In this paper we study sequences of vector orthogonal polynomials. The vector orthogonality presented here provides a reinterpretation of what is known in the literature as matrix orthogonality. These systems of orthogonal polynomials satisfy three-term recurrence relations with matrix coefficients that do not obey to any type of symmetry. In this sense the vectorial reinterpretation allows us to study a non-symmetric case of the matrix orthogonality. We also prove that our systems of polynomials are indeed orthonormal with respect to a complex measure of orthogonality. Approximation problems of Hermite-Padé type are also discussed. Finally, a Markov’s type theorem is presented.  相似文献

It is proved that a normed space, whose dimension is at least three, admitting a nonzero linear operator reversing Birkhoff orthogonality is an inner product space, which releases the smoothness condition in one of J. Chmieliński’s results. Further characterizations of inner product spaces are obtained by studying properties of linear operators related to Birkhoff orthogonality and isosceles orthogonality.  相似文献

Iterative orthogonalization is aimed to ensure small deviation from orthogonality in the Gram–Schmidt process. Former applications of this technique are restricted to classical Gram–Schmidt (CGS) and column-oriented modified Gram–Schmidt (MGS). The major aim of this paper is to explain how iterative orthogonalization is incorporated into row-oriented MGS. The interest that we have in a row-oriented iterative MGS comes from the observation that this method is capable of performing column pivoting. The use of column pivoting delays the deteriorating effects of rounding errors and helps to handle rank-deficient least-squares problems.

A second modification proposed in this paper considers the use of Gram–Schmidt QR factorization for solving linear least-squares problems. The standard solution method is based on one orthogonalization of the r.h.s. vector b against the columns of Q. The outcome of this process is the residual vector, r*, and the solution vector, x*. The modified scheme is a natural extension of the standard solution method that allows it to apply iterative orthogonalization. This feature ensures accurate computation of small residuals and helps in cases when Q has some deviation from orthogonality.  相似文献

We present a short proof for the fact that if smooth real Banach spaces of dimension three or higher have isomorphic Birkhoff–James orthogonality structures, then they are (linearly) isometric to each other. This generalizes results of Koldobsky and of Wójcik. Moreover, in an arbitrary dimension, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of non-smooth real Banach spaces that admit norm preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff–James orthogonality preservers among them.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with constructions and orthogonality of generalized Sudoku arrays of various forms. We characterize these arrays based on their constraints; for example Sudoku squares are characterized by having strip and sub-square constraints. First, we generalize Sudoku squares to be multi-dimensional arrays with strip and sub-cube constraints and construct mutually orthogonal sets of these arrays using linear polynomials. We add additional constraints motivated by elementary intervals for low discrepancy sequences and again give a construction of these arrays using linear polynomials in detail for 3 dimensional and a general construction method for arbitrary dimension. Then we give a different construction of these hypercubes due to MDS codes. We also analyze the orthogonality of all of the Sudoku-like hypercubes we consider in this paper.  相似文献

We prove a posteriori error estimates for a finite element method for systems of strictly hyperbolic conservation laws in one space dimension, and design corresponding adaptive methods. The proof of the a posteriori error estimates is based on a strong stability estimate for an associated dual problem, together with the Galerkin orthogonality of the finite-element method. Analyzing the sensitivity of model outputs to inputs is important to assess risk and make decisions in engineering application. However, for model with multiple outputs, it is difficult to interpret the sensitivity index since the effect of the dimension and the correlation between multiple outputs are often ignored in the existing methods. In this paper, a new kind of sensitivity analysis method is proposed by use of vector projection and dimension normalization for multiple outputs. Through the dimension normalization, the space of multiple outputs can be unified into a dimensionless one to eliminate the effect of the dimension of the different output. After an affine coordinate system is constructed by considering the correlation of the multiple normalized outputs, a total variance vector for the multiple outputs can be composed by the individual variance of each output. Then, by projecting the variance contribution vector composed by the individual variance contribution of the input to each output on the total variance vector, the new sensitivity indices are proposed for measuring the comprehensive effect of the input on the total variance vector of multiple outputs, it is defined as the ratio of the projection of the variance contribution vector to the norm of the total variance vector. We derive that the Sobol’ indices for a scalar output and the covariance decomposition based indices for multiple outputs are special cases of the proposed vector projection based indices. Then, the mathematical properties and geometric interpretation of the proposed method are discussed. Three numerical examples and a rotating shaft model of an aircraft wing are used to validate the proposed method and show their potential benefits.  相似文献

