Effective surface tension of liquid marbles was measured by three independent experimental techniques: vibration, shape analysis, and maximal marble height. Marbles obtained with various powders: polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, and lycopodium, were studied. The effective surface tension depends strongly on the kind of powder coating the marble. The capillary interaction between particles coating the marble was involved for qualitative interpretation of the reported data.  相似文献

The behavior of liquid marbles encapsulated with various powders, immersed in oil, and exposed to a uniform DC field was investigated. At some critical value of the electric field, the Taylor instability of the marble shape took place, accompanied by the appearance of a cone and jetting a small droplet. The squared critical electric field was linear dependent on inverse of the size parameter of the marble. In some cases, the extrapolation of this linear dependence to the zero field gave the finite value of the spherical marble radius corresponding to the Rayleigh limit that meant that the marbles were charged. Lycopodium-coated marbles remained neutral under the action of a DC field, as well as a pure water droplet. Therefore, charging marbles is determined by their powder coverage. The data on effective surface tension at marble–oil interfaces were extracted from the above linear dependence for the uncharged marble. The effective surface tension was measured in parallel by the capillary rise method.  相似文献

Transport of a water droplet on a solid surface can be achieved by differentially modifying the contact angles at either side of the droplet using capacitive charging of the solid-liquid interface (i.e., electrowetting-on-dielectric) to create a driving force. Improved droplet mobility can be achieved by modifying the surface topography to enhance the effects of a hydrophobic surface chemistry and so achieve an almost complete roll-up into a superhydrophobic droplet where the contact angle is greater than 150 degrees . When electrowetting is attempted on such a surface, an electrocapillary pressure arises which causes water penetration into the surface features and an irreversible conversion to a state in which the droplet loses its mobility. Irreversibility occurs because the surface tension of the liquid does not allow the liquid to retract from these fixed surface features on removal of the actuating voltage. In this work, we show that this irreversibility can be overcome by attaching the solid surface features to the liquid surface to create a liquid marble. The solid topographic surface features then become a conformable "skin" on the water droplet both enabling it to become highly mobile and providing a reversible liquid marble-on-solid system for electrowetting. In our system, hydrophobic silica particles and hydrophobic grains of lycopodium are used as the skin. In the region corresponding to the solid-marble contact area, the liquid marble can be viewed as a liquid droplet resting on the attached solid grains (or particles) in a manner similar to a superhydrophobic droplet resting upon posts fixed on a solid substrate. When a marble is placed on a flat solid surface and electrowetting performed it spreads but with the water remaining effectively suspended on the grains as it would if the system were a droplet of water on a surface consisting of solid posts. When the electrowetting voltage is removed, the surface tension of the water droplet causes it to ball up from the surface but carrying with it the conformable skin. A theoretical basis for this electrowetting of a liquid marble is developed using a surface free energy approach.  相似文献

The formation of liquid marbles was studied in the situation where hydrophobic particles coating the marbles "come from air". Droplets of water/ethanol solutions of various concentrations were coated with three kinds of powders: polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride and polyethylene. We established that there exists a critical concentration of ethanol, and correspondingly a critical surface tension of the water/ethanol solution allowing formation of liquid marbles. A critical surface tension depends on the kind of the powder. In parallel, wetting transitions of water/ethanol solutions were studied on the layers of the same polymer powders. The onset of wetting transitions on the powders took place at the concentrations of ethanol coinciding with those enabling the formation of liquid marbles. Wetting transitions stipulate the formation of liquid marbles when a droplet is deposited on a layer of hydrophobic powder. This assumption was validated by the experiments performed with di-iodomethane and glycerol.  相似文献

