A new method for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) on the technical polymer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been developed which allows controlling and estimating the layer thickness of the grafted polymer in the isocylindrical pores of track-etched membranes. After PET surface treatment by oxidative hydrolysis, the bromoalkyl initiator was immobilized on the PET surface in a two-step solid-phase reaction; the isoporous membrane structure was preserved, and the pore diameter was increased from 760 to 790 nm. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was grafted under ATRP conditions from a methanol/water mixture at room temperature. Both monomer concentration and reaction time could be used as parameters to adjust the degree of grafting. Effective grafted layer thickness and its response to temperature were estimated from pure water permeability. All data, especially the high polymer densities (0.37 g/cm3) in the swollen layers at 25 degrees C, indicate that grafted PNIPAAm with a "brush" structure has been achieved. For dry PNIPAAm layer thicknesses on the PET pore walls of up to 80 nm, a temperature-induced swelling/deswelling ratio of approximately 3 had been observed. Reduction of the brush grafting density, via composition of the reaction mixture used in solid-phase synthesis for initiator immobilization, led to an increase of that swelling/deswelling ratio. Further, density and temperature response of the grafted PNIPAAm layers synthesized via ATRP were compared with those obtained in the same membranes by less controlled photografting, leading to lower grafting density and larger gradients in grafted layer density and, consequently, much higher swelling/deswelling ratios (>15).  相似文献

A novel approach was developed for the synthesis of tethered polymer layers with thickness and grafting density gradients. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was employed as a primary anchoring layer to attach the polymer chains to the surface of a silicon wafer. A linear temperature gradient heated stage was used for the generation of a gradual variation in the thickness of the anchoring PGMA film along the substrate. The obtained gradient was translated into the polymerization initiator gradient via the reaction between the epoxy groups of PGMA and the carboxyl functionality of 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BPA). The attachment of BPA to the surface modified with the monolayer of PGMA was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. To complete the experimental procedures, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization was performed to synthesize the grafted polymer layers with thickness and surface densities that were varied along the substrate. The grafting density of the samples created in this three-step process ranged from 0.75 +/- 0.05 to 1.5 +/- 0.25 chains/nm(2). It was estimated, from a comparison of the surface densities of the initiator and the attached polymer, that the efficiency of the initiation from the surface was on the order of 5-10% and was dependent upon the surface concentration of the initiator and the time of polymerization.  相似文献

We report actively controlled transport that is thermally switchable and size-selective in a nanocapillary array membrane (NCAM) prepared by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brushes onto the exterior surface of a Au-coated polycarbonate track-etched membrane. A smooth Au layer on the membrane surface, which is key to obtaining a uniform polymer film, was prepared by thermal evaporation of approximately 50 nm Au on both exterior surfaces. After evaporation, the inner diameter of the pore is reduced slightly, but the NCAM retains a narrow pore size distribution. PNIPPAm brushes with 10-30 nm (dry film) thickness were grafted onto the Au surface through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a disulfide initiator, (BrC(CH3)2COO(CH2)11S)2. Molecular transport through the PNIPAAm polymer brush-modified NCAMs was investigated by real-time fluorescence measurements using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled dextrans ranging from 4.4 to 282 kDa in membranes with variable initial pore diameters (80, 100, and 200 nm) and different PNIPAAm thicknesses. Manipulating the temperature of the NCAM through the PNIPAAm lower critical solution temperature (LCST) causes large, size-dependent changes in the transport rates. Over specific ranges of probe size, transport is completely blocked below the LCST but strongly allowed above the LCST. The combination of the highly uniform PNIPAAm brush and the monodisperse pore size distribution is critical in producing highly reproducible switching behavior. Furthermore, the reversible nature of the switching raises the possibility of using them as actively controlled filtration devices.  相似文献

Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-grafted silica beads with variable graft densities were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The ATRP initiator on the surface of silica was prepared through the aminopropyl silica and 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. Acetyl chloride was used to control the graft density. The content of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen were measured by elemental analyzer. The graft ratio was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and the molecular weight of the polymer was determined by GPC analysis. The retention behavior of five steroids under different temperature was studied. Furthermore, the influence of temperature and graft densities to the separation of steroid compounds was investigated. The results indicated that graft density had a significant influence on the separation efficiency. Thinner PNIPAAm chains on hydrophilic silica surface can achieve the stationary phase with enhanced temperature sensitivity and better separation property.

