Polyhedral relaxations have been incorporated in a variety of solvers for the global optimization of mixed-integer nonlinear programs. Currently, these relaxations constitute the dominant approach in global optimization practice. In this paper, we introduce a new relaxation paradigm for global optimization. The proposed framework combines polyhedral and convex nonlinear relaxations, along with fail-safe techniques, convexity identification at each node of the branch-and-bound tree, and learning strategies for automatically selecting and switching between polyhedral and nonlinear relaxations and among different local search algorithms in different parts of the search tree. We report computational experiments with the proposed methodology on widely-used test problem collections from the literature, including 369 problems from GlobalLib, 250 problems from MINLPLib, 980 problems from PrincetonLib, and 142 problems from IBMLib. Results show that incorporating the proposed techniques in the BARON software leads to significant reductions in execution time, and increases by 30% the number of problems that are solvable to global optimality within 500 s on a standard workstation.  相似文献

This work considers the global optimization of general nonconvex nonlinear and mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems with underlying polynomial substructures. We incorporate linear cutting planes inspired by reformulation-linearization techniques to produce tight subproblem formulations that exploit these underlying structures. These cutting plane strategies simultaneously convexify linear and nonlinear terms from multiple constraints and are highly effective at tightening standard linear programming relaxations generated by sequential factorable programming techniques. Because the number of available cutting planes increases exponentially with the number of variables, we implement cut filtering and selection strategies to prevent an exponential increase in relaxation size. We introduce algorithms for polynomial substructure detection, cutting plane identification, cut filtering, and cut selection and embed the proposed implementation in BARON at every node in the branch-and-bound tree. A computational study including randomly generated problems of varying size and complexity demonstrates that the exploitation of underlying polynomial substructures significantly reduces computational time, branch-and-bound tree size, and required memory.  相似文献

We present a decomposition-approximation method for generating convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP). We first develop a general conic program relaxation for QCQP based on a matrix decomposition scheme and polyhedral (piecewise linear) underestimation. By employing suitable matrix cones, we then show that the convex conic relaxation can be reduced to a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In particular, we investigate polyhedral underestimations for several classes of matrix cones, including the cones of rank-1 and rank-2 matrices, the cone generated by the coefficient matrices, the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and the cones induced by rank-2 semidefinite inequalities. We demonstrate that in general the new SDP relaxations can generate lower bounds at least as tight as the best known SDP relaxations for QCQP. Moreover, we give examples for which tighter lower bounds can be generated by the new SDP relaxations. We also report comparison results of different convex relaxation schemes for nonconvex QCQP with convex quadratic/linear constraints, nonconvex quadratic constraints and 0–1 constraints.  相似文献

This paper addresses the global optimization of problems which contain convex-transformable functions. We present algorithms for identification of convex-transformable functions in general nonconvex problems, and introduce a new class of cutting planes based on recently developed relaxations for convex-transformable functions. These cutting planes correspond to the supporting hyperplanes of these convex relaxations. We integrate our recognition and cutting plane generation algorithms into the global solver BARON, and test our implementation by conducting numerical experiments on a large collection of nonconvex problems. Results demonstrate that the proposed implementation accelerates the convergence speed of the branch-and-bound algorithm, by significantly reducing computational time, number of nodes in the search tree, and required memory.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the class of linearly constrained nonconvex quadratic programming problems, and present a new approach based on a novel Reformulation-Linearization/Convexification Technique. In this approach, a tight linear (or convex) programming relaxation, or outer-approximation to the convex envelope of the objective function over the constrained region, is constructed for the problem by generating new constraints through the process of employing suitable products of constraints and using variable redefinitions. Various such relaxations are considered and analyzed, including ones that retain some useful nonlinear relationships. Efficient solution techniques are then explored for solving these relaxations in order to derive lower and upper bounds on the problem, and appropriate branching/partitioning strategies are used in concert with these bounding techniques to derive a convergent algorithm. Computational results are presented on a set of test problems from the literature to demonstrate the efficiency of the approach. (One of these test problems had not previously been solved to optimality). It is shown that for many problems, the initial relaxation itself produces an optimal solution.  相似文献