The capillary rise and Wilhelmy plate methods have been used to study the "surface tension" of water marbles encapsulated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powders of 1-, 35-, and 100-μm particle size. With the capillary rise technique, a glass capillary tube was inserted into a water marble to measure the capillary rise of the water. The Laplace pressure exerted by the water marble was directly measured by comparing the heights of the capillary rise from the marble and from a flat water surface in a beaker. An equation based on Marmur's model was proposed to calculate the water marble surface tension. This method does not require the water contact angle with the supporting solid surface to be considered; it is therefore a simple but efficient method for determining liquid marble surface tension. The Wilhelmy method was used to measure the surface tension of a flat water surface covered by PTFE powder. This method offers a new angle for investigating liquid marble shell properties. A discussion on the nature and the realistic magnitude of liquid marble surface tension is offered.  相似文献

Water and glycerol marbles coated with various powders and immersed in organic liquids gave rise to water-in-oil and glycerol-in-oil Pickering-like emulsions. Non-polar oils such as polydimethylsiloxane, toluene, xylenes and chlorinated solvents supported the formation of emulsions, whereas polar liquids such as dimethylsulfoxide, N,N,-dimethylformamide, acetone and ethanol did not. It is demonstrated that there is a direct contact between a liquid filling the immersed marble and the surrounding liquid. A phenomenological theory of the marbles' sinking into emulsion is proposed.  相似文献

For the first time an overview of the available latest publications from the scientific and technical literature on surfactant ionic liquids is compiled. The methods of preparation, structural features, the most important physicochemical properties, and the areas of application of these substances are considered. Particular attention is paid to the data related to the properties of ionic liquids manifested at the interfaces. Applied properties of ionic liquid surfactants are demonstrated.  相似文献

The preparation and investigation of triplet photosensitizers designed to be preferentially soluble in room-temperature ionic liquids are reported. Photosensitizers prepared by covalent attachment of 1-methylimidazole to aryl ketones are soluble in ionic liquids and remain in the ionic liquid layer when the solution is extracted with an organic solvent. The photosensitized isomerization of trans-β-ionol to cis-β-ionol was efficiently carried out in ionic liquid solution with the product ionol being extracted and the sensitizer/ionic liquid mixture being re-used in additional photosensitization reactions. The scope and utility of the sensitizers in sensitizing other reactions are discussed.  相似文献

The manufacturing of water droplets wrapped with two different powders, carbon black (semiconductor) and polytetrafluoroethylene (dielectric), is presented. Droplets composed of two hemispheres (Janus droplets) characterized by various physical and chemical properties are reported first. Watermelon-like striped liquid marbles are reported. Janus droplets remained stable on solid and liquid supports and could be activated with an electric field.  相似文献

The ability to simulate the 3D structure of a human body is essential to increase the efficiency of drug development. In vivo conditions are significantly different in comparison to in vitro conditions. A standardly used cell monolayer on tissue culture plastic (2D cell culture) is not sufficient to simulate the transfer phenomena occurring in living organisms, therefore, cell growth in a 3D space is desired. Drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity could be tested on 3D cell aggregates called spheroids, decrease the use of animal models and accelerate the drug development. In this work, the formation of spheroids from HT-29 human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells was successfully achieved by means of the so-called liquid marbles, which are liquid droplets encapsulated by a hydrophobic powder. During the cultivation in the medium inside the liquid marbles, cells spontaneously formed spherical agglomerates (spheroids) without the need of any supporting scaffold. The study focused on the influence of different parameters—namely liquid marble volume, seeding cell density and time of cultivation—on the final yield and quality of spheroids. This work has shown that using liquid marbles as microbioreactors is a suitable method for the cultivation of HT-29 cells in the form of spheroids.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of two families of ionic liquid crystal dendrimers consisting of the ammonium salts of the commercially available poly(amidoamine) (G = 0-5) and poly(propylene imine) (G = 1-5) dendrimers and three long-chain carboxylic acids are reported. The liquid crystalline behavior was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing light optical microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The thermal stability of the ionic materials was further studied by NMR. Most of the dendrimers show lamellar mesomorphism, and two of them exhibit columnar mesomorphism. On the basis of the experimental results, we propose models both at the molecular level and in the mesophase for all the materials.  相似文献

