In this paper, the fabrication and characterization of polyethylene terephatate (PET) thin film integrated optical waveguide is presented. Dip-coating technique has been used to fabricate the optical waveguide using PET. Various waveguide properties, such as mode effective refractive index, optical loss, dispersion and waveguide thickness as a function of temperature of waveguides have been reported. Optical waveguide arrays consisting of a two-dimensional arrangement of weakly coupled waveguides represent the basis of the
new research field of discrete optics. For studying the nonlinear pulse dynamics, fiber waveguide arrays offer specific advantages
such as a high optical damage threshold and an accessible range of anomalous dispersion. Coherent coupling of such waveguides
for reasonable propagation lengths requires, however, a high structural quality of the waveguides and their superstructure,
which is beyond conventional fiber technology. Design, fabrication and characterization of such a fiber waveguide array are
described. The linear propagation properties in such a system are modeled and compared with experimental measurements. The
high structural homogeneity and good optical quality of the arrays as well as the limits of the nearest-neighbor approximation

Optically controlled two-way optical switches are useful for high-speed photonic switches and rapidly reconfigurable optical interconnection networks. A directional coupler forms such a switch because the field can be switched from one waveguide to the other by altering the optical length of the waveguide. Nonlinear materials are incorporated in the waveguide so that the optical path length may be altered by using an optical control beam to vary the intensity of light. A finite element method is described that enables the modelling of the non-linear dual waveguide structure for arbitrary waveguide shapes. Spurious modes are avoided in the transverse magnetic field method and non-linearity is handled by iteration and assuming an equivalent non-linear relative permittivity. 相似文献

Dip-coating technique has been used to fabricate the optical waveguide using PET. Various waveguide properties, such as mode effective refractive index, optical loss, dispersion and waveguide thickness as a function of temperature of waveguides and substrates have been reported. Optical losses of as low as 0.7 dB cm–1 waveguides can be obtained if the formation temperature can be controlled between 30 and 35°C. 讨论了高品质中空金属光波导的工作原理及其制作工艺,制备了以金和银作为波导材料的中空波导管,并对空芯以及充入不同透明液体的液芯波导的透光特性进行了测试,结果表明:与中空介质波导相比,中空金属波导具有光传输损耗低,透过率对波导弯曲与失调不甚敏感等优点;而液芯金属波导的透光效率与透明材料的折射系数无关。文中描述了在特定波段内“中空光纤”的原理,并报道了He-Ne和CO2激光在中空金壁波导传输的实验结果。 相似文献

An optical code generating device for security access system application is presented. The code generating device constructed using asymmetric hollow optical waveguide coupler design provides a unique series of output light intensities which are successively used as an optical code. The design of the waveguide is made using two major components which are asymmetric Yjunction splitter and a linear taper. Waveguiding is done using a hollow waveguide structure. Construction of higher level 1×N hollow waveguide coupler is done utilizing a basic 1×2 asymmetric waveguide coupler design together with a cascaded design scheme. Nonsequential ray tracing of the asymmetric hollow optical waveguide couplers is performed to predict the optical transmission properties of the waveguide. A representation of the code combination that can be generated from the device is obtained using combinatory number theory. 相似文献

A compact and sensitive electro-optical sensor based on slotted photonic crystal waveguide (S-PhCW) is demonstrated. The electro-optical sensor can be realized in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs of silicon in Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI). Nonlinear optical polymer is used as infiltration. By applying three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD), the sensitivity and quality factor of electro-optical sensor with different slotted waveguide width are calculated. In addition, sensitivity and the optical properties such as transmission spectrum and field distributions are compared between electro-optical sensor based on line defect photonic crystal waveguide (W1-PhCW) and that based on slotted photonic crystal waveguide (S-PhCW). Simulation results demonstrate that, compared with electro-optical sensor based on line defect photonic crystal waveguide, the sensitivity and quality factor is improved by 30 times and 6.6 times respectively in sensor based on slotted photonic crystal waveguide. Besides, the proposed PhC sensor devices have the advantage of a compact structure with the potential for monolithic integration with optical-to-electrical on-chip conversion and detection. 相似文献

石墨烯材料应用到各种光波导器件中正成为新一代光子器件的重要发展方向之一,目前基于石墨烯的光纤和集成光子器件研究越来越受到国内外的重视. 本文建立了一种由微纳光纤耦合光倏逝场,并在石墨烯薄膜中传输的模型. 通过有限元分析法,研究了光在这种石墨烯波导中传输光场的强度分布和相位特性,并通过实验进行了验证. 结果表明,沿着微纳光纤-石墨烯光波导传播的倏逝场的强度分布和相位均受石墨烯材料作用,石墨烯材料能有效聚集和导行波导中传输的高阶模,在单位传输长度上具有更密集的等相位面. 本文提出了一种利用微纳光纤耦合光倏逝场研究石墨烯相位响应特性的新方法,对基于石墨烯波导的新型调制器、滤波器、激光器和传感器等光子器件的设计和应用具有一定的参考意义.

