A new facility for time-resolved PIV measurements in rotating channels   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A new facility to measure the time evolution of 2D velocity fields in a rotating channel is presented, and the accuracy is discussed in detail. Measurements are made by means of a time-resolved PIV system composed of a continuous laser diode, coupled by a fiber optics cable to a laser plane optical module, and a CMOS high-speed camera. Both the PIV system and divergent channel are fixed on a 2.5 m rotating disk. This allows a direct measurement of the relative velocity of flows with Reynolds numbers between 3 × 103 and 3 × 104 and Rotation numbers between 0.0 and 0.52. These values correspond to the flow conditions in small radial impellers and can be independently adjusted by a change of the relative flow velocity and RPM. It is shown that this new facility allows high signal-to-noise ratios, and that the direct acquisition of the data in a rotating frame drastically reduces the measurement error. The accuracy and high spatial and temporal resolution of the measurements allow a detailed analysis of boundary layer characteristics in stationary and rotating conditions.  相似文献

A radial barrier has been mounted in a differentially heated rotating annulus that partially blocks the azimuthal flow component. The experiment can be seen as an analog to geophysical flows with constrictions, e.g., the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. However, the experiment has been carried out without a particular natural flow in mind. The main interest was to observe a baroclinic annulus flow that does not become saturated. Hence, in contrast to the annulus flow without a barrier, the partially blocked flow remains transient and surface heat fluxes associated with baroclinic life cycles can be studied. The annulus can be subdivided into the upstream half of the barrier, where waves amplify, and the downstream half of the barrier, where waves decay. In the upstream half, the azimuthal mean flow is moderate but with a significant positive eddy radial heat flux. In the downstream half, we find a strong jet in the mean azimuthal flow and furthermore an increased radial mean temperature gradient. The latter points to a weakened or even reversed radial eddy heat flux in the lee side of the barrier. Temperature anomalies appear as large bulges in the outer part of the annulus. Moreover, an outward shift of vortex centers can be observed with respect to centers of temperature anomalies. This phase shift between pressure and temperature anomalies differs from that of classical Eady modes of baroclinic instability.  相似文献

The flow in a streamwise/wall-normal plane of a turbulent boundary layer at moderate Reynolds number (Re θ = 2,200) is characterized using two stereo PIV systems just overlapping in the streamwise direction. The aim is to generate SPIV data for near-wall turbulence with enough spatial dynamic range to resolve most of the coherent structures present in the flow and to facilitate future comparisons with direct numerical simulations. This is made possibly through the use of four cameras with large CCD arrays (4,008 px × 2,672 px) and through a rigorous experimental procedure designed to minimize the impact of measurement noise on the resolution of the small scales. For the first time, both a large field of view [S x ; S y ] = [2.6δ; 0.75δ] and a high spatial resolution (with an interrogation window size of 13.6+) have been achieved. The quality of the data is assessed through an analysis of some of the statistical results such as the mean velocity profile, the rms and the PDF of the fluctuations, and the power spectra.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis of the two-dimensional velocity shift by the use of a rotating mirror in PIV flow field measurements has been carried out by the application of ray optics. The velocity shift has been calculated directly in the flow field co-ordinates. In dimensionless form the results are also available in the image plane. It is shown that the distribution of the velocity shift over the entire observation field may not usually be assumed to be uniform (and may vary by up to 20%). The effect of the layout and arrangement of the rotating mirror on the velocity shift and its distribution has been analysed. In addition, the sensitivity of the velocity shift to the design tolerances and imperfections of the rotating mirror is given.  相似文献

