Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene/multi-wall carbon nanotube (UHMW-PE/MWNT) composites have been prepared by a novel approach which involves the use of a mixture of solvents during the gelation process. By combining one of the best known organic solvents for nanotubes, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with xylene and use this mixed-solvent in the gelation/crystallisation process for UHMW-PE/MWNT composite fabrication, an attempt is made to improve the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in UHMW-PE. The obtained films were drawn to obtain highly oriented tapes, which were characterized in terms of electrical and mechanical properties. The conductivity of the drawn tapes is maintained at 10−4 S/m at draw ratio 30, two orders of magnitude higher than the minimum level required to provide electrostatic discharge. Although the mechanical properties are compromised by use of DMF and MWNTs, the Young’s modulus still remains at 25 GPa, in comparison with 35 GPa for pure UHMW-PE tape at draw ratio 30.  相似文献

The crystal orientation of solid-state biaxially drawn solution-crystallized ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) film has been revealed from flat-plate wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) patterns and interpreted in terms of crystal plasticity. A slightly drawn film (λ ≤ 3 × 3) possesses only a (100) planar orientation, whereas in a highly drawn film (λ ≥ 6 × 6), a mixed (100) and {110} planar orientation is present. Crystal deformation is found to proceed both by slip on (100) and {110} planes, resulting in a (100) texture in a similar way to crystal deformation in uniaxially drawn polyethylene and by {110} 〈110 〉 transverse slip and/or {310} twinning which results in a {110} texture. It is postulated that during transverse slip or twinning, the molecules deform without chain extension. As a consequence, neither the molecular draw ratio nor the tensile properties change significantly for macroscopic draw ratios above 10 in contrast to the data obtained for uniaxially drawn polyethylene.  相似文献

The melting behavior of drawn, compression-molded isotactic polypropylene has been ex-amined in terms of the infuence of drawing conditions on the observed properties. Two endothermic peaks were observed on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for samples when high draw ratios and high heating rates were used during DSC tests. The peak at lower temperature is influenced by draw ratio, temperature, and rate, and exhibits a strong superheating effect. The species associated with this peak can partially recrystallize into another species associated with the peak at higher temprature during DSC measurements. The position of the peak at higher temperature depends only on draw ratio. It is proposed that the doubel-melting peaks at lower and higher temperature result from extremely thin quasi-amorphous or crystalline layers between microfibrils and the lamellar crystals within microfibrils, repectively. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water‐transport properties of a uniaxially oriented aliphatic polyketone were determined. The polyketone was drawn to 5–10 times its original length. The transport properties were related to changes in crystallinity estimated by differential scanning calorimetry and density measurements and by changes in the molecular and crystal orientation assessed by, respectively, infrared and X‐ray spectroscopy. The film structures were characterized by confocal scanning laser microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Stress‐strain tests on the drawn specimens enabled the impacts of orientation on the transport and mechanical properties to be compared. A draw‐induced increase in crystallinity and molecular orientation yielded permeabilities at a draw ratio of 10 that were 30–40% of the original value, and the percentage decrease was basically independent of the type of gas/vapor molecule. Also, the diffusivities of oxygen and carbon dioxide decreased by an order of magnitude. The fact that the amorphous permeability was peaking at a draw ratio of about 5 was a consequence of a peak in amorphous solubility, which was very high for oxygen and absent for water. It was suggested that the peak in solubility was mainly caused by the destruction of the polymer hydrogen‐bond network during drawing and crystal reorientation. The impact of structural reorganization within the polymer and presence of surface valleys seemed to have less impact on the mechanical properties than on the transport properties. This suggested that transport data are more sensitive than mechanical data in probing material defects and changes in molecular packing and morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The films composed of poly(L-lactide)(PLLA)/organoclay hybrids (PLACHs) have been prepared via a melt-compounding process, in which the organoclay paticles are uniformly dispersed in the PLLA matrix. The changes in PLLA crystal orientation for the uniaxially drawn films were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. Additionally, temperature dependence of the mechanical properties for these drawn films were examined by a dynamic viscoelastometer. After drawing the quenched PLACHs film at 90 °C, the orientation and crystallinity of PLLA crystal increased rapidly with increasing drawing ratio (λ) in the range more than 3 times. At the higher λ, the organoclay platelet particles in the PLACHs became parallel to the draw direction. The mechanical properties of drawn PLACHs were strongly dependent on both clay concentration and λ.  相似文献

