In this work, an analytical expression for the complex dielectric function is proposed, which includes both discrete and continuum exciton effects. We have introduced Lorentzian broadening in Elliott’s formula and compare our model to other models based on Elliott’s formula. The results show that our model is superior to other models for the dielectric function of ZnO in the literature. Excellent agreement with experimental data for the dielectric function of ZnO for both perpendicular and parallel polarizations has been obtained using our model. Opposite to most other deposition methods, the dominating nucleation and growth mechanism during ion-beam deposition of energetic ions in the range between 10 eV and 10 keV occurs in a region of a few nanometers below the surface of the growing film. This process is called ‘subplantation’ – emphasizing the implantation of ions into a subsurface region. Ordering and phase formation is a result of the interaction of the deposited ions with the solid state that takes place within the short time scale of femto- and picoseconds. This extreme non-equilibrium process can result in metastable amorphous or crystalline structures. This review will present several examples of the influence of the deposition parameters on the properties of diamond-like materials synthesized using mass-selected ion-beam deposition. Furthermore, several existing models of the deposition process will be presented and critically discussed. Transient effects on diffusion and activation during post-implantation anneals are a major obstacle for the further miniaturization of ultra-large-scale integrated semiconductor devices. The ohmic contact characteristics of Au/Pt/Ti on degenerated doped n-GaAs were evaluated. Structural and electrical properties were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Auger Energy Spectrum (AES) and a HP4145B parameter analyzer. The structural analysis revealed a TiAs phase in the interface between metal multilayer and GaAs at higher annealing temperatures. Electrical measurement showed a minimum ohmic contact resistance of 3×10-4 Ω cm2. The dominant current mechanism was found to be thermionic emission with a barrier height of Φb, of 0.09 V by comparing the experimental data with different theoretical models. Motivated by the recent prediction that InSb nanometer-diameter filaments can exhibit exotic physical properties, we have synthesized this material and have characterized the filaments. In this report, we describe the finding of an unusual phase of InSb. This new phase occurs when an InSb filament has a diameter of less than 100 nm. High-resolution X-ray-diffraction studies of InSb filaments, having radii ≅33.0 nm, indicate the InSb crystal lattice to be tetragonal, S.G. I4/mmm, with a unit-cell volume 12 times larger than that of the β-tin phase observed in bulk InSb above 2.0 GPa. The density of an InSb nanorod, as calculated from X-ray-diffraction data, is ∼22% more than that of the zinc-blende phase of InSb at ambient conditions, implying that the nanorod experiences a pressure of ∼2 GPa. In contrast, InSb nanorods with radii ≥50.0 nm are observed to show zinc-blende structure and densities nearly the same as that of the bulk. Passive mode locking and saturable absorber Q-switching of neodymium lasers at 1.3 μm with PbS-doped phosphate glasses are demonstrated. Q-switched pulses of 120 ns (0.1 μJ) in duration (energy) and the average output power of 3 mW from a quasi-cw diode-pumped Nd3+:KGW laser and ultrashort pulses of a maximum of 250 μJ in energy and 150 ps in duration from a Nd3+:YAP laser were obtained. The bleaching decay rate of the samples was found to increase with the Quantum Dot’s size decreasing due to the enhancement of quantum confinement effects for smaller dots and stronger overlapping of the electron and trap state wave functions. We show the very particular behavior of focused-ion-beam etching in macroporous silicon. We demonstrate that, contrary to bulk samples, a porous substrate allows extremely high-aspect-ratio patterns to be etched at submicrometer scales. Thanks to the pre-introduced porosity, the secondary effects that limit the pattern depth in bulk-sample etching, namely the sputtered material redeposition as well as the beam ‘self-focusing’ effects, are strongly reduced in a porous sample. In this case the walls between the pores are sputtered in an almost independent way. The etching of deep and straight patterns is feasible. Combined with photoelectrochemical etching that generates the initial macropores, three-dimensional (3D) lattices can be obtained, as demonstrated by 3D photonic crystal fabrication. The influence of the surface roughness of polypropylene on the contact angle hysteresis is investigated by means of ethylene glycol drops in order to estimate the true Young’s equilibrium contact angle. A new relationship between the contact angle hysteresis and Wenzel’s contact angle is derived. In addition, the determination of Wenzel’s roughness factor by means of scanning force microscopy opens an alternative way to obtaining Young’s equilibrium contact angle without any surface manipulation. We report an investigation of the ablation of NaCl crystals at the 157-nm wavelength of the F2 laser where there is very strong excitonic absorption. Probe-beam deflection and etch-rate measurements show that the interaction is characterised by a low ablation threshold (∼80 mJ cm-2) and a capability for controllable material removal at the nanometer level. Scanning electron microscopy of the exposed surfaces show this to be microscopically smooth but with fine cracks present. It is demonstrated that micron-scale features can be formed in NaCl using 157-nm laser ablation, a result attributed to the strongly localised optical and thermal nature of the interaction. Using a simple wet-chemical route, we synthesized CuO nanorods with diameters of ca. 5–15 nm and lengths of up to 400 nm. The purity, crystallinity, morphology, structure features, and chemical composition of the as-prepared CuO nanorods were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Electron microscopy with atomic sensitivity enables us to obtain a