The self-assembled inclusion of molecules into two-dimensional (2D) porous networks on surfaces has been extensively studied because 2D functional materials consisting of organic molecules have become an important research topic. However, the isolation of a single molecular thiol remains a challenging goal. Here, we report a method of planting and isolating organothiols onto a 2D patterned organic adlayer at an electrochemical interface. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy revealed that the phase transition of an ovalene adlayer is electrochemically induced and that the gap site created by three ovalene molecules serves as a 2D molecular template to isolate thiol molecules and to standardize the distance between them via the formation of precise selective open spaces, suggesting that electrochemical “molecular planting” opens applications for 2D patterns of isolated single organothiol molecules.

Gap sites electrochemically created in the ovalene adlayer can accept a single thiol.  相似文献

A metal-free oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles utilizing a nitrogen/phosphorus co-doped porous carbon (NPCH) catalyst is reported. The optimal material is robust against traditional poisoning agents and shows high antioxidant resistance. It exhibits good catalytic performance for the synthesis of various quinoline, indole, isoquinoline, and quinoxaline ‘on-water’ under air atmosphere. The active sites in the NPCH catalyst are proposed to be phosphorus and nitrogen centers within the porous carbon network.

Green oxidations made easy. Metal-free dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles are possible in using N,P-co-doped porous carbon materials “on” water using air.  相似文献

We report that the outcome of the tin–boron exchange reaction of a mixed thiophene-benzo-fused stannole with aryldibromoboranes is associated with the steric bulk of the aryl substituent of the borane reagent, leading to either boroles or large diboracycles as products. NMR spectroscopic studies indicate that the two products can reversibly interconvert in solution, and mechanistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal boroles to be intermediates in the formation of the diboracyclic products. The addition of Lewis bases to the diboracycles leads to the corresponding borole adducts, demonstrating that they react as “masked” boroles. Additionally, the reaction of the title compounds with a series of organic azides affords complex heteropropellanes, formally 2 : 1 borole-azide adducts, that deviate from the usual BN aromatic compounds formed via nitrogen atom insertion into the boroles.

Diboramacrocycles are a new form of borole dimers, participating in various addition reactions as “masked” boroles. The reaction of a less crowded diboramacrocycle with organic azides affords unprecedented complex heteropropellanes.  相似文献

“de Vries” liquid crystals, defined by a maximum layer shrinkage of ≤1% from the smectic A to C phase transition, are an integral component of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) displays. Bona fide de Vries materials described in the literature are primarily perfluorinated, polysiloxane and polysilane-terminated rod-like (or calamitic) LCs. Herein, for the first time, we report a series of newly designed achiral unsymmetrical bent-core molecules with terminal alkoxy chains exhibiting similar properties to “de Vries” LCs. The new molecular structure is based on the systematic distribution of four phenyl rings attached via ester and imine linkers having 3-amino-2-methylbenzoic acid as the central core with a bent angle of 147°. Detailed microscopic investigations in differently aligned (planar as well as homeotropic) cells along with SAXS/WAXS studies revealed that the materials exhibited a SmA–SmC phase sequence along with the appearance of the nematic phase at higher temperatures. SAXS measurements divulged the layer spacings (d-spacings) and hence, the layer shrinkage was calculated ranging from 0.19% to 0.68% just below the SmA–SmC transition. The variation of the calculated molecular tilt angle (α) derived from the temperature-dependent SAXS data, followed the power law with exponent values 0.29 ± 0.01 and 0.25 ± 0.01 for compounds 1/10 and 1/12, respectively. The experimental values obtained were very close to the theoretically predicted values for the materials with de Vries-like properties. The analysis of temperature-dependent birefringence studies based on the prediction of the Landau theory, showed a dip across the SmA–SmC phase transition typical of compounds exhibiting the de Vries characteristics. The collective results obtained suggest “de Vries” SmA as a probable model for this bent-core system which may find applications in displays.