The effect of molecular weight distribution (MWD) on the ultradrawability and mechanical properties of solution-cast films of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) has been investigated using tensile and dynamic mechanical measurements. The MWD has a marked effect on ultradrawability and thus on the ultimate mechanical properties such as the tensile modulus. It is proposed that UHMW-PE with a narrow MWD(N-PE) attains the ultimate structure at a lower draw ratio than UHMW-PE with a broad MWD(B-PE) because of the existence in the latter of less fully extended intercrystalline tie chains. It is found that, at the same drawing temperature (100°C), N-PE shows a higher modulus than B-PE at draw ratios up to 150 x, which is assumed to be the ultimate value for N-PE.  相似文献

This study presents a novel photothermal drawing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) fibers. The photothermal drawing was carried out using the near infrared laser‐induced photothermal properties of MWCNTs. An uniform fiber surface was obtained from a continuous necking deformation of the undrawn fibers, particularly at a draw ratio of 4 and higher. The breaking stress and modulus of the photothermally drawn PET/MWCNT fibers were significantly enhanced, in comparison to those of hot drawn fibers at the same draw ratio. The enhanced mechanical properties were ascribed to the increased orientation of PET chains and MWCNTs as well as PET crystallinity due to photothermal drawing. In particular, a significantly higher degree of orientation of the MWCNTs along the fiber axis was obtained from photothermal drawing, as shown in polarized Raman spectra measurements. The dielectric permittivity and loss of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) cured with greater than and less than the stoichiometric amounts of diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) have been measured over a temperature range 77–350 K prior to curing and gelation, after curing at about 340 K and further aging for a predetermined period. The height of the γ-relaxation peak monotonically decreases during the post-cure period and becomes masked by the contributions from the β-relaxation peak, whose height, in turn, first increases on postcuring to a same maximum value for both nonstoichiometric thermosets and then decreases. This decrease is attributed to physical aging effects. The β-relaxation peak shifts towards higher temperature on postcuring. Comparison between the changes in the dielectric properties of the saturated and starved thermosets show that while the γ-relaxation process may be attributed to the motion of the epoxide dipolar groups of the unreacted DGEBA, the β-relaxation process is not attributable entirely to the motion of ? OH groups and of the unreacted amines in the thermoset. Explanations involving the chain and network packing in the structure of a thermoset are necessary for the observed behavior of the β-relaxation process in amine saturated and starved thermosets.  相似文献

Ultradrawing of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) films produced by gelation/crystallization from solution was investigated using thermoluminescence (TL), DSC, and pulsed NMR. The TL from an x-irradiated UHMW-PE gel film is considerably affected by ultradrawing. The TL glow peak is correlated with the αc dispersion of the crystalline phase in the UHMW-PE gel film. The TL integrated intensity is weak for folded-chain crystals but strong for extended-chain crystals. An extra higher TL peak, observed for samples drawn 150x, is related to the appearance of some highly extended tie-chains in the interfacial region in the process of ultradrawing. On the basis of the above observations, the effects of molecular weight distribution on the morphology of UHMW-PE gel film are examined. It is concluded that B-PE (Broad MWD) having a broader MWD has better drawability than N-PE; but at a given draw ratio, higher modulus and tensile strength are realized for N-PE (Narrow MWD).  相似文献

Relative amounts of surface crystallinity and amorphous structure and their respective surface orientations were examined as a function of depth from the surface for a series of uniaxially drawn poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) films using polarized attenuated total-reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). Qualitative depth resolution on a scale from ca. 0.5 to 5 μm is obtained. The results indicate a higher degree of extended trans segments and a higher degree of extended trans orientation near the surface in the machine direction, relative to the bulk film. These quantities also increase with increasing uniaxial draw ratio. No evidence for orientation of the gauche conformer at the surface as a function of uniaxial draw ratio is observed. All conclusions are consistent with the presence of increased crystallinity at the surface of the films. Increases in trans structure and orientation measured by ATR-IR measurements are consistent with bulk crystallinity measurements from density and x-ray scattering measurements.  相似文献