PNIPAM chain collapse depends on the molecular weight and grafting density   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study demonstrates that the thermally induced collapse of end-grafted poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32 degrees C depends on the chain grafting density and molecular weight. The polymer was grafted from the surface of a self-assembled monolayer containing the initiator (BrC(CH3)2COO(CH2)11S)2, using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Varying the reaction time and monomer concentration controlled the molecular weight, and diluting the initiator in the monolayer altered the grafting density. Surface force measurements of the polymer films showed that the chain collapse above the LCST decreases with decreasing grafting density and molecular weight. At T > LCST, the advancing water contact angle increases sharply on PNIPAM films of high molecular weight and grafting density, but the change is less pronounced with films of low-molecular-weight chains at lower densities. Below the LCST, the force-distance profiles exhibit nonideal polymer behavior and suggest that the brush architecture comprises dilute outer chains and much denser chains adjacent to the surface.  相似文献

This article reports the study of the effect of relative grafting densities of two polymer chains on solvent-induced self-assembly of mixed poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/polystyrene (PS) brushes through a combinatorial approach. Gradient-mixed PMMA/PS brushes were synthesized from a gradient-mixed initiator-terminated monolayer by combining atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) in a two-step process. The gradient-mixed initiator-terminated monolayer was fabricated by first formation of a gradient in density of an ATRP initiator through vapor diffusion followed by backfilling of an NMRP-initiator-terminated trichlorosilane. After treatment of a gradient-mixed brush whose PS Mn was slightly lower than that of PMMA with glacial acetic acid, a selective solvent for PMMA, relatively ordered nanodomains were observed in the region where the ratio of PS to PMMA grafting density (number of polymer chains/nm2) was in the range from 0.67 to 2.17 and the overall grafting density was approximately 0.85 polymer chains/nm2. Contact angle hysteresis were high (> or =40 degrees ) in this region and XPS studies confirmed that the PMMA chains were enriched at the outermost layer. The nanodomains are speculated to be of a micellar structure with PS chains forming the core shielded by PMMA chains.  相似文献

A simple yet versatile method was developed to prepare a low-density polymerization initiator gradient, which was combined with surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to produce a well-defined poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (HEMA) gradient substrate. A smooth variation in film thickness was measured across the gradient, ranging from 20 A to over 80 A, but we observed a nonmonotonic variation in water contact angle. Fits of X-ray reflectivity profiles suggested that at the low graft density end, the polymer chain structure was in a "mushroom" regime, while the polymer chains at high graft density were in a "brush" regime. It was found that the "mushroom" region of the gradient could be made adhesive to cells by adsorbing adhesion proteins, and cell adhesion could be tuned by controlling the density of the polymer grafts. Fibroblasts were seeded on gradients precoated with fibronectin to test cellular responses to this novel substrate, but it was found that cell adhesion did not follow the expected trend; instead, saturated cell adhesion and spreading was found at the low grafting density region.  相似文献

A poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) gradient covalently anchored on a silicon substrate with a linear variation of thickness was fabricated by continuous injection of the reaction mixture (NIPAAm, CuBr and its ligand, methanol, and water) into a glass chamber containing a silicon wafer, whose surface had been homogeneously immobilized with bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB). Because of the good control of the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) technique, the thickness of the PNIPAAm brushes was linearly proportional to the polymerization time. As a result, the gradient length and sharpness could be easily controlled by the experimental parameters such as the polymerization time and the injection rate. The as-prepared PNIPAAm gradients were characterized by ellipsometry, water contact angle, and atom force microscopy to detect their alteration of the thickness, surface wettability, and morphology, confirming the gradient structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the surface composition of the PNIPAAm. In vitro culture of HepG2 cells was implemented on the gradient surfaces, revealing that the cells could adhere at 37 degrees C and could be detached at 24 degrees C when the gradient thickness was in the range of 20-45 nm. The work thus develops a method to fabricate the stable gradient surface with better quality control, and clarifies in a facile manner the appropriate thickness of the PNIPAAm brushes in terms of cell adhesion and detachment.  相似文献

Macromolecular anchoring layer approach was used for preparation of an effective macroinitiator for the synthesis of grafted polymer layers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated from the surface. For the initial surface modification, a thin layer of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was deposited on the surface of a silicon wafer. The ATRP macroinitiator was synthesized on the substrate surface by the reaction between epoxy groups of PGMA and carboxy functionality of bromoacetic acid (BAA). Variation of the time and temperature of the BAA deposition as well as PGMA layer thickness allowed control over the amount of BAA attached to the surface. The PGMA anchoring layer allowed the achievement of initiator surface density significantly higher than that reported for a self-assembled monolayer of ATRP initiators. Polymer brushes were synthesized on the PGMA/BAA-modified substrates by ATRP. Different surface concentrations of BAA were used in our grafting experiments to acquire knowledge about the relationship between the amount of initiator anchored to the surface through PGMA and the rate of the grafted layer formation. The increase in the surface density of the initiating moieties led to the increase in the grafting rate. However, a cutoff initiator concentration beyond which no increase of the thickness of the grafted layer was observed. From comparison between the surface densities of the initiator and the attached polymer it was determined that the efficiency of the initiation from the surface was on the level of 5-15%.  相似文献

