Zirconia (yttria)–alumina ceramic nanocomposites were fabricated from different powders by spark plasma sintering (SPS). One powder was a commercially available nanocomposite powder TZP-3Y20A, consisting of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3-YSZ) reinforced with 20 wt% alumina, and the other, used as a comparison, was a conventional mechanically mixed powder 3YSZ-20A, a blend made of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia powder ZrO2 (3Y) and 20 wt% α-alumina powder. The effect of the sintering temperature on the densification, the sintering behavior, the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the composites was investigated. The results showed that the density increased with increasing sintering temperature, and thus, the mechanical properties were strengthened because of the increased densification. The nanocomposite powder TZP-3Y20A was easily sintered, and good mechanical properties were achieved as compared with the powder from the conventional mechanically mixed method, the maximum flexural strength and fracture toughness of which were 967 MPa and 5.27 MPa m1/2, respectively.  相似文献

Two-dimensional reduced graphene oxide–titania (RGO–TiO2) composites were prepared using a single-step hydrothermal method under various hydrothermal reaction conditions. The morphological and surface characteristics of the RGO–TiO2 composites and reference materials were determined. The RGO–TiO2 composites showed photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of two target pollutants that was superior to both pure TiO2 and RGO under fluorescent daylight lamp illumination. The photocatalytic activity of the RGO–TiO2 composite increased as the hydrothermal treatment time increased from 1 to 24 h, but then it decreased as the time increased to 36 h, which indicated the presence of an optimal treatment time. RGO–TiO2 composites activated by violet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) displayed lower decomposition efficiency than those activated by a daylight lamp, likely because of the lower light intensity of violet LEDs (0.2 mW/cm2) when compared with that of the daylight lamp (1.4 mW/cm2). However, the photocatalytic decomposition of the target pollutants using the RGO–TiO2 composite was more energy-efficient using the violet LEDs. The photocatalytic reaction rates increased as the residence time decreased, whereas the reverse was true for the decomposition efficiency.  相似文献

Nine square concrete columns including 6 CFRP/ECCs and 3 concrete columns are prepared, which have cross-section of 200 mm × 200 mm and height of 600 mm. The CFRP tubes with fibers oriented at hoop direction were manufactured to have 3 or 5 layers of CFRP with 10 mm, 20 mm, or 40 mm rounding corner radii at vertical edges. A 100 mm overlap in the direction of fibers was provided to ensure proper bond. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted to investigate the compressive behavior. It is evident that the CFRP tube confinement can improve the behavior of concrete core, in terms of axial compressive strength or axial deformability. Test results show that the stress-strain behavior of CFRP/ECCs vary with different confinement parameters, such as the number of confinement layers and the rounding corner radius.  相似文献

Blast resistant glazing systems typically use laminated glass to reduce the risk of flying glass debris in the event of an explosion. Laminated glass has one or more bonded polymer interlayers to retain glass fragments upon fracture. With good design, the flexibility of the interlayer and the adhesion between layers enable laminated glass to continue to resist blast after the glass layers fracture. This gives protection from significantly higher blast loads when compared to a monolithic pane. Full-scale open-air blast tests were performed on laminated glass containing a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer. Test windows of size 1.5 m × 1.2 m were secured to robust frames using structural silicone sealant. Blast loads were produced using charge masses of 15 kg and 30 kg (TNT equivalent) at distances of 10–16 m. Deflection and shape measurements of deforming laminated glass were obtained using high-speed digital image correlation. Measurements of loading at the joint, between the laminated glass and the frame, were obtained using strain gauges. The main failure mechanisms observed were the cohesive failure of the bonded silicone joint and delamination between the glass and interlayer at the pane edge. A new finite element model of laminated glass is developed and calibrated using laboratory based tests. Predictions from this model are compared against the experimental results.  相似文献

