(APD)-property of -algebras by extensions of -algebras with (APD)

A unital -algebra is said to have the (APD)-property if every nonzero element in has the approximate polar decomposition. Let be a closed ideal of . Suppose that and have (APD). In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that makes have (APD). Furthermore, we show that if and or is a simple purely infinite -algebra, then has (APD).

     

Wreath products and Kaluzhnin-Krasner embedding for Lie algebras

The wreath product of groups is one of basic constructions in group theory. We construct its analogue, a wreath product of Lie algebras.

Consider Lie algebras and over a field . Let be the universal enveloping algebra. Then has the natural structure of a Lie algebra, where the multiplication is defined via the comultiplication in . Also, acts by derivations on via the (left) coregular action. The semidirect sum we call the wreath product and denote by . As a main result, we prove that an arbitrary extension of Lie algebras can be embedded into the wreath product .

     

Hilbert-Samuel functions of modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings

For a finitely generated, non-free module over a CM local ring , it is proved that for the length of is given by a polynomial of degree . The vanishing of is studied, with a view towards answering the question: If there exists a finitely generated -module with such that the projective dimension or the injective dimension of is finite, then is regular? Upper bounds are provided for beyond which the question has an affirmative answer.

     

Realizability of the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for formal -modules

We show that the formal -module Adams-Novikov spectral sequence of Ravenel does not naturally arise from a filtration on a map of spectra by examining the case . We also prove that when is the ring of integers in a nontrivial extension of , the map of Hopf algebroids, classifying formal groups and formal -modules respectively, does not arise from compatible maps of -ring spectra .

     

Factorization formulae on counting zeros of diagonal equations over finite fields

Let be the number of solutions of the equation over the finite field , and let be the number of solutions of the equation . If , let be the least integer represented by . and play important roles in estimating . Based on a partition of , we obtain the factorizations of and , respectively. All these factorizations can simplify the corresponding calculations in most cases or give the explicit formulae for in some special cases.

We will give some sufficient conditions for a -hyponormal operator, , to be normal, and a sufficient condition for a triplet of operators , , with , self-adjoint and unitary such that necessarily satisfies .

Let be a finite group, and write for the set of degrees of irreducible characters of . We define to be the graph whose vertex set is , and there is an edge between and if . We prove that if is a complete graph, then is a solvable group.

     

Holes in the spectrum of functions generating affine systems

Given a expansive dilation matrix , a measurable set is called a -dilation generator of if is tiled (modulo null sets) by the collection . Our main goal in this paper is to prove certain results relating the support of the Fourier transform of functions generating a wavelet or orthonormal affine system associated with the dilation to an arbitrary set which is a -dilation generator of .

     

Infinite dimensional universal subspaces generated by Blaschke products

Let be the Banach algebra of all bounded analytic functions in the unit disk . A function is said to be universal with respect to the sequence of noneuclidian translates, if the set is locally uniformly dense in the set of all holomorphic functions bounded by . We show that for any sequence of points in tending to the boundary there exists a closed subspace of , topologically generated by Blaschke products, and linear isometric to , such that all of its elements are universal with respect to noneuclidian translates. The proof is based on certain interpolation problems in the corona of . Results on cyclicity of composition operators in are deduced.

     

On frames for countably generated Hilbert -modules

Let be a countably generated Hilbert -module over a -algebra We prove that a sequence is a standard frame for if and only if the sum converges in norm for every and if there are constants such that for every We also prove that surjective adjointable operators preserve standard frames. A class of frames for countably generated Hilbert -modules over the -algebra of all compact operators on some Hilbert space is discussed.

     

On the finiteness properties of extension and torsion functors of local cohomology modules

Let be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity, and ideals of with , and a finitely generated -module. In this paper, for fixed integers and , we study the finiteness of and in several cases.

     

Middle points, medians and inner products

Let be a real normed space with unit sphere . Gurari and Sozonov proved that is an inner product space if and only if, for any , . We prove that it suffices to consider points such that .

Making use of the above result we also prove that if , is smooth, and 0 is a Fermat-Torricelli median of any three points such that , then is an inner product space.

Sharp Marchaud and converse inequalities in Orlicz spaces

For spaces on , and , sharp versions of the classical Marchaud inequality are known. These results are extended here to Orlicz spaces (on , and ) for which is convex for some , , where is the Orlicz function. Sharp converse inequalities for such spaces are deduced.

     

Galois groups via Atkin-Lehner twists

Using Serre's proposed complement to Shih's Theorem, we obtain as a Galois group over for at least new primes . Assuming that rational elliptic curves with odd analytic rank have positive rank, we obtain Galois realizations for of the primes that were not covered by previous results; it would also suffice to assume a certain (plausible, and perhaps tractable) conjecture concerning class numbers of quadratic fields. The key issue is to understand rational points on Atkin-Lehner twists of . In an appendix, we explore the existence of local points on these curves.

     

Root closed function algebras on compacta of large dimension

Let be a Hausdorff compact space and let be the algebra of all continuous complex-valued functions on , endowed with the supremum norm. We say that is (approximately) -th root closed if any function from is (approximately) equal to the -th power of another function. We characterize the approximate -th root closedness of in terms of -divisibility of the first Cech cohomology groups of closed subsets of . Next, for each positive integer we construct an -dimensional metrizable compactum such that is approximately -th root closed for any . Also, for each positive integer we construct an -dimensional compact Hausdorff space such that is -th root closed for any .

     

A Schottky-type theorem for starlike domains in Banach spaces

We show that if is a starlike domain in a Banach space and is a family of holomorphic functions on that omit two distinct values and is bounded at the origin, then is uniformly bounded on each -bounded set.

     

-boundedness for the Hilbert transform and maximal operator along a class of nonconvex curves

Some sufficient conditions on a real polynomial and a convex function are given in order for the Hilbert transform and maximal operator along to be bounded on , for all in , with bounds independent of the coefficients of . The same conclusion is shown to hold for the corresponding hypersurface in under weaker hypotheses on .

     

Prevalence of odometers in cellular automata

We consider left permutive cellular automata  with no memory and positive anticipation, defined on the space of all doubly infinite sequences with entries from a finite alphabet. For each such automaton that is not one-to-one, there is a dense set of points  such that is topologically conjugate to an odometer, the ``' map on the countable product of finite cyclic groups. This set is a dense subset of an appropriate subspace. We identify the odometer in several cases.
