Viscous flow in a circular cylindrical tube containing an infinite line of rigid spheroidal particles equally spaced along the axis of the tube is considered for (a) uniform axial translation of the spheroids (b) flow past a line of stationary spheriods and (c) flow of the suspending fluid and spheroids under an imposed pressure gradient. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and Newtonian. The Reynolds number is assumed to be small and the equations of creeping flow are used. Two types of solutions are developed: (i) an exact solution in the form of an infinite series which is valid for ratios of the spheroid diameter to the tube diameter up to 0.80, (ii) an approximate solution using lubrication theory which is valid for spheroids which nearly fill the tube. The drag on each spheroid and the pressure drop are computed for all cases. Both prolate and oblate spheroids are considered. The results show that the drag and pressure drop depend on the spheroidal diameter perpendicular to the axis of tube primarily and the effects of the spheroidal thickness and spacing are secondary. The results are of interest in connection with mechanics of capillary blood flow, sedimentation, fluidized beds, and fluid-solid transport.  相似文献

In this study, a Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model combined with the kinetic theory of granular flow is adopted to simulate power-law fluid–solid two-phase flow in the fluidized bed. Two new power-law liquid–solid drag models are proposed based on the rheological equation of power-law fluid and pressure drop. One called model A is a modified drag model considering tortuosity of flow channel and ratio of the throat to pore, and the other called model B is a blending drag model combining drag coefficients of high and low particle concentrations. Predictions are compared with experimental data measured by Lali et al., where the computed porosities from model B are closer to the measured data than other models. Furthermore, the predicted pressure drop rises as liquid velocity increases, while it decreases with the increase of particle size. Simulation results indicate that the increases of consistency coefficient and flow behavior index lead to the decrease of drag coefficient, and particle concentration, granular temperature, granular pressure, and granular viscosity go down accordingly.  相似文献

The results of detailed, three-dimensional numerical simulations of fixed spherical drops in a uniform flow are presented. The fluid dynamics outside and inside of the drops as well as the internal problem of mass (or heat) transfer are studied. Liquid drops in both a liquid and a gaseous ambient phase are considered. Special emphasis is put on the investigation of different modes of internal circulation. At low Reynolds numbers of the inner fluid, the flow field inside the drop resembles the well known Hill’s vortex solution. However, at higher internal Reynolds numbers, stable steady or quasi-steady alternative modes of internal circulation are found. As these modes are not cylindrical symmetric around the streamwise axis, the often applied assumption of a two-dimensional, axisymmetric flow field is not justified in these cases. Thus, major discrepancies to previous numerical studies are obtained. However, it is shown that experimental results support our findings. For liquid drops surrounded by a liquid, a major influence of the state of internal circulation on the drag is discovered, whereas the drag is nearly unaltered in the case of a liquid drop in gas.Concerning the internal problem of mass/heat transfer, the various internal flow modes show different characteristics. At low internal Peclet numbers, higher Sherwood numbers are reached for the Hill’s vortex-like cases, whereas at higher Peclet numbers, the transfer is faster for the alternative modes. For cases with a Hill’s vortex-like solution, asymptotic Sherwood numbers for very high Peclet numbers of around 20 are found, whereas no upper limit for cases with alternative modes can be determined. In the present study a maximum internal Sherwood number of 130 is reached, more than six times the maximum value for a case with a Hill’s vortex-like internal solution.  相似文献

The effect of an externally imposed axial temperature gradient on the mobility and deformation of a drop in an otherwise stagnant liquid within an insulated cylindrical tube is investigated. In the absence of bulk transport of momentum and energy, the boundary integral technique is used to obtain the flow and temperature fields inside and outside the deformable drop. The steady drop shapes and the corresponding migration velocities are examined over a wide range of the dimensionless parameters. The steady drop shape is nearly spherical for dimensionless drop sizes <0.5, but becomes slightly elongated in the axial direction for drop sizes comparable to tube diameter. The adverse effect of drop deformation on the effective temperature gradient driving the motion is slightly more pronounced than its favorable effect of reducing drag, thereby leading to a slight reduction in drop mobility with increasing drop deformation. Increasing the viscosity ratio reduces drop deformation and leads to a slight enhancement in the relative mobility (with respect to free thermocapillary motion) of confined drops. When the drop fluid has a lower thermal conductivity than the exterior phase, the presence of the thermally-insulating wall increases the thermal driving force for drop motion (compared to that for the same drop in unbounded domain) by causing more pronounced bending of the isotherms toward the drop. However, the favorable thermal effect of the confining wall is overwhelmed by its retarding hydrodynamic effect, causing the confined drop to always move slower than its unbounded counterpart regardless of the value of the thermal conductivity ratio.  相似文献

