Sensitivity changes during measurement sequences of infra-red-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) and post-IR optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) are presented for a sample of loess from northwestern China. Together with a dose recovery experiment, the results are used to investigate the ratio of 2.4 found for the De values (for IRSL and [post-IR] OSL) obtained when using a single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol in which both De values are obtained in a single sequence of measurements. Responses to test doses for both the IRSL and [post-IR] OSL show progressive luminescence sensitivity changes with repeated measurement cycles, with a slight dose dependence for the IRSL. In addition, five modified SAR procedures were used, varying preheats, filter combinations and method of measuring the luminescence signal. The De values for all IRSL measurements were at least 50% greater than those for the [post-IR] OSL signal. A modified SAR sequence was also applied in which 0.1 s stimulations (using both IR and blue light sources) were made between all sample treatments. A lack of consistency in the measured luminescence sensitivity of the natural IRSL signal suggests that the [post-IR] OSL signal provides the more reliable value of De.  相似文献

Concern over anomalous fading has been the biggest single factor responsible for deterring the widespread use of the infra-red stimulated luminescence (IRSL) or thermoluminescence (TL) signal from feldspars for luminescence dating. There has therefore been great interest in the use of the recently proposed Post-IR IRSL signal, because it has been shown to significantly reduce the degree of anomalous fading observed in feldspars and therefore potentially provides a means of circumventing the issue. This study undertakes a systematic investigation into various preheat and Post-IR IRSL measurement conditions proposed in the literature, by using two samples from the Halfway House loess section in Alaska which bracket the Old Crow tephra which has been dated using fission track methods. Preheat plateau tests show a dramatic change in equivalent dose with Post-IR IRSL measurement conditions, and further tests reveal that these changes are driven by preheat temperature rather than Post-IR IR stimulation temperature. Dose recovery tests on laboratory-bleached material mimic the findings of the natural preheat plateau test data, and sensitivity change between the first and second Single Aliquot Regenerative dose (SAR) measurement cycle is found to be responsible. Comparison of the Post-IR IRSL ages with the independent age control shows that, for the samples in this study, the Post-IR IR signal stimulated at 290 °C is inappropriate for dating. However, use of lower preheat (250–300 °C) and Post-IR IR stimulation temperatures from 225 to 270 °C gave rise to ages which were in agreement with the independent age control.  相似文献

Recent post-IR IRSL (pIRIR) dating studies using polymineral fine grains assumed that the a-values obtained for the IRSL signal at 50 °C and the pIRIR signal at higher temperatures (e.g. 225 °C) are identical. However, the a-value of a sample depends on the stimulation method, and the assumption mentioned above remains to be tested. Using five polymineral fine grain samples, this study investigates whether a common a-value can be used for both the IR and the pIRIR signals. Applying the pIRIR protocol, the a-values were measured with three different methods of signal resetting (optical bleaching, end of SAR cycle, heating). In addition, uncorrected α- and β-irradiation induced growth curves were determined for three samples and fitted with single saturating exponential functions. For the investigated samples we found significant mean differences, 0.023 ± 0.012 and higher, in the a-values determined for the IR50 and pIRIR225 signals. Synthetic a-values deduced from uncorrected multiple-aliquot dose response curves seem to confirm this observation. Although, in summary, our results indicate that the practice of using a common a-value should be carefully re-considered, the physical reasons remain to be determined.  相似文献