In this article, a novel and simple microextraction method, termed ionic liquid/ionic liquid dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (IL/IL‐DLLME), has been designed and developed for the rapid enrichment and analysis of environmental pollutants. Instead of using hazardous organic solvents, two kinds of ILs, hydrophobic IL and hydrophilic IL, were used as extraction solvent and disperser solvent in IL/IL‐DLLME step, respectively. Permethrin and biphenthrin, two of the often‐used pyrethroid pesticides, were used as model compounds. Factors that may affect the enrichment efficiencies were investigated and optimized in detail. Under optimum conditions, permethrin and biphenthrin exhibited a wide linear relationship over the range 1–100 μg/L. For permethrin and biphenthrin, the precisions were 4.65–7.78%, and limits of detection were found to be 0.28 and 0.83 μg/L, respectively. Satisfactory results were achieved when the present method was applied to analyze the target compounds in real‐world water samples with spiked recoveries over the range 84.1–113.5%. All these facts indicated that IL/IL‐DLLME is a simple and rapid alternative for the enrichment and analysis of environmental pollutants and will have a wide application perspective in the future.  相似文献

Utilization of natural polymers has attracted increasing attention because of the consumption and over-exploitation of non-renewable resources, such as coal and oil. The development of green processing of cellulose, the most abundant biorenewable material on Earth, is urgent from the viewpoints of both sustainability and environmental protection. The discovery of the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids (ILs, salts which melt below 100 °C) provides new opportunities for the processing of this biopolymer, however, many fundamental and practical questions need to be answered in order to determine if this will ultimately be a green or sustainable strategy. In this critical review, the open fundamental questions regarding the interactions of cellulose with both the IL cations and anions in the dissolution process are discussed. Investigations have shown that the interactions between the anion and cellulose play an important role in the solvation of cellulose, however, opinions on the role of the cation are conflicting. Some researchers have concluded that the cations are hydrogen bonding to this biopolymer, while others suggest they are not. Our review of the available data has led us to urge the use of more chemical units of solubility, such as 'g cellulose per mole of IL' or 'mol IL per mol hydroxyl in cellulose' to provide more consistency in data reporting and more insight into the dissolution mechanism. This review will also assess the greenness and sustainability of IL processing of biomass, where it would seem that the choices of cation and anion are critical not only to the science of the dissolution, but to the ultimate 'greenness' of any process (142 references).  相似文献

Some organic solvents are highly toxic, flammable, and even explosive. In particular, high vapor pressures and toxicity of certain volatile organic solvents may cause significant environmental problems. Therefore, alternative solvents or media with tunable and versatile solvation properties for conducting chemical reactions and materials synthesis have been actively sought. Ionic liquids have numerous applications not only as environmentally benign reaction media, but also as catalysts and reagents. Due to the increase of environmental consciousness in chemical research and industry, the challenge for a sustainable environment calls for clean procedures that avoid the use of harmful organic solvents. Due to the special properties of ILs (ionic liquids) such as wide liquid range, good solvating ability, negligible vapor pressure, non-inflammability, non-volatility, environment friendly medium, high thermal stability, good stability in air and moisture, easy recycling and rate promoters etc. they are used in organic synthesis. Therefore, ionic liquids have attracted the attention of chemists and act as catalyst and reaction medium in organic reactions with high activity. Highly efficient methods are explored for the preparation of S-heterocycles with the application of ILs as catalyst and reaction medium.  相似文献

This paper shows that the dielectric anisotropy of conductivity in cells composed of nematic liquid crystal E7 (NLC-E7) is related to the fact that the diffusion constant (D) is greater in a cell with homeotropic alignment than in one with homogeneous alignment (D > D ). This behaviour can be understood by the study of the dielectric properties of the NLC based on the ionic hopping behaviour and on the analysis of the electrical conductivity in relation to the voltage applied.  相似文献