A simple molecular design of unsymmetrical bent-core molecules exhibiting low layer shrinkage and a dip in the birefringence at the SmA–SmC phase transition, typical characteristics of “de Vries” liquid crystals.  相似文献

Soft molecular assemblies that respond reversibly to external stimuli are attractive materials as on/off switches, in optoelectronic, memory and sensor technologies. In this Edge Article, we present the reversible structural rearrangement of a soft porphyrin membrane under an electrical potential stimulus in the absence of solid-state architectures. The free-floating porphyrin membrane lies at the interface between immiscible aqueous and organic electrolyte solutions and is formed through interfacial self-assembly of zinc(ii) meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrins (ZnPor). A potential difference between the two immiscible electrolyte solutions induces the intercalation of bis(triphenylphosphoranylidene)ammonium cations from the organic electrolyte that exchange with protons in the porphyrin membrane. In situ UV/vis absorbance spectroscopy shows that this ionic intercalation and exchange induces a structural interconversion of the individual porphyrin molecules in the membrane from an H- to a J-type molecular configuration. These structural rearrangements are reversible over 30 potential cycles. In situ polarisation-modulation fluorescence spectroscopy further provides clear evidence of structural interconversion of the porphyrin membrane, as intercalation of the organic electrolyte cations significantly affects the latter''s emissive properties. By adjusting the pH of the aqueous phase, additional control of the electrochemically reversible structural interconversion can be achieved, with total suppression at pH 3.

The structural rearrangement of a porphyrin membrane self-assembled at a “soft” liquid|liquid interface from a H- to J-molecular configuration is reversibly modulated by externally manipulating the interfacial Galvani potential difference.  相似文献

Nucleic acid-based dissipative, out-of-equilibrium systems are introduced as functional assemblies emulating transient dissipative biological transformations. One system involves a Pb2+-ion-dependent DNAzyme fuel strand-driven network leading to the transient cleavage of the fuel strand to “waste” products. Applying the Pb2+-ion-dependent DNAzyme to two competitive fuel strand-driven systems yields two parallel operating networks. Blocking the competitively operating networks with selective inhibitors leads, however, to gated transient operation of dictated networks, yielding gated catalytic operations. A second system introduces a “non-waste” generating out-of-equilibrium, dissipative network driven by light. The system consists of a trans-azobenzene-functionalized photoactive module that is reconfigured by light to an intermediary state consisting of cis-azobenzene units that are thermally recovered to the original trans-azobenzene-modified module. The cyclic transient photoinduced operation of the device is demonstrated. The kinetic simulation of the systems allows the prediction of the transient behavior of the networks under different auxiliary conditions.

Functional DNA modules are triggered in the presence of appropriate inhibitors to yield transient gated catalytic functions, and a photoresponsive DNA module leads to “waste-free” operation of transient, dissipative dynamic transitions.  相似文献

Invited for this month''s cover picture are the groups of Wolfgang Hübner (TU Kaiserslautern, Germany), Annie Powell (Karlsruhe Institut of Technology, Germany), and Andreas‐Neil Unterreiner (Karlsruhe Institut of Technology, Germany). The cover picture shows the Dy2Ni2‐molecular magnet being excited with a UV/Vis laser pulse, together with its time‐resolved spectrum after the pulse. The comparison of the theoretical and the experimental spectra together with both the observed and the calculated relaxation times reveal, among others, three key points: the intermediate states participating in the laser‐induced dynamics, the partial metal‐to‐oxygen charge‐transfer excitations, and the order of magnitude of the coupling of the molecular magnet to the thermal bath of the environment. An efficient palladium-catalyzed AAA reaction with a simple α-sulfonyl carbon anion as nucleophiles is presented for the first time. Allyl fluorides are used as superior precursors for the generation of π-allyl complexes that upon ionization liberate fluoride anions for activation of silylated nucleophiles. With the unique bidentate diamidophosphite ligand ligated palladium as catalyst, the in situ generated α-sulfonyl carbon anion was quickly captured by the allylic intermediates, affording a series of chiral homo-allylic sulfones with high efficiency and selectivity. This work provides a mild in situ desilylation strategy to reveal nucleophilic carbon centers that could be used to overcome the pKa limitation of “hard” nucleophiles in enantioselective transformations.