Existing load-dependent Ritz vector (LDRV) methods employ static recurrence procedures to generate the Ritz vectors. As such, these vector methods are best suited for low-frequency problems. For higher-frequency problems, the existing methods may engender large sets of Ritz vectors, which significantly reduces the methods’ efficiency. A new algorithm is presented for LDRV generation using a quasi-static recurrence procedure, denoted as the quasi-static Ritz vector (QSRV) method. A tuning parameter, designated as the centering frequency, controls the behavior of the QSRV approach, enabling the new method to improve upon existing LDRV methods for particular frequency ranges of interest. Compared with existing LDRV methods, the QSRV method is more efficient (in terms of the number of Ritz vectors), more accurate (in terms of response errors), and more stable (in terms of orthogonality). Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the accuracy, efficiency and generality of the proposed method.  相似文献

This paper deals with the spectral problems for high-order nonsymmetric difference operators. The method of investigation is based on the analysis of the genetic sums formulas for the moments of the operator. The parameters of these sums are shown to be connected with coefficients of the introduced vector Stieltjes continued fraction. The connections with vector orthogonality, Hermite—Padé approximation, and Hankel determinants are investigated. This gives a tool for the analysis of the solution of the direct and inverse spectral problem of the operator. It is applied to the integration of hierarchy of the discrete KdV equations. Refinable function vectors with arbitrary support are considered. In particular, necessary conditions for stability are given and a characterization of the symbol associated with a stable refinable function vector in terms of the transfer operator is provided: this is a generalization of Gundy’s theorem to the vector case. The proof adapts the tools provided in [S. Saliani, On stability and orthogonality of refinable functions, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 21 (2006) 254–261]. Though complications arise from noncommuting matrix products, the fundamental ideas are the same.  相似文献

Summary In this note we consider a real normed vector spaceX equipped with the isosceles orthogonality or the Pythagorean orthogonality, both of them defined by R. C. James. It is known that any odd, isosceles orthogonally additive mapping fromX into an Abelian group is unconditionally additive whenever dimX 3. Also, it is worth mentioning that this result was the first of this sort based on a non-homogeneous relation. In this context, we derive here the same for the other non-homogeneous orthogonality, the Pythagorean one, answering in part a pretty old and famous question. In this short note, irreducible square-integrable representations of left Hilbert algebras are studied in detail. Orthogonality relations are formulated and proved which contain as a special case the orthogonality relations for square-integrable representations of unimodular locally compact groups. A self-adjoint (generally unbounded) operator is defined on the representation space, the inverse of whose square has some claim to the title “formal dimension operator” since in the case of unimodular groups the inverse of the square of this operator is just the formal dimension times the identity operator. Although the methods used are quite different, this note was inspired by some similar results of M. Duflo and C. Moore for nonunimodular groups.  相似文献

Because of its orthogonality, interpretability and best representation, functional principal component analysis approach has been extensively used to estimate the slope function in the functional linear model. However, as a very popular smooth technique in nonparametric/semiparametric regression, polynomial spline method has received little attention in the functional data case. In this paper, we propose the polynomial spline method to estimate a partial functional linear model. Some asymptotic results are established, including asymptotic normality for the parameter vector and the global rate of convergence for the slope function. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our estimation method by some simulation studies.  相似文献

It is proved that those vector fields, under suitable conditions always verified in dimension 3, admit a semi-complete representative. In this paper, we propose unconstrained and constrained posynomial Geometric Programming (GP) problem with negative or positive integral degree of difficulty. Conventional GP approach has been modified to solve some special typer of GP problems. In specific case, when the degree of difficulty is negative, the normality and the orthogonality conditions of the dual program give a system of linear equations. No general solution vector exists for this system of linear equations. But an approximate solution can be determined by the least square and also max-min method. Here, modified form of geometric programming method has been demonstrated and for that purpose necessary theorems have been derived. Finally, these are illustrated by numerical examples and applications.  相似文献

The definition, in previous studies, of vector Stieltjes continued fractions in connexion with spectral properties of band operators with intermediate zero diagonals, left unsolved the question of a direct definition of their coefficients in terms of the original data, a vector of Stieltjes series. A new version of the vector QD algorithm allows to extend to the vector case the result which was known for one scalar function. Beside this connexion, it solves the inverse Miura transform and gives interesting identities between general band matrix and sparse band matrix. It gives also some effective computations of coefficients linked to vector orthogonality.  相似文献