Post-IR IRSL (pIRIR) signals from K-feldspar grains measured at elevated temperatures are increasingly being used for dating sediments. Unfortunately the pIRIR signal from K-feldspars bleaches more slowly than other signals (e.g. OSL from quartz) upon exposure to daylight, leading to concerns about residual signals remaining at deposition. However, earlier studies have not assessed whether the pIRIR signal bleaches at the same rate in all feldspar grains. In this study laboratory bleaching experiments have been conducted and for the first time the results show that the rate at which the pIRIR signal from individual K-feldspar grains bleach varies. To determine whether grain-to-grain variability in bleaching rate has a dominant control on equivalent dose (De) distributions determined using single grains, analysis was undertaken on three samples with independent age control from different depositional environments (two aeolian and one glaciofluvial). The De value determined from each grain was compared with the rate at which the pIRIR225 signal from the grain bleaches. The bleaching rate of each grain was assessed by giving a 52 Gy dose and measuring the residual De after bleaching for an hour in a solar simulator. There is no clear relationship between the rate at which the pIRIR225 signal of an individual grain bleaches and the magnitude of its De. It is concluded that variability in the bleaching rate of the pIRIR225 signal from one grain to another does not appear to be a dominant control on single grain De distributions.  相似文献

The post-IR IRSL protocol with single K-feldspar grains was applied to three samples taken from a fluvial sedimentary sequence at the archaeological site of the Dali Man, Shaanxi Province, China. K-feldspar coarse grains were extracted for measurement. Approximately 30–40% of the grains were sufficiently bright to measure, and after application of rejection criteria based on signal strength, recuperation, recycling ratio and saturation dose, ~10–15% of the grains were used for De calculation. The relationship of signal decay rate and form of De(t) with the recovery dose were investigated. The dose recovery ratios of the samples after initial bleaching with the four different light sources were within uncertainties of unity. No anomalous fading was observed. The over-dispersion of the recovered dose and De values were similar, suggesting neither incomplete resetting of the post-IR IRSL signals nor spatially heterogeneous dose rates significantly affected the natural dose estimates. The values of De obtained with the single K-feldspar grain post-IR IRSL protocol were in the range ~400–490 Gy. Combining all of the measured single-grain signals for each of the individual samples (into a ‘synthetic single aliquot’) increased the De estimates to the range ~700–900 Gy, suggesting that the grains screened-out by the rejection criteria may have the potential to cause palaeodose over-estimation, although this finding requires a more extensive investigation. Thermally transferred signals were found in the single K-feldspar grains post-IR IRSL protocol, and the proportion of thermally transferred signal to test-dose OSL signal (stimulation at 290 °C) from the natural dose was higher than from regenerative doses, and the proportion was grain- and dose-dependent. As such, TT-post-IR IRSL signals at 290 °C have the potential to cause dose underestimation, although this may be reduced by using larger test-dose irradiations. Our study demonstrates considerable potential in the post-IR IRSL method in providing chronological control in studies relevant to human evolution in the later-Pleistocene.  相似文献

The IRSL and post-IR IRSL (pIRIR) signal characteristics of polymineral fine grains are investigated and compared with those of K- and Na-rich feldspar extracts. TL signal loss after IR and pIRIR stimulations occurs mainly at around 320 °C for polymineral and Na-feldspar samples and around 410 °C for K-feldspar samples, when a preheat temperature of 250 °C for 60 s is used. After preheating to a higher temperature (320 °C for 60 s) all samples show a TL reduction around 410 °C in the blue detection window. Pulse annealing experiments for IRSL and pIRIR signals for preheats between 320 °C and 500 °C indicate that the signal stabilities are similar among the different feldspar types, when a higher preheat temperature (>320 °C) is used. Thermal activation energies for IRSL and pIRIR signals are largest in K-feldspar and smallest in polymineral fine grains, in both blue and UV detection windows for both fast time-resolved (TR) and continuous wave (CW) signals. These results suggest that IRSL and pIRIR signals in polymineral fine grains originate mainly from Na-feldspar grains; these signals are less thermally stable than those from K-feldspar, but a more stable signal (presumably from K-feldspar grains) can be obtained using a higher preheat temperature.  相似文献

