A new procedure for chemical modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was established by a glycosidation reaction of hydroxyl groups in PVA with triacetylated sugar oxazoline 1 . 1H and 13C NMR analyses indicated that triacetylated N‐acetyl‐D‐glucosamine (GlcNAc) was introduced onto a PVA backbone selectively via a βO‐glycoside linkage. Deacetylation of triacetylated GlcNAc‐substituted PVA 2 resulted in GlcNAc‐substituted PVA 3 in good yield. These modified PVAs 2 and 3 exhibited solubilities and thermal properties different from the original PVA.  相似文献

The recording of polarization gratings in films of a cholesteric liquid crystalline polymer with different helix pitch was studied in detail. For this purpose, the cholesteric mixture of the nematic azobenzene‐containing copolymer with a chiral‐photochromic dopant was prepared. The utilization of such mixture has made possible to realize dual optical photorecording in one system, first due to the phototuning of the helix pitch by UV light and second the polarization grating recording process by exposure with polarized visible light. The diffraction efficiency strongly depends on the cholesteric helix pitch and films thickness: the increase of the confinement ratio d/p (where d, film thickness; p, helix pitch) results in growth of the diffraction efficiency. Comparison of the induction of polarization gratings in cholesteric, nematic (copolymer without chiral dopant), and amorphous (nonannealed) cholesteric films revealed that only the cholesteric films were characterized by significant oscillations in the diffraction efficiency signal as well as by the presence of the maximum in the first‐order diffraction efficiency in the initial stage of the grating recording process. It was found that in addition to the polarization grating surface relief gratings (SRGs) were also formed in the studied systems, however, the amplitude of the SRG inscribed in the cholesteric films was lower (~20 nm) compared to the grating amplitude obtained in nematic films (~60 nm). Moreover, increasing helix pitch resulted in a decrease of the SRG amplitude. The obtained experimental data demonstrate the great potential of cholesteric LC mixtures of such type for different applications as photoactive materials for photonics. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol)/melamine phosphate composites (PVA/MP) as a novel halogen‐free, flame‐retardant foam matrix were prepared through thermal processing, and then their thermal stability and flame retardancy were investigated by thermo‐gravimetric analysis, micro‐scale combustion calorimeter, cone calorimeter, vertical burning test, and limiting oxygen index (LOI) test. It was found that the thermal stability and combustion properties of the PVA/MP composites could be influenced by the addition of MP. Compared with the control PVA sample (B‐PVA), in the PVA/MP (75/25) composites, the temperature at 5% mass loss (T5%) decreased about 10°C, the residual chars at 600°C increased by nearly 27%, the temperature at the maximum peak heat release rate (TP) shifted from 292°C to 452°C, and the total heat released and the heat release capacity (HRC) decreased by 28% and 14%, respectively. Moreover, the PVA/MP composites could reach LOI value up to 35% and UL94 classification V‐0, showing good flame retardancy. At the same time, both Fourier transform infrared and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of the residual chars from the PVA/MP composites demonstrated that the catalytic effect of MP on the dehydration and decarboxylation reactions of PVA, and the chemical reactivity of MP during the chars‐forming reactions could be used to account for the changed thermal stability and flame retardancy of the PVA/MP composites. The formation of polyiodine complexes was investigated in a photocurable poly(vinyl alcohol) modified N‐methyl‐4(4′‐formylstyryl)pyridinium methosulfate acetal (PVA‐SbQ), which is a photofunctional group that causes photodimerization. PVA‐SbQ films with polyiodine complexes were prepared to be photocured, iodinated and soaked in a boric acid solution. The formation of PVA–polyiodine complexes was studied during iodinating and while in the boric acid treatment through UV–vis absorption spectrometry, resonance Raman spectrometry and IR absorption spectrometry. As a result, polyiodines were formed in the photocurable PVA‐SbQ films, and the formation of PVA–polyiodine complexes was enhanced by boric acid treatment. It was found that the SbQ‐ratio of PVA‐SbQ affects the formation of PVA–polyiodine complexes. The photocrosslinking by the dimerization of SbQ groups helps to form the PVA–I5 complex during the boric acid treatment. Based on this effect, we demonstrated a unique recording method by the PVA–polyiodine complex formation. The PVA‐SbQ film cured by the irradiation of the liner polarized light showed that dichroism of the PVA–polyiodine complexes formed after iodination. A novel type of sol‐gel inorganic‐organic hybrid material coated on glassy carbon electrode used for immobilization of double‐stranded DNA (dsDNA) and study of dsDNA with redox‐active molecules was developed. The hybrid material coating was produced by sol‐gel method with nano hydroxyapatite (HAp)‐polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The optimum composition of the hybrid material was first examined, and the morphology of the nano HAp‐PVA coatings was investigated with the help of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). DsDNA was immobilized in/on the nano HAp‐PVA hybrid coatings by adsorption and the characteristics of the dsDNA/HAp‐PVA/GCE were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using the probes of Co(phen) and Fe(CN) . The results indicate that the dsDNA can be immobilized on the nano porous HAp‐PVA coating effectively and its stability can satisfy the necessity of study on the interactions of dsDNA with redox‐active molecules on the electrode surface. Co(bpy) and Co(phen) were used as the model molecule to study the interactions of dsDNA with redox‐active molecules. Information such as ratio (KOx/KRed) of the binding constant for the oxidized and reduced forms of a bound species, interaction mode, including change in the mode of interaction, and “limiting” ratio K /K at zero ionic strength (μ) can be obtained using dsDNA/HAp‐PVA/GCE with about 2 μg of DNA samples.  相似文献