direct image of the intra-molecular structure of metallofullerenes encapsulated inside single-walled carbon nanotubes. By a comparison of high-resolution images with a simulation to extract the relative atom positions for encaged metal atoms in each molecule, the distribution of the molecular orientations and interactions between adjacent molecules in metallofullerene peapods have been statistically analyzed. The results are suggestive of strong interactions between fullerene–fullerene and fullerene–tube in peapods at room temperature. Surface structuring and compositioning in aluminum alloy 2024-T3 were demonstrated using a femtosecond pulse laser. Surface nanostructuring was developed as a function of laser parameters and the surface micrographs of the scanning electron microscopy were characterized as a function of incident laser fluence. Surface compositioning was performed by selectively removing the elements on the surface of the sample. Femtosecond studies of highly excited electrons were performed by a pump–probe technique, and the thermalization time was found to be in a range of 1.5–3 ps, increasing with incident fluence. The coherent combining of two Nd:YAG lasers using a Vernier–Michelson-type cavity has been demonstrated. The spectral behaviour and the energetic performance are reported. We firstly show that the combining efficiency is not strongly spoilt by the gain imbalance between the two amplifying media, and secondly, that despite the interferometric nature of the cavity, the Vernier–Michelson laser can withstand environmental perturbations without alteration in output power. An extreme ultraviolet (EUV) laser light source based on high-harmonic generation is presented. Coherent radiation in the photon energy range hν=20–120 eV is produced in the conversion media argon, neon and helium. High-harmonic radiation in the energy range 20–50 eV is applied to investigate photoemission spectra of Pt (111) and CO/Pt (111). In the photoemission spectra of the clean surface, new secondary electron emission structures are found which influence the cross section analysis of the CO states. When taking these Pt resonances into consideration, the 4σ and 5σ CO shape resonances are found at photon energies of 37 eV and 28 eV, respectively. Additionally, a resonance at hν=31 eV is also observed for the CO 1π state, in contrast to formerly published experimental data. Experimental and theoretical data suggest that this resonance is not connected to the well-known shape resonances in the σ-channel. Based on theoretical approaches, it is identified as an autoionization resonance. A pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with intracavity sum frequency mixing was developed generating energies of up to 16 mJ in the 281–293 nm wavelength range. Both OPO process and sum frequency mixing are pumped by the harmonics of a single, medium-sized Nd:YAG laser. The system is characterized by a high overall efficiency (∼4% conversion from 1064 nm to the UV), a very compact set-up and stable and reliable operation. This system was successfully employed to measure tropospheric ozone using the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique and shows much promise as a lidar transmitter in airborne case studies as well as in unattended lidar systems for long-term monitoring. An unattended ozone profiling system could already be successfully realized. Low-threshold field electron emission (FEE) is reported for periodic arrays of micro-tips produced by laser ablation of Si wafers. The best samples show emission at threshold fields as low as 4–5 V/μm for n-type Si substrates and of 1–2 V/μm for p-doped Si substrates, as measured with a flat-screen technique. Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray electron spectroscopy reveal island-like deviation of the SiO2 stoichiometry on the tip surfaces, with lateral dimensions of less than 100 nm. Microscopic studies using a special field-emission STM show that the emission originates from well-conducting regions of sub-micron size. The experimental data suggest FEE from the tip arrays by a geometric field enhancement of both the individual micro-tip and the narrow conducting channels in the tip body. A compact, diode-based difference-frequency laser system combined with a photoacoustic detection scheme is presented for trace-gas sensing. It features a broad, continuous tuning range (3.2–3.7 μm), a narrow line width (154 MHz), and room-temperature operation, and thus allows numerous gas species to be measured both isolated and in mixtures of different gases. Several trace-gas species of environmental interest were detected, and gas mixtures were analysed. The detection limits are in the low-ppmV range, e.g. 1.3 ppmV for methane, 1.8 ppmV for ethane, and 1.2 ppmV for hydrogen chloride. We describe the measurement of the line width of an atom laser beam extracted from a Bose–Einstein condensate. Using a novel magnetic resonance imaging technique, we find that the energy width of the atom laser beam is Fourier-limited by the duration of the output-coupling process. The conduction band electronic structure and the electron dynamics of the clean InSb(111)2×2 surface have been studied by laser based pump-and-probe photoemission. The results are compared to earlier studies of the InSb(110) surface. It is found that both the energy location and the time dependence of the photoexcited structures are very similar for the two surfaces. This indicates that the dominant part of the photoemission signal in the conduction band region is due to excitations of electrons in the bulk region and that the surface electronic states play a minor role. The fast decay of the excited state, τ∼12 ps, indicates that diffusion of hot electrons into the bulk is an important mechanism. Polarization-dependent spatial beam profiles of femtosecond X-ray pulses generated by a laser Compton scheme were measured. The X-ray pulses were generated by the interaction at an angle of 90° between 100-fs laser light and a 3-ps, 3π-mm mrad electron beam. The polarization of the laser light was linear in two different directions, either parallel or perpendicular to the electron beam axis.