In this study, we applied optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to two fine grain sediment samples collected at Jeongokri, Korea. A single aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) procedure was applied to both polymineral grains and to chemically isolated (H2SiF6) quartz grains of 4–11 μm diameter. For polymineral fine grains, the OSL IR depletion ratio and the equivalent dose (De) plateau test appear to be equally sensitive indicators of appropriate IR stimulation time for use in the ‘double SAR’ protocol. Additionally, the OSL IR depletion ratio test gives an indication of the relative mineral composition of the samples, hence providing an assessment of the likelihood of obtaining a quartz-dominated [post-IR] OSL signal. Use of higher preheat temperatures would assist in thermally eroding the non-quartz component of the [post-IR] OSL signal from polyminerals. For the quartz fine grains, data from both natural De determinations and laboratory dose recovery tests are required to identify the appropriate preheat temperatures for dating, due to problems of thermal transfer. This phenomenon is particularly exaggerated for these samples due to the large De values (≥350 Gy) and hence low slope of the dose–response curve. The double SAR method cannot be applied ubiquitously, even after careful and rigorous study of one sample from a section. Quartz OSL dating using a range of preheat temperatures is suggested to be the most suitable method for OSL dating of fine grain sediments.  相似文献

The single aliquot technique has been applied to single grains of K-feldspar extracted from a well-dated late-glacial marine sediment sample for which standard luminescence dating yielded ages that were in excess of the expected age. Natural infrared-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) intensities as well as single grain palaeodoses show a wide range of values. Most of the bright grains yield equivalent doses largely in excess of the expected palaeodose, considering the depositional age of the sample. The luminescence emitted by the brightest grains would dominate the signal emitted from aliquots containing many grains. This explains the overestimation of ages obtained using standard luminescence techniques for the sample investigated. Palaeodoses obtained from grains that exhibit low IRSL intensities are close to the expected dose. However, the age derived from these grains is lower than the expected age. Anomalous fading is believed to be the main cause for the age underestimation. This study is the first demonstration of the feasibility of dating a sedimentary event using the luminescence of a single mineral grain.  相似文献

A strong optogalvanic effect has been observed in a negative glow of a miniature neon discharge lamp using tunable pulse dye laser pumped by a copper vapor laser. A comparative study on temporal evolution of optogalvanic signal in a positive and negative dynamic resistance region of the discharge is described. Dye laser beam was tuned to various neon transitions 1si → 2pj (Paschen notations) within 570-617 nm wavelength range. Anomalous behavior of optogalvanic signal was observed at 588.2 nm for (1s5 → 2p2) neon transition at low discharge current (<220 μA). This anomalous behavior is the attributes of damped oscillations of optogalvanic signal that correlate with negative dynamic resistance (dV/di < 0) of the discharge. Penning ionization at low discharge current and small energy mismatch is assumed to be the main cause of the negative dynamic resistance. Penning ionization process has been explained by resonantly ionizing energy transfer via collisions between neon buffer gas atoms in the lowest metastable state (1s5) and electrode sputtered atoms in ground state using their partial energy level diagram.  相似文献

Luminescence dating of individual sand-sized grains of quartz is a well-established technique in Quaternary geochronology, but the most ubiquitous mineral on the surface of the Earth—feldspar—has received much less attention at the single-grain level. In this study, we estimated single-grain equivalent dose values and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) ages for K-rich feldspar (KF) grains from a fluvial sample underlying Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) deposits in north-central India, and compared these ages (corrected for anomalous fading) with those obtained from individual grains of quartz from the same sample. Both minerals have broadly similar single-grain age distributions, but both are greatly overdispersed and most grains have ages substantially younger than the expected age of the YTT deposit (~74 ka). Almost half (45%) of KF grains used for age calculation have fading rates statistically consistent with zero, but the age distribution of these grains is as dispersed as that of the entire population. We obtained a similar distribution of ages calculated for 51 grains using their individually measured internal K contents, which exhibited only minor grain-to-grain variation. Given the lack of dependency of single-grain ages on the measured fading rates and internal K contents, and the overall adequacy of bleaching of grains collected from a sandbar in the modern river channel, we consider the spread in ages is most likely due to mixing, at the time of deposition and after the YTT event, of potentially well-bleached fluvially-transported sediments with older grains derived from slumping of riverbank deposits. Some spread may also be due to natural variations in the IRSL properties of individual KF grains.  相似文献

