We show that non-zero gaugino condensates of several non-abelian gauge groups G1⊗…⊗Gk∃E8 in low-energy d=4 superstring E8⊗E6 gauge theory can lead to the exponentially small (compared to the Planck scale) supersymmetry breaking scale. The Hosotani mechanism can provide the E8→G1⊗…⊗Gk breaking.

We describe recent work on constructing four-dimensional string models with moduli stabilized by field strength fluxes and chiral gauge sectors close to the Standard Model from D-brane configurations. We discuss how the interplay of both ingredients relates to phenomenological issues, in particular the appearance of soft terms on the D-brane gauge sector induce from non-supersymmetric flux backgrounds.

We discuss the supersymmetry breaking in four-dimensional supergravity models from superstrings including perturbative or non-perturbative string σ-model corrections. It is found that various soft supersymmetry breaking terms can appear with values of the order ofm 3/2 even at the tree level of effective field theory and of string theory.

We discuss the clash between the absence of fine tuning in the Higgs potential and a sufficient suppression of flavour changing neutral current transitions in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. It is pointed out that horizontalU(1) symmetry combined with theD-term supersymmetry breaking provides a realistic framework for solving both problems.

We derive sum rules for the sparticle masses in different models of supersymmetry breaking. This includes the gravity-mediated models (SUGRA models) as well as models in which supersymmetry breaking terms are induced by super-Weyl anomaly (AMSB models). These sum rules can help in distinguishing between these models. In particular, we obtain an upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutralino as a function of the gluino mass in SUGRA and AMSB models.

We consider a class of models in which supersymmetry breaking is communicated dominantly via a U1' gauge interaction, which also helps solve the mu problem. Such models can emerge naturally in top-down constructions and are a version of split supersymmetry. The spectrum contains heavy sfermions, Higgsinos, exotics, and Z' approximately 10-100 TeV, light gauginos approximately 100-1000 GeV, a light Higgs boson approximately 140 GeV, and a light singlino. A specific set of U1' charges and exotics is analyzed, and we present five benchmark models. The implications for the gluino lifetime, cold dark matter, and the gravitino and neutrino masses are discussed.

It is shown that the existence of a transition operator, which interchanges the BRS charges of the Neveu-Schwarz and the Ramond sectors, implies space-time supersymmetry in the covariant free open superstring field theory proposed previously by the present authors.

We study the partial spontaneous breaking of a global supersymmetry algebra. A formalism developed by Volkov for nonlinearly realized spacetime symmetries is very useful. The case analyzed in detail is two-dimensional (2,2) supersymmetry with a central charge spontaneously broken to (0,2). This algebra, which is realized in supersymmetric Nielsen-Olesen strings, leads to the Green-Schwarz superstring action.

We explicitly derive the ghost oscillator contribution to the gauge covariant fermion emission vertex. This vertex is used to construct the space-time supersymmetry transformation laws which are shown to be an invariance of the free gauge covariant action of the superstring. We develop methods to deal with the quadratic exponentials which appear in the fermion emission vertex, in order to study the closure of the supersymmetry algebra. As a by-product, we complete the proof of the equivalence between the “old” and “new” formulations of the superstring.

We prove that the existence of a slightly massive or gravitino or gaugino in a class of gaussian string compactifications, implies the existence of an entire tower of such states below MPlanck, signaling the approach to a limit of decompactification.

General conditions for dynamical supersymmetry breaking are discussed. Very small effects that would usually be ignored, such as instantons of a grand unified theory, might break supersymmetry at a low energy scale. Examples are given (in 0 + 1 and 2 + 1 dimensions) in which dynamical supersymmetry breaking occurs. Difficulties that confront such a program in four dimensions are described.

While the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) with universal gaugino masses, m 1/2, scalar masses, m 0, and A-terms, A 0, defined at some high energy scale (usually taken to be the GUT scale) is motivated by general features of supergravity models, it does not carry all of the constraints imposed by minimal supergravity (mSUGRA). In particular, the CMSSM does not impose a relation between the trilinear and bilinear soft supersymmetry breaking terms, B 0=A 0?m 0, nor does it impose the relation between the soft scalar masses and the gravitino mass, m 0=m 3/2. As a consequence, tanβ is computed given values of the other CMSSM input parameters. By considering a Giudice–Masiero (GM) extension to mSUGRA, one can introduce new parameters to the Kähler potential which are associated with the Higgs sector and recover many of the standard CMSSM predictions. However, depending on the value of A 0, one may have a gravitino or a neutralino dark matter candidate. We also consider the consequences of imposing the universality conditions above the GUT scale. This GM extension provides a natural UV completion for the CMSSM.

It is conjectured that flavor mixing furnishes a universal mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry. The conjecture is proved explicitly for the mixing of two chiral N=1 supermultiplets and arguments for its general validity are given. That is an instance of the O?Raifeartaigh Lagrangian for which there is no tree-level nor perturbative breaking. Nonetheless, the dynamical breaking occurs due to the vacuum condensate, a mixing-induced nonperturbative effect that lifts the zero point energy.