Liquid plug propagation and rupture occurring in lung airways can have a detrimental effect on epithelial cells. In this study, a numerical simulation of a liquid plug in an infinite tube is conducted using an Eulerian–Lagrangian approach and the continuous interface method. A reconstruction scheme is developed to allow topological changes during plug rupture by altering the connectivity information about the interface mesh. Results prior to the rupture are in reasonable agreement with the study of Fujioka et al. in which a Lagrangian method is used. For unity non‐dimensional pressure drop and a Laplace number of 1000, rupture time is shown to be delayed as the initial precursor film thickness increases and rupture is not expected for thicknesses larger than 0.10 of tube radius. During the plug rupture process, a sudden increase of mechanical stresses on the tube wall is recorded, which can cause tissue damage. The peak values of those stresses increase as the initial precursor film thickness is reduced. After rupture, the peaks in mechanical stresses decrease in magnitude as the plug vanishes and the flow approaches a fully developed behavior. Increasing initial pressure drop is shown to linearly increase maximum variations in wall pressure and shear stress. Decreasing the pressure drop and increasing the Laplace number appear to delay rupture because it takes longer for a fluid with large inertial forces to respond to the small pressure drop. A study is made of the development of the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid from the state of rest in a circular cylindrical tube with constant pressure gradient. The tangential frictional stress at an arbitrary point of the flow is found as a function of the pressure gradient and the ratio of the values, averaged over the flow, of the accelerations corresponding to the considered time and the initial time. An analysis is made of the exact solution of the linear equation [1], which shows that the development of the drag forces in the case of viscous flow is determined by a characteristic time which depends on the kinematic viscosity and the tube radius. The value of the hydraulic friction drag coefficient for the unsteady flow is determined more accurately by introducing a correction that takes into account the velocity profile of the flow. The equations of motion are analyzed, and six different cases of development of the flow are described for the characteristic values of the dimensionless numbers. These cases determine the methods of calculation of one-dimensional problems. This question has not been fully clarified in earlier work [2, 3].  相似文献

Variation of the drag coefficient of closely spaced drops in a stream injected into a turbulent flow is studied experimentally. Three different regions are identified. In the first region, close to the injector, drops flow in the wake of each other. The drag coefficient in this region is much smaller (by a factor of 4 to 5) than the standard drag coefficient, and its magnitude is dependent on the drop initial spacing. Shortly downstream of the injection point, the transition region starts, where the drag coefficient increases rapidly approaching the drag coefficient of a single isolated drop. And further down-stream when drops are dispersed significantly, the drag coefficient will behave the same way as a single isolated drop.  相似文献

Using a quadratic optimisation process to satisfy the boundary conditions, the drag coefficient and the flow patterns inside and outside a fluid drop translating axially in a tube have been determined accurately even when the drop is clearly elongated. Convincing comparisons with experimental results (flow visualizations, velocity and drag measurements) are presented. The effects of the viscosity and density ratios are examined.  相似文献

The primary difficulty in solving the problem of mass transport through an isolated drop (or bubble) moving in a fluid medium at high Reynolds numbers lies in the extreme complexity of the hydrodynamic pattern of the phenomenon. For sufficiently high velocities a separation of the external flow will occur in the rear portion of the drops and bubbles, which leads to the appearance of a turbulent wake and a sharp increase of the hydrodynamic resistance. Beginning with those dimensions for which the resistance force acting per unit surface of the drop or bubble from the external medium becomes greater than the capillary pressure, the surface of the drops and bubbles begins to deform and pulsate. The local variations of the surface tension, resulting either from the process of convective diffusion or from adsorption of surface-active substances, have a large effect on the hydrodynamics of drops and bubbles (particularly on the deformation of their surface) [1, 2], The presence of vortical, and possibly even turbulent, motion within the drops and bubbles may, under certain conditions [1], lead to their fractionation.Naturally, at the present time such complex hydrodynamics cannot be described by exact quantitative relations. Several authors have attempted to solve this problem approximately within the framework of certain assumptions. In particular [3–6], a theory was developed for the boundary layer on the surface of spherical and ellipsoidal gaseous bubbles moving in a liquid, studies were made [7, 8] of the hydrodynamics of drops located in a gas flow and the conditions were found for which fractionation of such drops takes place. Of considerable practical interest is the development of the theory of mass transfer in pulsating drops and bubbles and finding in explicit form the dependence of the mass transfer coefficients on the hydrodynamic characteristics of these systems. Until this relationship is established, every theory which ignores the effect of hydrodynamics on the mass transfer rate from an individual drop or bubble cannot be considered in any way well-founded. This relates particularly to the theories [9, 10] which consider mass transfer in systems with concentrated streams of drops and bubbles. The present paper is devoted to the study of mass transport through the surface of an isolated drop in an irrotational gas or liquid stream for large Peclet numbers P.In conclusion the authors wish to thank V. G. Levich for his helpful discussions.  相似文献

For a theoretical derivation of bubble coalescence conditions, nonlinear forced oscillations of two closely spaced spherical bubbles subjected to the action of a periodic external pressure field are considered. The equations, asymptotic with respect to a small distance between the bubble surfaces, are derived to describe the approach of the bubbles under the action of (i) the Bjerknes attraction force averaged over the oscillation period and (ii) the viscous drag. It is shown that due to nonlinear interaction of the viscous drag with the radial and translational oscillations of the bubbles a unidirectional repulsive force is generated, which prevents the approach of the bubbles. The coalescence of the bubbles is possible when the nondimensional parameter combined from the amplitude and frequency of the external pressure field, the bubble radius, and the fluid viscosity is greater than a certain critical value. The obtained coalescence condition is qualitatively confirmed by experiments.  相似文献