A variety of “hard” α-sulfonyl carbanions of aryl, heteroaryl and alkyl sulfones were successfully employed as nucleophiles in palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation with excellent enantioselectivities.  相似文献

Luminogens characteristic of aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have been extensively exploited for the development of imaging-guided photodynamic therapeutic (PDT) agents. However, intramolecular rotation of donor–acceptor (D–A) type AIEgens favors non-radiative decay of photonic energy which results in unsatisfactory fluorescence quantum and singlet oxygen yields. To address this issue, we developed several molecularly engineered AIEgens with partially “locked” molecular structures enhancing both fluorescence emission and the production of triplet excitons. A triphenylphosphine group was introduced to form a D–A conjugate, improving water solubility and the capacity for mitochondrial localization of the resulting probes. Experimental and theoretical analyses suggest that the much higher quantum and singlet oxygen yield of a structurally “significantly-locked” probe (LOCK-2) than its “partially locked” (LOCK-1) and “unlocked” equivalent (LOCK-0) is a result of suppressed AIE and twisted intramolecular charge transfer. LOCK-2 was also used for the mitochondrial-targeting, fluorescence image-guided PDT of liver cancer cells.

Virtual high-throughput screening (VHTS) with density functional theory (DFT) and machine-learning (ML)-acceleration is essential in rapid materials discovery. By necessity, efficient DFT-based workflows are carried out with a single density functional approximation (DFA). Nevertheless, properties evaluated with different DFAs can be expected to disagree for cases with challenging electronic structure (e.g., open-shell transition-metal complexes, TMCs) for which rapid screening is most needed and accurate benchmarks are often unavailable. To quantify the effect of DFA bias, we introduce an approach to rapidly obtain property predictions from 23 representative DFAs spanning multiple families, “rungs” (e.g., semi-local to double hybrid) and basis sets on over 2000 TMCs. Although computed property values (e.g., spin state splitting and frontier orbital gap) differ by DFA, high linear correlations persist across all DFAs. We train independent ML models for each DFA and observe convergent trends in feature importance, providing DFA-invariant, universal design rules. We devise a strategy to train artificial neural network (ANN) models informed by all 23 DFAs and use them to predict properties (e.g., spin-splitting energy) of over 187k TMCs. By requiring consensus of the ANN-predicted DFA properties, we improve correspondence of computational lead compounds with literature-mined, experimental compounds over the typically employed single-DFA approach.

Machine learning (ML)-based feature analysis reveals universal design rules regardless of density functional choices. Using the consensus among multiple functionals, we identify robust lead complexes in ML-accelerated chemical discovery.  相似文献

Chirality is important to chemistry, biology and optoelectronic materials. The study on chirality has lasted for more than 170 years since its discovery. Recently, chiral materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have attracted increasing interest because of their fascinating photophysical properties. In this review, we discussed the recent development of chiral materials with AIE properties, including their molecular structures, self-assembly and functions. Generally, the most effective strategy to design a chiral AIE luminogen (AIEgen) is to attach a chiral scaffold to an AIE-active fluorophore through covalent bonds. Moreover, some propeller-like or shell-like AIEgens without chiral units exhibit latent chirality upon mirror image symmetry breaking. The chirality of achiral AIEgens can also be induced by some optically active molecules through non-covalent interactions. The introduction of an AIE unit into chiral materials can enhance the efficiency of their circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the solid state and the dissymmetric factors of their helical architectures formed through self-assembly. Thus, highly efficient circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CPOLEDs) with AIE characteristics are developed and show great potential in 3D displays. Chiral AIEgens are also widely utilized as “turn on” sensors for rapid enantioselective determination of chiral reagents. It is anticipated that the present review can entice readers to realize the importance of chirality and attract much more chemists to contribute their efforts to chirality and AIE study.

This review highlights the recent development of chiral materials with aggregation-induced emission properties, including their molecular structures, self-assembly and functions.  相似文献

Carbon atom functionalization via generation of carbanions is the cornerstone of carborane chemistry. In this work, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of free ortho-carboranyl [C2B10H11], a three-dimensional inorganic analog of the elusive phenyl anion that features a “naked” carbanion center. The first example of a stable, discrete C(H)-deprotonated carborane anion was isolated as a completely separated ion pair with a crown ether-encapsulated potassium cation. An analogous approach led to the isolation and structural characterization of a doubly deprotonated 1,1′-bis(o-carborane) anion [C2B10H10]22−, which is the first example of a discrete molecular dicarbanion. These reactive carbanions are key intermediates in carbon vertex chemistry of carborane clusters.

