Abstract

Oil hydrocarbons represent a great proportion of organic compounds in the atmosphere. Information about these compounds in the atmosphere of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia is lacking. In this study, n-alkanes and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in air particulates were determined. The highest median concentration levels of n-alkanes in three urban areas and three areas near oil production centers were 121 ng/m3 and 42.9 ng/m3, respectively. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were also detected, although they are present in too low concentration for reliable quantitative measurement by GC and GC/MS techniques. A positive correlation was found between the concentration levels of n-alkanes in air particulates and the total suspended particulates measured at most locations. The carbon preference index (CPI) and the presence of the unresolved complex envelope suggested an anthropogenic origin for the n-alkanes.  相似文献

In addition to color, ash and electrical conductivity (EC), the levels of 14 minerals were investigated in 23 varieties of honey from Saudi Arabia and six other countries. The quantities of the macrominerals obtained were as follows (in ppm): K (298.60–491.40), Mg (80.70–199.30), Ca (60.75–99.95), P (21.10–33.29), and Na (15.69–26.93). The quantities of trace minerals were as follows (in ppm): Fe (67.18–98.13), I (12.61–94.68), Mn (4.15–6.04), Zn (3.44–5.72), Li (1.15–4.26), Co (1.00–1.32), and Ni (0.15–0.67). The quantities of the heavy metals Pb and Cd were found to be 0.06–0.23 and 0.00–0.16, respectively. The values of the tested elements—color, ash and EC—varied among the tested honeys according to their botanical origin. Dark honeys, especially acacia honeys, had higher elemental content and EC values than lighter ones. Saudi and Yemeni seder honeys exhibited no distinctive characteristics in their tested parameters. The levels of heavy metals indicated that the tested honeys were safe for human consumption.  相似文献

Seawater intrusion (SWI) is the main threat to fresh groundwater (GW) resources in coastal regions worldwide. Early identification and delineation of such threats can help decision-makers plan for suitable management measures to protect water resources for coastal communities. This study assesses seawater intrusion (SWI) and GW salinization of the shallow and deep coastal aquifers in the Al-Qatif area, in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. Field hydrogeological and hydrochemical investigations coupled with laboratory-based hydrochemical and isotopic analyses (18O and 2H) were used in this integrated study. Hydrochemical facies diagrams, ionic ratio diagrams, and spatial distribution maps of GW physical and chemical parameters (EC, TDS, Cl, Br), and seawater fraction (fsw) were generated to depict the lateral extent of SWI. Hydrochemical facies diagrams were mainly used for GW salinization source identification. The results show that the shallow GW is of brackish and saline types with EC, TDS, Cl, Br concentration, and an increasing fsw trend seaward, indicating more influence of SWI on shallow GW wells located close to the shoreline. On the contrary, deep GW shows low fsw and EC, TDS, Cl, and Br, indicating less influence of SWI on GW chemistry. Moreover, the shallow GW is enriched in 18O and 2H isotopes compared with the deep GW, which reveals mixing with recent water. In conclusion, the reduction in GW abstraction in the central part of the study area raised the average GW level by three meters. Therefore, to protect the deep GW from SWI and salinity pollution, it is recommended to implement such management practices in the entire region. In addition, continuous monitoring of deep GW is recommended to provide decision-makers with sufficient data to plan for the protection of coastal freshwater resources.  相似文献

The present study describes the chemical composition of the essential oil of different plant parts of Devrra tortuosa; in vivo and in vitro biological activities of plant extract and essential oils. Apiol was found to be the major component of the oil (between 65.73% and 74.41%). The best antioxidant activities were observed for the oil of flowers (IC50 = 175 μg/ml). The samples of stems and roots exhibit lower antioxidant activity (IC50 = 201 μg/ml and 182 μg/ml, respectively). The values of IC50 showed that the extracts of methanol exhibit the highest antioxidants activities (IC50 = 64.8 102 μg/ml). EOs showed excellent antifungal activity against yeasts with low azole susceptibilities (i.e. Malassezia spp. and Candida krusei). The MIC values of oils varied between 2.85 mg/mL and 27 mg/mL. The obtained results also showed that the plant extracts inhibited the germination and the shoot and root growth of Triticum æstivum seedlings.  相似文献

