A study of the pectins of wild apples

Pectins have been isolated from five species of wild apples and have been characterized. They contain galacturonic acid, galactose, glucose, and arabinose residues. The titrimetric indices of the substances isolated have been determined. It has been shown by IR spectroscopy the pectins isolated are extracted partially in the form of pectic acids.     

Terpenoids and aromatic compounds from the New Zealand liverworts Plagiochila, Schistochila, and Heteroscyphus species

A new clerodane- and two new ent-rosane-type diterpenoids have been isolated from the New Zealand liverworts Heteroscyphus billardierii and Plagiochila deltoidea, respectively. The known bisbibenzyl compounds and acetophenones have also been isolated from Schistochila glaucescens and Plagiochila fasciculata. Their structures were established by extensive NMR techniques. Chemosystematics of the Plagiochila species have been discussed.

Sulfur-containing sesquiterpenes from Thapsia villosa

Three new sesquiterpenoids bearing sulfurated ester groups have been isolated from the roots of Thapsia villosa L. Their structures have been elucidated by spectroscopic means. This is the first time that a methylthiopropionic acid ester is isolated from natural sources.     

An investigation of the lignins of healthy and wilt-affected cotton plants of variety Tashkent-1 according to the vegetation periods

Summary 1. The dioxane lignins of healthy and wilt-affected cotton plants of variety Tashkent-1 have been isolated and have been studied comparatively in relation to the vegetation period. On the basis of elementary and functional analysis, semiempirical formulas of the dioxane lignins isolated (DLCT-I to -VII) have been determined and it has been established that the dioxane lignins isolated from the wilt-affected plants contain more OCH₃ groups per phenyl-propane structural unit than the lignins of healthy plants.2. Structures of two new flavonoids fromScutellaria ramosissima

The new 2(S)-2′,5-dihydroxy-7-β-D-glucopyranosyloxyflavanone has been isolated from the epigeal part ofScutellaria ramosissima M. Pop. Oroxylin A, woganin, 2′,6′-trihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone, and vanillic and syringic acids, and also the new substance 5,6-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone, have been isolated from the roots of this plant for the first time. The structures of the flavonoids isolated have been established on the basis of chemical transformations and spectral characteristics.     

Investigation of natural compounds by the HPLC method I. Microcolumn HPLC separation of esters of carotane alcohols from the roots of Ferula tenuisecta

Reversed-phase and normal-phase variants of microcolumn high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) for the separation of the preparation Teféstrol, isolated from the roots ofFerula tenuisecta have been developed. Minor components have been isolated. The amounts of the major and minor components in Tefestrol have been determined.     

New sterols and triterpenoids from four edible mushrooms

Four edible mushrooms, Panellus serotinus, Lepista nuda, Tricholoma matsutake and Naematoloma sublateritium, have been investigated chemically. Two new sterols, 5alpha,9alpha-epidioxy-(22E)-ergosta-7,22-diene-3beta,6alpha-diol (1) and 5alpha,9alpha-epidioxy-(22E)-ergosta-7,22-diene-3beta,6beta-diol (2), have been isolated from Panellus serotinus. Compound 2 was also isolated from Lepista nuda. A new sterol, 3beta,5alpha,9alpha,14beta-tetrahydroxy-(22E)-ergosta-7,22-dien-6-one (3), and compound 2 have been isolated from Tricholoma matsutake. Three new triterpenoids, sublateriols A-C (4-6), have been isolated from Naematoloma sublateritium. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectral data.     

Berberis alkaloids. XXIII. Structure of turcberine

Berberine, magnoflorine, palmatine, columbamine, jatrorhizine, epiberberine, berbamine, O-methylisothalicberine, armepavine, corypalline, glaucine, and corydine and the new alkaloid turcberine have been isolated fromBerberis turcomanica Kar., and the structure of turcberine has been established. Alkaloids from Anisocyclea grandidieri H. Bn. (Menispermaceae)

Four alkaloids were isolated from Anisocyclea grandidieri (Fam. Menispermaceae). Trilobine and stebisimine have already been found in other menispermaceous plants, whereas (?)-epistephanine and 12′-O-desmethyltrilobine have not been isolated before.     

