The two-phase boundary layer in laminar film condensation was solved by Koh for the free convection regime and forced convection regime using the similarity method. But the problem on mixed convection does not admit similarity solutions. The current work develops a local nonsimilarity method for the full spectrum of mixed convection, with a generic boundary layer formulation reduced to two specific cases mathematically identical to Koh’s formulations on the two limiting cases for either free or forced convection. Other solution methods for mixed convection in the literature are compared and critically evaluated to ensure a high level of accuracy in the current method. The current solution is used to extend Fujii’s correlation for mixed convection to the region where the energy convection effect is significant but has been hitherto neglected. The modified Fujii correlation provides a practical engineering tool for evaluating laminar film condensation with a mixed convection boundary layer.  相似文献

This paper deals with a theoretical (numerical) analysis of the effects that blowing/injection and suction have on the steady mixed convection or combined forced and free convection boundary layer flows over a vertical slender cylinder with a mainstream velocity and a wall surface temperature proportional to the axial distance along the surface of the cylinder. Both cases of buoyancy forces aid and oppose the development of the boundary layer are considered. Similarity equations are derived and their solutions are dependent upon the mixed convection parameter, the non-dimensional transpiration parameter and the curvature parameter, as well as of the Prandtl number. Dual solutions for the previously studied mixed convection boundary layer flows over an impermeable surface of the cylinder are shown to exist also in the present problem for aiding and opposing flow situations.  相似文献

A nonsimilar boundary layer analysis is presented for the problem of mixed convection in power-law type non-Newtonian fluids along a vertical plate with power-law surface heat flux distribution. The mixed convection regime is divided into two regions, namely, the forced convection dominated regime and the free convection dominated regime. The two solutions are matched. Numerical results are presented for the details of the velocity and temperature fields. A discussion is provided for the effect of viscosity index on the surface heat transfer rate. This paper describes the vapor side buoyancy effects on the mass transfer in absorption in the presence of a nonabsorbable gas. Experimental results on a diffusion-absorption refrigerator (DAR) indicate that the vapor side buoyancy effects on the mass transfer are significant when the density of the nonabsorbable gas is significantly less than that of the absorbable gas. A rectangular enclosure absorption problem is first solved to demonstrate the buoyancy effects without the presence of a forced flow. Then, mixed convection heat transfer in a circular pipe is simulated in such a way as to be analogous to the mixed convection mass-transfer problem in the DAR absorber. Finally, the vapor side mixed convection absorption between parallel plates is simulated including the effects of the absorbed mass on the mass balance. The Sherwood number dependence on the mass transfer Grashof number and Reynolds number as well as the effects of the suction boundary conditions are discussed. Each of these simulations had individual limitations, but, taken together, they illuminate the major aspects of the absorption physics.  相似文献

We consider the problem of mixed oscillatory and steady modes of nonlinear compositional convection in horizontal mushy layers during the solidification of binary alloys. Under a near-eutectic approximation and the limit of large far-field temperature, we determine a number of two- and three-dimensional weakly nonlinear mixed solutions, and the stability of these solutions with respect to arbitrary three-dimensional disturbances is then investigated. The present investigation is an extension of the problem of mixed oscillatory and steady modes of convection, which was investigated by Riahi (J Fluid Mech 517: 71–101, 2004), where some calculated results were inaccurate due to the presence of a singular point in the equation for the linear frequency. Here we resolve the problem and find some significant new results. In particular, over a wide range of the parameter values, we find that the properties of the preferred and stable solution in the form of particular subcritical mixed standing and steady hexagons appeared to be now in much better agreement with the available experimental results (Tai et al., Nature 359:406–408, 1992) than the one reported in Riahi (J Fluid Mech 517:71–101, 2004). We also determined a number of new types of preferred supercritical solutions, which can be preferred over particular values of the parameters and at relatively higher values of the amplitude of convection.  相似文献