We show that SDP (semidefinite programming) and SOCP (second order cone programming) relaxations provide exact optimal solutions for a class of nonconvex quadratic optimization problems. It is a generalization of the results by S. Zhang for a subclass of quadratic maximization problems that have nonnegative off-diagonal coefficient matrices of quadratic objective functions and diagonal coefficient matrices of quadratic constraint functions. A new SOCP relaxation is proposed for the class of nonconvex quadratic optimization problems by extracting valid quadratic inequalities for positive semidefinite cones. Its effectiveness to obtain optimal values is shown to be the same as the SDP relaxation theoretically. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate that the SOCP relaxation is much more efficient than the SDP relaxation.  相似文献

We study valid inequalities for optimization models that contain both binary indicator variables and separable concave constraints. These models reduce to a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) when the concave constraints are ignored, or to a nonconvex global optimization problem when the binary restrictions are ignored. In algorithms designed to solve these problems to global optimality, cutting planes to strengthen the relaxation are traditionally obtained using valid inequalities for the MILP only. We propose a technique to obtain valid inequalities that are based on both the MILP constraints and the concave constraints. We begin by characterizing the convex hull of a four-dimensional set consisting of a single binary indicator variable, a single concave constraint, and two linear inequalities. Using this analysis, we demonstrate how valid inequalities for the single node flow set and for the lot-sizing polyhedron can be “tilted” to give valid inequalities that also account for separable concave functions of the arc flows. We present computational results demonstrating the utility of the new inequalities for nonlinear transportation problems and for lot-sizing problems with concave costs. To our knowledge, this is one of the first works that simultaneously convexifies both nonconvex functions and binary variables to strengthen the relaxations of practical mixed-integer nonlinear programs.  相似文献

Probabilistically constrained quadratic programming (PCQP) problems arise naturally from many real-world applications and have posed a great challenge in front of the optimization society for years due to the nonconvex and discrete nature of its feasible set. We consider in this paper a special case of PCQP where the random vector has a finite discrete distribution. We first derive second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation and semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for the problem via a new Lagrangian decomposition scheme. We then give a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) reformulation of the PCQP and show that the continuous relaxation of the MIQP is exactly the SOCP relaxation. This new MIQP reformulation is more efficient than the standard MIQP reformulation in the sense that its continuous relaxation is tighter than or at least as tight as that of the standard MIQP. We report preliminary computational results to demonstrate the tightness of the new convex relaxations and the effectiveness of the new MIQP reformulation.  相似文献

McCormick’s classical relaxation technique constructs closed-form convex and concave relaxations of compositions of simple intrinsic functions. These relaxations have several properties which make them useful for lower bounding problems in global optimization: they can be evaluated automatically, accurately, and computationally inexpensively, and they converge rapidly to the relaxed function as the underlying domain is reduced in size. They may also be adapted to yield relaxations of certain implicit functions and differential equation solutions. However, McCormick’s relaxations may be nonsmooth, and this nonsmoothness can create theoretical and computational obstacles when relaxations are to be deployed. This article presents a continuously differentiable variant of McCormick’s original relaxations in the multivariate McCormick framework of Tsoukalas and Mitsos. Gradients of the new differentiable relaxations may be computed efficiently using the standard forward or reverse modes of automatic differentiation. Extensions to differentiable relaxations of implicit functions and solutions of parametric ordinary differential equations are discussed. A C++ implementation based on the library MC++ is described and applied to a case study in nonsmooth nonconvex optimization.  相似文献

This paper is motivated by the fact that mixed integer nonlinear programming is an important and difficult area for which there is a need for developing new methods and software for solving large-scale problems. Moreover, both fundamental building blocks, namely mixed integer linear programming and nonlinear programming, have seen considerable and steady progress in recent years. Wishing to exploit expertise in these areas as well as on previous work in mixed integer nonlinear programming, this work represents the first step in an ongoing and ambitious project within an open-source environment. COIN-OR is our chosen environment for the development of the optimization software. A class of hybrid algorithms, of which branch-and-bound and polyhedral outer approximation are the two extreme cases, are proposed and implemented. Computational results that demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework are reported. Both the library of mixed integer nonlinear problems that exhibit convex continuous relaxations, on which the experiments are carried out, and a version of the software used are publicly available.  相似文献

