We reformulate the BRST quantisation of chiral Virasoro and W3 worldsheet gravities. Our approach follows directly the classic BRST formulation of Yang-Mills theory in employing a derivative gauge condition instead of the conventional conformal gauge condition, supplemented by an introduction of momenta in order to put the ghost action back into first-order form. The consequence of these simple changes is a considerable simplification of the BRST formulation, the evaluation of anomalies and the expression of Wess-Zumino consistency conditions. In particular, the transformation rules of all fields now constitute a canonical transformation generated by the BRST operator Q, and we obtain in this reformulation a new result that the anomaly in the BRST Ward identity is obtained by application of the anomalous operator Q2, calculated using operator products, to the gauge fermion.  相似文献

We show that it is possible to formulate the most general first-class gauge algebra of the operator formalism by only using BRST-invariant constraints. In particular, we extend a previous construction for irreducible gauge algebras to the reducible case. The gauge algebra induces two nilpotent, Grassmann-odd, mutually anti-commuting BRST operators that bear structural similarities with BRST/anti-BRST theories but with shifted ghost number assignments. In both cases we show how the extended BRST algebra can be encoded into an operator master equation. A unitarizing Hamiltonian that respects the two BRST symmetries is constructed with the help of a gauge-fixing boson. Abelian reducible theories are shown explicitly in full detail, while non-Abelian theories are worked out for the lowest reducibility stages and ghost momentum ranks.  相似文献

A BRST quantization of second-class constraint algebras that avoids Dirac brackets is constructed, and the BRST operator is shown to be related to the BRST operator of first class algebra by a nonunitary canonical transformation. The transformation converts the second class algebra into an effective first class algebra with the help of an auxiliary second class algebra constructed from the dynamical Lagrange multipliers of the Dirac approach. The BRST invariant path integral for second class algebras is related to the path integral of the pertinent Dirac brackets, using the Parisi-Sourlas mechaism. As an application the possibility of string theories in subcritical dimensions is considered.  相似文献

The Faddeev-Popov determinant of the reparametrization ghosts of the closed bosonic string on bordered Riemann surfaces is investigated. It is found that the standard ghost action has to be supplemented by additional boundary terms. These additional terms lead to a nontrivial ghost transition amplitude. It is shown that boundary variations of ghost transition amplitudes are generated by the ghost Virasoro operators. The relevance of the boundary variation operator for string field theory is illustrated. A new interpretation of the BRST operator in terms of boundary variations is obtained and the BRST invariance of the transition amplitudes is demonstrated. A generalization of the Siegel gauge of second quantized closed bosonic string field theory is presented.  相似文献

We discuss construction of the BRST operator for the bosonic closed string theory on an arbitrary Riemann surface of genus g>1. Using the BRST operator we prove the decoupling of the bosonic spurious physical states in general.  相似文献

In this paper the BRST formalism for topological field theories is studied in a mathematical setting. The BRST operator is obtained as a member of a one parameter family of operators connecting the Weil model and the Cartan model for equivariant cohomology. Furthermore, the BRST operator is identified as the sum of an equivariant derivation and its Fourier transform. Using this, the Mathai-Quillen representative for the Thom class of associated vector bundles is obtained as the Fourier transform of a simple BRST closed element.Supported by the SV FOM/SMC Mathematical Physics, The Netherlands  相似文献

We write the gauge fixed action which arises in the quantization of Witten's string field theory in a linear gauge, in a form which applies to both the superstring and the bosonic string. The corresponding BRST transformation is nilpotent only on-shell. We construct also an off-shell nilpotent BRST transformation which formally leaves invariant the quantum effective action. This BRST transformation has a geometrical interpretation which could allow to describe the gauge anomalies of the superstring field theory as the nontrivial cohomology of the BRST charge via the Wess-Zumino consistency condition.  相似文献

We localize a previously established nonlocal BRST invariance of the Gribov–Zwanziger (GZ) action by the introduction of additional fields. We obtain a modified GZ action with a corresponding local, albeit not nilpotent, BRST invariance. We show that correlation functions of the original elementary GZ fields do not change upon evaluation with the modified partition function. We discuss that for vanishing Gribov mass, we are brought back to the original Yang–Mills theory with standard BRST invariance.  相似文献

The infinitesimal symmetries of a fully decomposed non-Abelian gerbe can be generated in terms of a nilpotent BRST operator, which is here constructed. The appearing fields find a natural interpretation in terms of the universal gerbe, a generalisation of the universal bundle. We comment on the construction of observables in the arising Topological Quantum Field Theory. It is also shown how the BRST operator and the trace part of a suitably truncated set of fields on the non-Abelian gerbe reduce directly to the coboundary operator and the pertinent cochains of the underlying ?ech–de Rham complex.  相似文献