Numerical investigation of a transverse sonic jet injected into a supersonic crossflow was carried out using large-eddy simulation for a free-stream Mach number M = 1.6 and a Reynolds number Re = 1.38 × 105 based on the jet diameter. Effects of the jet-to-crossflow momentum ratio on various fundamental mechanisms dictating the intricate flow phenomena, including flow structures, turbulent characters and frequency behaviors, have been studied. The complex flow structures and the relevant flow features are discussed to exhibit the evolution of shock structures, vortical structures and jet shear layers. The strength of the bow shock increases and the sizes of the barrel shock and Mach disk also increase with increasing momentum ratio. Turbulent characters are clarified to be closely related to the flow structures. The jet penetration increases with the increase of the momentum ratio. Moreover, the dominant frequencies of the flow structures are obtained using spectral analysis. The results obtained in this letter provide physical insight in understanding the mechanisms relevant to this complex flow.  相似文献

The formation of shocks in plasmas created by short pulse laser irradiation (λ = 800 nm, I  1 × 1012 W cm?2) of semi-cylindrical cavities of different materials was studied combining visible and soft X-ray laser interferometry with simulations. The plasma rapidly converges near the axis to form a dense bright plasma focus. Later in time a long lasting bow shock is observed to develop outside the cavity, that is shown to arise from the collision of plasmas originating from within the cavity and the surrounding flat walls of the target. The shock is sustained for tens of nanoseconds by the continuous arrival of plasma ablated from the target walls. The plasmas created from the heavier target materials evolve more slowly, resulting in increased shock lifetimes.  相似文献

In the present study, a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) is employed to investigate the dynamic response of ice under uniaxial compression in the range of strain rates from 60 to 1400 s?1 and at initial test temperatures of ?10 and ?30 °C. The compressive strength of ice shows positive strain-rate sensitivity over the range of strain rates employed; a slight influence of ice microstructure is observed, but it is much less than that reported previously for ice deformation under quasi-static loading conditions [Schulson, E.M., IIiescu, D., Frott, A., 2005. Characterization of ice for return-to-flight of the space shuttle. Part 1 – Hard ice. NASA CR-2005-213643-Part 1]. Specimen thickness, within the range studied, was found to have little or no effect on the peak (failure) strength of ice, while lowering the test temperature from ?10 to ?30 °C had a considerable effect, with ice behaving stronger at the lower test temperature. Moreover, unlike in the case of uniaxial quasi-static compression of ice, the effect of specimen end-constraint during the high rate compression was found to be negligible. One important result of these experiments, which may have important implications in modeling ice impacts, involves the post “peak-stress” behavior of the ice in that the ice samples do not catastrophically lose their load carrying capacity even after the attainment of peak stress during dynamic compression. This residual (tail) strength of the damaged/fragmented ice is sizable, and in some cases is larger than the quasi-static compression strength reported for ice. Moreover, this residual strength is observed to be dependent on sample thickness and the strain rate, being higher for thinner samples and at higher strain-rates during dynamic compression.  相似文献

Fractures in natural rocks have an important effect on the strength and failure behavior of rock mass, which are often evaluated in rock engineering practice. The theoretical evaluation of mechanical behavior of fractured rock mass has no satisfactory answer due to the role of confining pressure and crack geometry. Therefore, in this paper, conventional triaxial compression experiments were carried out to study the strength and failure behavior of marble samples with two pre-existing closed cracks in non-overlapping geometry. Based on the experimental results of a number of triaxial compression tests, the effect of crack coalescence on the axial supporting capacity and deformation property were investigated with different confining pressures. The results show that intact samples and flawed samples (marble with pre-existing cracks) have different deformation properties after peak stress, which change from brittleness to plasticity and ductility with the increase of confining pressure. The peak strength and failure mode are found depending not only on the geometry of flaw, but also on the confining pressure. The strength of flawed samples shows distinct non-linear behavior, which is in a better agreement with non-linear Hoek–Brown criterion than linear Mohr–Coulomb criterion. For a kind of rock that has been evaluated as a Hoek–Brown material, a new evaluation criterion is put forward by adopting optimal approximation polynomial theory, which can be used to confirm more precisely the strength parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle) of flawed samples. For intact samples, the marble leads to typical shear failure mode with a single fracture surface under different confining pressures, while for flawed samples, under uniaxial compression and a lower confining pressure (σ3 = 10 MPa), tests for coarse and medium marble (the coarse and medium refer to the grain size) exhibit three basic failure modes, i.e., tensile mode, shear mode, and mixed mode (tensile and shear). Shear mode is associated with lower strength behavior. However, under higher confining pressures (σ3 = 30 MPa), for coarse marble, the axial supporting capacity is not related to the geometry of flaw. The friction among crystal grains determines the strength behavior of coarse marble. For medium marble, the failure mode and deformation behavior are dependent on the crack coalescence in the sample. The present research provides increased understanding of the fundamental nature of rock failure under conventional triaxial compression.  相似文献