Orthogonal polymer brush gradients are assemblies of surface-anchored macromolecules, in which two material properties of the grafted chains (e.g., grafting density, molecular weight) vary independently in orthogonal directions. Here, we describe the formation and applications of two such orthogonal assemblies, involving: (1) molecular weight and grafting density (MW/σ) gradients of a given polymer and (2) molecular weight gradients (MW1/MW2), of two different polymers. Each point on orthogonal gradient substrate represents a unique combination of the two surface properties being varied, thus facilitating systematic investigation of a phenomenon that depends on the two said properties. We illustrate this point by employing orthogonal structures to study systematically: (1) formation of polymer brush-nanoparticle composite assemblies, (2) protein adsorption and cell adhesion, and (3) chain conformations in tethered diblock copolymers exposed to selective solvents. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe a method to exploit the mass-transfer limitations of microcontact printing for the fabrication of surfaces with well-defined, arbitrarily shaped composition variations. An analysis of the transport processes reveals that the printing of hexadecanethiol (HDT) from poly(dimethylsiloxane) is purely diffusion-controlled. Stamps with geometries that enhance surface-normal diffusion paths therefore allow not only the contours, but also the local density of self-assembled monolayers to be controlled. We use stamps with variable thickness and uniform ink concentration to print HDT density gradients on gold, depleting the stamps during the process. In the second step, a perfluorinated thiol fills the vacancies in the partial monolayer to form a two-component gradient that we analyze by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Linear and radial gradients are shown here as examples for a wide range of geometries that can be fabricated with high precision using the method.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a semiaromatic thermoplastic polyester used in many fields. For specific applications, controlled of the surface wettability (hydrophily/hydrophoby) could be a great challenge. Aminolysis of PET surfaces with branched polyethylenimine gives amino functional groups on the surface with high grafting density. Then, in a second step, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator was grafted by reaction with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. Surface initiated ATRP of 2‐lactobionamidoethyl methacrylate (LAMA) was performed in solution in the presence of a sacrificial initiator or an appropriate amount of Cu(II) species that act as deactivator. The efficiency of all reactions was confirmed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Wetting properties and surface energy were found to vary systematically depending to the type of functionalization and grafting. The quantity of grafted carbohydrate was determined by phenol/sulfuric acid colorimetric titration. The sugar graft density was observed to vary according to the ratio (monomer)/(free initiator). High graft density could be obtained yielding to superhydrophilic polymer brushes. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 2689–2697  相似文献

Patterned poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brushes were fabricated on oxidized silicon wafers by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide from a micropatterned initiator. The patterned surface initiator was prepared by microcontact-printing octadecyltrichlorosilane and backfilling with 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane followed by amidization with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid. XPS and FTIR confirmed the chemical structure of the surface initiator and the PNIPAAm brushes. Surface analysis techniques, including ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, and X-ray reflectometry (XRR), were used to characterize the thickness, roughness, hydrophilicity, and density of the polymer brushes. Tapping-mode AFM imaging confirmed the successful patterning of the PNIPAAm brushes on the oxidized silicon substrates. Variable temperature ellipsometry indicated that the lower critical solution temperature of the hydrated PNIPAAm brush was broad, occurring over the range of 20-35 degrees C. A solvatochromic fluorophore, 6-propionyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene (Prodan), in the PNIPAAm brush layers yielded a very similar emission to that in DMF, which can be attributed to the similarity of their chemical structures. Fluorescence microscopy further proved the successful patterning of the polymer brushes and suggested that the Prodan is localized in the patterned PNIPAAm brushes and excluded from the surrounding octadecyltrichlorosilane regions.  相似文献

Combining inkjet printing and atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) provides a straightforward and versatile method for producing patterned polymer surfaces that may serve as platforms for a variety of applications. We report the use of drop-on-demand technology to print binary chemical gradients and simple patterns onto solid substrates and, by using surface-confined ATRP, amplify these patterns and gradients. Chemically graded monolayers prepared by inkjet printing dodecanethiol and backfilling with 11-mercaptoundecanol showed continuous changes in the water contact angle along the gradient. These samples also exhibited a distinct change in the intensity of methyl group and C-O stretching modes along the gradient. Graded or patterned polymer layers were produced by growing, with ATRP, tethered poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layers from gradient or patterned printed monolayers that contained a bromo-capped initiator. Atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy confirmed that the PMMA layers amplified the underlying printed initiator layer with remarkable fidelity.  相似文献