We study the renormalizability of (massive) topological QCD based on the algebraic BRST technique by adopting a noncovariant Landau type gauge and making use of the full topological superalgebra. The most general local counter terms are determined and it is shown that in the presence of central charges the BRST cohomology remains trivial. By imposing an additional set of stability constraints it is proven that the matter action of topological QCD is perturbatively finite.  相似文献

In this paper we construct a (2,2) dimensional string theory with manifest N = 1 spacetime supersymmetry. We use Berkovits' approach of augmenting the spacetime supercoordinates by the conjugate momenta for the fermionic variables. The worldsheet symmetry algebra is a twisted and truncated “small” N = 4 superconformal algebra. The realisation of the symmetry algebra is reducible with an infinite order of reducibility. We study the physical states of the theory by two different methods. In one of them, we identify a subset of irreducible constraints, which is by itself critical. We construct the BRST operator for the irreducible constraints, and study the cohomology and interactions. This method breaks the SO(2,2) spacetime symmetry of the original reducible theory. In another approach, we study the theory in a fully covariant manner, which involves the introduction of infinitely many ghosts for ghosts.  相似文献

By means of a generalized quartet mechanism we show in a model independent way that a BRST quantization on an inner product space leads to physical states of the form ph〉 = exp [Q, ψ]ph〉0 where Q is the nilpotent BRST operator, ψ a hermitian fermionic gauge-fixing operator, and ph〉o BRST invariant states determined by a hermitian set of BRST doublets in involution. ph〉0 does not belong to an inner product space although ph〉 does. Since the BRST quartets are split into two sets of hermitian BRST doublets there are two choices for ph〉0 and the corresponding ψ. When applied to general, both irreducible and reducible, gauge theories of arbitrary rank within the BFV formulation we find that ph〉0 are trivial BRST invariant states which only depend on the matter variables for one set of solutions, and for the other set ph〉0 are solutions of a Dirac quantization. This generalizes previous Lie group solutions obtained by means of a bigrading.  相似文献

The BRST invariant, supersymmetric N-string vertex which applies to both, the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sector of the superstring is formulated using the vertex operator for the emission of a superstring. It is shown that the N-superstring vertex thus obtained is cyclic symmetric when GSO projected on-shell states and operators for the external strings are applied. The constraint equations of this vertex and their singularity structure are examined and we show that this vertex also has the required property of a transition operator. We also give a proof of its BRST invariance and supersymmetry.  相似文献

We consider effective actions of the cosmological Friedmann–Robertson–Walker (FRW) models and discuss their fermionic rigid BRST invariance. Further, we demonstrate the finite field-dependent BRST transformations as a limiting case of continuous field-dependent BRST transformations described in terms of continuous parameter κκ. The Jacobian under such finite field-dependent BRST transformations is computed explicitly, which amounts an extra piece in the effective action within functional integral. We show that for a particular choice of a parameter the finite field-dependent BRST transformation maps the generating functional for FRW models from one gauge to another.  相似文献

The main limitations of string field theory arise because its present formulation requires a background representing a classical solution, a background defined by a strictly conformally invariant theory. Here we sketch a construction for a gauge-invariant string field action around non-conformal backgrounds. The construction makes no reference to any conformal theory. Its two-dimensional field-theoretic aspect is based on a generalized BRST operator satisfying a set of Weyl descent equations. Its geometric aspect uses a complex of moduli spaces of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds having ordinary punctures, and organized by the number of special punctures which goes from zero to infinity. In this complex there is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra that includes naturally the operator which adds one special puncture. We obtain a classical field equation that appears to relax the condition of conformal invariance usually taken to define classical string backgrounds.  相似文献

A preliminary discussion on the importance of the contact terms in relation with the existence of many string vacua is presented. The problem of the BRST invariance of the string states transition amplitudes is considered in the sigma model approach to the string. It is shown that the BRST invariance is controlled by a gravitational (Diff) anomaly, and its connections with the standard Virasoro constraints are illustrated. The tachyon amplitudes are analysed and the BRST invariant dilaton vertex operator for non flat world-sheet is constructed.  相似文献

We first analyse the anti-BRST and double BRST structures of a certain higher derivative theory that has been known to possess BRST symmetry associated with its higher derivative structure. We discuss the invariance of this theory under shift symmetry in the Batalin–Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. We show that the action for this theory can be written in a manifestly extended BRST invariant manner in superspace formalism using one Grassmann coordinate. It can also be written in a manifestly extended BRST invariant manner and on-shell manifestly extended anti-BRST invariant manner in superspace formalism using two Grassmann coordinates.  相似文献

A BRST treatment of translational symmetry on flat manifolds, where torsion does not vanish, displays well-known features of differential geometry. In particular the covariant exterior derivative operator is identified as the BRST operator corresponding to translational symmetry. Its nilpotency is due to vanishing curvature on the manifold.  相似文献

We show that the conventional action for interacting open superstring field theory is contained in a purely cubic action which does not depend on the background induced by the super BRST charge.  相似文献
