The dependence of optical, electronic and thermal penetration zones on the thickness of nanoscale layers grown on silicon wafers is reported. Tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) and amorphous carbon nitride (a-CxNy) films were prepared by inverse pulsed laser deposition (IPLD). Single-pulse modification thresholds for femtosecond laser processing proved to be dependent on the actual film thickness below 60 nm for ta-C and 90 nm for a-CxNy. The modification behaviour was governed by multiphoton processes. An effective penetration depth of the laser radiation in a-CxNy was of ca. 110 nm in accordance with two-photon absorption. Both the emergence length of ballistic hot electrons and the heat diffusion length are negligible in these thin film materials. The lower bulk value of the threshold fluence of the a-CxNy films as compared to ta-C is mainly controlled by optical contributions due to nitrogen-related defects.  相似文献

In order to smooth the rough surface and further improve the wear-resistance of coarse chemical vapor deposition diamond films, diamond/tetrahedral amorphous carbon composite films were synthesized by a two-step preparation technique including hot-filament chemical vapor deposition for polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and subsequent filtered cathodic vacuum arc growth for tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C). The microstructure and tribological performance of the composite films were investigated by means of various characterization techniques. The results indicated that the composite films consisted of a thick well-grained diamond base layer with a thickness up to 150 μm and a thin covering ta-C layer with a thickness of about 0.3 μm, and sp3-C fraction up to 73.93%. Deposition of a smooth ta-C film on coarse polycrystalline diamond films was proved to be an effective tool to lower the surface roughness of the polycrystalline diamond film. The wear-resistance of the diamond film was also enhanced by the self-lubricating effect of the covering ta-C film due to graphitic phase transformation. Under dry pin-on-disk wear test against Si3N4 ball, the friction coefficients of the composite films were much lower than that of the single PCD film. An extremely low friction coefficient (∼0.05) was achieved for the PCD/ta-C composite film. Moreover, the addition of Ti interlayer between the ta-C and the PCD layers can further reduce the surface roughness of the composite film. The main wear mechanism of the composite films was abrasive wear.  相似文献

The structure of thin films deposited by pulsed laser ablation (PLD) is strongly dependent on experimental conditions, like laser wavelength and fluence, substrate temperature and pressure. Depending on these parameters we obtained various kinds of carbon materials varying from dense, mainly tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), to less compact vertically oriented graphene nano-particles. Thin carbon films were grown by PLD on n-Si 〈100〉 substrates, at temperatures ranging from RT to 800°C, from a rotating graphite target operating in vacuum. The laser ablation of the graphite target was performed by a UV pulsed ArF excimer laser (λ=193 nm) and a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, operating in the near IR (λ=1064 nm). The film structure and texturing, characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis, performed at grazing incidence (GI-XRD), and the film density, evaluated by X-ray reflectivity measurements, are strongly affected both by laser wavelength and fluence and by substrate temperature. Micro-Raman and GI-XRD analysis established the progressive formation of aromatic clusters and cluster condensation into vertically oriented nano-sized graphene structures as a direct function of increasing laser wavelength and deposition temperature. The film density, negatively affected by substrate temperature and laser wavelength and fluence, in turn, results in a porous bulk configuration and a high macroscopic surface roughness as shown by SEM characterisation. These structural property modifications induce a relevant variation also on the emission properties of carbon nano-structures, as evidenced by field emission measurements. This work is dedicated to our friend Giorgio who passed away 20th August.  相似文献

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films deposited using filtered cathodic vacuum arc technology have been applied to the interlayer of surface acoustic wave devices with a ZnO/Si configuration. The phase velocity in the multilayered structure was analyzed in the first instance by theoretical calculations and was then measured by means of a network analyzer. It has been shown that the ta-C interlayer between piezoelectric film and Si substrate can strikingly increase the phase velocity of the surface acoustic wave. The greater the interlayer thickness is and the higher the content of the sp3 hybridization is, the faster surface acoustic wave propagates. However, the increment of phase velocity gradually decreases with increasing interlayer thickness. It was confirmed in this paper that the measured values of the phase velocity as a function of the interlayer thickness agree with the theoretical calculations.  相似文献