The role of incident shock waves in the initiation of vapor explosions in volatile liquid hydrocarbons has been investigated. Experiments were carried out on single droplets (1–2 mm diameter) immersed in a host fluid and heated to temperatures at or near the limit of superheat. Shocks generated by spark discharge were directed at previously nonevaporating drops as well as at drops boiling stably at high pressure. Explosive boiling is triggered in previously nonevaporating drops only if the drop temperature is above a threshold temperature that is near the superheat limit. Interaction of a shock with a stably boiling drop immediately causes a transition to violent unstable boiling in which fine droplets are torn from the evaporating interface, generating a two-phase flow downstream. On the previously nonevaporating interface between the drop and the host liquid, multiple nucleation sites appear which grow rapidly and coalesce. Overpressures generated in the surrounding fluid during bubble collapse may reach values on the same level as the pressure jump across the shock wave that initiated the explosive boiling. A simple calculation is given, which suggests that shock focusing may influence the location at which unstable boiling is initiated.  相似文献

An experimental study of the interaction and coalescence of viscous drops moving through a cylindrical capillary tube under low Reynolds number conditions is presented. The combined pressure- and buoyancy-driven motion of drops in a Newtonian continuous phase is examined. The interaction between two drops is quantified using image analysis, and measurements of the coalescence time are reported for various drop size ratios, Bond numbers, and viscosity ratios. The time scale for coalescence in the non-axisymmetric configuration is found to be substantially larger than that for coalescence in the axisymmetric configuration. Measurements of the radius of the liquid film formed between the two drops at the instant of apparent contact are used in conjunction with a planar film drainage model to predict the dependence of the coalescence time on drop size ratio for coalescence of low viscosity-ratio drops in the axisymmetric configuration.  相似文献

The coalescence of two identical viscous-liquid drops in weightlessness under the action of surface tension is considered. Inside the drops, the flow is described by the Navier-Stokes and Poisson (for the pressure) equations. On the liquid free surface in contact with the medium at rest, the dynamic and kinematic conditions are used. The problem is solved by a finite-difference method. The coalescence of the drops and the subsequent oscillations of the resultant drop are investigated. The results are compared with the known data.  相似文献

The results of an investigation of the dynamics of hard particles and liquid drops in the flow behind a transmitted shock wave are presented. From the equation of motion of a particle in the shock wave, relations for the displacement, velocity and acceleration as functions of time and certain velocity-relaxation parameters taking into account the properties of the gas and the aerodynamic drag of the particles are obtained for unsteady flow around the particles at an acceleration of 103–104 m/s2. It is shown that the velocity-relaxation parameters are universal. Approaches to finding the aerodynamic drag of freely-accelerating bodies from the dynamics of their acceleration after being suddenly exposed to the flow are considered. It is established that under these conditions the drop dynamics observed can be well described in terms of the same velocity-relaxation parameters with account for linear growth of the transverse drop size. All the kinematic functions obtained are confirmed experimentally.  相似文献

A theoretical method is given for the determination of the shape of two drops (bubbles) moving with constant velocities parallel to their line of centres in a quiescent viscous fluid. The Reynolds numbers for the motions within the fluids are assumed to be sufficiently small that the equations governing these motions are quasisteady Stokes' equations. It is also assumed that the maximum deviation of the interfaces from spherical form is small when compared with the radius of the “equivalent” spherical drop. The paper deduces the first-order pressure distribution exterior and interior to the droplets. Effects of fluid viscosities, capillary numbers and distances between the droplets are taken into account. Special attention is paid to the influence of a solid plane or solid sphere on the shape of a drop (bubble) approaching or receding away from the solid boundary. The obtained solutions may serve as a first iteration of an iterative procedure for determining more accurate flow fields, taking into account the deviation from sphericity of the deformed particles.  相似文献

Numerical solutions are presented for the flow past a sphere placed at the centreline of a cylindrical tube for Reynolds numbers ranging from 0 to 150, using a boundary element method. Fluids are modelled by a variety of constitutive equations including the Newtonian, the Carreau and the Phan-Thien-Tanner models. The influence of inertia, shear-thinning and fluid elasticity on the flow field, drag and the pressure drop force-drag ratio is examined. Some results are compared with available experimental data.  相似文献

The theoretical flow models of homogeneous and separated flow are applied to in-tube condensation to predict the pressure drop characteristics of R134a. The homogeneous flow model is modified by ten different dynamic viscosity correlations and various alternative correlations of total, frictional and momentum pressure drops to take account of the partial condensation inside the tube. Numerical analyses were performed to determine the average and local homogeneous wall shear stresses and friction factors by means of a CFD program. The equivalent Reynolds number model is modified by six different two-phase friction factors to determine the total condensation pressure drop in the separated flow model. The refrigerant side total pressure drops, frictional pressure drops, friction factors and wall shear stresses are determined within a ±30% error band. The importance of using the alternative total, momentum and frictional pressure drop correlations for the homogeneous flow model is also shown.  相似文献
