Electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization have been used to investigate the inhibition effect of a new pyrimidine heterocyclic derivative, namely 2-mercapto-4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidine-5-carbonitrile (MPD) on copper corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solutions at 25 ± 1 °C. The electrochemical investigations showed that MPD gives sufficient inhibition against copper corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solutions. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements have shown that the MPD inhibit both the cathodic and anodic processes and thus it classified as mixed-type inhibitor. EIS measurements indicate that the values of constant phase elements (CPEs) tend to decrease and both charge-transfer resistance and inhibition efficiency tend to increase by increasing the inhibitor concentration. Electrochemical kinetic parameters obtained using EFM methods were comparable with that calculated from traditional measurements (EIS and potentiodynamic polarization). Molecular simulation technique was used to investigate the adsorption configuration of MPD on copper surface. Number of electrons transferred from MPD to the copper surface was calculated by semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations.  相似文献

The corrosion inhibition of aluminum and its alloys is the subject of tremendous technological importance due to the increased industrial applications of these materials. This study reports the results of potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the corrosion inhibition of AA6061 aluminum alloys in seawater using sodium benzoate as an inhibitor. The electrochemical measurements for aluminum alloys in seawater after varied immersion period showed that the presence of sodium benzoate significantly decreases the corrosion currents densities (icorr), corrosion rates and double layer capacitance (Cdl), as simultaneously increase the values of polarization resistance (Rp). Charge transfer process and development of thin film on the specimen have been proven by morphology study using SEM.  相似文献

The inhibition effect of 2-carboxymethylthio-4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-6-oxo-1,6-dihy-dropyrimidine-5-carbonitrile (CPD) towards the corrosion of copper was studied in aerated stagnant 3.5% NaCl at 25 °C using ac techniques include electrochemical frequency modulation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as well as potentiodynamic polarization measurements. Corrosion rates determined using electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) which measures the non-linear behaviour of a corroding system are compared with corrosion rates obtained from traditional electrochemical techniques and show good agreement. Data obtained from EIS were analyzed to model the corrosion inhibition process through equivalent circuit. Polarization measurements showed that CPD acts as mixed-type inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency increases with an increase in the concentration of CPD. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the copper surface in the sodium chloride solution was found to obey Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm. A mixed inhibition mechanism is proposed for the inhibitive effects of CPD as revealed by potentiodynamic polarization technique.  相似文献

Natural-based corrosion inhibitors have gained great research interest thanks to their low cost and higher performance. In this work, the chemical composition of the methanolic extract of Ammi visnaga umbels (AVU) was evaluated by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) and applied for corrosion inhibition of carbon steel (CS) in 1.0 mol/L HCl using chemical and electrochemical techniques along with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and theoretical calculations. A total of 46 compounds were identified, representing 89.89% of the overall chemical composition of AVU extract, including Edulisin III (72.88%), Binapacryl (4.32%), Khellin (1.97%), and Visnagin (1.65%). Chemical (Weight loss) and electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization curves (PPC), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) techniques revealed that investigated extract can be used as an effective corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1.0 mol/L HCl solution. At a low dose of 700 ppm, the inhibitory action of AVU extract reached an inhibition efficiency of 84 percent. According to polarization tests, the investigated extract worked as a mixed inhibitor, protecting cathodic and anodic corrosion reactions. The EIS test showed that upon the addition of AVU extract to HCl solution, the polarization resistance increased while the double layer decreased. SEM images showed a protected CS surface in the inhibited solution. Quantum chemical calculations by Density Functional Theory (DFT) for the main components confirmed the major role of heteroatoms and aromatic rings as adsorption sites. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to study the adsorption configuration of the main components on the Fe(1 1 0) surface. Outcomes from this study further confirmed the significant advantage of using plant-based corrosion inhibitors for protecting metals and alloys.  相似文献