PIV measurements of a microchannel flow   总被引:24,自引:0,他引:24
A particle image velocimetry (PIV) system has been developed to measure velocity fields with order 1-μm spatial resolution. The technique uses 200 nm diameter flow-tracing particles, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, an inverted epi-fluorescent microscope, and a cooled interline-transfer CCD camera to record high-resolution particle-image fields. The spatial resolution of the PIV technique is limited primarily by the diffraction-limited resolution of the recording optics. The accuracy of the PIV system was demonstrated by measuring the known flow field in a 30 μm×300 μm (nominal dimension) microchannel. The resulting velocity fields have a spatial resolution, defined by the size of the first window of the interrogation spot and out of plane resolution of 13.6 μm× 0.9 μm×1.8 μm, in the streamwise, wall-normal, and out of plane directions, respectively. By overlapping the interrogation spots by 50% to satisfy the Nyquist sampling criterion, a velocity-vector spacing of 450 nm in the wall-normal direction is achieved. These measurements are accurate to within 2% full-scale resolution, and are the highest spatially resolved PIV measurements published to date. Summary An experiment is described in which a laser-Doppler anemometer was used to measure the spatial decay of turbulence generated by a vertically oscillating grid. In addition to being of theoretical interest, these measurements are necessary for scaling results from mixed-layer entrainment experiments. The main result of the present experiments is the determination of the variation of the length and velocity scales of the grid-induced motion as a function of distance from the grid. The results confirm previous reports that the turbulent kinetic energy (actually, the mean square fluctuating velocity) decreases approximately with the inverse square of the distance from the grid. Power spectra are calculated for the velocity signal and these, along with the raw data, are used to analyze the development of fluid motion with increasing distance from the grid. It is shown that true turbulence is not obtained for depths less than about two mesh spacings from the grid. Problems with background noise in the laser signal are also discussed.

Tomographic PIV measurements in a turbulent lifted jet flame   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Measurements of instantaneous volumetric flow fields are required for an improved understanding of turbulent flames. In non-reacting flows, tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV) is an established method for three-dimensional (3D) flow measurements. In flames, the reconstruction of the particles location becomes challenging due to a locally varying index of refraction causing beam-steering. This work presents TPIV measurements within a turbulent lifted non-premixed methane jet flame. Solid seeding particles were used to provide the 3D flow field in the vicinity of the flame base, including unburned and burned regions. Four cameras were arranged in a horizontal plane around the jet flame. Following an iterative volumetric self-calibration procedure, the remaining disparity caused by the flame was less than 0.2 pixels. Comparisons with conventional two-component PIV in terms of mean and rms values provided additional confidence in the TPIV measurements.  相似文献

Endoscopic PIV measurements in a low pressure turbine rig   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Particle-Image-Velocimetry (PIV) is a useful way to acquire information about the flow in turbomachinery. Several premises have to be fulfilled to achieve high-quality data, for example, optical access, low vibrations and low reflections. However, not all test facilities comply with these requirements. If there is no optical access to the test area, measurements cannot be performed. The use of borescopic optics is a possible solution to this issue, as the access required is very small. Several different techniques can be used to measure the three components of the velocity vector, one of which is Stereo-PIV. These techniques require either large optical access from several viewing angles or highly complex setups. Orthogonal light sheet orientations in combination with borescopic optics using Planar-PIV can deliver sufficient information about the flow. This study will show the feasibility of such an approach in an enclosed test area, such as the interblade space in a Low-Pressure-Turbine-Rig. The results from PIV will be compared with data collected with conventional techniques, such as the Five-Hole-Probe and the 2-component Hot-Wire-Anemometry. An analysis of time- and phase-averaged data will be performed.  相似文献