The effect of surface melting on the dual solutions that can arise in the problem of the mixed convection boundary-layer flow past a vertical surface embedded in a non-Darcian porous medium is considered. The problem is described by M, melting parameter, \(\lambda \), mixed convection parameter, and \(\gamma \), the flow inertia coefficient, numerical results being obtained in terms of these three parameters. It is seen that the melting phenomenon reduces the heat transfer rate and enhances the boundary-layer separation at the solid–liquid interface. Asymptotic solutions for the forced convection, \(\lambda =0\), and free convection, large \(\lambda \), limits are derived.  相似文献

In this article nonsimilarity solution for mixed convection from a horizontal surface in a saturated porous medium was obtained for the case of variable surface heat flux. The entire mixed convection regime, ranging from pure forced convection to pure free convection, is considered by introducing a single nonsimilarity parameter. Heat transfer results are predicted by employing four different flow models, namely, Darcy's law, the Ergun model, and the Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy model with constant and variable porosity. The variable porosity effect is approximated by an exponential function. Effects of transverse thermal dispersion are taken into consideration in the energy equation, along with variable stagnant thermal conductivities. The formulation of the present problem shows that the flow and heat transfer characteristics depend on five parameters, that is, the power in the variation of surface heat flux, the nonsimilarity mixed-convection parameter, the inertia effect parameter, the boundary effect parameter, and the ratio of thermal conductivity of the fluid phase to that of the solid phase. Numerical results for the local Nusselt number variations, based on the various flow models, are presented for the entire mixed convection regime. The impacts␣of different governing parameters on the heat transfer results are thoroughly investigated. Received on 7 August 1997  相似文献

Experiments have been conducted in a low speed horizontal wind tunnel to study the interaction of radiation and conduction on mixed convective heat transfer from an upward facing horizontal flat plate in air. Differential interferometer has been used to measure local convective heat fluxes. It has been observed that interaction between surface radiation and convection is significant for a low thermal conductivity plate material. On the basis of the previous and current studies, it can be stated that the multi-mode interaction problem is an outcome of the nature of convective boundary layer. The interaction between different modes of heat transfer would remain similar irrespective of the nature of convection (free/mixed or forced).  相似文献

The density dependent flow and transport problem in groundwater is solved numerically by means of a mixed finite element scheme for the flow equation and a mixed finite element-finite volume time-splitting based technique for the transport equation. The proposed approach, spatially second order accurate, is used to address the issue of grid convergence by solving on successively refined grids the salt lake problem, a physically unstable downward convection with formation of fingers. Numerical results indicate that achievement of grid convergence is problematic due to ill-conditioning arising from the strong nonlinearities of the mathematical model.  相似文献

This work is focused on the numerical modeling of steady, laminar, heat and mass transfer by MHD mixed convection from a semi-infinite, isothermal, vertical and permeable surface immersed in a uniform porous medium in the presence of thermal radiation and Dufour and Soret effects. A mixed convection parameter for the entire range of free-forced-mixed convection is employed and the governing equations are transformed into non-similar equations. These equations are solved numerically by an efficient, implicit, iterative, finite-difference scheme. The obtained results are checked against previously published work on special cases of the problem and are found to be in excellent agreement. A parametric study illustrating the influence of the thermal radiation coefficient, magnetic field, porous medium inertia parameter, concentration to thermal buoyancy ratio, and the Dufour and Soret numbers on the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration as well as the local Nusselt and the Sherwood numbers is conducted. The obtained results are shown graphically and the physical aspects of the problem are discussed.  相似文献

A generalized differential-integral quadrature (GDQ) discretization technique was used to solve a mixed heat convection problem in a body-fit coordinate system in its primitive variables form. A special treatment of the boundary condition to satisfy the continuity and momentum equations along the boundaries with the implementation of the GDQ method was investigated. Comparisons with the experimental and numerical results of other investigators are presented and discussed. In contrast with the existing published results, this highly accurate method was able to reveal extremely weak net circulation around the outer cylinder. In the horizontal annulus with the mixed heat convection problem the combination of unbalance of buoyancy and centrifugal forces causes net circulation. The net circulation decreases and approaches to zero with the rise of Rayleigh number, and it reaches its minimum value with high eccentricity when the inclination angle of eccentricity is π.  相似文献

