We propose a decomposition algorithm for a special class of nonconvex mixed integer nonlinear programming problems which have an assignment constraint. If the assignment decisions are decoupled from the remaining constraints of the optimization problem, we propose to use a column enumeration approach. The master problem is a partitioning problem whose objective function coefficients are computed via subproblems. These problems can be linear, mixed integer linear, (non-)convex nonlinear, or mixed integer nonlinear. However, the important property of the subproblems is that we can compute their exact global optimum quickly. The proposed technique will be illustrated solving a cutting problem with optimum nonlinear programming subproblems.  相似文献

We study the structure of dual optimization problems associated with linear constraints, bounds on the variables, and separable cost. We show how the separability of the dual cost function is related to the sparsity structure of the linear equations. As a result, techniques for ordering sparse matrices based on nested dissection or graph partitioning can be used to decompose a dual optimization problem into independent subproblems that could be solved in parallel. The performance of a multilevel implementation of the Dual Active Set algorithm is compared with CPLEX Simplex and Barrier codes using Netlib linear programming test problems.   相似文献

This paper describes the details of a successful application where an integer programming and evolutionary hybrid algorithm was used to solve a bus driver duty optimization problem. The task is NP-hard, therefore theoretically optimal solutions can only be calculated for very small problem instances. Our aim is to obtain solutions of good quality within reasonable time limits. We first applied an integer programming approach to a set partitioning problem. The model was solved with a column generation algorithm in a branch and bound scheme. In order to solve larger real-life problems, we have combined the integer programming method with a greedy 1+1 steady state evolutionary algorithm. The resulting hybrid algorithm was capable of providing near-optimal solutions within reasonable timescales to larger instances of the bus driver scheduling problem. We present the results and running times of our algorithm in detail, as well as possible directions of future improvements.  相似文献

Nested Partitions Method for Stochastic Optimization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The nested partitions (NP) method is a recently proposed new alternative for global optimization. Primarily aimed at problems with large but finite feasible regions, the method employs a global sampling strategy that is continuously adapted via a partitioning of the feasible region. In this paper we adapt the original NP method to stochastic optimization where the performance is estimated using simulation. We prove asymptotic convergence of the new method and present a numerical example to illustrate its potential.  相似文献

In solving certain optimization problems, the corresponding Lagrangian dual problem is often solved simply because in these problems the dual problem is easier to solve than the original primal problem. Another reason for their solution is the implication of the weak duality theorem which suggests that under certain conditions the optimal dual function value is smaller than or equal to the optimal primal objective value. The dual problem is a special case of a bilevel programming problem involving Lagrange multipliers as upper-level variables and decision variables as lower-level variables. Another interesting aspect of dual problems is that both lower and upper-level optimization problems involve only box constraints and no other equality of inequality constraints. In this paper, we propose a coevolutionary dual optimization (CEDO) algorithm for co-evolving two populations—one involving Lagrange multipliers and other involving decision variables—to find the dual solution. On 11 test problems taken from the optimization literature, we demonstrate the efficacy of CEDO algorithm by comparing it with a couple of nested smooth and nonsmooth algorithms and a couple of previously suggested coevolutionary algorithms. The performance of CEDO algorithm is also compared with two classical methods involving nonsmooth (bundle) optimization methods. As a by-product, we analyze the test problems to find their associated duality gap and classify them into three categories having zero, finite or infinite duality gaps. The development of a coevolutionary approach, revealing the presence or absence of duality gap in a number of commonly-used test problems, and efficacy of the proposed coevolutionary algorithm compared to usual nested smooth and nonsmooth algorithms and other existing coevolutionary approaches remain as the hallmark of the current study.  相似文献

In this paper, a parallel asynchronous information algorithm for solving multidimensional Lipschitz global optimization problems, where times for evaluating the objective function can be different from point to point, is proposed. This method uses the nested optimization scheme and a new parallel asynchronous global optimization method for solving core univariate subproblems generated by the nested scheme. The properties of the scheme related to parallel computations are investigated. Global convergence conditions for the new method and theoretical conditions of speed up, which can be reached by using asynchronous parallelization in comparison with the pure sequential case, are established. Numerical experiments comparing sequential, synchronous, and asynchronous algorithms are also reported.  相似文献