将增益介质加入金属环构成的表面等离子体激元耦合共振波导,利用传输矩阵及时域有限差分方法研究了不同增益系数下该耦合共振波导的透射谱线、色散关系以及群折射率.结果表明,增益介质共振频率附近的反常色散及正常色散变化能有效影响由共振波导几何结构决定的色散关系曲线,且具有相反的效果,分别使其变得平坦和陡峭,从而放大和缩小由共振波导几何结构决定的群折射率.另外,增益系数随外加抽运光改变的特点使得加入增益介质的耦合共振波导具有传输性能可灵活调节特性.文章的研究对促进耦合共振波导在高密度光学集成中的广泛应用具有积极意义.

A modified m-line technique, based on the use of a high index hemisphere instead of a coupling prism is presented. It allows fast characterization of the optical properties as a function of the propagation direction inside a planar waveguide. Results of an ion-implanted KTP waveguide are presented and compared to prism measurements. It is shown that this technique enhances the precision of the waveguide parameters determination and allows to study advanced features such as strong mode hybridization. 相似文献

Recently a new type of lithium niobate waveguide was suggested for potential nonlinear optic applications. The waveguide consists of a uniform large core and a leaky coupled slab for realizing a lateral optical confinement to support the fundamental spatial mode propagation. Inside the waveguide, the slab layer is required to have a refractive index slightly lower than that of the core, but higher than that of the substrate. Lithium niobate doped with magnesium oxides shows an increased refractive index that is dependent on the dopant's concentration. Therefore, in order to fabricate such waveguides, the pulsed laser deposition approach was used to study the growth of such composition-modified lithium niobate as the slab layer. The as-grown films were characterized on its expitaxy, structure, and optical performance, via X-ray diffraction analysis, optical guiding experiment, etc. 相似文献

A novel dielectric slot waveguide supporting strongly confined field in a T-shaped low-index slot region for both TE and TM polarizations is proposed and analyzed. Numerical simulations have demonstrated that quite different birefringent modal properties are achievable with tight optical confinement in the slot by tuning key geometrical parameters of the waveguide. Based on such a slot structure, the characteristics of directional couplers are investigated and the conditions for polarization independent coupling are also given. The presented T-shaped slot waveguide might be employed in integrated photonic systems as important building blocks enabling a number of potential applications. 相似文献

Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) and spectroscopy were used to study the light emission characteristics of CdS
nano-ribbon optical waveguide. A continuous red-shift of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of such nano-ribbons with the increase
of the light propagation distance was observed. Near-field optical images indicate that CdS nano-ribbon can work well as an
optical waveguide. Quantitative calculation was made to demonstrate the PL attenuation with long propagation distance (typically
several hundreds μm). The red shift is attributed to self-absorption, which means re-absorption and re-emission among energy-valleys
with different energies of conduction bands. Our results draw attention to the spectral characteristics of nano-ribbon optical
waveguides, which are as important as intensity to the stability and veracity of information transmission. 相似文献

A simulator for self-organized lightwave network (SOLNET) is developed. The simulator is based on the finite difference time domain method. SOLNET enables us to construct self-aligned coupling waveguides between misaligned micro/nanometer-scale optical devices by self-focusing, which arises from an increase in refractive index induced by write beams in photo-refractive materials. The SOLNET simulator reveals that an L-shaped nanometer-scale optical waveguide of SOLNET is grown from a 0.5-μm-wide optical waveguide when write beams are introduced from the optical waveguide into photo-refractive materials, where a wavelength filter is embedded. The SOLNET simulator also reproduces coupling path construction between a 2-μm-wide optical waveguide and a 0.5-μm-wide optical waveguide having a wavelength filter on the core edge. The optical waveguides are placed with misalignment of 0.5-μm offset. By introducing write beams from the 2-μm-wide optical waveguide, the incident write beams and reflected write beams from the wavelength filter merge into one optical waveguide in the photo-refractive materials, constructing a self-aligned coupling waveguide. 相似文献

An acrylic-based Y-branch plastic optical fiber (POF) with a middle suspended waveguide taper has been developed. The suspended
high index contrast waveguide taper structure has been designed in such a way that it is surrounded by air-cladding. Non-sequential
ray tracing has been performed on the device giving an insertion loss of 4.68 dB and coupling ratio of 50: 50. The middle
waveguide taper is constructed on the acrylic block itself without using any additional optical waveguiding medium injected
into the engraved taper region. Fabrication of the devices is done by producing the device structures on an acrylic block
using high speed computer numerical control (CNC) machining tool. Input and output POF fibers are inserted into this device
structure in such a way that they are passively aligned to the middle waveguide taper structure. The device shows an insertion
loss of 5.9 dB, excess loss of 2.9 dB and a splitting ratio of 50: 50. 相似文献