The problem of combined conduction-mixed convection-surface radiation from a vertical electronic board provided with three identical flush-mounted discrete heat sources is solved numerically. The cooling medium is air that is considered to be radiatively transparent. The governing equations for fluid flow and heat transfer are converted from primitive variable form to stream function-vorticity formulation. The equations, thus obtained, are normalised and then are converted into algebraic form using a finite volume based finite difference method. The resulting algebraic equations are then solved using Gauss–Seidel iterative method. An optimum grid system comprising 151 grids along the board and 111 grids across the board is chosen. The effects of various parameters, such as modified Richardson number, surface emissivity and thermal conductivity on temperature distribution along the board, maximum board temperature and relative contributions of mixed convection and radiation to heat dissipation are studied in detail. Further, the contributions of free and forced convection components of mixed convection to board temperature distribution and peak board temperature are brought out. The exclusive roles played by surface radiation and buoyancy in the present problem are clearly elucidated.  相似文献

The mixed convection heat transfer of upward molten salt flow in a vertical annular duct is experimentally and numerically studied. The heat transfer performances of mixed convection are measured under Reynolds number 2,500–12,000 and inlet temperature 300–400 °C, and Nusselt number of molten salt flow with cooled inner wall monotonically increases with buoyancy number. The mixed convection is further simulated by low-Reynolds number k-ε model and variable properties, and the heat transfer tendency from numerical results agrees with that from experiments. At low Reynolds number, the natural convection plays more important role in the mixed convection. As the buoyancy number rises, the thickness of flow boundary layer near the inner wall increases, while the effective thermal conductivity remarkably rises, so the enhanced heat transfer of mixed convection is mainly affected by the effective thermal conductivity due to turbulent diffusion.  相似文献

The problem of mixed convection around a liquid sphere that experiences a rotation about its axis parallel to the free stream is studied numerically using a finite- difference technique. The coupled boundary-layer energy and momentum equations are numerically solved over a wide range of Grashof number that represents the cases of aiding and opposing free convection and for wide range of the spin parameter Ta/Re2. The surface of the sphere also rotates as a result of the shear stress exerted from the external flow of air. The effect of both parameters on the velocity components as well as the temperature within the thermal boundary-layer is presented. Results show that increasing the aiding free convection and the spin parameter cause increases in the shear stress and the local heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

A computational study is performed on two-dimensional mixed convection in an annulus between a horizontal outer cylinder and a heated, rotating, eccentric inner cylinder. The computation has been done using a non-orthogonal grid and a fully collocated finite volume procedure. Solutions are iterated to convergence through a pressure correction scheme and the convection is treated by Van Leer's MUSCL scheme. The numerical procedure adopted here can easily eliminate the ‘Numerical leakage’ phenomenon of the mixed convection problem whereby strong buoyancy and centrifugal effects are encountered in the case of a highly eccentric annulus. Numerical results have been obtained for Rayleigh number Ra ranging from 7×103 to 107, Reynolds number Re from 0 to 1200 and Prandtl number Pr from 0.01 to 7. The mixed rotation parameter σ (=Ra/PrRe2) varies from ∞ (pure natural convection) to 0.01 with various eccentricities ε. The computational results are in good agreement with previous works which show that the mixed convection heat transfer characteristics in the annulus are significantly affected by σ and ε. The results indicate that the mean Nusselt number Nu increases with increasing Ra or Pr but decreases with increasing Re. In the case of a highly eccentric annulus the conduction effect becomes predominant in the throat gap. Hence the crucial phenomenon on whereby Nu first decreases and then increases can be found with increasing eccentricity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effects of thermal dispersion and thermal stratification on mixed convection about a vertical surface in a porous medium are studied. The conservation equations that govern the problem are reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The resulting equations are solved on the basis of the local similarity approximation. The results indicate that both dispersion and stratification effects have considerable influence on the heat transfer rate.  相似文献