The scheduling and rostering of personnel is a problem that occurs in many organizations. Aircrew scheduling has attracted considerable attention with many heuristic methods being proposed, but in recent times set partitioning optimization methods have become more popular. The aircrew rostering problem is discussed and formulated as a generalized set partitioning model. Because of the extremely large optimization models that are generated in practical situations, some special computational techniques have been developed to produce solutions efficiently. These techniques are used to solve problems arising from an airline application in which set partitioning models with more than 650 constraints and 200 000 binary variables are generated. The solutions are produced on a Motorola 68020 microprocessor in little more than three hours.  相似文献

Stochastic programs with continuous variables are often solved using a cutting plane method similar to Benders' partitioning algorithm. However, mixed 0–1 integer programs are also solved using a similar procedure along with enumeration. This similarity is exploited in this paper to solve two stage linear programs under uncertainty where the first stage variables are 0–1. Such problems often arise in capital investment. A network investment application is given which includes as a special case a coal transportation problem.  相似文献

In this paper, a real coded genetic algorithm named MI-LXPM is proposed for solving integer and mixed integer constrained optimization problems. The proposed algorithm is a suitably modified and extended version of the real coded genetic algorithm, LXPM, of Deep and Thakur [K. Deep, M. Thakur, A new crossover operator for real coded genetic algorithms, Applied Mathematics and Computation 188 (2007) 895-912; K. Deep, M. Thakur, A new mutation operator for real coded genetic algorithms, Applied Mathematics and Computation 193 (2007) 211-230]. The algorithm incorporates a special truncation procedure to handle integer restrictions on decision variables along with a parameter free penalty approach for handling constraints. Performance of the algorithm is tested on a set of twenty test problems selected from different sources in literature, and compared with the performance of an earlier application of genetic algorithm and also with random search based algorithm, RST2ANU, incorporating annealing concept. The proposed MI-LXPM outperforms both the algorithms in most of the cases which are considered.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a general but smooth global optimization strategy for nonlinear multilevel programming problems with polyhedral constraints. At each decision level successive convex relaxations are applied over the non-convex terms in combination with a multi-parametric programming approach. The proposed algorithm reaches the approximate global optimum in a finite number of steps through the successive subdivision of the optimization variables that contribute to the non-convexity of the problem and partitioning of the parameter space. The method is implemented and tested for a variety of bilevel, trilevel and fifth level problems which have non-convexity formulation at their inner levels.  相似文献

Two basic problems in reliability-based structural optimization   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Optimization of structures with respect to performance, weight or cost is a well-known application of mathematical optimization theory. However optimization of structures with respect to weight or cost under probabilistic reliability constraints or optimization with respect to reliability under cost/weight constraints has been subject of only very few studies. The difficulty in using probabilistic constraints or reliability targets lies in the fact that modern reliability methods themselves are formulated as a problem of optimization. In this paper two special formulations based on the so-called first-order reliability method (FORM) are presented. It is demonstrated that both problems can be solved by a one-level optimization problem, at least for problems in which structural failure is characterized by a single failure criterion. Three examples demonstrate the algorithm indicating that the proposed formulations are comparable in numerical effort with an approach based on semi-infinite programming but are definitely superior to a two-level formulation.  相似文献

In this paper we study a method for global optimization of increasing positively homogeneous functions over the unit simplex, which is a version of the cutting angle method. Some properties of the auxiliary subproblem are studied and a special algorithm for its solution is proposed. A cutting angle method based on this algorithm allows one to find an approximate solution of some problems of global optimization with 50 variables. Results of numerical experiments are discussed.  相似文献

The problem (P) addressed here is a special set partitioning problem with two additional non-trivial constraints. A Lagrangean Relaxation (LRu) is proposed to provide a lower bound to the optimal solution to this problem. This Lagrangean relaxation is accomplished by a subgradient optimization procedure which solves at each iteration a special 0–1 knapsack problem (KP-k). We give two procedures to solve (KP-k), namely an implicity enumeration algorithm and a column generation method. The approach is promising for it provides feasible integer solutions to the side constraints that will hopefully be optimal to most of the instances of the problem (P). Properties of the feasible solutions to (KP-k) are highlighted and it is shown that the linear programming relaxation to this problem has a worst case time bound of order O(n3).  相似文献

Over the last few decades several methods have been proposed for handling functional constraints while solving optimization problems using evolutionary algorithms (EAs). However, the presence of equality constraints makes the feasible space very small compared to the entire search space. As a consequence, the handling of equality constraints has long been a difficult issue for evolutionary optimization methods. This paper presents a Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm (HEA) for solving optimization problems with both equality and inequality constraints. In HEA, we propose a new local search technique with special emphasis on equality constraints. The basic concept of the new technique is to reach a point on the equality constraint from the current position of an individual solution, and then explore on the constraint landscape. We believe this new concept will influence the future research direction for constrained optimization using population based algorithms. The proposed algorithm is tested on a set of standard benchmark problems. The results show that the proposed technique works very well on those benchmark problems.  相似文献

