In variational data assimilation a least‐squares objective function is minimised to obtain the most likely state of a dynamical system. This objective function combines observation and prior (or background) data weighted by their respective error statistics. In numerical weather prediction, data assimilation is used to estimate the current atmospheric state, which then serves as an initial condition for a forecast. New developments in the treatment of observation uncertainties have recently been shown to cause convergence problems for this least‐squares minimisation. This is important for operational numerical weather prediction centres due to the time constraints of producing regular forecasts. The condition number of the Hessian of the objective function can be used as a proxy to investigate the speed of convergence of the least‐squares minimisation. In this paper we develop novel theoretical bounds on the condition number of the Hessian. These new bounds depend on the minimum eigenvalue of the observation error covariance matrix and the ratio of background error variance to observation error variance. Numerical tests in a linear setting show that the location of observation measurements has an important effect on the condition number of the Hessian. We identify that the conditioning of the problem is related to the complex interactions between observation error covariance and background error covariance matrices. Increased understanding of the role of each constituent matrix in the conditioning of the Hessian will prove useful for informing the choice of correlated observation error covariance matrix and observation location, particularly for practical applications.  相似文献

We give in this paper an explicit formula for the condition number of the linear least squares problem (LLSP) defined by min Ax–b2,x n . Let and be two positive real numbers, we choose the weighted Frobenius norm [A, b] F on the data and the usual Euclidean norm on the solution. A straightforward generalization of the backward error of [9] to this norm is also provided. This allows us to carry out a first order estimate of the forward error for the LLSP with this norm. This enables us to perform a complete backward error analysis in the chosen norms.Finally, some numerical results are presented in the last section on matrices from the collection of [5]. Three algorithms have been tested: the QR factorization, the Normal Equations (NE), the Semi-Normal Equations (SNE).  相似文献

In this paper, based on the theory of adjoint operators and dual norms, we define condition numbers for a linear solution function of the weighted linear least squares problem. The explicit expressions of the normwise and componentwise condition numbers derived in this paper can be computed at low cost when the dimension of the linear function is low due to dual operator theory. Moreover, we use the augmented system to perform a componentwise perturbation analysis of the solution and residual of the weighted linear least squares problems. We also propose two efficient condition number estimators. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that our condition numbers give accurate perturbation bounds and can reveal the conditioning of individual components of the solution. Our condition number estimators are accurate as well as efficient.  相似文献

Lower bounds on the condition number of a real confluent Vandermonde matrix are established in terms of the dimension , or and the largest absolute value among all nodes that define the confluent Vandermonde matrix and the interval that contains the nodes. In particular, it is proved that for any modest (the largest multiplicity of distinct nodes), behaves no smaller than , or than if all nodes are nonnegative. It is not clear whether those bounds are asymptotically sharp for modest .

The standard approaches to solving an overdetermined linear system Ax ≈ b find minimal corrections to the vector b and/or the matrix A such that the corrected system is consistent, such as the least squares (LS), the data least squares (DLS) and the total least squares (TLS). The scaled total least squares (STLS) method unifies the LS, DLS and TLS methods. The classical normwise condition numbers for the LS problem have been widely studied. However, there are no such similar results for the TLS and the STLS problems. In this paper, we first present a perturbation analysis of the STLS problem, which is a generalization of the TLS problem, and give a normwise condition number for the STLS problem. Different from normwise condition numbers, which measure the sizes of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms, componentwise condition numbers take into account the relation of each data component, and possible data sparsity. Then in this paper we give explicit expressions for the estimates of the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the STLS problem. Since the TLS problem is a special case of the STLS problem, the condition numbers for the TLS problem follow immediately from our STLS results. All the discussions in this paper are under the Golub-Van Loan condition for the existence and uniqueness of the STLS solution. Using the modified matrix-vector equation approach, the technique of Lyapunov majorant function and the Banach fixed point theorem, we obtain some new rigorous perturbation bounds for R factor of the hyperbolic QR factorization under normwise perturbation. These bounds are always tighter than the one given in the literature. Moreover, the optimal first-order perturbation bounds and the normwise condition numbers for the hyperbolic QR factorization are also presented.  相似文献