Au nanoparticles dispersed SiO2-TiO2 composite films have been prepared by a novel wet process, Liquid Phase Deposition (LPD) method. The composite films were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM, ICP, SEM and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the SiO2-TiO2 composite films containing AuIII and AuI ionic species were co-deposited from a mixed solution of ammonium silicofluoride, ammonium hexafluorotitanate, boric acid and tetrachloroauric acid. The heat treatment induced the reduction of Au ions and formation of Au nanoparticles in the film. TEM observation revealed that the Au nanoparticles with 5-10 nm in diameter were found to be dispersed uniformly in the SiO2-TiO2 matrix. The optical absorption band due to the surface plasmon resonance of dispersed Au particles were observed at the wavelength of 550 nm and shifted toward longer wavelength with increasing heat treatment temperature. The post-growth modification of diamond-like amorphous hydrogenated carbon a-C:H films by laser treatment has been studied by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. a-C:H films grown on Si substrates by benzene decomposition in a rf glow discharge were irradiated with 15 ns pulses of a KrF-excimer laser with fluences in the range of E=50–700 mJ/cm2. At fluences below 100 mJ/cm2 an increase in the number of graphitic clusters and in their ordering was evidenced from Raman spectra, while the film structure remained amorphous according to electron microscopy and electron diffraction observations. At higher fluences the appearance of diamond particles of 2–7 nm size, embedded into the lower crystallized graphitic matrix, was observed and simultaneously a progressive growth of graphite nanocrystals with dimensions from 2 nm to 4 nm was deduced from Raman measurements. The maximum thickness of the crystallized surface layer (400 nm) and the degree of laser annealing are limited by the film ablation which starts at E>250 mJ/cm2. The laser-treated areas lose their chemical inertness. In particular, chemical etching in chromium acid becomes possible, which may be used for patterning the highly inert carbon films.  相似文献

Using 50 fs ( ∼ 2×1018 W/cm2) and 2 ps ( ∼ 5×1016 W/cm2) pulses from a Ti:Sa multi-TW laser at 800 nm wavelength large Xe-clusters ( 105...106 atoms per cluster) have been excited. Absolute yield measurements of EUV-emission in a wavelength range between 10 nm and 15 nm in combination with cluster target variation were carried out. The ps-laser pulse has resulted in about 30% enhanced and spatially more uniform EUV-emission compared to fs-laser excitation. Circularly polarized laser light instead of linear polarization results in enhanced emission which is probably caused by electrons gaining higher energies by the polarization dependent optical field ionization process. An absolute emission efficiency at 13.4 nm of up to 0.8% in 2π sr and 2.2% bandwidth has been obtained. Received 11 January 2001 and Received in final form 27 March 2001  相似文献

We investigate the growth process and structural properties of phosphorus incorporated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:P) films which are deposited at different substrate biases by filtered cathodic vacuum arc technique with PH3 as the dopant source. The films are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, residual stress measurement, UV/VIS/NIR absorption spectroscopy and temperature-dependent conductivity measurement. The atomic fraction of phosphorus in the films as a function of substrate bias is obtained by XPS analysis. The optimum bias for phosphorus incorporation is about −80 V. Raman spectra show that the amorphous structures of all samples with atomic-scaled smooth surface are not remarkably changed when PH3 is implanted, but some small graphitic crystallites are formed. Moreover, phosphorus impurities and higher-energetic impinging ions are favorable for the clustering of sp2 sites dispersed in sp3 skeleton and increase the level of structural ordering for ta-C:P films, which further releases the compressive stress and enhances the conductivity of the films. Our analysis establishes an interrelationship between microstructure, stress state, electrical properties, and substrate bias, which helps to understand the deposition mechanism of ta-C:P films.  相似文献

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were fabricated by pulsed laser ablation of a liquid target. During deposition process the growing films were exited by a laser beam irradiation. The films were deposited onto the fused silica using 248 nm KrF eximer laser at room temperature and 10−3 mbar pressure. Film irradiation was carried out by the same KrF laser operating periodically between the deposition and excitation regimes. Deposited DLC films were characterized by Raman scattering spectroscopy. The results obtained suggested that laser irradiation intensity has noticeable influence on the structure and hybridization of carbon atoms deposited. For materials deposited at moderate irradiation intensities a very high and sharp peak appeared at 1332 cm−1, characteristic of diamond crystals. At higher irradiation intensities the graphitization of the amorphous films was observed. Thus, at optimal energy density the individual sp3-hybridized carbon phase was deposited inside the amorphous carbon structure. Surface morphology for DLC has been analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicating that more regular diamond cluster formation at optimal additional laser illumination conditions (∼20 mJ per impulse) is possible.  相似文献