Surface Evolver software was used to create the three-dimensional geometry of a Kelvin open-cell foam, to simulate that of polyurethane flexible foams. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with 3D elements was used to model large compressive deformation in the [0 0 1] and [1 1 1] directions, using cyclic boundary conditions when necessary, treating the polyurethane as an elastic or elastic–plastic material. The predicted foam Young’s moduli in the [0 0 1] direction are double those of foams with uniform Plateau border cross-section edges, for the same foam density and material properties. For compression in the [1 1 1] direction, the normalized Young’s modulus increases from 0.9 to 1.1 with foam relative density, and the predicted stress–strain relationship can have a plateau, even for a linearly-elastic polymer. As the foam density increases, the predicted effects of material plasticity become larger. For foam of relative density 0.028, edge-to-edge contact is predicted to occur at a 66% strain for [1 1 1] direction compression. The foam is predicted to contract laterally when the [1 1 1] direction compressive strain exceeds 25%.  相似文献

A facile and green method to prepare Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles supported on porous glass beads is reported. An ion exchange process and subsequent calcination yielded Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with a mean size of 4.8 ± 0.3 nm. The nanoparticles were dispersed on the surface of porous glass beads. The addition of Ce enhanced the visible light absorption of the TiO2 nanoparticles in the 400–500 nm spectral window. The band gap of the as-prepared catalyst was 2.80 eV. The Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles immobilized on porous glass beads exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the visible-light-degradation of methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB); with rate constants of 0.095 and 0.230 min−1; respectively. The effects of Ce dosage; reaction duration; and initial solution pH on the conversion of MO and RhB dyes were investigated. The green synthesis and favorable photocatalytic activity makes the Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles immobilized on porous glass an attractive alternative for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants.  相似文献

Micro/nanocapsules of urea–formaldehyde resin loaded with linseed oil, which are a self-healing agent in glass flake epoxy anti-corrosion paint, were prepared using a combination of ultrasonic homogenization and in-situ polymerization. The main objective of this study was to model and optimize the microencapsulation process. Five-level central composite design was used to design, model, and optimize the microencapsulation process. A quadratic model was constructed to show the dependency of the percentage of encapsulated linseed oil and capsule size, as model responses, on the studied independent variables (the rotational speed of the agitator and the power and duration of sonication). Analysis of variance showed that all of the variables have significant effects on the encapsulated linseed oil percentage, while the rotational speed of the agitator and sonication time is effective variables for controlling the capsule size. Under the determined optimum conditions, a maximum encapsulated linseed oil percentage (ELO%) of 93.9% and a minimum micro/nanocapsule size of 0.574 μm were achieved at 594 rpm agitation, 350 W sonication power, and 3 min sonication time. Validation of the model was performed. The percentage relative errors between the predicted and experimental values of the ELO% and micro/nanocapsule size are 1.28% and 3.66%, respectively. The efficacy of the optimum micro/nanocapsules in healing cracks in a glass flake epoxy paint and corrosion protection was investigated by the salt spray test and Tafel polarization technique.  相似文献

Graphene/hierarchy structure manganese dioxide (GN/MnO2) composites were synthesized using a simple microwave-hydrothermal method. The properties of the prepared composites were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The electrochemical performances of the composites were analyzed using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS), and chronopotentiometry. The results showed that GN/MnO2 (10 wt% graphene) displayed a specific capacitance of 244 F/g at a current density of 100 mA/g. An excellent cyclic stability was obtained with a capacity retention of approximately 94.3% after 500 cycles in a 1 mol/L Li2SO4 solution. The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the hierarchy structure of the manganese dioxide, which can enlarge the interface between the active materials and the electrolyte. The preparation route provides a new approach for hierarchy structure graphene composites; this work could be readily extended to the preparation of other graphene-based composites with different structures for use in energy storage devices.  相似文献