Free three-dimensional carborane carbanions, which are inorganic siblings of deprotonated aryls with the “naked” anionic carbon atom are reported.  相似文献

The controlled synthesis of biphenyls, which play a prominent role in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and liquid crystals, typically requires hazardous organometallic reagents, aryl halides, and heavy metal catalysts. We recently reported a metal-free, photochemical alternative (“photosplicing”) for the selective preparation of a wide range of pharmaceutically important biphenyls. Whereas the traceless sulfonamide linker enables and controls the aryl coupling, unwanted toxic byproducts are released. Therefore, we designed over 25 different temporary linkers and tested them for their suitability for the photosplicing reaction in a flow reactor. We found that a surprisingly high number of functional groups enable light-induced aryl fusion and identified a number of linkers for environmentally friendly procedures. We also report that a thiol-ene (click) – photosplicing sequence enables a convenient route to biaryls such as liquid crystals. This work sheds light on thus far neglected photochemistry of temporary linkers, reduces toxic byproducts, and expands the available starting materials for metal-free biphenyl synthesis.

A series of photoactivatable linkers for metal-free biphenyl synthesis is presented. Alternative substrates for the photosplicing reaction can reduce toxic byproducts and problematic starting materials.  相似文献

The functions of natural nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA have transcended genetic information carriers and now encompass affinity reagents, molecular catalysts, nanostructures, data storage, and many others. However, the vulnerability of natural nucleic acids to nuclease degradation and the lack of chemical functionality have imposed a significant constraint on their ever-expanding applications. Herein, we report the synthesis and polymerase recognition of a 5-(octa-1,7-diynyl)uracil 2′-deoxy-2′-fluoroarabinonucleic acid (FANA) triphosphate. The DNA-templated, polymerase-mediated primer extension using this “click handle”-modified FANA (cmFANA) triphosphate and other FANA nucleotide triphosphates consisting of canonical nucleobases efficiently generated full-length products. The resulting cmFANA polymers exhibited excellent nuclease resistance and the ability to undergo efficient click conjugation with azide-functionalized molecules, thereby becoming a promising platform for serving as a programmable and evolvable synthetic genetic polymer capable of post-polymerization functionalization.

Polymerase-mediated incorporation of a “click handle”-modified fluoroarabinonucleic acid (cmFANA) triphosphate produces a new class of nuclease-resistant, evolvable genetic polymers that can be functionalized with azide-containing molecules.  相似文献

Strong electron correlation plays an important role in transition-metal and heavy-metal chemistry, magnetic molecules, bond breaking, biradicals, excited states, and many functional materials, but it provides a significant challenge for modern electronic structure theory. The treatment of strongly correlated systems usually requires a multireference method to adequately describe spin densities and near-degeneracy correlation. However, quantitative computation of dynamic correlation with multireference wave functions is often difficult or impractical. Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) provides a way to blend multiconfiguration wave function theory and density functional theory to quantitatively treat both near-degeneracy correlation and dynamic correlation in strongly correlated systems; it is more affordable than multireference perturbation theory, multireference configuration interaction, or multireference coupled cluster theory and more accurate for many properties than Kohn–Sham density functional theory. This perspective article provides a brief introduction to strongly correlated systems and previously reviewed progress on MC-PDFT followed by a discussion of several recent developments and applications of MC-PDFT and related methods, including localized-active-space MC-PDFT, generalized active-space MC-PDFT, density-matrix-renormalization-group MC-PDFT, hybrid MC-PDFT, multistate MC-PDFT, spin–orbit coupling, analytic gradients, and dipole moments. We also review the more recently introduced multiconfiguration nonclassical-energy functional theory (MC-NEFT), which is like MC-PDFT but allows for other ingredients in the nonclassical-energy functional. We discuss two new kinds of MC-NEFT methods, namely multiconfiguration density coherence functional theory and machine-learned functionals.