Au/SiO2 nanocomposite films were prepared by radio frequency sputtering technique and annealing. The above nanocomposite films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface of the nanocomposite films was uniform with the particle diameter of 100-300 nm. The size of Au crystallites increased on increasing annealing time. The luminescent behavior of the nanocomposite films was characterized by photoluminescence (PL) with different excitation wavelengths. Two emission peaks at around 525 nm and 560 nm were observed with the excitation wavelength at 325 nm. An intensive emission peak at around 325 nm was observed with the excitation wavelength at 250 nm, which is related to the defective structure of the amorphous SiO2 layer because of oxygen deficiency, and could be applied to many fields, such as ultraviolet laser and ultraviolet detector.

In this work, we used a crossed plasma configuration where the ablation of two different targets in a reactive atmosphere was performed to prepare nanocrystalline thin films of ternary compounds. In order to assess this alternative deposition configuration, titanium carbonitride (TiCN) thin films were deposited. Two crossed plasmas were produced by simultaneously ablating titanium and graphite targets in an Ar/N2 atmosphere. Films were deposited at room temperature onto Si (100) and AISI 4140 steel substrates whilst keeping the ablation conditions of the Ti target constant. By varying the laser fluence on the carbon target it was possible to study the effect of the carbon plasma on the characteristics of the deposited TiCN films. The structure and composition of the films were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy and non-Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy. The hardness and elastic modulus of the films was also measured by nanoindentation. In general, the experimental results showed that the TiCN thin films were highly oriented in the (111) crystallographic direction with crystallite sizes as small as 6.0 nm. It was found that the hardness increased as the laser fluence was increased, reaching a maximum value of about 33 GPa and an elastic modulus of 244 GPa. With the proposed configuration, the carbon content could be easily varied from 42 to 5 at.% by changing the laser fluence on the carbon target.  相似文献

The tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films with more than 80% sp3 fraction firstly were deposited by filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA) technique. Then the energetic nitrogen (N) ion was used to bombard the ta-C films to fabricate nitrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) films. The composition and structure of the films were analyzed by visible Raman spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result shows that the bombardment of energetic nitrogen ions can induce the formation of CN bonds, the conversion of C-C bonds to CC bonds, and the increase of size of sp2 cluster. The CN bonds are made of CN bonds and C-N bonds. The content of CN bonds increases with the increment of N ion bombardment energy, but the content of C-N bonds is inversely proportional to the increment of nitrogen ion energy. In addition, C≡N bonds are not existed in the films. By the investigation of AFM (atom force microscopy), the RMS (root mean square) of surface roughness of the ta-C film is about 0.21 nm. When the bombarding energy of N ion is 1000 eV, the RMS of surface roughness of the ta-C:N film decreases from 0.21 to 0.18 nm. But along with the increment of the N ion energy ranging from 1400 to 2200 eV again, the RMS of surface roughness of the ta-C:N film increases from 0.19 to 0.33 nm.  相似文献