Natural-based corrosion inhibitors have gained great research interest thanks to their low cost and higher performance. The Cupressus arizonica fruit essential oil (CAFEO) has a higher extraction yield than leaves; however, it has less antibacterial and antifungal activities. The three main components in the CAFEO were α-pinene (51.07%), myrcene (17.92%), and limonene (9.66%). Essential oils with a higher percentage of α-pinene were found to have outstanding corrosion inhibition properties. Therefore, herein, the CAFEO was investigated as a green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel (CS) in 1.0 mol/L HCl using electrochemical, i.e., potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. The experimental results revealed that CAFEO successfully inhibited the carbon steel corrosion in 1.0 mol/L HCl solution. Results from PDP indicated that the inhibitor had a mixed-type effect with a predominance cathodic character. EIS data showed that the charge transfer resistance of the CS electrode increased from 20.9 Ω cm2 in blank solution to 294.5 Ω cm2 in HCl solution inhibited with 0.5 g/L of CAFEO at 298 K, leading to a significant decrease in the double layer capacitance values and an inhibition efficiency (η%) of 93%. The high temperatures showed a negative effect on the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the tested inhibitor. At 323 K, the η% of CAFEO decreased to 77%. Besides, SEM images showed that the inhibitor formed a protective barrier against acid attack, preventing carbon steel from corrosion. Theoretical calculations by Density Functional Theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the reactivity of the three main components of CAFEO.  相似文献

The inhibitive action of 4-methyl pyrazole (4MP) against the corrosion of iron (99.9999%) in solutions of hydrochloric acid has been studied using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). At inhibitor concentration range (10?3–10?2 M) in 1.0 M acid, the results showed that 4MP suppressed mainly the anodic processes of iron corrosion in 1.0 M HCl by adsorption on the iron surface according to Temkin adsorption isotherm. Both potentiodynamic and EIS measurements reveal that 4MP inhibits the iron corrosion in 1.0 M HCl and that the efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentration. Data obtained from EIS were analyzed to model the corrosion inhibition process through an equivalent circuit.  相似文献

The corrosion inhibition effect of newly formulated Schiff base 2-((E)-((E)-2-hydrazone-1, 2-diphenylethylidene) amino phenol) (HDAP) ligand L derived from Benzil monohydrazone and 2-Aminophenol on mild steel in 1 M HCl was examined. Electrochemical (Tafel and EIS) and mass loss techniques were employed to evaluate its corrosion protection efficiency. The inhibition efficiency (η %) was elevated with raise in concentration of compound L.Maximum inhibition efficiency of 94.18% was obtained at 0.01 M concentration of HDAP from Tafel polarisation curve. From electrochemical impedance (EIS) studies, it was confirmed that increase in concentration of HDAP led to enhancement of the charge transfer resistance. Both physical and chemical types of adsorptions were observed for the Schiff base via π-bonding electrons which obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The SEM picture revealed development of a thin layer on metallic surface. Quantum chemical evaluations were conducted to find out the mechanism of corrosion retardation power of HDAP.  相似文献

A new corrosion inhibitor namely o-Chloroaniline-N-benzylidene (o-CANB) has been synthesized and its inhibitive performance toward the corrosion of Al-Pure in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid has been investigated. Corrosion inhibition was studied by chemical method (weight loss) and electrochemical techniques including polarization method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The present study has shown that this inhibitor is good in acidic media and the inhibition efficiency up to >99% in 1.0 M HCl. Polarization measurement revealed that the investigated inhibitor is a mixed type with a predominant action on cathode. Impedance measurement showed that the charge transfer resistance (Rct) increased and double layer capacitance (Cdl) decreased with an increase in the inhibitor's concentration. Obtained results about inhibition efficiency from weight loss, polarization study and EIS are in good agreement with each other. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the metal surface in the acid solution was found to obey Langmuir's adsorption isotherm.  相似文献

The inhibition effect of hexadecyl pyridinium bromide (HDPB) as a cationic surfactant on the corrosion behavior of some Egyptian austenitic stainless steel SS 304L, SS 316H and SS 304H in 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions was investigated by using potentiodynamic polarization technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicate that HDPB is a good inhibitor for the samples under investigation in 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions. In addition, the inhibition efficiency η% increases with the inhibitor concentration while decreases with the increasing temperature referring to physical adsorption. The adsorption of the inhibitor obeys a Temkin adsorption isotherm. Polarization curves show that HDPB is a mixed inhibitor in H2SO4 solutions. The results obtained from polarization and impedance measurements are in good agreement. Activation-free energies, enthalpies, and entropies for the inhibition process of HDPB were determined.  相似文献