Effects of thermally transferred signals in the post-IR IRSL SAR protocol   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The recently developed post-IR IRSL SAR protocol is promising to isolate more stable IRSL signals of feldspars. However, the high temperature thermal treatments used will inevitably induce thermally transferred post-IR IRSL295 (TT-post-IR IRSL295) signal, which would contribute to the measured post-IR IRSL295 signal of the test dose and may lead to inaccurate sensitivity correction. In this study, the effects of TT-post-IR IRSL295 signal in the post-IR IRSL295 SAR protocol are investigated using medium polyminerals from a loess section at Caoxian, northwestern Loess Plateau in China. The sensitivity changes of the IRSL50 and the post-IR IRSL295 signals are different from natural cycle to regenerative cycles, which can be attributed to the interference of the TT-post-IR IRSL295 signal. Such difference is dependent on the test dose and the post-IR IR stimulation time. The TT-post-IR IRSL295 signal is also shown to affect the post-IR IRSL295 Do and De values and to cause overestimation of the fading rates. Our study therefore highlights the need of serious consideration on the effects of TT-post-IR IRSL signal when the post-IR IRSL SAR protocol is employed for dating.  相似文献

Thermal lens signals in solutions of rhodamine B laser dye in methanol are measured using the dual beam pump-probe technique. The nature of variations of signal strength with concentration is found to be different for 514 and 488 nm Ar+ laser excitations. However, both the pump wavelengths produce an oscillatory type variation of thermal lens signal amplitude with the concentration of the dye solution. Probable reasons for this peculiar behaviour (which is absent in the case of fluorescent intensity) are mentioned.  相似文献

A new phenomenon of anomalous transparency of a metallic plate upon the passage of a strong transport current is predicted. It is shown that the electromagnetic field of an incident wave may be carried from the skin layer to the opposite face by electrons trapped by the alternating intrinsic magnetic field of the transport current even under the conditions of the extremely anomalous skin effect for which the skin depth is the smallest parameter having the dimensions of length. The mechanism of the rf field transport effectively operates at low temperature, when the mean free path of charge carriers is large. The wave field distribution in the plate is analyzed. The cyclotron resonance at trapped electrons, which emerges due to their periodic return to the skin layer, is predicted and qualitatively analyzed.  相似文献

Using a museum specimen of perthitic feldspar, the characteristics of post-IR IRSL production at 200 °C after different prior IR bleaching at 100 °C were investigated. It was found that the post-IR IRSL signal had an isothermal TL contribution that was unexpected following a previous preheat at 320 °C; this is the result of isothermal decay of recuperated TL peaks resulting from photo-transfer that occurred when the previous IRSL signal was measured at a lower temperature. The isothermal TL contribution to the post-IR IRSL signal depends on prior IR bleaching conditions. Since the recuperated TL signal comes from photo-transfer during IRSL production, this signal should also suffer from anomalous fading. Thus, it is suggested that this isothermal TL contribution to the measured post-IR IRSL is removed by the inclusion of an additional step, a cut-heat to 300 °C, in the post-IR IRSL dating protocol.  相似文献

Interferometric optical fiber sensor relies on the coherent mixing of two optical signals, which is strongly polarization dependent. The fluctuation in the input polarization to an interferometric optical fiber sensor can result in not only the variation of the visibility but also the generation of excess phase noise in the output. In this paper, the relationship between the visibility and polarization-induced phase noise coefficient is described and theoretically confirmed. The use of tri-state polarization diversity receivers to eliminate polarization-induced signal fading and reduce phase noise is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The result shows that tri-state PDR that improves the visibility can reduce the polarization-induced phase noise and the signal can be correctly demodulated.  相似文献