A conic integer program is an integer programming problem with conic constraints. Many problems in finance, engineering, statistical learning, and probabilistic optimization are modeled using conic constraints. Here we study mixed-integer sets defined by second-order conic constraints. We introduce general-purpose cuts for conic mixed-integer programming based on polyhedral conic substructures of second-order conic sets. These cuts can be readily incorporated in branch-and-bound algorithms that solve either second-order conic programming or linear programming relaxations of conic integer programs at the nodes of the branch-and-bound tree. Central to our approach is a reformulation of the second-order conic constraints with polyhedral second-order conic constraints in a higher dimensional space. In this representation the cuts we develop are linear, even though they are nonlinear in the original space of variables. This feature leads to a computationally efficient implementation of nonlinear cuts for conic mixed-integer programming. The reformulation also allows the use of polyhedral methods for conic integer programming. We report computational results on solving unstructured second-order conic mixed-integer problems as well as mean–variance capital budgeting problems and least-squares estimation problems with binary inputs. Our computational experiments show that conic mixed-integer rounding cuts are very effective in reducing the integrality gap of continuous relaxations of conic mixed-integer programs and, hence, improving their solvability. In 1964 Tuy introduced a new type of cutting plane, the concavity cut, in the context of concave minimization. These cutting planes, which are also known as convexity cuts, intersection cuts and Tuy cuts, have found application in several algorithms, e.g., branch and bound algorithm, conical algorithm and cutting plane algorithm, and also in algorithms for other optimization problems, e.g., reverse convex programming, bilinear programming and Lipschitzian optimization. Up to now, however, it has not been possible to either prove or disprove the finite convergence of a pure cutting plane algorithm for concave minimization based solely on these cutting planes. In the present paper a modification of the concavity cut is proposed that yields deeper cutting planes and ensures the finite convergence of a pure cutting plane algorithm based on these cuts.  相似文献

We consider a production planning problem where the production process creates a mixture of desirable products and undesirable byproducts. In this production process, at any point in time the fraction of the mixture that is an undesirable byproduct increases monotonically as a function of the cumulative mixture production up to that time. The mathematical formulation of this continuous-time problem is nonconvex. We present a discrete-time mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation that exploits the increasing nature of the byproduct ratio function. We demonstrate that this new formulation is more accurate than a previously proposed MINLP formulation. We describe three different mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approximation and relaxation models of this nonconvex MINLP, and we derive modifications that strengthen the linear programming relaxations of these models. We also introduce nonlinear programming formulations to choose piecewise-linear approximations and relaxations of multiple functions that share the same domain and use the same set of break points in the domain. We conclude with computational experiments that demonstrate that the proposed formulation is more accurate than the previous formulation, and that the strengthened MILP approximation and relaxation models can be used to obtain provably near-optimal solutions for large instances of this nonconvex MINLP. Experiments also illustrate the quality of the piecewise-linear approximations produced by our nonlinear programming formulations.  相似文献

In this work we present a global optimization algorithm for solving a class of large-scale nonconvex optimization models that have a decomposable structure. Such models, which are very expensive to solve to global optimality, are frequently encountered in two-stage stochastic programming problems, engineering design, and also in planning and scheduling. A generic formulation and reformulation of the decomposable models is given. We propose a specialized deterministic branch-and-cut algorithm to solve these models to global optimality, wherein bounds on the global optimum are obtained by solving convex relaxations of these models with certain cuts added to them in order to tighten the relaxations. These cuts are based on the solutions of the sub-problems obtained by applying Lagrangean decomposition to the original nonconvex model. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to available commercial global optimization solvers that are based on branch and bound methods.  相似文献