A new azide‐functionalized xanthate, S‐(4‐azidomethylbenzyl) O‐(2‐methoxyethyl) xanthate, was synthesized and used to mediate the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of vinyl acetate. The polymerization was demonstrated to be controlled, and well‐defined PVAc with α‐azide, ω‐xanthate groups were obtained, the xanthate groups of which were further removed by radical‐induced reduction with lauroyl peroxide in the presence of excess 2‐propanol. Hydrolysis of α‐azide‐terminated PVAc (N3‐PVAc) led to the formation of the corresponding α‐azide‐terminated PVA (N3‐PVA). Finally, end‐modification of N3‐PVA by click chemistry with alkyne‐end‐capped poly(caprolactone) (A‐PCL), alkynyl‐mannose, and alkynyl‐pyrene was carried out to obtain a new block copolymer PCL‐b‐PVA, and two PVA with mannose or pyrene as the end functional groups. The polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and FTIR. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 4494–4504, 2009  相似文献

In this investigation, characterization of the micro structure of three different PVA samples in terms of their degrees of blockiness were performed via 125 MHz 13C‐NMR and 500 MHz ¹H‐NMR measurements. Differences between these PVAs were also discernable by using a high‐performance liquid chromatographic technique employing a reverse‐phase separation mechanism. The results obtained from these studies reveal small but significant differences between the PVAs, which allow a better understanding of the role of these PVAs in the grafting reactions occurring during the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) using PVA as emulsifier.  相似文献

Summary: Poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used in two methods to prepare polymer nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles. The first method involved electrospinning the PVP nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles directly from the PVP solutions containing the Ag nanoparticles. N,N‐Dimethylformamide was used as a solvent for the PVP as well as a reducing agent for the Ag+ ions in the PVP solutions. In the second method, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solutions were electrospun with 5 wt.‐% of the PVP containing Ag nanoparticles. The Ag nanoparticles were evenly distributed in the PVA nanofibers. PVP containing Ag nanoparticles could be used to introduce Ag nanoparticles to other polymer nanofibers that are miscible with PVP.

A methodology for the synthesis of well‐defined poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(vinyl alcohol) (PEO‐b‐PVA) and PVA‐b‐PEO‐b‐PVA polymers was reported. Novel xanthate end‐functionalized PEOs were synthesized by a series of end‐group transformations. They were then used to mediate the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of vinyl acetate to obtain well‐defined poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(vinyl acetate) (PEO‐b‐PVAc) and PVAc‐b‐PEO‐b‐PVAc. When these block copolymers were directly hydrolyzed in methanol solution of sodium hydroxide, polymers with brown color were obtained, which was due to the formation of conjugated unsaturated aldehyde structures. To circumvent these side reactions, the xanthate groups were removed by adding a primary amine before hydrolysis and the products thus obtained were white powders. The polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR spectroscopy and FT‐IR. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 1901–1910, 2009  相似文献