Unconsolidated earthen surface materials can retain heavy metals originating from different sources. These metals are dangerous to humans as well as the immediate environment. This danger leads to the need to assess various geochemical conditions of the materials. In this study, the assessment of topsoil materials’ contamination with heavy metals (HMs) was conducted. The material’s representative spatial samples were taken from various sources: agricultural, industrial, and residential areas. The materials include topsoil, eolian deposits, and other unconsolidated earthen materials. The samples were analyzed using the ICP-OES. The obtained results based on the experimental procedure indicated that the average levels of the heavy metals were: As (1.21 ± 0.69 mg/kg), Ba (110.62 ± 262 mg/kg), Hg (0.08 ± 0.18 mg/kg), Pb (6.34 ± 14.55 mg/kg), Ni (8.95 ± 5.66 mg/kg), V (9.98 ± 6.08 mg/kg), Cd (1.18 ± 4.33 mg/kg), Cr (31.79 ± 37.9 mg/kg), Cu (6.76 ± 12.54 mg/kg), and Zn (23.44 ± 84.43 mg/kg). Subsequently, chemometrics modeling and a prediction of Cr concentration (mg/kg) were performed using three different modeling techniques, including two artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, namely, generalized neural network (GRNN) and Elman neural network (Elm NN) models, as well as a classical multivariate statistical technique (MST). The results indicated that the AI-based models have a superior ability in estimating the Cr concentration (mg/kg) than MST, whereby GRNN can enhance the performance of MST up to 94.6% in the validation step. The concentration levels of most metals were found to be within the acceptable range. The findings indicate that AI-based models are cost-effective and efficient tools for trace metal estimations from soil.  相似文献

A high‐throughput, rapid, sensitive, environmentally friendly, and economical supercritical fluid chromatography with triple quadruple mass spectrometry method was established and validated for the first time to determine a cerebral stroke treatment drug named 3‐n‐butylphthalide in dog plasma. Plasma samples were prepared by protein precipitation with methanol and the analytes were eluted on an ACQUITY UPC2TM HSS‐C18 SB column (3 × 100 mm, 1.8 μm) maintained at 50°C. The mobile phase comprised supercritical carbon dioxide/methanol (90:10, v/v) at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min, the compensation solvent was methanol at a flow rate of 0.2 mL/min and the total run time was 1.5 min per sample. The detection was carried out on a tandem mass spectrometer with an electrospray ionization source. Calibration curves were linear over the concentration range of 1.02–1021.00 ng/mL (r2 ≥ 0.993) with the lower limit of quantification of 1.02 ng/mL. The intra‐ and inter‐day precision values were below 15% and the accuracy was from 97.90 to 103.70% at all quality control levels. The method was suitable for a pharmacokinetic study of 3‐n‐butylphthalide in beagle dogs.  相似文献

Thirty‐three species of mosquitoes have been reported from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Several of these mosquitoes, Anopheles gambiae Giles s.l., Anopheles stephensi Liston, Culex pipiens Linnaeus, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, Stegomyia aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedimorphus vexans arabiensis (Patton) are known vectors of human and animal diseases. In this study, the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of eight mosquito species using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry were analyzed. Wild collected fourth‐instar larvae were reared, and single, newly emerged, unfed adult females were used for the analysis. A total of 146–160 peaks were detected from the cuticular extracts by gas chromatography. Repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD Post Hoc test was used to test for quantitative differences in relative hydrocarbon quantity. In addition, a linear regression model was applied using Enter method to determine the diagnostic peaks for the eight mosquito specimens. The ANOVA test indicated that relative peaks were significant (P < 0.05) when selected pairs of peaks were compared. Also, seven compounds showed qualitative differences among the five mosquito vectors tested. The classes of constituents present were n‐alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, trimethylalkanes, alkenes, branched aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes and esters. These compounds have a carbon chain length ranging from 8 to 18 carbons. The most abundant compound in all adult mosquito specimens was n‐hexylacrylate [retention time (RT) 6.73 min], which was not detected in Cx. pipiens. In Cx. pipiens, the most abundant peak was benzaldehyde (RT 2.98 min). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry is a suitable method to identify adult mosquitoes, especially from focal areas of public health concern such as Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. Ginkgolides are the primarily active components in Ginkgo products that are popular worldwide. However, few studies have evaluated the bioavailability of ginkgolides and the effects of food on it after oral administration of ginkgolides. In this article, pharmacokinetics and absolute bioavailability of the primary components in ginkgolide extracts were evaluated in beagle dogs. For the first time, we showed that the fed dogs had significantly increased area under the concentration–time curve and peak concentration relative to the fasted dogs based on the data from both the prototype form and total lactones of ginkgolide A (GA) and ginkgolide B (GB). In terms of the free form of the prototype ginkgolides, the absolute bioavailabilities of GA and GB were 34.8 and 5.2% in the fasted dogs, respectively, which significantly increased to an average of 78.6 and 17.0%, respectively, in the fed dogs. In terms of acidified total lactones, the absolute bioavailabilities of GA and GB were 7.5 and 14.5% in the fed dogs, and the percentages declined to 4.1 and 3.7% in the fasted dogs, respectively. It was suggested that administration of ginkgolides after meals could promote the in vivo exposure and the bioavailability of GA and GB, and hence potentially enhance therapeutic outcomes.  相似文献