This work is intended to examine the microbially influenced corrosion on galvanized steel (GS) caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The efficacy of Butea monosperma (palash) leaf extract to mitigate the corrosion caused by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans was investigated in modified Barr's medium. Weight loss and electrochemical analysis were performed to check the corrosion rate at regular time intervals. SEM images were performed to understand the level of deterioration of the metal surfaces. Image analysis of the unprotected sample showed the presence of pits. From the gravimetric study, the maximum inhibition efficiency (IE) of 98% was obtained with 500 ppm of Palash leaf extract for the fourth-week sample. With the addition of 500 ppm of palash extract, the sulfide concentration decreases to 0 ppm from 123 ppm. Outcomes of potentiodynamic polarization (PP) studies showed that the extract disturbs the cathodic reaction significantly and moves the corrosion potential to a more negative value and IE was about 71% from PP studies. FTIR and GC-MS analysis was performed to recognize the plausible chemical compounds present in Palash leaf powder. EIS results confirmed that the resistance to corrosion increases substantially with the addition of inhibitor. The mechanism for corrosion inhibition has been proposed based on the results obtained.  相似文献

The inhibition effect of 1-methyl pyrazole (MPA) on the acidic corrosion of iron in 1.0 M HCl was studied at different concentrations (10?3–10?2 M) by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and EIS measurements. It is found from the polarization studies that methyl pyrazole (MPA) behaves mainly as anodic inhibitor in HCl. Values of polarization resistance (Rp) and double layer capacitance (Cdl) in the absence and presence of MPA in 1.0 M HCl are determined. The adsorption of MPA on iron surface from HCl is found to obey Temkin adsorption isotherm.

The efficiency of stearate as a corrosion inhibitor for magnesium alloy ZE41 has been studied in sodium sulfate medium, employing electrochemical techniques like potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of polarization study imply that stearate functions as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor with a predominant anodic control. The adsorption of stearate on alloy surface is found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The proposed inhibition mechanism involved adsorption of stearate onto metal surface, followed by precipitation of magnesium stearate within the microdefects of Mg(OH)2 surface film which enhanced the barrier effect of an otherwise porous partially protective film.  相似文献

The influence of the addition of poly(4-vinylpyridine-hexadecyl bromide) P4VP-Alkyl 50?% newly synthesized on the corrosion of mild steel in molar hydrochloric acid has been investigated by weight-loss measurements combined with linear potential scan voltammetry (I?CE) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The polymer reduces the corrosion rate and the inhibition efficiency (E?%) of P4VP-Alkyl 50?% increases with its concentration and attains 95?% at 300?mg/L. E?% obtained from cathodic Tafel plots, EIS, and gravimetric methods were in good agreement. The inhibitor was adsorbed on the iron surface according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Polarization measurements also show that the compound acts as a cathodic inhibitor.  相似文献

To improve the corrosion protection properties of zinc-rich silicate coatings on steel, zirconium pretreatment loaded with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) 0.025 % (v/v) and the partial replacement of spherical zinc by flake ZnAl alloy were investigated. DC polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) show that the zirconium pre-treated layer containing APTES improves the corrosion protection of the bare steel. Zinc-rich silicate coatings containing flake ZnAl with and without pretreatment were evaluated by EIS, salt spray test and pull-off test. Pretreatment with a zirconium conversion layer reduces corrosion products and adhesion loss (from 16.53% to 12.54%) while the performance of corrosion protection significantly increased from 2003 Ω.cm2 to 2640 Ω.cm2 in comparison with the non-pretreated samples. The results show that flake ZnAl pigment (5 wt%) significantly improves corrosion resistance and prolongs the duration of cathodic protection of zinc-rich silicate coatings.  相似文献