This feature article overviews recent work on active spaces, matrix product reference states, treatment of quasidegeneracy, hybrid theory, density-coherence functionals, machine-learned functionals, spin–orbit coupling, gradients, and dipole moments.  相似文献

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) comprises a sophisticated cascade of reactions. Despite advances in mechanistic studies by electrochemistry and spectroscopy, a lack of access to dynamic molecular information renders many plausible ECL pathways unclear or unproven. Here we describe the construction of a real-time ECL mass spectrometry (MS) platform (RT-Triplex) for synchronization of dynamic electrical, luminescent, and mass spectrometric outputs during ECL events. This platform allows immediate and continuous sampling of newly born species at the Pt wire electrode of a capillary electrochemical (EC) microreactor into MS, enabling characterization of short-lived intermediates and the multi-step EC processes. Two ECL pathways of luminol are validated by observing the key intermediates α-hydroxy hydroperoxide and diazaquinone and unraveling their correlation with applied voltage and ECL emission. Moreover, a “catalytic ECL route” of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) involving homogeneous oxidation of tri-n-propylamine with the BODIPY radical cation is proposed and verified.

A real-time electrochemiluminescence mass spectrometry platform (RT-Triplex) was developed for revealing ECL mechanisms by synchronization of dynamic electrical, luminescent, and mass spectrometric signals at the electrode–electrolyte interface.  相似文献

DNA tweezers have emerged as powerful devices for a wide range of biochemical and sensing applications; however, most DNA tweezers consist of single units activated by DNA recognition, limiting their range of motion and ability to respond to complex stimuli. Herein, we present an extended, tripodal DNA nanotweezer with a small molecule junction. Simultaneous, asymmetric elongation of our molecular core is achieved using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to produce length- and sequence-specific DNA arms with repeating DNA regions. When rigidified, our DNA tweezer can be addressed with streptavidin-binding ligands. Full control over the number, separation, and location of these ligands enables site-specific streptavidin recognition; all three arms of the DNA nanotweezer wrap around multiple streptavidin units simultaneously. Our approach combines the simplicity of DNA tile arrays with the size regime normally provided by DNA origami, offering an integrated platform for the use of branched DNA scaffolds as structural building blocks, protein sensors, and dynamic, stimuli-responsive materials.

An extended, multivalent DNA nanotweezer that undergoes large-scale molecular motion upon protein recognition is presented. Our method based on “printing-elongation-folding” combines the DNA-minimal aspect of DNA tile-based assembly, with complexity of DNA origami.  相似文献

The “coordination-insertion” ring-opening polymerization (ROP) mechanism has so far been the monopoly of metal catalysts. In this work, we present a metal-free “coordination-insertion” ROP of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) and ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), as well as their sequential block copolymerization, with N-trimethylsilyl-bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TMSNTf2) as the non-metallic initiator/catalyst. TMSNTf2 was proposed to work through an unprecedented metal-free “coordination-insertion” mechanism, which involves the coordination of monomer to the Si atom of TMSNTf2, the nucleophilic attack of the –NTf2 group on the coordinated monomer, and the cleavage of the acyl–oxygen bond of the monomer. The proposed metal-free “coordination-insertion” ROP was studied by NMR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF analyses. In addition, the TMSNTf2-mediated ROP of TMC and ε-CL led to linear and cyclic polymers following two-stage first-order polymerization processes, as evidenced by structural analyses and kinetics study, which further demonstrated the metal-free “coordination-insertion” mechanism.

The first metal-free “coordination-insertion” ROP of cyclic carbonate and lactones mediated by N-trimethylsilyl-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TMSNTf2) was proposed, which in the past was exclusively the monopoly of metal complex catalysts.  相似文献

Platinum terpyridyl complexes, stacked on top of one another and secured as dimers with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) in aqueous medium, were functionalized quantitatively and in situ with a pair of pentapeptides Phe-(Gly)3-Cys by grafting their cysteine residues to the Pt centers. The resulting CB[8]·(Pt·peptide)2 assemblies were used to target secondary hosts CB[7] and CB[8] via their pair of phenylalanine residues, again in situ. A series of well-defined architectures, including a supramolecular “pendant necklace” with hybrid head-to-head and head-to-tail arrangements inside CB[8], were obtained during the self-sorting process after combining only 3 or 4 simple building units.