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to measure the instantaneous velocity distribution under nonbreaking and breaking water waves. The corresponding turbulence intensity was calculated by the ensemble average of repeated measurements. The pseudo turbulence found was large enough to affect the accuracy of the turbulence measurements. We follow Prasad et al.'s (1992) approach to demonstrate that the pseudo turbulence is related to the bias error, which is the discrepancy between the true position of the particle image and the position calculated from the pixel array data with inadequate pixel resolution. To reduce the bias error (or the pseudo turbulence), we first calculate it from a turbulence-free flow with the same experimental set-up as that used for the targeted experiments (i.e., we use the same size of field of view, seeding particles, seeding density, lens aperture, and laser wavelength in both experiments). Then we minimize the bias error from the turbulence measurements in the actual experiments. To demonstrate the procedure, the evolution of a breaking wave is investigated. This study investigates the flow past a confined circular cylinder built into a narrow rectangular duct with a Reynolds number range of 1,500 ≤ Re d ≤ 6,150, by employing the particle image velocimetry technique. In order to better explain the 3-D flow behaviour in the juncture regions of the lower and upper plates and the cylinder, respectively, as well as the dynamics of the horseshoe vortex system, both time-averaged and instantaneous flow data are presented for regions upstream and downstream of the cylinder. The size, intensity and interaction of the vortex systems vary substantially with the Reynolds number. Although the narrow rectangular duct with a single built-in cylinder is a geometrically symmetrical arrrangement, instantaneous flow data have revealed that the flow structures in both the lower and upper plate–cylinder junction regions are not symmetrical with respect to the centreline of the flow passage. The vortical flow structures obtained in side-view planes become dominant sometimes in the lower juncture region and sometimes in the upper juncture region in unsteady mode.  相似文献

Scanning PIV is applied to a laminar separation bubble to investigate the spanwise structure and dynamics of the roll-up of vortices within the bubble. The laminar flow separation with turbulent reattachment is studied on the suction side of an airfoil SD7003 at Reynolds numbers of 20,000–60,000. The flow is recorded with a CMOS high-speed camera in successive light-sheet planes over a time span of 1–2 s to resolve the temporal evolution of the flow in the different planes. The results show the quasi-periodic development of large vortex-rolls at the downstream end of the separation bubble, which have a convex structure and an extension of 10–20% chord length in the spanwise direction. These vortices possess an irregular spanwise pattern. The evolution process of an exemplary vortex structure is shown in detail starting from small disturbances within the separation bubble transforming into a compact vortex at the downstream end of the separation bubble. As the vortex grows in size and strength it reaches a critical state that leads to an abrupt burst of the vortex with a large ejection of fluid into the mean flow.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental analysis of the unsteady phenomena developing in a vaneless diffuser of a radial flow pump. Partial flow operating conditions were investigated using 2D/3C high repetition rate PIV, coupled with unsteady pressure transducers. Pressure measurements were acquired on the shroud wall of the vaneless diffuser and on the suction pipe of the pump, whereas PIV flow fields were determined on three different heights in the hub to shroud direction, inside the diffuser. The classical Fourier analysis was applied to both pressure signals to identify the spectral characteristics of the developing instabilities, and the high-order spectral analysis was exploited to investigate possible non-linear interaction mechanisms between different unsteady structures. A dedicated PIV averaging procedure was developed and applied to the PIV flow fields so as to capture and visualize the topology of the spectrally identified phenomena. The influence of these phenomena on the diffuser efficiency was also investigated.  相似文献

Simultaneous velocity and concentration measurements have been performed in a gas-turbine combustor model. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to acquire planar velocity information and to identify coherent flow structures. The Mie scattering technique, based on a slightly modified experimental setup, was used for concentration measurements in this mixing flow. The degree of mixing was assessed by examining local concentration measurements while inhomogeneously seeding the primary and secondary stream of the mixing layer. Connections between flow field and concentration distribution were highlighted using the proper orthogonal decomposition algorithm (POD). Uncertainties and systematic errors for the PIV measurements due to the suboptimal seeding are discussed using a comparison with a second test series at optimal seeding conditions. Results are presented for several flow parameters and at various lateral planes.  相似文献

The three-dimensional flow that develops around a finite flapping wing is investigated using a tomographic scanning PIV technique. The acquisition and correlation processes employed to achieve such measurements have been carefully validated. Issues regarding the relevant timescales of the flow and the spanwise space-resolution are addressed. Results obtained on a hovering flapping wing whose plunging phase is described by a rectilinear motion highlight the influence of the free end condition and the formation of the tip vortex on the leading edge vortices behavior, wing/wake interactions, and wake stabilization.  相似文献