Through using chemical and electrochemical methods, the theoretical and experimental investigation of the expired vilazodone drug's ability to prevent corrosion on aluminium (Al) in a corrosive medium of HCl (1 M) has been examined. Weighing tests (WL), electrochemical (impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP)), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests at 25 °C have all been used to investigate Vilazodone's capability to prevent corrosion of Al in 1 M HCl in the concentration in the range of 25–150 ppm. The corrosion inhibition effect of the investigate Vilazodone's against Al in acid environment was investigated weight loss and electrochemical methods. The highest % inhibition efficiency (%IE) was 95% resulted from weight loss technique at the highest concentration for inhibitor. According to the PDP data, this examined vilazodone function as a mixed-type inhibitor, impacting both the anodic and cathodic reactions. The inhibitors covered the active points of the metal surface, according to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), to prevent corrosion. It was discovered that the inhibitor adsorption on the Al surface obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isothermal model. AFM, SEM, and FTIR surface examinations proved the inhibitor had a significant protective effect against Al dissolution in 1 M HCl. The outcomes from chemical and electrochemical methods are relatively consistent. Vilazodone acted as an effective corrosion inhibitor, according to all of the experimental data.  相似文献

The effect of triphenyltin2–thiophene carboxylate (TTC) on the corrosion of steel in hydrochloric acid medium was studied using gravimetric, electrochemical polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The percentage inhibition efficiency was found to increase with increasing concentration of inhibitor to reach 97% at 10?3 M. Polarisation study shows that TTC is an efficient inhibitor and acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. EIS results indicate the increase of resistance transfer (RT) and the decrease of double layer capacitance (Cdl) with TTC concentration. Triphenyltin2–thiophene carboxylate molecules lead to the formation of a protective layer on the surface of steel. The inhibitor is adsorbed on the steel surface according to Langmuir isotherm.  相似文献

In this study, a protective Ni–Co alloy coating was prepared on sintered NdFeB magnet applying electrodeposition technique. A pure nickel coating was also studied for a comparison. The microstructure, surface morphologies, and chemical composition of coatings were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The corrosion protection properties of coatings for NdFeB magnet in neutral 3.5 wt.% NaCl solutions were evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The microstructure and surface morphologies analysis showed that the addition of cobalt element into matrix metal Ni altered the preferential orientation of pure nickel coating from (2 0 0) crystal face for pure nickel coating to (1 1 1) crystal face for Ni–Co alloy coating, and made the surface morphologies more compact and uniform due to the grain-refining. The results of potentiodynamic polarization test showed that compared with pure nickel coating, Ni–Co alloy coating exhibited much nobler corrosion potential (E corr) and lower corrosion current density (j corr), indicating better anticorrosive properties. The long-term immersion test by dint of EIS indicated that the Ni–Co alloy coating still presented high impedance value of 1.9 × 105 Ω cm2 with the immersion time of 576 h indicating the excellent anticorrosive properties, and corrosion protection properties of nickel coating for NdFeB magnet practically disappeared with the immersion time of 144 h, which also indicated that the Ni–Co alloy coating provided better corrosion protection properties for the NdFeB magnet compared with nickel coating.  相似文献

Recently, the hydrolysis of Schiff bases under experimental conditions gives suspicion for their corrosion inhibition performance. The current study employs a stable Schiff base namely, 2,2′-{propane-1,3-diylbis[azanylylidene (E) methanylylidene]}bis(6-methoxyphenol) (LPD) as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl solution. The presence of the characteristic peak of the imine group in UV-visible spectra was taken as an indicator for LPD stability in acidic media. The inhibition action was examined using electrochemical techniques including potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) besides gravimetric measurement. The inhibition efficiency reached 95.93 % for 0.75 mM LPD after 24 h of immersion at 25 °C. This high efficiency is owing to the presence of the characteristic imine group and other heteroatoms and π- electrons of the aromatic benzene rings. The mechanism of inhibition depends on adsorption phenomena on mild steel surface which obeys Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated values of adsorption equilibrium constant (Kads), adsorption free energy ΔGads, adsorption enthalpy ΔHads and adsorption entropy ΔSads indicated spontaneous exothermic adsorption process of both physical and chemical nature. By rising temperature, the inhibition efficiency of LPD was decreased. The calculated activation energy was increased as the concentration of LPD increased. LPD was considered as a mixed-type inhibitor as indicated from PDP measurements. The obtained surface morphology and composition analysis using SEM/EDS, AFM and FTIR techniques ensures the high efficiency of LPD as corrosion inhibitor.  相似文献