We investigate the damping enhancement in a class of biomimetic staggered composites via a combination of design, modeling, and experiment. In total, three kinds of staggered composites are designed by mimicking the structure of bone and nacre. These composite designs are realized by 3D printing a rigid plastic and a viscous elastomer simultaneously. Greatly-enhanced energy dissipation in the designed composites is observed from both the experimental results and theoretical prediction. The designed polymer composites have loss modulus up to ~500 MPa, higher than most of the existing polymers. In addition, their specific loss modulus (up to 0.43 km2/s2) is among the highest of damping materials. The damping enhancement is attributed to the large shear deformation of the viscous soft matrix and the large strengthening effect from the rigid inclusion phase.  相似文献

Simulations of the bearing capacity and shear strength of regolith under Earth’s gravity produce different results from those under low gravity. A low-gravity simulation device was developed in this study, and an internal stress model of regolith simulant was established to correct the errors. The model revealed additional force on both shear plane in the shear test and the press plate area in the pressure–sinkage test. The sinkage and shear test results showed that low gravity decreased the deformable index n, frictional modulus kφ and cohesion c, whereas there were no obvious changes to the cohesive modulus kc and internal friction angle φ. The sinkage generally increased as the gravity decreased under a consistent normal load larger than 50 N, but when the wheel load was lower than 50 N, the sinkage of the TYII-1 simulant was larger under 1 G than 1/6 G. Gravity had little effect on the shear strength of the regolith. However, the tractive thrust of the TYII-1 simulant was lower under 1/6 G than 1 G. The smaller difference was due to differences in the way the soils responded to changes in the gravity level for the TYII-2 simulant.  相似文献

The two-phase flow of a hydrophobic ionic liquid and water was studied in capillaries made of three different materials (two types of Teflon, FEP and Tefzel, and glass) with sizes between 200 μm and 270 μm. The ionic liquid was 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}amide, with density and viscosity of 1420 kg m−3 and 0.041 kg m−1 s−1, respectively. Flow patterns and pressure drop were measured for two inlet configurations (T- and Y-junction), for total flow rates of 0.065–214.9 cm3 h−1 and ionic liquid volume fractions from 0.05 to 0.8. The continuous phase in the glass capillary depended on the fluid that initially filled the channel. When water was introduced first, it became the continuous phase with the ionic liquid forming plugs or a mixture of plugs and drops within it. In the Teflon microchannels, the order that fluids were introduced did not affect the results and the ionic liquid was always the continuous phase. The main patterns observed were annular, plug, and drop flow. Pressure drop in the Teflon microchannels at a constant ionic liquid flow rate, was found to increase as the ionic liquid volume fraction decreased, and was always higher than the single phase ionic liquid value at the same flow rate as in the two-phase mixture. However, in the glass microchannel during plug flow with water as the continuous phase, pressure drop for a constant ionic liquid flow rate was always lower than the single phase ionic liquid value. A modified plug flow pressure drop model using a correlation for film thickness derived for the current fluids pair showed very good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Momentum transfer from shock waves (SWs) of various intensity (from 0.05 MPa to 0.5 MPa in amplitude) to water containing air bubbles 2.5 to 4 mm of mean diameter is studied both experimentally and by means of numerical simulation. Experiments are performed in a vertical shock tube of a 50 × 100 mm2 rectangular cross section consisting of a 495-mm long high-pressure section (HPS), 495-mm long low-pressure section (LPS), and 990 mm long test section (TS) equipped with an air bubbler and filled with water. Experiments have shown that as the initial gas volume fraction in water increases from 0 to 0.3 the momentum imparted in bubbly water by SWs increases monotonically, gradually levelling off at an air volume fraction of about 0.30. The experimental data are confirmed by two-dimensional (2D) simulation of SW propagation in bubbly water in terms of the SW velocity versus the air content, pressure profiles, as well as liquid and gas velocity behind the shock front.  相似文献