To effectively orient the molecular chains of novel syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrillar fiber (PVA fibril), a high‐temperature zone‐drawing method was adopted. The PVA fibrils were directly prepared from the saponification and in situ fibrillation without a spinning procedure. The maximum draw ratio of the PVA fibril increased with a decrease in the syndiotactic diad (r‐diad) content, indicating that the deformability of PVA molecules was lowered in higher syndiotactic PVA. Degree of crystal orientations up to 0.990 were achieved by stretching the PVA fibril with the r‐diad content of 65.1% and the original degree of crystal orientation of 0.902 at 250 °C close to its crystal melting temperature (Tm). When the same draw ratio was applied to the fibrils, a higher crystal orientation was achieved for the fibrils having higher syndiotacticity. Wide‐angle X‐ray data show that the longitudinal crystal sizes of drawn PVA fibrils were larger in higher syndiotacticities. The degree of crystal orientation, crystallinity, Tm, longitudinal crystal size, and tensile strength of the maximum drawn PVA fibril with a r‐diad content of 65.1% were 0.99, 0.97, 279 °C, 187 Å, and 4.66 N/tex, respectively. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) physical hydrogels were prepared by repeated freeze–thawing cycles using aqueous solutions of two PVA samples having different degrees of syndiotacticity, a‐PVA and s‐PVA with 55% and 61% of syndiotactic diads, respectively. The hydrogels were prepared in the presence of different amounts of lactosilated chitosan derivatives (LC) of different molecular weight. The PVA stereoregularity was found to have a dramatic effect on the amount of PVA incorporated into the hydrogels, leading to remarkable differences in the swelling degree and porosity of a‐PVA and s‐PVA hydrogels. A significant amount of LC was retained in the hydrogels after equilibrium swelling. The swelling of the a‐PVA hydrogels was found to increase significantly by increasing the amount of LC while it was only slightly increased in the case of s‐PVA hydrogels. The amount of LC released after equilibrium swelling was lower when chitosan derivatives with higher molecular weights were used. Increased initial concentrations of LC resulted in much higher porosity of the hydrogels. TGA and DSC studies showed that LC is stabilized by the incorporation in the PVA hydrogels. The melting temperature of the crystalline regions of PVA was not significantly influenced by LC. Conversely, the extension of the crystalline domains increased in the presence of LC. The retention of a chitosan derivative bearing β‐D ‐galactose side chain residues makes these hydrogels potentially useful as scaffolds for hepatocytes culture.

The viscoelastic behavior and molecular motion of highly syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (S‐PVA) fibers with a dyad syndiotacticity (r) of 69% were studied by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and compared with those of atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (A‐PVA) fibers with r = 54%. The βc dispersion, based on the molecular motion of the chain molecules in the crystalline regions, was observed for A‐PVA around 120–140 °C, and the only primary (αc) dispersion was observed for S‐PVA around 180 °C. The thermal expansion coefficients for the a and c axes of the A‐PVA crystal changed discontinuously around 120 °C, which corresponded to the βc dispersion. For S‐PVA, the coefficient for the (002) plane changed discontinuously around 100 °C, similarly to A‐PVA, but that for the (100) plane remained unchanged between 20 and 220 °C. These results showed that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding of S‐PVA was stronger in the direction of the a axis than in the other directions, suppressing the βc dispersion. The storage modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of the (020) plane (molecular axis) of S‐PVA decreased markedly around 180 °C, and this indicated that the αc dispersion was due to the torsional motion of the molecular chains in the crystalline regions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several water‐soluble polymers were used as templates for the in situ polymerization of pyrrole to determine their effect on the generation of nanosized polypyrrole (PPy) particles. The polymers used include: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene oxide (PEO), poly(vinyl butyral), polystyrene sulfonic acid, poly(ethylene‐alt‐maleic anhydride) (PEMA), poly(octadecene‐alt‐maleic anhydride), poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone), poly(vinyl butyral‐co‐vinyl alcohol‐co‐vinyl acetate), poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide), poly(ethylene oxide‐block‐propylene oxide), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and guar gum. The oxidative polymerization of pyrrole was carried out with FeCl3 as an oxidant. The morphology of PPy particles obtained after drying the resulting aqueous dispersions was examined by optical microscopy, and selected samples were further analyzed via atomic force microscopy. Among the template polymers, PVA was the most efficient in generating stable dispersions of PPy nanospheres in water, followed by PEO and PEMA. The average size of PPy nanospheres was in the range of 160 nm and found to depend on the molecular weight and concentration of PVA. Model reactions and kinetics of the polymerization reaction of pyrrole in PVA were carried out by hydrogen 1H NMR spectroscopy using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To prepare water‐soluble, syndiotacticity‐rich poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrils for various industrial applications, we synthesized syndiotacticity‐rich, low molecular weight PVA by the solution polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at low temperatures with 2,2′‐azobis(2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) as an initiator and successive saponification of poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi). Effects of the initiator and monomer concentrations and the polymerization temperature were investigated in terms of the polymerization behaviors and molecular structures of PVPi and the corresponding syndiotacticity‐rich PVA. The polymerization rate of VPi in THF was proportional to the 0.91 power of the ADMVN concentration, indicating the heterogeneous nature of THF polymerization. The low‐temperature solution polymerization of VPi in THF with ADMVN proved to be successful in obtaining water‐soluble PVA with a number‐average degree of polymerization (Pn) of 300–900, a syndiotactic dyad content of 60–63%, and an ultimate conversion of VPi into PVPi of over 75%. Despite the low molecular weight of PVA with Pn = 800, water‐soluble PVA microfibrillar fibers were prepared because of the high level of syndiotacticity. In contrast, for PVA with Pn = 330, shapeless and globular morphologies were observed, indicating that molecular weight has an important role in the in situ fibrillation of syndiotacticity‐rich PVA. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the interfacial properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) carrying UV‐crosslinkable pendant quaternized stilbazole (styrylpyridinium), PVA‐SbQ. The extent and dynamics of PVA‐SbQ cyclodimerization reactions and crosslinking induced by UV irradiation were monitored in situ and in real time by quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM). Sensograms reflecting time‐dependent changes in density and viscoelasticity of crosslinking films followed a Boltzmann sigmoidal model, depending on precursor film composition and irradiation power. The shifts in QCM frequency and energy dissipation upon PVA‐SbQ cyclodimerization correlated with three photo‐crosslinking phases involving soft‐to‐rigid transitions, namely, induction (initiation), main crosslinking (interaction), and termination. PVA‐SbQ films crosslinked to different degree were used as protein carriers and a slower release profile was determined for the films that underwent more extensive crosslinking. Overall, this study demonstrates for the first time the dynamics of PVA‐SbQ crosslinking and its impact in system viscoelasticity and protein release. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Side‐chain pyrene functional poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was synthesized by using “click chemistry” strategy. First, partial tosylation of PVA with p‐toluene sulfonyl chloride were performed. The resulting PVA‐Ts polymer was then quantitatively converted into poly(vinyl alcohol)‐azide (PVA‐N3) in the presence of NaN3/DMF at 60 °C. Propargyl pyrene was prepared independently as a photoactive click component. Finally, azido functionalized PVA was coupled to propargyl pyrene with high efficiency by click chemistry. Incorporation of pyrene functionality in the resulting polymer was confirmed by spectral analysis. It is also shown that pyrene functionalized PVA (PVA‐Py) exhibited characteristic fluorescence properties and improved solubility in highly polar solvents such as water, DMSO, and DMF as well as less polar solvent such as THF compared with pristine PVA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of granulated semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) superabsorbent hydrogels composed of chitosan‐g‐poly(acrylic acid) (CTS‐g‐PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared by solution polymerization using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The effects of reaction conditions such as the concentration of MBA, the weight ratio of AA to CTS, and the content of PVA on water absorbency were investigated. Infrared (IR) spectra and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses confirmed that AA had been grafted onto CTS backbone, and PVA semi‐interpenetrating into CTS‐g‐PAA networks. SEM analyses indicated that CTS‐g‐PAA/PVA has improved porous surface and PVA was uniformly dispersed in CTS‐g‐PAA network. The semi‐IPN hydrogel containing 10 wt% PVA shows the highest water absorbency of 353 and 53 g g?1 in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. Swelling behaviors revealed that the introduction of PVA could improve the swelling rate and enhance the pH stability of the superabsorbent hydrogel. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a promising biocompatible polymer, whose applicability is limited by its narrow processing window. Here, we adopted a facile approach to broaden the processing windows of PVA based on phosphoric ester of poly(ethylene oxide) (10) nonylphenyl (NP‐10P). Thermal analysis shows that both the melting temperature (Tm) and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVA decrease noticeably as NP‐10P content increases, indicating good miscibility of NP‐10P with PVA. The thermal degradation kinetics suggests composites display excellent thermal stability compared with neat PVA. The pyrolysis mechanism of PVA before and after modification with NP‐10P varies from chain unzipping degradation followed by chain random scission to chain random scission. The processing window of PVA is broadened from 9°C to 98°C with low content NP‐10P (5 wt%). Moreover, the composites maintain significant mechanical performance and transparency. This work provides an environmentally friendly and economical method to improve the possibility of thermal melt processing for PVA.  相似文献