We propose a column generation based exact decomposition algorithm for the problem of scheduling n jobs with an unrestrictively large common due date on m identical parallel machines to minimize total weighted earliness and tardiness. We first formulate the problem as an integer program, then reformulate it, using Dantzig–Wolfe decomposition, as a set partitioning problem with side constraints. Based on this set partitioning formulation, a branch and bound exact solution algorithm is developed for the problem. In the branch and bound tree, each node is the linear relaxation problem of a set partitioning problem with side constraints. This linear relaxation problem is solved by column generation approach where columns represent partial schedules on single machines and are generated by solving two single machine subproblems. Our computational results show that this decomposition algorithm is capable of solving problems with up to 60 jobs in reasonable cpu time.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a variation of the bin packing problem in which bins of different types have different costs and capacities. Furthermore, each bin has to be filled at least to a certain level, which depends on its type. We present a set partitioning formulation and an exact optimization algorithm which exploits column generation and specialized heuristics. We compare our algorithm with the general purpose solver ILOG CPLEX, running on two compact ILP formulations and we report on experimental results on instances we have generated from data-sets for the variable size bin packing problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a novel sequential convex bilevel programming algorithm for the numerical solution of structured nonlinear min–max problems which arise in the context of semi-infinite programming. Here, our main motivation are nonlinear inequality constrained robust optimization problems. In the first part of the paper, we propose a conservative approximation strategy for such nonlinear and non-convex robust optimization problems: under the assumption that an upper bound for the curvature of the inequality constraints with respect to the uncertainty is given, we show how to formulate a lower-level concave min–max problem which approximates the robust counterpart in a conservative way. This approximation turns out to be exact in some relevant special cases and can be proven to be less conservative than existing approximation techniques that are based on linearization with respect to the uncertainties. In the second part of the paper, we review existing theory on optimality conditions for nonlinear lower-level concave min–max problems which arise in the context of semi-infinite programming. Regarding the optimality conditions for the concave lower level maximization problems as a constraint of the upper level minimization problem, we end up with a structured mathematical program with complementarity constraints (MPCC). The special hierarchical structure of this MPCC can be exploited in a novel sequential convex bilevel programming algorithm. We discuss the surprisingly strong global and locally quadratic convergence properties of this method, which can in this form neither be obtained with existing SQP methods nor with interior point relaxation techniques for general MPCCs. Finally, we discuss the application fields and implementation details of the new method and demonstrate the performance with a numerical example.  相似文献

Integer programming problems with a concave cost function are often encountered in optimization models involving economics of scale. In this paper, we propose an efficient exact algorithm for solving concave knapsack problems. The algorithm consists of an iterative process between finding lower and upper bounds by linearly underestimating the objective function and performing domain cut and partition by exploring the special structure of the problem. The lower bound is improved iteratively via cutting and partitioning the domain. This iteration process converges to the optimality in a finite number of steps. Promising computational results are reported for large-scale concave knapsack problems with up to 1200 integer variables. Comparison results with other existing methods in the literature are also presented. *Research supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 79970107 and 10271073,and the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong under Grant CUHK 4214/01E.  相似文献

A new algorithm for global optimization of costly nonlinear continuous problems is presented in this paper. The algorithm is based on the scatter search metaheuristic, which has recently proved to be efficient for solving combinatorial and nonlinear optimization problems. A kriging-based prediction method has been coupled to the main optimization routine in order to discard the evaluation of solutions that are not likely to provide high quality function values. This makes the algorithm suitable for the optimization of computationally costly problems, as is illustrated in its application to two benchmark problems and its comparison with other algorithms.  相似文献

An effective algorithm is described for solving the general constrained parameter optimization problem. The method is quasi-second-order and requires only function and gradient information. An exterior point penalty function method is used to transform the constrained problem into a sequence of unconstrained problems. The penalty weightr is chosen as a function of the pointx such that the sequence of optimization problems is computationally easy. A rank-one optimization algorithm is developed that takes advantage of the special properties of the augmented performance index. The optimization algorithm accounts for the usual difficulties associated with discontinuous second derivatives of the augmented index. Finite convergence is exhibited for a quadratic performance index with linear constraints; accelerated convergence is demonstrated for nonquadratic indices and nonlinear constraints. A computer program has been written to implement the algorithm and its performance is illustrated in fourteen test problems.  相似文献