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurements of quartz are widely used to measure equivalent dose (De). At radiation doses above ~100 Gy, saturation of traps results in a decrease in the rate of growth of the OSL signal, and this makes calculation of De increasingly difficult. A series of dose recovery experiments was undertaken using single grains of quartz from Kalambo Falls, Zambia to explore saturation of single grains. When the OSL signal from many grains is averaged, the characteristic dose (D0) is 47 Gy, typical of published values for quartz. However, D0 for individual grains varies from ~10 to 100 Gy. Doses up to two times the average D0 could be accurately recovered, but above this dose the De became increasingly underestimated. Overdispersion for this type of experiment should be zero, but was observed in all data sets; furthermore the value of overdispersion increased with De. An additional acceptance criterion, the Fast Ratio, is suggested for single grain OSL analysis. This criterion assesses the relative contribution of the fast component of the OSL signal. Including this as an additional acceptance criterion leads to an improved precision, with overdispersion reduced to zero, and improved accuracy in dose recovery at high doses.  相似文献

Signal space diversity is a powerful technique that increases reliability of detection over fading channels. In this paper, we explore the ability of this technique to provide secure communication. We enhance the security of OFDM systems in frequency selective fading channels by providing more diversity gain to the legitimate user compared to an eavesdropper. This is done by adapting the interleaving pattern to the channel of the legitimate user in rich multipath environments, where spatially separated channels are typically independent to each other. This ensures secrecy in a time division duplex system, where the eavesdropper has no information regarding the channel of the legitimate user. The scheme can also be used in the conventional frequency division duplex system, which is more challenging in terms of security aspects because of the channel state information leakage. A theoretical analysis is presented on the bit-error probability in Rayleigh fading environment. The numerical results support the conclusion that adapting the interleaving pattern to the CSI of the legitimate user provides a gain in the bit-error rate performance over the eavesdropper.  相似文献

The sensitivity-corrected multiple-aliquot regenerative-dose (MAR) protocol provides a reliable approach for fine-grained quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. For reliable estimation of the equivalent dose (De), we investigated certain basic experimental parameters in the fine-grained quartz MAR OSL dating of Chinese loess. (1) For suitable bleaching of the natural OSL signal of the regenerative-dose aliquots, the effect of bleaching duration using sunlight, SOL2 and blue LEDs on De was studied, and it is found that the appropriate method is a short-duration SOL2 (e.g. 5 min) or blue LEDs (e.g. 60 s) bleaching. (2) To select the appropriate test dose, the relationship between the test dose and De was investigated based on three samples having De values of approximately 11, 31 and 137 Gy respectively. It is suggested that the test dose for sensitivity correction may be limited to less than approximately 10–20 Gy. (3) Three commonly used fitting modes for quartz OSL growth curve were compared at three regenerative-dose scales. The results indicate that the mode of two saturating exponential functions plus a constant is appropriate and universal. (4) The comparison of De values derived using OSL approach with those obtained using the recuperated OSL (ReOSL) protocol shows that the reliable De estimation in the fine-grained quartz MAR OSL dating of Chinese loess may be limited to less than approximately 300 Gy. (5) The comparison of growth curves for 18 samples from the Weinan, Xifeng and Jingyuan sites shows that it is feasible to construct a standardized growth curve (SGC) for fine-grained quartz OSL signal in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP).  相似文献

A Mössbauer study of magnetically enriched samples of loess and associated, palaeosol from a section in Jixian (China) reveals that the iron-bearing magnetic components are predominantly hematite and magnetite, exhibiting to a large extent similar features in loess and soil. The only important difference observed is the presence of a substantial amount of maghemite in the soil, indicating an advanced stage of weathering of magnetite in the latter. It is therefore concluded that the enhanced remanence observed in the soil can mainly be explained by a dilution of the primary non-magnetic loess minerals and the acquisition of chemical remanence.  相似文献