In this paper we report results of both, material preparation and magnetic characterisation, on CoFe2O4 particles of nanometric size formed by in‐situ precipitation within polymer gels. The size of the particles was controlled within a very narrow volume distribution and its average value was shifted from 2 to 10 nm. The existence of nanoparticles showing, at room temperature, coercive field values between 500 and 900 Oe and saturation magnetisations of about 500 emu/cm3, suggest to use these systems to get magnetic recording media with ultra high density. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Polystyrene (PS) films were prepared from this nanocomposite material. After a magnetic field treatment nanoparticles within the PVA films are free to rotate in response to an applied magnetic field. This PVA based nanocomposite film portends a new class of magnetic material with very little or no electrical and magnetic loss.  相似文献

Attapulgite (AT)‐reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite films were prepared by solution‐casting technique. The nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of PVA bulk and PVA/AT nanocomposites have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It has been found that the uniformly dispersed AT nanorods in the matrix have great influence on the glass transition temperature and crystallization behavior of PVA matrix. The Jeziorny method has been employed to analyze the DSC data. The results show that Jeziorny method could describe this system very well. Comparing with the PVA bulk, PVA/AT nanocomposites have higher crystallinity Xt, shorter semicrystallization time t1/2, and higher crystallization rate constant Zc. It can be concluded that AT can be used as an effective nucleating agent and has effects on the growth of crystallites in the crystallization process of PVA matrix. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