In this article we first give an upper bound for the chromatic number of a graph in terms of its degrees. This bound generalizes and modifies the bound given in 11 . Next, we obtain an upper bound of the order of magnitude for the coloring number of a graph with small K2,t (as subgraph), where n is the order of the graph. Finally, we give some bounds for chromatic number in terms of girth and book size. These bounds improve the best known bound, in terms of order and girth, for the chromatic number of a graph when its girth is an even integer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, we address the accuracy of the results for the overdetermined full rank linear least‐squares problem. We recall theoretical results obtained in (SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 2007; 29 (2):413–433) on conditioning of the least‐squares solution and the components of the solution when the matrix perturbations are measured in Frobenius or spectral norms. Then we define computable estimates for these condition numbers and we interpret them in terms of statistical quantities when the regression matrix and the right‐hand side are perturbed. In particular, we show that in the classical linear statistical model, the ratio of the variance of one component of the solution by the variance of the right‐hand side is exactly the condition number of this solution component when only perturbations on the right‐hand side are considered. We explain how to compute the variance–covariance matrix and the least‐squares conditioning using the libraries LAPACK (LAPACK Users' Guide (3rd edn). SIAM: Philadelphia, 1999) and ScaLAPACK (ScaLAPACK Users' Guide. SIAM: Philadelphia, 1997) and we give the corresponding computational cost. Finally we present a small historical numerical example that was used by Laplace (Théorie Analytique des Probabilités. Through numerical experiments, we examine the condition numbers of the interpolation matrix for many species of radial basis functions (RBFs), mostly on uniform grids. For most RBF species that give infinite order accuracy when interpolating smooth f(x)—Gaussians, sech's and Inverse Quadratics—the condition number κ(α,N) rapidly asymptotes to a limit κasymp(α) that is independent of N and depends only on α, the inverse width relative to the grid spacing. Multiquadrics are an exception in that the condition number for fixed α grows as N2. For all four, there is growth proportional to an exponential of 1/α (1/α2 for Gaussians). For splines and thin-plate splines, which contain no width parameter, the condition numbers grows asymptotically as a power of N—a large power as the order of the RBF increases. Random grids typically increase the condition number (for fixed RBF width) by orders of magnitude. The quasi-random, low discrepancy Halton grid may, however, have a lower condition number than a uniform grid of the same size.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers and their upper bounds for the Moore–Penrose inverse of the Kronecker product and more general matrix function compositions involving Kronecker products. We also present the condition numbers and their upper bounds for the associated Kronecker product linear least squares solution with full column rank. In practice, the derived upper bounds for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for Kronecker product linear least squares solution can be efficiently estimated using the Hager–Higham Algorithm. We show that for any graph G, the chromatic number χ(G) ≤ Δ2(G) + 1, where Δ2(G) is the largest degree that a vertex ν can have subject to the condition that ν is adjacent to a vertex whose degree is at least as big as its own. Additive Schwarz preconditioners, when including a coarse grid correction, are said to be optimal for certain discretized partial differential equations, in the sense that bounds on the convergence of iterative methods are independent of the mesh size h. Cai and Zou (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 2002; 9 :379–397) showed with a one‐dimensional example that in the absence of a coarse grid correction the usual GMRES bound has a factor of the order of . In this paper we consider the same example and show that for that example the behavior of the method is not well represented by the above‐mentioned bound: We use an a posteriori bound for GMRES from (SIAM Rev. 2005; 47 :247–272) and show that for that example a relevant factor is bounded by a constant. Furthermore, for a sequence of meshes, the convergence curves for that one‐dimensional example, and for several two‐dimensional model problems, are very close to each other; thus, the number of preconditioned GMRES iterations needed for convergence for a prescribed tolerance remains almost constant. Lovász and Schrijver (SIAM J. Optim. 1:166–190, 1991) have constructed semidefinite relaxations for the stable set polytope of a graph G = (V,E) by a sequence of lift-and-project operations; their procedure finds the stable set polytope in at most α(G) steps, where α(G) is the stability number of G. Two other hierarchies of semidefinite bounds for the stability number have been proposed by Lasserre (SIAM J. Optim. 11:796–817, 2001; Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp 293–303, 2001) and by de Klerk and Pasechnik (SIAM J. Optim. 12:875–892), which are based on relaxing nonnegativity of a polynomial by requiring the existence of a sum of squares decomposition. The hierarchy of Lasserre is known to converge in α(G) steps as it refines the hierarchy of Lovász and Schrijver, and de Klerk and Pasechnik conjecture that their hierarchy also finds the stability number after α(G) steps. We prove this conjecture for graphs with stability number at most 8 and we show that the hierarchy of Lasserre refines the hierarchy of de Klerk and Pasechnik.   相似文献

One of the most successful methods for solving the least‐squares problem minxAx?b2 with a highly ill‐conditioned or rank deficient coefficient matrix A is the method of Tikhonov regularization. In this paper, we derive the normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers and componentwise perturbation bounds for the Tikhonov regularization. Our results are sharper than the known results. The Gauss-Newton method for solving nonlinear least squares problems is studied in this paper. Under the hypothesis that the derivative of the function associated with the least square problem satisfies a majorant condition, a local convergence analysis is presented. This analysis allows us to obtain the optimal convergence radius and the biggest range for the uniqueness of stationary point, and to unify two previous and unrelated results.  相似文献

The null space method is a standard method for solving the linear least squares problem subject to equality constraints (the LSE problem). We show that three variants of the method, including one used in LAPACK that is based on the generalized QR factorization, are numerically stable. We derive two perturbation bounds for the LSE problem: one of standard form that is not attainable, and a bound that yields the condition number of the LSE problem to within a small constant factor. By combining the backward error analysis and perturbation bounds we derive an approximate forward error bound suitable for practical computation. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the sharpness of this bound.  相似文献