An orthogonal collocation method is used to compute steady flows of viscoelastic fluids in a cylindrical tank covered by a rotating disk. The stability of these flows with respect to small disturbances is also analyzed. The Criminale-Ericksen-Filbey constitutive equation is used, since the primary flow is viscometric and the secondary flow is small. The solutions satisfy the equation of continuity and the boundary conditions exactly, including the velocity discontinuity at the edge of the disk. The computed flows for aqueous solutions of Separan 30 exhibit single or double vortices, according to the concentration and the rotation speed. Reasonable agreement is found with the data of Hill [7,8].  相似文献

PIV measurements of the near-wake behind a sinusoidal cylinder   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The three-dimensional near-wake structures behind a sinusoidal cylinder have been investigated using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement technique at Re=3,000. The mean velocity fields and spatial distributions of ensemble-averaged turbulence statistics for flows around the sinusoidal and corresponding smooth cylinders were compared. The near-wake behind the sinusoidal cylinder exhibited pronounced spanwise periodic variations in the flow structure. Well-organized streamwise vortices with alternating positive and negative vorticity were observed along the span of the sinusoidal cylinder. They suppress the formation of the large-scale spanwise vortices and decrease the overall turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wake of the sinusoidal cylinder. The sinusoidal surface geometry significantly modifies the near-wake structure and strongly controls the three-dimensional vortices formed in the near-wake.  相似文献

The flow characteristics of the propeller wake behind a container ship model with a rotating propeller were investigated using a two-frame PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Ensemble-averaged mean velocity fields were measured at four different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the flow structure in the near-wake region. The mean velocity fields in longitudinal planes show that a velocity deficit is formed in the regions near the blade tips and hub. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. Interaction between the bilge vortices and the incoming flow around the hull causes the flow structure to be asymmetric. Contour plots of the vorticity give information on the radial distribution of the loading on the blades. The radial velocity profiles fluctuate to a greater extent under the heavy (J=0.59) and light loading (J=0.88) conditions than under the design loading condition (J=0.72). The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake develops in the downstream direction, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and the adjacent wake flow.  相似文献

The increasing capabilities of currently available high-speed cameras present several new opportunities for particle image velocimetry (PIV). In particular, temporal postprocessing methods can be used to remove spurious vectors but can also be applied to remove inherent noise. This paper explores this second possibility by estimating the error introduced by several denoising methods on manufactured velocity fields. It is found that PIV noise, while autocorrelated in space, is uncorrelated in time, which leads to a significant improvement in the efficiency of temporal denoising methods compared to their spatial counterparts. Among them, the optimal Wiener filter presents better results than convolution- or wavelet-based filters and has the valuable advantage that no adjustments are required, unlike other methods which generally involve the tuning of some parameters that depend on flow and measurement conditions and are not known a priori. Further refinements show that denoised data can be successfully deconvolved to increase the accuracy of remaining small-scale velocity fluctuations, leading in particular to the recovery of the true shape of turbulent spectra. In practice, the computation of the filter function is not always accurate and different procedures can be used to improve the method depending on the flow considered. Some of them are derived from the properties of the time-frequency spectrum provided by the wavelet transform.  相似文献

A high Reynolds number flat plate turbulent boundary layer was studied in a wind-tunnel experiment using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The flow is subjected to an adverse pressure gradient (APG) which is designed such that the boundary layer separates and reattaches, forming a weak separation bubble. With PIV we are able to get a more complete picture of this complex flow phenomenon. The view of a separation bubble being composed of large scale coherent regions of instantaneous backflow occurring randomly in a three-dimensional manner in space and time is verified by the present PIV measurements. The PIV database was used to test the applicability of various velocity scalings around the separation bubble. We found that the mean velocity profiles in the outer part of the boundary layer, and to some extent also the Reynolds shear-stress, are self-similar when using a velocity scale based on the local pressure gradient. The same can be said for the so called Perry–Schofield scaling, which suggests that the two velocity scales are connected. This can also be interpreted as an experimental evidence of the claimed relation between the latter velocity scale and the maximum Reynolds shear-stress.  相似文献
