamwise streaks.  相似文献

Tomographic-PIV was used to measure the boundary layer transition forced by a zigzag trip. The resulting instantaneous three-dimensional velocity distributions are used to quantitatively visualize the flow structures. They reveal undulating spanwise vortices directly behind the trip, which break up into individual arches and then develop into the hairpin-like structures typical of wall-bounded turbulence. Compared to the instantaneous flow structure, the structure of the average velocity field is very different showing streamwise vortices. Such streamwise vortices are often associated with the low-speed streaks occurring in bypass transition flows, but in this case clearly are an artifact of the averaging. Rather, the present streaks in the separated flow region directly behind the trip are resulting from the waviness in the spanwise vortices as introduced by the zigzag trip. Furthermore, these streaks and the separated flow region are observed to be related to a large-scale, spanwise uniform unsteadiness in the flow that contributes significantly to the velocity fluctuations over large downstream distances (up to at least the edge of the present measurement domain).  相似文献

The effects of streaks on boundary layer transition depend on the initial amplitude of T-S waves introducedto excite the transition. This problem was studied in a flat-plate boundary layer in water tunnel byusing hydrogen bubble method. Three T-S wave initial amplitudes were tested. The results show thatboth narrow and wide-spacing streaks depress the transition excited by T-S waves with lower initialamplitude. However, when transition is excited by T-S waves of higher initial amplitude, thenarrow-spacing streaks depress the transition, while the wide-spacing streaks promote thetransition. Further the underlying mechanisms were also analyzed.  相似文献

In an effort to isolate the mechanism by which streamwise structures form in turbulent wall layers, evolution equations were derived for the streamwise velocity and vorticity perturbations about a mean turbulent fully developed channel flow. The stability of these equations, which take their most concise form when derived from the Generalized Lagrangian mean equations of Andrews and McIntyre, are studied assuming normal modes and infinitesimal disturbances. The resulting stability diagram yields, inter alia, the spanwise periodicity of the resulting structures, which we term shear layer vortices. If streaks are thought of as the footprints of these vortices, we then have a formal way of determining the spacing of streaks. The first three modes of instability are determined; at the first not just two vortices form per period, but four. It is also evident that an intense local shear layer forms about the plane in which the convection velocity equals the mean Eulerian velocity.Dedicated to Professor J.L. The evolution of low-speed streaks in the turbulent boundary layer of the minimum channel flow unit at a low Reynolds number is simulated by the direct numer- ical simulation (DNS) based on the standard Fourier-Chebyshev spectral method. The subharmonic sinuous (SS) mode for two spanwise-aligned low-speed streaks is excited by imposing the initial perturbations. The possibilities and the physical realities of the turbulent sustaining in the minimal channel unit are examined. Based on such a flow field environment, the evolution of the low-speed streaks during a cycle of turbulent sus- taining, including lift-up, oscillation, and breakdown, is investigated. The development of streamwise vortices and the dynamics of vortex structures are examined. The results show that the vortices generated from the same streak are staggered along the streamwise direction, while the vortices induced by different streaks tilt toward the normal direction due to the mutual induction effect. It is the spatial variations of the streamwise vortices that cause the lift-up of the streaks. By resolving the transport dynamics of enstrophy, the strength of the vortices is found to continuously grow in the logarithmic layer through the vortex stretching mechanism during the evolution of streaks. The enhancement of the vortices contributes to the spanwise oscillation and the following breakdown of the low-speed streaks.  相似文献

The optimal transient growth process of perturbations driven by the pressure gradient is studied in a turbulent pipe flow. A new computational method is proposed, based on the projection operators which project the governing equations onto the subspace spanned by the radial vorticity and radial velocity. The method is validated by comparing with the previous studies. Two peaks of the maximum transient growth amplification curve are found at different Reynolds numbers ranging from 20 000 to 250 000. The optimal flow structures are obtained and compared with the experiments and DNS results. The location of the outer peak is at the azimuthal wave number n=1, while the location of the inner peak is varying with the Reynolds number. It is observed that the velocity streaks in the buffer layer with a spacing of 100δv are the most amplified flow structures. Finally, we consider the optimal transient growth time and its dependence on the azimuthal wave length. It shows a self-similar behavior for perturbations of different scales in the optimal transient growth process.  相似文献

This paper investigates the vortex dynamics in the suction-side boundary layer on an aero-engine low pressure turbine blade at two different Reynolds numbers at which short and long laminar separation bubbles occur. Different vortical patterns are observed and investigated through large eddy simulation (LES). The results show that at the higher Reynolds number, streamwise streaks exist upstream of separation line. These streaks initiate spanwise undulation in the form of vortex tubes, which roll-up and shed from the shear layer due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. The vortex tubes alternately pair together and eventually distort and break down to small-scale turbulence structures near the mean reattachment location and convect into a fully turbulent boundary layer. At the lower Reynolds number, streamwise streaks are strong and the separated flow is unable to reattach to the blade surface immediately after transition to turbulence. Therefore, bursting of short bubbles into long bubbles can occur, and vortex tubes have larger diameters and cover a part of the blade span. In this case vortex pairing does not occur and vortex shedding process is promoted mainly by flapping phenomenon. Moreover, the results of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) analysis show a breathing motion as a source of unsteadiness in the separation location, which is accompanied by the flapping phenomenon.  相似文献

A numerical investigation is carried out to study the transition of a subsonic boundary layer on a flat plate with roughness elements distributed over the entire surface. Post-transition, the effect of surface roughness on a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is explored. In the transitional regime, the onset of flow transition predicted by the current simulations is in agreement with the experimentally based correlations proposed in the literature. Transition mechanisms are shown to change significantly with the increasing roughness height. Roughness elements that are inside the boundary layer create an elevated shear layer and alternating high and low speed streaks near the wall. Secondary sinuous instabilities on the streaks destabilize the shear layer promoting transition to turbulence. For the roughness topology considered, it is observed that the instability wavelengths are governed by the streamwise and spanwise spacing between the roughness elements. In contrast, the roughness elements that are higher than the boundary layer create turbulent wakes in their lee. The scale of instability is much shorter and transition occurs due to the shedding from the obstacles. Post-transition, in the spatially developing TBL, the velocity defect profiles for both the smooth and rough walls collapsed when non dimensionalized in the outer units. However, when compared to the smooth wall, deviation in the Reynolds stresses are observable in the outer layer; the deviation being higher for the larger roughness elements.  相似文献