Dynamic response of a cellular sandwich core material, balsa wood, is investigated over its entire density spectrum ranging from 55 to 380 kg/m3. Specimens were compression loaded along the grain direction at a nominal strain rate of 3 × 103 s−1 using a modified Kolsky (split Hopkinson) bar. The dynamic data are discussed and compared to those of quasi-static experiments reported in a previous study (Mech. Mater. 35 (2003) 523). Results show that while the initial failure stress is very sensitive to the rate of loading, plateau (crushing) stress remains unaffected by the strain rate. As in quasi-static loading, buckling and kink band formation were identified to be two major failure modes in dynamic loading as well. However, the degree of dynamic strength enhancement was observed to be different for these two distinct modes. Kinematics of deformation of the observed failure modes and associated micro-inertial effects are modeled to explain this different behavior. Specific energy dissipation capacity of balsa wood was computed and is found to be comparable with those of fiber-reinforced polymer composites.  相似文献

In this paper, interlaminar crack initiation and propagation under mode-I with static and fatigue loading of a composite material are experimentally assessed for different test temperatures. The material under study is made of a 3501-6 epoxy matrix reinforced with AS4 unidirectional carbon fibres, with a symmetric laminate configuration [0°]16/S. In the experimental programme, DCB specimens were tested under static and fatigue loading. Based on the results obtained from static tests, fatigue tests were programmed to analyse the mode-I fatigue behaviour, so the necessary number of cycles was calculated for initiation and propagation of the crack at the different temperatures. GN curves were determined under fatigue loading, N being the number of cycles at which delamination begins for a given energy release rate. GICmaxa, aN and da/dNa curves were also determined for different Gcr rates (90%, 85%, 75%, etc.) and different test temperatures: 90 °C, 50 °C, 20 °C, 0 °C, ?30 °C and ?60 °C.  相似文献

A fundamental step in the production of an industrial catalyst is its crushing strength assessment. Limited literature exists in which the strength reliability of supported catalysts is investigated from production to their application in a reactor. In this work, cylindrical supports were prepared by pelletizing high porosity γ-alumina powder, and Cu–Zn/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation of the pelletized γ-alumina supports with an aqueous solution of copper and zinc nitrates. The support-forming variables, such as binder concentration, compaction pressure, calcination temperature, and drying procedure were investigated. The Weibull method was used to analyze the crushing strength data of the supports, and the fresh and used catalysts before and after the low-temperature water gas shift reaction. Support formation at a 50 wt% binder concentration, 1148 MPa compaction pressure, 500 °C calcination temperature, and rapid drying (100 °C, 8 h) led to the maximum support mechanical reliability. The most reliable catalyst with respect to simultaneous appropriate catalytic performance and mechanical strength was prepared from a support with the lowest mean crushing strength (26.25 MPa). This work illustrates the importance of the Weibull modulus as a useful mechanical reliability index in manufacturing a supported solid catalyst.  相似文献

Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs) experienced mobility problems during traverses. Three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) simulations of MER wheel mobility tests for wheel slips of i = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 0.99 were done to examine high wheel slip mobility to improve the ARTEMIS MER traverse planning tool. Simulations of wheel drawbar pull and sinkage MIT data for i  0.5 were used to determine DEM particle packing density (0.62) and contact friction (0.8) to represent the simulant used in mobility tests. The DEM simulations are in good agreement with MIT data for i = 0.5 and 0.7, with reasonable but less agreement at lower wheel slip. Three mobility stages include low slip (i < 0.3) controlled by soil strength, intermediate slip (i  0.3–0.6) controlled by residual soil strength, and high slip (i > 0.6) controlled by residual soil strength and wheel sinkage depth. Equilibrium sinkage occurred for i < 0.9, but continuously increased for i = 0.99. Improved DEM simulation accuracy of low-slip mobility can be achieved using polyhedral particles, rather than tri-sphere particles, to represent soil. The DEM simulations of MER wheel mobility can improve ARTEMIS accuracy.  相似文献