Pigment components of Amaranthaceae

Water-soluble pigments have been isolated from the epigeal parts of some Amaranthaceae species. A method for their production has been developed and the amounts of the main coloring substances in them have been determined. A number of exometabolites have been isolated from the deuteromycetePyricularia oryzae Cav., of which harman and O-demethyldiaporthin have been isolated from this species for the first time. The latter is the first example of a hexaketide from fungi of the genusPyricularia, for which only penta- and heptaketides have previously been described. Berberis alkaloids XXXIX. New alkaloids fromB. densiflora

The alkaloid composition of the leaves ofBerberis densiflora has been studied. Berberine, -allocryptopine. oxyacanthine, glaucine, thalicmidine, isocorydine, O-methylcorypalline and the new bases densinine and densiberine have been isolated. The structures of the new alkaloids have been established by a study of spectral characteristics and chemical transformations. This is the first time that any of the known alkaloids, apart from berberine, have been isolated from a plant of this pecies and it is the first time that -allocryptopine and O-methylcorypalline have been isolated from theBerberis genus.     

Pectin substances ofAmaranthus cruentus

Pectin substances have been isolated from the epigeal pan of love-lies-bleeding,Amaranthus cruentus (A. caudatus), and have been characterized. The presence in them of galacturonic acid, galactose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, fructose, and glucose residues has been established. Potent anti-platelet constituents from Centaurea iberica

New naturally occurring nitrogenous compounds 1 and 2, along with a new dimeric lignan glucoside 3, have been isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of Centaurea iberica. Their structures have been elucidated through spectroscopic techniques. All the isolated compounds showed significant platelet aggregation inhibition.

Carexanes from Carex distachya Desf.: revised stereochemistry and characterization of four novel polyhydroxylated prenylstilbenes

Carexanes are unusual secondary metabolites isolated from the herbaceous plant Carex distachya. Four new carexanes have been isolated and characterized from the methanolic leaf extract of the plant. All of the structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. The stereochemistry of all the carexane metabolites isolated from the plant, as well as their ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopic assignment, has been revised on the basis of X-ray analysis of carexane D, chemical correlations, and NOESY/ROESY experiments. All the data suggested a cis junction between B and C rings.     

Alkaloids ofCorydalis stricta

The alkaloids of the epigeal part and roots ofCorydalis stricta have been studied. Of the 23 alkaloids isolated, N-methylcorypalline proved to be new, and its structure has been determined. Stilopine hydroxymethylate and pycnarrhine have been isolated from the genusCorydalis for the first time, and cheilanthiofoline isocorypalmine, scoulerine, isoboldine, reticuline, N-methylcoclaurine, coreximine, juziphine, pancorydine, corypalline, wilsonirine, stilopine, adlumidine, dihydrosanguinarine, adlumine, and bicucculine have been isolated from this species of plant for the first time.Institute of the Chemistry of Plant Substances, Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, Tashkent. Synthesis of bioactive nitrogen heterocycles from marine organisms

Recently many bioactive indole alkaloids have been isolated from marine organisms. Many of them have novel ring systems which are not found in the indole alkaloids isolated from higher plants and molds on the land. We have chosen β-carboline alkaloids, eudistomins and manzamines, as targets for total synthesis.     

Composition of the resinous substances of conifer needles. III. Waxy substances from the woody verdure ofPinus sylvestris

The individual compositions of the wax isolated from an isopropyl extract of the woody verdure and of an industrial sample of needle wax have been investigated with the aid of GLC. The acids isolated from the wax have been identified, and the alcoholic fraction has been separated without identification. It has been shown that the wax obtained from the isopropyl alcohol extracts is suitable for industrial use.Siberian Technological Institute, Krasnoyarsk.
