We covariantly first-quantize, via the BRST approach, the closed bosonic string compactified on a torus — in particular the 18-dimensional theory with E8 × E8 gauge bosons. Further, we give the corresponding free field theory. Thus the model is ready for the introduction of string interactions, and may be very useful for the study of gauge interactions in string theories.  相似文献

We calculate the one loop partition functions of a toroidally compactified open bosonic string (fromD=26 toD=10) in the path integral formalism. By a certain combination of the compactified sectors it is shown that the partition functions of a compactified open bosonic string vanish in both annulus and Möbius strip topologies as in the open superstring case. We also discuss the consistency requirement for the equivalence between the compactified open bosonic string and the open superstring with the gauge groups (SO(8192) andSO(32), respectively.  相似文献

We discuss the existence of a non-abelian gauge structure associated with flavor mixing. In the specific case of two flavor mixing of Dirac neutrino fields, we show that this reformulation allows to define flavor neutrino states which preserve the Poincaré structure. Properties of the effective gauge couplings renormalized at finite temperature and density in thermal non-abelian gauge field theories are studied within one-loop approximations. Strong and severe vertex dependence is shown to come out both in the temperature and chemical potential dependences. Difficulties appearing in the perturbative calculation of physical quantities, indicated by the above disaster, are discussed. Also discussed is what insight might be gained from the present analysis into the “magnetic” screening of effective charge.  相似文献

We consider the Salam-Weinberg theory by introducing tensor gauge fields. When these fields are coupled in a topological way with the vector ones, the resulting system constitutes an alternative mechanism of mass generation for vector fields without the presence of Higgs bosons. We show that these masses are in agreement with the ones obtained by means of the spontaneous symmetry breaking.  相似文献

We study the classical field equations of the pure gauge sector of superstrings compactified to four dimensions. Instantons no longer turn out to be solutions of the field equations. We also determine the dynamical behavior of the gauge coupling g in the background of a monopole field, with the result that g and the strong CP-violating angle θ tend to a constant far from the monopole. Following Witten, an associative product is constructed for fields on open strings, with BRST ghosts, which has the same topological structure as that in the light-cone gauge. The product is shown to be well defined on a certain class of string functionals. The corresponding action is that of Chern-Simons. The open Nambu string is revisited in the spirit of an early approach by Rohrlich. Strictly timelike motions only are considered. The proper-time of the center-of-mass is taken as preferred parameter. We propose a canonical formalism in terms of a countable infinity of variables, among them the modes. But the barycentric coordinates have noncommuting components, which makes possible a consistent quantization (in any dimension, four in particular) within the framework of a transverse space of states. If a maximal number of modes is further fixed, a transverse Hilbert space emerges, where spacetime displacements preserve the (positive-definite) scalar product.This article is dedicated to Fritz Rohrlich.  相似文献

We study the dynamics generated by local gauge invariance under a non-abelianSU(N) group for two nonrelativistic particles interacting through the effect of the group charges. It is argued that gauge invariance of the first quantized bosonic string is preserved by a mutual cancellation of the conformai and reparametrization anomalies. The coupling to abelian background gauge fields of closed bosonic strings compactified on a torus is considered. There exist specific field configurations for which the theory cannot be defined consistently, in spite of the fact that the field equations of motion are then solved exactly. This critical behaviour is related to a breakdown of local and global world-sheet symmetries, as well as of spacetime unitarity. A physical interpretation of this phenomenon is proposed. The issue of spacetime duality is also discussed. This symmetry is shown to be partially broken for generic background field configurations.  相似文献

Gauge bosons associated with unbroken gauge symmetries, under which all standard model fields are singlets, may interact with ordinary matter via higher-dimensional operators. A complete set of dimension-six operators involving a massless U(1) field, gamma('), and standard model fields is presented. The mu-->egamma(') decay, primordial nucleosynthesis, star cooling, and other phenomena set lower limits on the scale of chirality-flip operators in the 1-15 TeV range if the operators have coefficients given by the corresponding Yukawa couplings. Simple renormalizable models induce gamma(') interactions with leptons or quarks at two loops, and may provide a cold dark matter candidate.  相似文献