Withaferin A (WA) is one of the major bioactive steroidal lactones with extensive pharmacological activities present in the plant Withania somnifera. The absolute oral bioavailability of WA remains unknown and human‐related in vitro data are not available. Therefore, in the present study, the absolute oral bioavailability of WA in male rats and the in vitro screening of absorption factors by Q‐trap and LC–MS/MS analysis were conducted to explore possible clinical properties of WA. The developed and validated analytical methods were successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic studies and in vitro measurement of WA. The oral bioavailability was determined to be 32.4 ± 4.8% based on intravenous (5 mg/kg) and oral (10 mg/kg) administrations of WA in male rats. The in vitro results showed that WA could be easily transported across Caco‐2 cells and WA did not show as a substrate for P‐glycoprotein. Moreover, the stability of WA was similar between male rat and human in simulated gastric fluid (stable), in intestinal microflora solution (slow decrease) and in liver microsomes (rapid depletion, with a half‐life of 5.6 min). As such, the first‐pass metabolism of WA was further verified by rat intestine‐liver in situ perfusion, revealing that WA rapidly decreased and 27.1% remained within 1 h, while the content of three major metabolites (M1, M4, M5) identified by Q‐trap increased. This perfusion result is consistent with the oral bioavailability results in vivo. The first‐pass metabolism of WA might be the main barrier in achieving good oral bioavailability in male rats and it is predicted to be similar in humans. A sensitive, selective and high‐throughput UPLC‐MS/MS method was developed and validated for the determination of a novel c‐Met tyrosine kinase inhibitor, QBH‐196, in rat plasma. QBH‐196 and its analog BH357 (IS) were extracted from rat plasma using a mixture of dichloromethane and N‐hexane (2:3, v/v). The chromatographic separation was carried out on Phenomenex C18 column (50 × 2.1 mm, 2.6 µm particle size) with a gradient mobile phase of methanol (A) and water containing 0.05% formic acid (B) at a flow rate of 0.2 mL/min. The assay was performed by positive electrospray ionization in multiple reaction monitoring mode using transitions of m/z 622.68 → 140.41 for QBH‐196 and m/z 591.19 →126.21 for the IS, respectively. Good linearity was obtained over the concentration range of 8.0–4000 ng/mL (r2 > 0.99) for QBH‐196 and the lower limit of quantification was 8.0 ng/mL in rat plasma. Validations of the method, including its sensitivity, extraction recovery, matrix effect, intra‐ and inter‐day precision, accuracy and stability, were all within acceptable limits. The established method was successfully applied to determine absolute oral bioavailability of QBH‐196 in rats for the first time. The mean oral absolute bioavailability of QBH‐196 was found to be about 40.8% and the elimination half‐life was 40.0 ± 13.1 h. This result suggested that QBH‐196 exhibits good oral absorption in vivo, which is very important for the further development of QBH‐196 as a new oral anticancer drug. Carbon nanotube (CNT), a well-known carbon-based nanomaterial has drawn much attention in many application fields including chemistry in the last few decades. Many researchers and scientists have shown huge interest to improve the extraction methodologies and adopt their applications in combination with chromatography technique. With respect to this, the exceptional applications of CNTs have been introduced as extraction sorbent due to their excellent inborn physical and chemical properties. In particular, CNTs have consistently been used as adsorbents in various techniques including solid-phase micro-extraction, solid-phase extraction, micro dispersive slid phase extraction, magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction, analytes enrichment, sample fractionation and clean-up as well as support for many derivatization reactions. Many research papers have discussed the successful use of CNTs to overcome the limitations of the extraction techniques due to their excellent sorbent capacity. In addition, considering the clear need to make chromatographic technique more successful, the applications of CNTs have been reported in the literatures in details as stationary and pseudo-stationary phases for the separation and extraction of challenging compounds. Because of the higher thermal and chemical stability, CNTs have been anticipated as stationary phase modifier for chromatographic applications to avoid bleeding of the columns and enable the analysis even at very high temperature (1200 °C). In liquid chromatography CNTs have primarily been used in combination with other packing materials (silica) and sometimes incorporated in a porous polymeric monolith. Therefore, the recent utilizations of CNTs as extraction materials and stationary phases have been illustrated in the current review and a table listing the details applications of CNTs in aforementioned field is provided as well. We believe that the review will help researcher to gain vast knowledge about application of carbon nanotubes in the field of separation chemistry.  相似文献