The DC programming and its DC algorithm (DCA) address the problem of minimizing a function f=gh (with g,h being lower semicontinuous proper convex functions on R n ) on the whole space. Based on local optimality conditions and DC duality, DCA was successfully applied to a lot of different and various nondifferentiable nonconvex optimization problems to which it quite often gave global solutions and proved to be more robust and more efficient than related standard methods, especially in the large scale setting. The computational efficiency of DCA suggests to us a deeper and more complete study on DC programming, using the special class of DC programs (when either g or h is polyhedral convex) called polyhedral DC programs. The DC duality is investigated in an easier way, which is more convenient to the study of optimality conditions. New practical results on local optimality are presented. We emphasize regularization techniques in DC programming in order to construct suitable equivalent DC programs to nondifferentiable nonconvex optimization problems and new significant questions which have to be answered. A deeper insight into DCA is introduced which really sheds new light on DCA and could partly explain its efficiency. Finally DC models of real world nonconvex optimization are reported.  相似文献

Several optimization schemes have been known for convex optimization problems. However, numerical algorithms for solving nonconvex optimization problems are still underdeveloped. A significant progress to go beyond convexity was made by considering the class of functions representable as differences of convex functions. In this paper, we introduce a generalized proximal point algorithm to minimize the difference of a nonconvex function and a convex function. We also study convergence results of this algorithm under the main assumption that the objective function satisfies the Kurdyka–?ojasiewicz property.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a mechanism to tighten Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) based relaxations for solving nonconvex programming problems by importing concepts from semidefinite programming (SDP), leading to a new class of semidefinite cutting planes. Given an RLT relaxation, the usual nonnegativity restrictions on the matrix of RLT product variables is replaced by a suitable positive semidefinite constraint. Instead of relying on specific SDP solvers, the positive semidefinite stipulation is re-written to develop a semi-infinite linear programming representation of the problem, and an approach is developed that can be implemented using traditional optimization software. Specifically, the infinite set of constraints is relaxed, and members of this set are generated as needed via a separation routine in polynomial time. In essence, this process yields an RLT relaxation that is augmented with valid inequalities, which are themselves classes of RLT constraints that we call semidefinite cuts. These semidefinite cuts comprise a relaxation of the underlying semidefinite constraint. We illustrate this strategy by applying it to the case of optimizing a nonconvex quadratic objective function over a simplex. The algorithm has been implemented in C++, using CPLEX callable routines, and two types of semidefinite restrictions are explored along with several implementation strategies. Several of the most promising lower bounding strategies have been implemented within a branch-and-bound framework. Computational results indicate that the cutting plane algorithm provides a significant tightening of the lower bound obtained by using RLT alone. Moreover, when used within a branch-and-bound framework, the proposed lower bound significantly reduces the effort required to obtain globally optimal solutions.  相似文献

In this paper we consider nonlinear integer optimization problems. Nonlinear integer programming has mainly been studied for special classes, such as convex and concave objective functions and polyhedral constraints. In this paper we follow an other approach which is not based on convexity or concavity. Studying geometric properties of the level sets and the feasible region, we identify cases in which an integer minimizer of a nonlinear program can be found by rounding (up or down) the coordinates of a solution to its continuous relaxation. We call this property rounding property. If it is satisfied, it enables us (for fixed dimension) to solve an integer programming problem in the same time complexity as its continuous relaxation. We also investigate the strong rounding property which allows rounding a solution to the continuous relaxation to the next integer solution and in turn yields that the integer version can be solved in the same time complexity as its continuous relaxation for arbitrary dimensions.  相似文献

Existing global optimization techniques for nonconvex quadratic programming (QP) branch by recursively partitioning the convex feasible set and thus generate an infinite number of branch-and-bound nodes. An open question of theoretical interest is how to develop a finite branch-and-bound algorithm for nonconvex QP. One idea, which guarantees a finite number of branching decisions, is to enforce the first-order Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions through branching. In addition, such an approach naturally yields linear programming (LP) relaxations at each node. However, the LP relaxations are unbounded, a fact that precludes their use. In this paper, we propose and study semidefinite programming relaxations, which are bounded and hence suitable for use with finite KKT-branching. Computational results demonstrate the practical effectiveness of the method, with a particular highlight being that only a small number of nodes are required.