High quality CVD diamond: a Raman scattering and photoluminescence study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
High quality synthetic diamonds were grown on single-crystal silicon by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (CVD). A careful optimisation of both the experimental setup and the growth parameters was necessary before that the achievement of the best results was made possible. The films were deposited using a CH4-H2 gas mixture at methane concentrations variable in the range 0.6-2.2%, while the substrate temperature was fixed at 750 °C. Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) were utilised to monitor the quality of the deposited films and to study the spatial distribution of defects, respectively. Micro-Raman analysis shows that linewidths of the diamond peak lower than 2.4 cm-1 can be easily measured at the growth surface, indicating that the crystalline quality of individual grains is comparable to that of the best natural diamonds. The excellent phase purity of the diamond microcrystals at the growth surface is witnessed by the complete absence of any non-diamond carbon feature and by a very weak luminescence background in the 1.6-2.4 eV spectral range. A worsening of the quality of the diamond particles is found moving from the growth surface towards the film-substrate interface. A photoluminescence feature at about 1.68 eV, commonly associated to Si impurities, is distinctly observed as the exciting laser beam is focused close to the interface. A progressive degradation of the global quality of the films is found with increasing methane concentration in the gas mixture, as witnessed by an increased PL background in the films grown at higher methane concentrations. Evidence is presented for the formation of a solid phase based on the smallest fullerene, C20, in thin diamond-like carbon films deposited by ultraviolet laser ablation from diamond onto nickel substrates at room temperature in the presence of 10-4 torr of cyclohexane or benzene. Laser desorption mass spectrometry from the films shows the presence of C20, C21 and C22 species, while micro-Raman spectroscopy and electron diffraction from selected particles together with first principle density-functional calculations, indicate a cubic solid with dodecahedral C20 cages as building blocks. Unlike solid C60 and fully protonated C20, which are bound by van der Waals forces, the proposed structure is stabilized by linking of the C20 dodecahedra with bridging carbon atoms at interstitial tetrahedral sites to form a face-centered-cubic lattice with 22 carbon atoms per unit cell. Novel highly c-oriented tungsten-doped zinc oxide (WZO) thin films with 1 wt% were grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on corning 1737F glass substrate. The effects of laser energy on the structural, morphological as well as optical transmission properties of the films were studied. The films were highly transparent with average transmittance exceeding 87% in the wavelength region lying between 400 and 2500 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) results indicated that the WZO films had c-axis preferred orientation with wurtzite structure. Film thickness and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the (0 0 2) peaks of the films were found to be dependent on laser fluence. The composition determined through Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) appeared to be independent of the laser fluence. By assuming a direct band gap transition, the band gap values of 3.36, 3.34 and 3.31 eV were obtained for corresponding laser fluence of 1, 1.7 and 2.7 J cm−2, respectively. Compared with the reported undoped ZnO band gap value of 3.37 eV, it is conjectured that the observed low band gap values obtained in this study may be attributable to tungsten incorporation in the films as well as the increase in laser fluence. The high transparency makes the films useful as optical windows while the high band gap values support the idea that the films could be good candidates for optoelectronic applications.  相似文献

We studied the temperature dependence of internal friction of variety of amorphous diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed-laser deposition. Like the most of amorphous solids, the internal friction below 10 K exhibits a temperature independent plateau, which is caused by the atomic tunnelling states—a measure of structure disorder. In this work, we have varied the concentration of sp3 versus sp2 carbon atoms by increasing laser fluence from 1.5 to 30 J/cm2. Our results show that the internal friction has a nonmonotonic dependence on sp3/sp2 ratio with the values of the internal friction plateaus varying between 6×10−5 and 1.1×10−4. We explain our findings as a result of a possible competition between the increase of atomic bonding and the increase of internal strain in the films, both of which are important in determining the tunneling states in amorphous solids. The importance of the internal strain in diamond-like carbon films is consistent with our previous study on laser fluence, doping, and annealing, which we will review as well. In contrast, no significant dependence of laser fluence is found in shear moduli of the films, which vary between 220 and 250 GPa.  相似文献

There are higher technical requirements for protecting layer of magnetic heads and disks used in future high-density storage fields. In this paper, ultra-thin (2 nm thickness) tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films were firstly prepared by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) method, then a series of nitriding treatments were performed with nitrogen plasma generated using electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) microwave source. Here it highlighted the influence of nitrogen flow and applied substrate bias voltage on the structural characteristics of ta-C films during the plasma nitriding process. The chemical compositions, element depth distribution profiles, physical structures and bonding configurations of plasma-nitrided ta-C films were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and UV-vis Raman spectroscopy. The experimental results show that the carbon nitride compounds (CNx) are formed in nitrogenated ta-C films in which the N content and its depth distribution depends on bias voltage to large extent rather than N2 flow. The N content of nitrogenated ta-C films can reach 16 at.% for a substrate bias of −300 V and a N2 flow of 90 sccm. With increasing nitrogen content, there is less G peak dispersion and more ordering of structure. Furthermore, appropriate nitriding treatment (substrate bias: −100 V, N2 flow: 150 sccm) can greatly increase the fraction of sp3 and sp3C-N bonds, but the values begin to fall when the N content is above 9.8 at.%. All these indicate that suitable ECR-assisted microwave plasma nitriding is a potential modification method to obtain ultra-thin ta-C films with higher sp3 and sp3C-N fractions for high-density magnetic storage applications.  相似文献