Surface density gradients of streptavidin (SAV) were created on solid surfaces and demonstrated functionality as a bioconjugation platform. The surface density of immobilized streptavidin steadily increased in one dimension from 0 to 235 ng cm(-2) over a distance of 10 mm. The density of coupled protein was controlled by its immobilization onto a polymer surface bearing a gradient of aldehyde group density, onto which SAV was covalently linked using spontaneous imine bond formation between surface aldehyde functional groups and primary amine groups on the protein. As a control, human serum albumin was immobilized in the same manner. The gradient density of aldehyde groups was created using a method of simultaneous plasma copolymerization of ethanol and propionaldehyde. Control over the surface density of aldehyde groups was achieved by manipulating the flow rates of these vapors while moving a mask across substrates during plasma discharge. Immobilized SAV was able to bind biotinylated probes, indicating that the protein retained its functionality after being immobilized. This plasma polymerization technique conveniently allows virtually any substrate to be equipped with tunable protein gradients and provides a widely applicable method for bioconjugation to study effects arising from controllable surface densities of proteins.  相似文献

A method is presented to prevent microbial adhesion to solid surfaces exploiting the unique properties of polymer brushes. Polyacrylamide (PAAm) brushes were grown from silicon wafers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a three-step reaction procedure consisting of immobilization of a coupling agent gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, anchoring of an ATRP initiator 4-(chloromethyl)benzoyl chloride, and controlled radical polymerization of acrylamide. The surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and contact-angle measurements. The calculated grafting density pointed to the presence of a dense and homogeneous polymer brush. Initial deposition rates, adhesion after 4 h, and detachment of two bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 12600 and Streptococcus salivarius GB 24/9) and one yeast strain (Candida albicans GB 1/2) to both PAAm-coated and untreated silicon surfaces were investigated in a parallel plate flow chamber. A high reduction (70-92%) in microbial adhesion to the surface-grafted PAAm brush was observed, as compared with untreated silicon surfaces. Application of the proposed grafting method to silicone rubbers may offer great potential to prevent biomaterials-centered infection of implants.  相似文献

Herein we describe a new strategy for producing micelles with mixed coronal chains. This method involves attachment of an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator at the interface of a micelle and preparation of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brushes at the interface by a "grafting from" method. Poly(ethylene glycol)- block-polystyrene (PEG- b-PS) diblock copolymer was achieved by ATRP. After the sulfonation reaction PS blocks were partly sulfonated. In aqueous solution at low pH the sulfonated block copolymer self-assembled into micelles with PS cores and PEG coronae and sodium 4-styrenesulfonate groups were distributed at the interfaces of the micelles. An ATRP initiator consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt moiety and a 2-bromo-2-methyl propionate moiety was ion exchanged onto the interface of the micelle. ATRP of DMAEMA was initiated at the interface, and micelles with PEG/PDMAEMA mixed coronal chains were prepared by ATRP. The structures of the micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and zeta potential measurements. The size and morphology of the micelles were controlled by pH in aqueous solution. At high pH, PDMAEMA brushes collapse, forming nanodomains on the surface of the micelles. PDMAEMA brushes in the coronae of the micelles could be used as a template for preparation of gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

Cellulose acetate is a very good film-forming polymer with major applications in cigarette filters, photographic films, cosmetics and pharmaceutics formulations and membrane separation processes. Nevertheless, its rigidity and relative hydrophobic character can be limiting drawbacks for some applications. In this work, new cellulose acetate materials with highly flexible and hydrophilic grafts were obtained with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic balances. Cellulose acetate was grafted with methyl diethylene glycol methacrylate (MDEGMA) from brominated macroinitiators by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in two steps. The first step consisted of introducing ATRP initiator groups on cellulose acetate by reacting hydroxyl side groups with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. A preliminary study was then carried out to determine the experimental conditions for the controlled ATRP of MDEGMA homopolymerization in a solvent (cyclopentanone) compatible with cellulose acetate grafting. In these conditions, the MDEGMA homopolymerization followed Hanns Fischer’s kinetics model accounting for the radical persistent effect. The ATRP grafting was then investigated for two cellulose acetate macroinitiators differing in the number of their ATRP initiator groups. Two families of graft copolymers with nano-structured architectures were obtained. The first family corresponded to copolymers with a high number of short grafts. The copolymers of the second family had almost the same graft weight fractions but a small number of long grafts. The morphology of the graft copolymers was then investigated by synchrotron X-ray scattering. The most informative results showed that the phase segregation depended upon the number and length of the poly(MDEGMA) grafts. The copolymer with 44 wt.% of long grafts showed a segregated morphology of nano-domains with sharp interfaces and a radius of gyration of 11.5 nm (from Guinier’s law). These cellulose acetate copolymers eventually led to strong films with potential applications in membrane separations.  相似文献
